Welcome to Lake Anna
Lake Anna is unlike any other destination in the mid-Atlantic eastern seaboard region. As you sit by the water in the afternoon sun, it doesn’t seem you could be only an hour or two away from major metropolitan
areas, from the Blue Ridge Mountains, from world-class universities and from both the capital of our nation
and the place of its birth -but you are.
Lake Anna was originally created by Dominion to provide cooling water for the North Anna Power Station.
In 1968, clearing of the land started for the lake and in 1972 Lake Anna as we now know it was formed.
Boater Safety Licenses
Lake Anna is 17.5 miles long and 1.5 miles wide and has
over 200 miles of shoreline. The lake is divided into two
different sections, the Private side and Public side.
The lake has over 9,600 acres of water on the
Public side and 3,400 on the Private side.
This summer, make sure you know the laws about boater safety
licenses and who needs one. Ware are in the next phase-in of
the Education Compliance Requirement for all Virginia boaters.
Beginning July 1, 2014, all motorboat operators ages 45 and
younger need to pass a boating safety course. All PWC (Jet Ski)
operators, regardless of age, must already carry proof that they
have passed an approved safe boating class.
NOTE: PWC Age Restriction: No person under the age of 14 may
operate a PWC. Those operators 14 and 15 MUST show proof of
completing an approved and accepted boating safety course
either in a classroom or online. The challenge exam or other
provisions of the Education Compliance Requirement do not
meet the requirements of the age restriction law.
Flotilla 87, Lake Anna's
local Coast Guard Auxiliary
offers boater safety courses
that anyone can take. Preregistration is required and
can be done via online at
the DGIF website or by calling Flotilla 87 Commander
Jean McCormick at
571-236-5247. Instructors
are dually certified in both
the US Coast Guard and the
State of Virginia.
The Private side is where the Waste Heat
Treatment Facility for the power plant is located
and is commonly known as the “warm” side.
There is no public access to the Private side
leading to the Private name. The Public side is
larger and has several marinas and boat launches open to the public.
In 1972, the Commonwealth stocked the lake
with over 5.5 million fish and continues to stock
the lake periodically. There are over 33 different
species of fish that thrive in Lake Anna including Large Mouth Bass, Striped Bass and Catfish.

In an Emergency while out on the Lake?
Look for the yellow dock signs located on many Lake Anna Docks
The Lake Anna Civic Association's Emergency Services Committee has been working hard to keep Lake Anna, its property owners
and visitors safe for the past 3 years. It has long been a problem for boaters who are out on the lake who need assistance, to give
an exact location to emergency services and 911 operators. This is why the Lake Anna Civic Association has come up with the dock
signs program. These "Location Markers" allows dock owners to place a sign on their dock for $18 which gives 911 operators and
emergency response teams your exact location. This will save precious time that could be the difference between life and death.
The signs work off of GPS and street address for the dock owners.
How the signs work: The first letter in the sign stants for the county, S=Spotsylvania, L=Louisa and O=Orange. The second letter is
the location based on the 208 bridge, U=Up Lake and D=Down Lake. The last three numbers tells the 911 operators the specific
street address and GPS location of the dock.
If you have an emergency:
1. CALL 911.
2. Give the dock sign information to the 911 operator. Emergency resources will be sent without delay.
To get more information about obtaining a sign for your dock,
visit LACA's website www.lakeannavirginia.org for an application. Signs cost $18 and Rainbow Graphics in Mineral will mail
one to you once your application is approved.

BEFORE YOU ARRIVE
There are a lot of things that you as a vacationer need to prepare for. When renting a Vacation Rental home
or condo, there are the normal vacation things that you need to plan for as well as some others that you
might not have thought about. Perparation is the key to a happy and easy going vacation. Here are some
good things to think about before you head to your Vacation Rental that you might not have thought
about before.
Equipment and Appliances
Furnishings and equipment in all properties are provided by the owner. Every reasonable effort is made to
keep each property and its equipment in good working order. Please notify your Vacation Rental Company
promptly of any difficulty you encounter during your stay. They will make every reasonable effort to complete repairs or find a solution to a problem.
Parking
Be mindful of parking spaces available at your rental. Some condos have a limited number of parking
spaces alloted to them. No parking in undesignated areas, including lawns.
Phone & Internet
Rentals equipped with telephones may not allow for long distance calls. Tenants can receive calls, dial locally or use a calling card. It is the responsibility of the tenant to find out if internet service is available in
their rental. Internet may be highspeed or dial up, and could be wi-fi accessible or require Ethernet connection. Not all rentals have internet service.
Occupancy
Number and sizes of beds are listed only to accommodate flexibility in sleeping arrangements and not to
represent allowable occupancy. It is your responsibility to accurately represent the number of adults and
children before you enter into a lease agreement.
Vacation Rental Checklist
Before you venture off to your next vacation rental here at Lake Anna, or anywhere else, you need to make
sure you bring everything you need. Below is a checklist of various items that you should think about
bringing with you on your next vacation to Lake Anna.

The nights will be slightly longer than the days and the weather is cooling drastically, making the backs of
creeks and river systems up to 10 degrees cooler than the main lake. The fish are getting very active schooling on baitfish in open water, choke points and shallow flats. The fishing will continue to get better as
fall progresses.
Bass:
The lower end of the lake has large schools of 11” to 15” bass near all three dikes. During over cast days
they will stay on the surface throughout the entire day. These fish will readily take XPS poppers, smaller
swimbaits and flukes. There are some larger fish near these schools… you can usually find them underneath the smaller fish or in nearby cover/structure such as brush, points or dock pilings. Flip jigs, finesse
worms, and senko style baits at these ambush points to entice strikes from the lunkers.
The mid lake area (from Sturgeon to the “Spilts”) is producing some nicer keepers as well. The backs of the
feeder creeks and coves are active early in the morning with threadfin shad and 2-4 lb bass. Flukes, poppers, and spooks are producing some nice catches in the first couple hours of daylight. Once the sun has
come out and the threadfin are not visible in the backs of the creeks, it is time to fish the first major ledge,
point or wood cover in that area. The nicer sized bass will take shakey heads, jigs, texas rigs and slow
rolling spinnerbaits throughout the day as long as you pick apart the cover that they are holding tight to.
Last but not least – the upper end of the lake (basically the North Anna and Pamunkey branches) has some
of the cooler water in the lake and is producing some nice catches in the backs of the creeks, grass beds,
and rocky points. Jigs, Worms, spinnerbaits, and crankbaits are working in the right circumstance. For
example try throwing a half ounce chartreuse spinnerbait with a Colorado blade in the grass in the North
Anna, or cast small pearl colored crankbaits at the rocky points and ledges in the s-turns, and if the sun is
bearing down flip jigs into heavy cover near an old channel bend in the upper flats.
There are several different techniques and patterns that are working on Lake Anna right now. The best bet is
to start with the type of water and technique that you feel most comfortable with and make adjustments.
Make sure not to waste too much time in areas that are not producing fish. And most importantly, pay attention to the current conditions… Is the water rising (pushes fish to the banks) or falling pulls fish out to points
and ledges? If it is cloudy look for a more aggressive bite… If it is really bright, look for shade… etc. etc.
There are dozens of variables that affect the behavior of largemouth, you have to try to figure out “the
formula” every day on the water. That’s what makes it so challenging and entertaining!!
Striper
You have to love it when fall sets in on Lake Anna. The Striped Bass get really wound up when the
temperature starts to drop. There are stripers from one end of the lake to the other. And many of them
can be found in some of the same spots as the largemouth schoolies.
The lower end of the lake has thousands of 14”-22” stripers from the dam to the power plant. At times,
the school near the power plant is 5-10 acres wide! The smaller fish are near the top while the keepers
are usually in about 18-22 ft of water. You can use a variety of baits to catch 20-50 small stripers. I prefer
to cast 3-4 inch pearl swimbaits or casting spoons. You can use jerkbaits, poppers, spooks, bucktails,
grubs, whatever. But the most success for me in huge schools of smaller fish are spoons and swimbaits.
As you get to the splits area of the lake you will notice that some of the schools will get smaller but the
fish are getting bigger. These fish will “push up” on main and secondary points and under water humps
and islands. Always keep a spook or a popper tied on in case you see these fish come up on the surface.
But most of the time you’ll need to find these fish with your sonar. Once you have located them you can
jig spoons or present a variety of trolling techniques depending on the depth and activity of the fish (that
could be a whole article of its own).
The upper ends of the lake have some nice fish feeding on the shallow
points and even in the backs of some of the creeks. One of my all time
favorite baits, the XPS pro series 6 inch jerkbait, becomes deadly
in mid October. I focus on points in the Pamunkey and North
Anna using a jerk – jerk – pause cadence, covering the water
very quickly. Large stripers and bass will slam a large jerkbait
more and more regularly as the water continues to cool.
Crappie
The slab fishing will start to heat up as the weather cools.
There are still lots of fish in deep brush and bridge
pilings. They will begin to get shallower and the bigger
fish will be easier to catch as the month goes on.
Small and medium minnows always work great for
schools of crappie. But try slow trolling 2” tubes in
the upper ends of the rivers for bigger fish… You
can pick them up on old river channels, rock piles
and stumpy areas.

Lake Anna Condos at Anna Point Marina
Shaffer’s Cove Condos are located at Anna Point Marina right off of Rt 208 at the North side of the New
Bridge. All of these condos are water access and include the use of boat slips for your boat or jet ski. The
condos are located just 200 yards from the lake.
There are several new amenities close to the Shaffer’s Cove Condos such as the newly opened Food Lion
plaza located just a mile and half south on Rt 208. The new plaza offers a brand new Food Lion grocery
store, a Chinese restaurant, Subway, ABC store, veterinary
hospital, and nail salon. You are also next to Anna Point Marina which gives you access to a boat lauch, bait
and tackle shop. Shaffer’s Cove Condos are also directly across the lake from the Lake Anna Island commercial building which has a sushi restaurant, Ally’s Bar and Grill and a 24 hour gym.
