महारा मंडळ िशकागो वष ३९ अंक ितसरा 1 Namaskar, It is hard to believe that two-thirds of 2008 has already passed. The first half of the year was very successful. The efforts put forth by the 2008 committee were very much appreciated by all of you. Many of you complimented us in person, by phone, and via emails. The most intriguing, encouraging, and satisfying compliments were from those who could not attend the program(s) for valid reasons, but “heard” about them. I did not realize that MMC activities had a place in your private conversations! Please keep the feedbacks coming. So far, in the second half of 2008, we arranged three programs. Each was a success in its own way. I would like to take this opportunity to recognize those primarily behind the success: Annual Picnic: Thank you Hemant Chavan, Sucheta and Pankaj Akolkar for providing the equipment for “Box Cricket”, a crowd favorite. And thanks also to the local weathermen who so accurately predicted bright skies in the afternoon for that day. Independence Day Parade: Thanks to Dr Shamkant Sheth. It was his generous sponsorship that made it possible for MMC to have a beautiful float. I am happy to report that our float was the most colorful, vibrant, and LOUD! It was a true crowd pleaser and the talk of Devon! Screening of Kadachit: Thanks to the personal efforts of Sanjay Savkur, we were able to rent the theater for almost half the normal cost and break even in the end. I am glad we decided to bring this highly acclaimed movie to Chicago. It did not disappoint anyone. Now we are ready to celebrate Ganesh Utsav this week. Many of you have promptly responded to our request for RSVP. If you have not had a chance to do so, please send in your RSVP by Sept 10th. As much as we wanted everyone to come and stay for lunch, we reluctantly had to make RSVP mandatory. But, it is for the benefit of all of us. And as one of our members put it so aptly, “Isn’t it the right thing to do?” So please, do the right thing. Shyam Anturkar President, MMC 2 Come celebrate your ethnic pride With unique gift wrap! Order Diwali and other gift wrap by October 15th, 2008, to benefit Maharashtra Mandal Chicago! We created the idea of ethnic-themed gift wrap to celebrate the heritage of our countries of origin by educating our children about the meanings of common symbols and celebrations in those countries. It is also a great way to enjoy diverse cultures that may not be your own and a unique way to personalize your gift. It is a wonderful way to celebrate, preserve and share cultures and traditions. On the reverse side of each piece of wrapping paper, you will find pearls of wisdom about the symbol or celebration depicted on the other side. We believe ours is the first gift wrap ever designed that holds equal value on both sides of the sheet! Every time you open a gift wrapped in our gift wrap, you have an opportunity to learn about another culture — how great is that? Enjoy! We are offering our ethnic gift wrap as a fundraiser for Maharashtra Mandal Chicago. When you log onto our website www.globalgiftwrap.com you can benefit MMC with every purchase you make. Please add the code MMC after a dash next to your last name when you check out and we will make sure a percentage of the proceeds are donated back to MMC. We have tremendous product offerings for four core ethnicities: Asian Indian, Irish, Hispanic and Chinese. Our Indian gift wrap that we presently have available is for Diwali called Diwali-Rangoli. Please place your orders by October 15th, to allow for delivery of Diwali paper in time for the holiday. We hope you will participate in the fundraiser and celebrate your culture! Best wishes for a happy and prosperous Diwali! To make you all comfortable and feel nostalgic we are back with a bang of new Rachana edition - “Annual Ganeshotsav special!. These last 3-4 months were really special for us as we had 3 important back to back events namely, Padwa program with Mrs. Devaki Pandit in April , Suyog Natyamahotsav in May and Annual picnic in June. All three programs were great success! Thanks you all for that. Devaki Pandit’s singing performance was a feast to the ears. Her appearance and crowd fetching voice quality made the audience forget all thoughts and worries. She was accompanied by noted Tabla artist Mr. Kedar Pandit and Harmonium player Mr. Kumar Karandikar. Kalpana Neklikar read some interesting facts about Devaki and her accompanying artists. Devaki is a wellknown classical and semi classical singer and according to the true Indian classical singing tradition, she began the program with calm recitation in “Puriya raga”. Puriya raga is an early evening raga which was the best fit to start the musically enchanting evening. Being a disciple of late Pt. Jitendra Abhisheki , it was expected that she would sing some of his popular Bhajans. Again, the bhajan “Abir Gulal” took the audience on the swings of devotional notes. She also presented some new tracks from her upcoming album. Few years ago Devaki started her playback singing career with an opportunity given by Pt. Hridaynath Mangeshkar to sing his melodious composition “Sunya Sunya Maifilit mazya” on Doordarshan. By singing the same song she invigorated all old memories. In the field of music it is always said that “Devaki is a name of dignity and maturity”. We could see these qualities of hers throughout her performance. We had received many song requests from her avid fans but due to lack of time and track machine, she humbly denied the requests. She concluded this mind blowing performance by singing bhajan “Kaivalyachya Chadanyala” in raga bhairav. Though the program ended with a big applause and standing ovation, couple of fans requested her to sing one of her famous tracks “Jadto to jeev” from television soap “Abhalmaya”. She promptly accepted this request and what to say, all were showered with the harmonious tunes. This evening might have ended but I am sure we all will cherish these memories for a long time. Abhalmaya Raag-Bageshri---Devki-Pandit Neel-Rangi-Rangale---Savalee-2007---Devki-Pandit 5 After receiving an overwhelming response for the Padwa program, most awaited event of the year “Suyog Natyamahotsav” was to be followed. “Suyog production house” is well recognized for quality stage dramas like, Eka Lagnachi Goshta, Jawai maza Bhala, Char diwas premache etc. All these box office hits have been traveled to US before. This year in Suyog’s fleet were another 2 flashing titles, ‘Kabaddi Kabaddi’ and ‘Love Story’. Power packed casting of these dramas made ticket sale an easy task. Unfortunately last minute change in the cast had to be incorporated due to the denial of US VISA for main cast like Mr. Vinay Apte, Ms. Asha Shelar and few others. Thanks to people like you, who took this sportingly and enjoyed both dramas. ‘Kabaddi Kabaddi’ is a drama about forgotten authentic sport of Maharashtra, “Kabaddi”. There was a time when entire Mumbai was under the spell of this sport, but slowly it’s place was taken by other commercially successful sports and it’s charisma was eloped. This play turns around the central theme of a young daughter wanting to become a Kabaddi player and her rebellious reaction to an opponent, her own father. Mukta Barve in the lead role and director Magesh Kadan in the role of her father made this a memorable experience. Mukta’s potent acting skills stole the show. She was supported by Mangesh Kadam, Vidya Karannjikar, Shruja Prabhudesai, Nihil Ratnaparkhi and Anand Ingle. Writer Jitendra Patil also appeared in a quick role. Though this play revolved around serious topic it was made easy with some hilarious dialogues. Second play ‘Love Story’ was a light comedy which involved only four characters, Mukta Barve, Shruja Prabhdesai, Nikhil Ratnaparkhi and Anand Ingle. Here the central theme was “Expression of love”. It is difficult to confess your love, this is what the play revolves around. Actually there are only 2 central characters which are shadowed by their own minds and this makes a real fun experience! Overall both the dramas appealed to the mass and again Natyamohotsav was another successful feather in 2008 committee’s hat. Last but not the least, we are thankful to Mrs. Jayashree Vitkar, Mr. Vivek Modak, Mr. Milind Panat, Mr. and Mrs. Vishwasrao for helping us in making the guest conveyance arrangements. Also thank to all who helped us for the dinner serving during Padwa program. This year we saw very enthusiastic crowd at “Annual Picnic” held at Herik Park. Picnic is a time to have fun with all friends and to get to know new people. The actual picnic day was shadowed with dark clouds but you all present at the venue brightened the day! Thanks for making it another enjoyable picnic experience. The most awaited event of the year “Ganeshotsav” is at the doorstep now. See you all there. We are a medium to connect you to the information you would like to read, we do not have any intention to carry away credit of the original authors. This time we are talking about versatile Indian classical singer, Mrs. Savani Shende Sathye. This talented singer has won loads of accolades for her melodious singing. She is well known for her “Khyal ”style of singing. Want to know more about her? Find out by clicking the following link. This feature was published in Mayboli Diwali edition. http://www.maayboli.com/node/552 12 Paksiddhi Summer is a time to sip something cold and refreshing!!! What about traditional “Kairiche Panhe”? An excellent coolant and the best welcome drink any guest would love to have. Ingredients to make approx 10 glasses of Panha: 1 large green raw mango (when buying raw mangoes always go for the firm ones), At least 20 tspns of sugar,10 to 12 glasses of cold water,2 to 3 tspns salt, a generous pinch of saffron, pulp of 1 ripe alphonso mango (optional) Method: Peel and cook the raw mango in a pressure cooker or in a large open saucepan till soft and pulpy, Remove all the pulp from the stone after the mango has cooled a bit. Add one glass of water and the pulp of one ripe alphonso mango to it and give it a whiz with a hand blender or in an ordinary blender to make it smooth. Next add the rest of the water, sugar and salt and stir until completely dissolved. Lastly add the saffron. Give it a taste. Quantity of sugar depends on how sour the mango is. So adjust accordingly. Also increase the quantity of water if you want a thinner consistency. Chill thoroughly before serving. 13 Kahitari Aiknyajoge There are many websites which are dedicated to Marathi songs and movies.
