Employer branding and graduate recruitment online, in print and in person Product information 2016 “ I don’t need to tell any of you about the positive impact that gradireland has made in Ireland over the years, providing an outstanding service to graduates and employers alike. In doing so, they have forged links between our industries and businesses, our professional bodies and our academic institutions. I often think that if we didn’t have gradireland we’d probably have to provide a state body to do the same job – and I suspect it probably wouldn’t be done half as well as gradireland does it. Minister for Business & Employment, Gerald Nash, speaking at the gradireland Graduate Recruitment Awards, 30 April 2015 The official graduate careers products for Ireland, north and south Ireland’s official graduate jobs and careers information service publications, websites, events and other services are produced through the official partnership between the Association of Higher Education Careers Services and GTI Ireland. This partnership ensures the credibility and accuracy of all gradireland products and services, as well as the support and promotion of these products and services to students and graduates nationwide by their careers services. Managing Ireland’s longest running graduate placement programme gives me an enormous amount of personal and professional satisfaction. It’s fascinating and challenging to keep the programme evolving and delivering to meet the needs of employers and the ambitions of graduates. Of course ambitions need to be grounded in reality, and the reality of hard work, which is something I’ve always realised during my own career to date. I come from a family where hard work, and entrepreneurship, was always around me. A few years after I was born my mother started the company that is now Broderick Brothers bars in the basement of our house so I’ve always been aware of the realities of running a business. It’s been fascinating to watch that business grow and develop into the international operation which it now is, and I’ve learned a lot from the family connection to that business. But I always wanted to pave my own path, and to be honest I’ve always been a hard worker. When I was in school I was working in the local Centra supermarket in Terenure, where I was given an incredible amount of trust and responsibility considering my age. Business was always the area where I wanted to work and after my Leaving Cert, I went to do a degree in Business Management in IT Tallaght. I thoroughly enjoyed the whole college experience, it was a practical course and there was so much else in college to become involved in. I was very busy in so many regards, from organising nights out to becoming involved in the Students’ Union. When you take the skills I was learning in college and match them with the commercial experience I was getting from working in Centra, I was gaining a lot of the skills that are used on a day to day basis in my current role with Ibec. Things like commercial awareness, the importance of customer service, all skills that I was constantly using in through my ÌiÊÊVi}i°ÊÊ>ÃÊÜÀi`ÊÊÌ iÊ£ÊÛÃ>Ê programme during my summer holidays, so I’d built up quite a bit of good practical work experience. I learned so much, about everything from making and executing strategies to meeting with senior management, handling disputes, queries and crises. It was great to have the responsibility and the autonomy that we had, and we got some important work done. For instance, during my time in the role we successfully lobbied for and fundraised for the establishment of a crèche in the college, something which is of tremendous and lasting benefit to both students and staff. It combines online assessment of the business acumen of students in the top universities in Ireland with Final Day event-based challenges in order to identify and recognise Ireland’s brightest and most able undergraduates. The students who take part in the online assessment are ranked on an overall leaderboard. The top 60 students then progress to a Final Day contest where they complete a series of challenges which are created in conjunction with cut-e and which reflect partner companies’ recruitment criteria and core competencies. The overall winning students receive cash prizes and each challenge also produces its own individual winner. “ It’s great to see employers supporting this type of competition and getting some engagement with students.
