In the late 19th century The Shaker Parklands was designated as a natural
green space, set aside by the city of Cleveland for the benefit of its fast-growing
population. Citizens enjoyed the park as an escape to the “country” as the
industrial city pushed eastward.
In the 1960s the Shaker Parklands was threatened by a proposed freeway. Local
citizens organized and fought hard to shut it down. Included in their strategy
was the founding of the Shaker Lakes Regional Nature Center. Its goals were
simple: to teach environmental education and to preserve the area’s important
natural habitats — lake, stream, marsh, field, ravine and forest.
Today, we celebrate the 50th Anniversary of the Nature Center at Shaker Lakes
and continue to serve over 15,000 area schoolchildren and an estimated 30,000
hikers, birders and visitors annually.

Camp Staff
Excited to share their knowledge and love for nature, the full-time environmental educators are
trained and dedicated professionals with a long-term commitment to environmental education.
Our seasonal camp staff includes school teachers and highly trained naturalists who return year
after year. All staff are CPR and First Aid Certified to ensure your child’s safety. Experience and
observation are the primary tools by which we teach, empower and encourage students of all
ages to explore and learn about the natural world that surrounds them.

All camps are held rain or shine, but may be modified due to inclement weather. Please be
sure to send campers with rain gear and a change of clothes should we get stuck in a sudden
downpour or just want to have fun splashing around in the puddles! Nature Nursery and up
includes a nut-free snack each day.

Join the Outdoor Adventure Camp Volunteer Team!
The Volunteer Program at the Nature Center at Shaker Lakes is accepting applications
from teens interested in providing a positive experience for the Outdoor Adventure Camp
(OAC) campers. OAC Youth Assistants work with Nature Center Educators to provide
a safe, fun, and engaging environment while assisting with hikes, crafts, games and other
activities throughout the week. A successful candidate will be enthusiastic, motivated,
reliable, possess strong problem-solving skills and the ability to put the camper first.

Please have your Member ID number ready when registering. You will find your ID number
on the mailing panel of this brochure. In order to receive your membership discount of $30
per session, you must enter your Member ID number at checkout in the “coupon code” box.
Not a Nature Center member, but would like to become one? You can purchase a membership
online. Once you have purchased your membership, you will receive a confirmation email with a
temporary coupon code. That coupon code can be used at checkout to receive the membership
discount of $30 per session when registering. You will receive your permanent Member ID

Spring Break Camp
March 28 through April 1
9 am to 3 pm, with extended care available from 3 to 5 pm
Children in Grades K through 4 will enjoy a week filled with adventure and discovery with
themes like Spring Scientists and Water, Water Everywhere. Through hikes, games, crafts, interactive
learning and a whole lot of fun, your child will gain an appreciation for nature and the outdoor
world. Children can sign up for one, two, three, four or all five days. Nut-free snacks are
provided, but campers should bring lunch in a reusable container each day. Members: $55/day or
$245/week; Non-Members: $60/day or $270/week; Extended care: $8/hour.

we search for all the bugs, slugs, and other ughs
that creep, crawl and slime their way through
the forest floor. We will learn what they eat and

box turtle “Speedy” prefer to eat worms,
slugs, or pill bugs? All week long we will ask

the Earth and make it a better place. We will
practice being good stewards and learn about
the three Rs (reduce, reuse, recycle)! How

If we stop and listen, there is a cacophony of
sounds in nature. This week we will use nature
to create magnificent music. Full Day campers

We will discover the amazing adaptations
that animals and plants possess and how

pioneer, before there were shopping malls and

make ice cream and candles, and learn how to

they think like scientists, develop hypotheses
and conduct experiments. We’ll also have

Naturepiece Theatre
Rocks are cool! They come in all different
shapes, sizes, colors, and textures. But what are
rocks made of and how are they created? We
will answer these questions and also experience
rock climbing at Ruffing Montessori’s rock

The Earth is a pretty amazing place, especially
when looking for artistic or creative inspiration.
This week we will have fun using things found
from the Earth to create games and unique works

Embark on a theatrical adventure as we create
costumes and props and perform nature-themed
skits for the rest of the camp and parents at

Discover how Native Americans survived
in Northeast Ohio. We’ll learn about their
traditions, explore their connection to the
Earth and practice using a bow and arrow
during an archery lesson. Campers will also
visit Indian Point Park and Akron Gorge
Metropark where a group of Native Americans

Off the Beaten Path

This week we will learn trailblazing techniques,
discover geocaching and participate in a
foraging workshop. Our field trips will lead
us to Brecksville Reservation to hunt for

It’s a bird! It’s a bat! It’s a butterfly! This
week’s focus will be creatures of flight, as we
use binoculars and field guides to identify
what we discover overhead. At Penitentiary
Glen Reservation’s Wildlife Center, we will
get an up-close look at some birds of prey that
have been rehabilitated there. $290 members,

Field trips: Thursday & Friday
How old are the rocks in Northeast Ohio
and how did they form? This week we will
discover many different rock formations as
we explore the geology around the Nature
Center, as well as Nelson-Kennedy Ledges
State Park and Euclid Creek Reservation. On
Friday, campers will also experience indoor
rock climbing at the Cleveland Rock Gym.

This week will be filled with STEM-related

design challenges, including catapults, marble
runs, “s’more worthy” solar ovens, and
Rube Goldberg machines. Using nature and
recyclable materials as sources of inspiration,
what feats of engineering awesomeness will you

Survival Skills

Do you know how long you can survive
without water, food, or shelter? Gain important
wilderness know-how through shelter building,
fire building, orienteering, and an archery lesson
at the Nature Center. $290 members, $320

Transforming Tomorrow

Field trip: Tuesday & Wednesday
This week we will explore some ways we
can help protect our planet. Campers will
work together to brainstorm and create an
earth-friendly product. At the end of the
week, they will present their product to the
rest of the camp and parents, demonstrating
how everyone can think of ways to make our
planet a better place. Show will be at 2 pm on
Thursday, August 18, followed by a popsicle
reception. $225 members, $255 non-members.
Eco-Rangers
Grade: Entering Grades 6 through 9 • 9 am to 3 pm
Eco-Rangers is a perfect fit for older campers who are looking for more in-depth adventure and
activity. Campers travel by van to off-site locations as indicated below. During ER2 and ER5,
there are no overnights; however campers will participate in daily adventure-packed activities on
and off-site. During ER3 and ER6, campers will participate in offsite camping trips. Campers will
learn, or review the basics of tent camping, including setting up a tent, cooking on a dual burner
camp stove, and building a campfire, all within the guidelines set by the National Park Service.
Bring a backpack, change of clothes, water bottle and lunch in a reusable container each day. A
packing list will be provided for the camping trips with your confirmation email.

This week our focus will be on aerial
adventures! Throughout Monday and
Tuesday campers will try their hand at
archery, work on teambuilding activities and
explore the Doan Brook Gorge. Wednesday,
Thursday, and Friday we will embark on a
new adventure each day in Northeast Ohio.
Campers will go rock scrambling at NelsonKennedy Ledges State Park, indoor rock
climbing at the Cleveland Rock Gym, and
ziplining with Common Ground Canopy
Tour. $360 members, $390 non-members
(includes all activity fees). Please note:
Drop off on Friday, July 1 will be at 8:30
am and pick up will be at 3:30 pm.
This week’s adventures will have us climbing
and soaring above the ground! Tuesday we
will work on team building activities and
prepare for our camping trip. Wednesday we
will go rock climbing at Hinckley Reservation
with the Cleveland Rock Gym. Thursday
we begin our two day camping adventure at
Mohican State Park where we will explore the
park and set up camp for one night. Friday
morning, we will break camp, pack up the van
and get ready to go soaring through the trees
with Tree Frog Canopy Tours. We will return
to the Nature Center at 3 pm on Friday.
Thursday dinner through lunch on Friday are
provided. $420 members, $450 non-members
(includes rock climbing and ziplining fees).

This week the focus is on aquatic adventures!
Monday and Tuesday campers will explore
the waterways in and around the Nature
Center, conduct water quality testing, and
also try their hand at archery. Wednesday,
Thursday, and Friday we will travel throughout
Northeast Ohio where a new adventure awaits
us each day. Campers will kayak along Lake
Erie at Fairport Harbor Lakefront Park, creek
walk from Blue Hen Falls to Buttermilk Falls
within the Cuyahoga Valley National Park,
and go paddleboarding along the Black River
in Lorain. $350 members, $380 non-members
(includes all activity fees).
This week will be an adventure to remember as
we explore the Laurel Highlands in Ohiopyle,
Pennsylvania. Monday and Tuesday we
will stay local and work on team-building
activities, prepare for our trip, and practice
traversing rocky and slippery terrain at Holden
Arboretum’s Stebbins Gulch. Wednesday we
pack up the van and head to Ohiopyle to set
up camp for two nights. The adventure begins
as soon as we arrive Wednesday afternoon,
when we go underground and experience
spelunking (caving) at Laurel Caverns Park.
Campers must have hiking boots with ankle
support and one light source to participate
in this activity. Thursday we will take to
the Lower Youghiogheny River for a 7-mile
guided, whitewater rafting adventure with
Class III and IV rapids. In between caving
and whitewater rafting, campers will discover
the incredible waterfalls, rock formations,
and natural waterslides within the area. We
will return to the Nature Center at 3 pm on
Friday. Wednesday dinner through lunch on
Friday are provided. $520 members, $550
non-members (includes caving and whitewater
rafting fees).

backpacks must be provided by the camper.

are available to rent for a nominal fee on a
first-come, first-served basis.

Financial Aid
Financial aid packages are available. Need-based financial aid covers 25-75% of the cost of

Policies And Frequently Asked Questions
• Full payment is due at time of registration. Member registration begins Monday, January
11, 2016. Non-member registration begins Monday, January 25, 2016.
• Space is limited, please register early. Each camp typically has a maximum of 12 campers
per session. Eco-Rangers (ER3 and ER6) have a maximum of 10 campers per session.
• All registrations require a valid email address for important and timely camp
correspondence. Registered campers will receive a confirmation email with forms that
are required to be completed for participation. Emergency Medical Forms must be
completed and received by June 13.
• Early-Bird Discount — Register by March 7, 2016 to receive $5 off per week of camp.
• Sibling Discount — $5 off for each additional child registered at the same time.
• Cancellation Policy —Cancellations made before June 1, 2016 will be refunded (minus
a $50 processing fee per week). Camp fees may be forfeited if cancellation is not made
by June 1, 2016. The Nature Center reserves the right to cancel a class if enrollment is
low; in which case, you will receive a full refund. Any camp cancellations are determined
two weeks before the start date of each individual camp week.
• Switching sessions will incur a $25 change fee.
• To ensure a safe camp environment, the classroom entrance remains locked. Doors open
five minutes before camp begins and ends.
• The Nature Center reserves the right to refuse or discontinue an individual’s
participation if his or her welfare or the welfare of others is in jeopardy.
• Each camp has one environmental educator and at least one teen volunteer. To receive

• All campers receive one T-shirt and a camp photo. Please select desired shirt size when
registering.
• Field trip days and locations are subject to change.
• All campers must bring a reusable water bottle, lunch in a reusable container and
backpack as access to trash cans and drinking fountains are limited during hikes.

joining. Signing up for a household membership nearly pays for itself when you register
for two camp sessions and saves you $25 when you register for three camp sessions! To
