Issue 517 - Lakes Weekly Bulletin
www.lwb.co.nz • buy • accommodation • sell • information • jobs • th th - 21st rdSept 2015 15 27 Jan - 3 Feb 2014 FIRST ON THE STREET No No 434 517 Lakes WeekLy Bulletin 7 J 9 O IN SI BS D E [email protected] I was not surprised to see a report last week showing many regional districts in New Zealand are going nowhere economically and some are even suffering at the hands of a shrinking economy. The writing is on the wall and the Reserve Bank confirmed as much when they dropped the Official Cash Rate last Thursday. We are entering uncertain economic times. Taranaki has been the equal of the Queenstown Lakes District for a number of years in the growth stakes, both economically and in population growth. The ‘Naki’ has grown to be much more than cow country. It also has riches in oil, gas and with a landscape to die for, has branched out into tourism, arts and culture. However the plummeting oil price last year followed by the slashing of milk prices this year has taken its toll. Taranaki, along with many other smaller regions in New Zealand, is feeling the pinch and the word recession is starting to get more airtime. Yet the Queenstown Lakes just keeps rocking along. Much to the annoyance of many locals, who it could be said do not seem to understand how tough life would become should our economy start to hit a few road bumps. There is no doubt living in a district experiencing an economic boom is inconvenient at times. But as the pressure on our services ease towards the end of the winter season, many retailers, restaurateurs and tourism related industries around the Wakatipu will be starting to notice a wee dip in trade. We tend to forget about the seasonal nature of our economy when everything is rocking along at a million miles an hour. Imagine if an ‘event’ of some description (think World Trade Centre attack, Bird Flu, Chilean Ash Cloud, Christchurch Earthquake) hit the tourism industry. Because unlike Taranaki that has both Milk and Oil, we have failed in my opinion to create any diversity in our economy. Tourism rules the roost, and with all our eggs in one basket there is no Plan B. AJ Hackett and Graham Budd at the AJ Hackett staff party at Brazz on Tuesday (Photo: Jodi Walters) My suggestion to the ground swell of complainers about “how bloody busy it is” would be to take a look around the rest of New Zealand and think about where they want to live. All our “problems” are good problems to have. We are, in some peoples view, too popular and experiencing too much growth. Rather than demand we limit our growth and start to put up barriers restricting entry into the Wakatipu, if you are finding it all too much, perhaps packing your bags and heading for Masterton is the answer. They need a few extra people up there. Although they are the greatest workmates one could ask for, they do have a tenancy to involve themselves in my love life. After, by complete chance, I happened upon the man of my dreams, they took it in the wisdom to advertise for this particular guy in the Lakes Weekly to make contact with me. Unfortunately in a town where a lot of people are only here for a few days, by the time the advert went to print, he was proabably long gone. However this hasn’t stopped the many men in this town from making contact even though they are less than desirable. Men who apparently don’t understand when I say ‘I am not interested’. To my workmates, please stop with the adverts in the Lakes Weekly Bulletin, the constent messages are getting ridiculous, and it’s not just txts and phone calls but also snapchat messages too! And finally to the guys who have been sending messages, I’m not interested! Not today, not tomorrow and certainly not next week! So please stop with the D*** Pics!!! Babyface We Need To Know After a very busy winter season I have some suggestions after watching things for keeping the town moving: 4. Longer term look at reinstating the Hotops Rise Road as a one way exit from downtown 1. Don’t let campervans into the downtown area. Let them park up by the skating rink or in the Stanley St carpark. The carparks in downtown are designed for cars not campervans. They also struggle to navigate their big rigs in tight areas. 5. Make Duke St one way but reverse the one way so it comes out by the Red Rock 3. Put traffic lights in the Ballarat/Stanley St intersection and put the pedestrians underground otherwise the only way you can get out of town now in the afternoon is waiting for a pedestrian to cross the crossing. No 38% Fergs Ratepayer Funded Dining Area Issue 516 Gridlock 2. Make the intersection at the top of the mall a roundabout to make it easier turning right when you come into town. Sure my good looks are beginning to fade, and I sometimes cant get up from a chair without letting out an involuntary noise but I ask you this: WHY AM I STILL GETTING ASKED TO SHOW MY ID WHEN I BUY CIGARETTES??? ASK ME 6. Have the bus stop in Athol St rather than Camp St. Thought that was the whole idea of the redevelopment in Athol St. These ideas won’t have any impact because no-one will implement them but at least I can say I tried. I’ve lived here for ten years and all these things have been talked about all that time and the place is only getting busier. Jimmy Jammed COMMENT ON WHINGES! Go to www.lwb.co.nz On points 3, 4 and 5 Vanessa - are you serious? This debacle made headlines MONTHS before the carparks were removed by Just Dig It and you still went ahead with the removal. Why wasn’t it stopped when you knew there was a $95,000 budget blowout? Dan The Man I have heard so many people complain and say this is soooo unfair. For goodness sake people take a good look at yourselves. There seems to be a great number of Tall Poppys in this town and the envy of success is alive and well. Get real people and applaud a local success story. Just so you know Ferg, I Love You! Jimmy C Jimmy C, it’s nice that you like a burger, I do too. But if you stopped eating your burger for a minute and actually read my whinge, it’s about a well funded business getting ratepayer funded space for a rate that does not even come close to market rate, it’s about ratepayers having to contribute towards improving a private business. It’s about the fact that it has made the matter worse. It’s about the council spending ratepayer money on private business when there’s infrastructure to be repaired. Is there an alternative I can provide to Immigration NZ with my residence application? Generally, you must make reasonable efforts to obtain your full birth certificate for the purpose of your residence application. A birth certificate is not considered to be unobtainable if the process takes a long time or is difficult. As citizen’s of India regularly face difficulties obtaining birth certificates mainly due to their birth not being registered, Immigration NZ requires that you provide the following: • your passport, and • a ‘No Record of Birth Registration’ letter from the relevant municipal or village authorities where you were born, and • an identity document such as your Permanent Account Number Card or Motorised Vehicle Driving Licence, and • your school leaving certificate or 10th or 12th class passing certificate, issued by a recognised education board, which states your full name, date of birth and your father’s name if available, and • an Affidavit sworn before a Magistrate or Notary stating your date and place of birth and both parents names. It is easy to underestimate the amount of time the birth certificate process in India (or the collation of the above) can take. It is therefore advisable to start the process well in advance so you don’t risk your Invitation to Apply expiring or the application being rejected at lodgement. The Government has come to the party in August and a new legislation was passed in Parliament allowing all pubs and bars to be open for all Rugby World Cup matches without having to apply for a special license. The bill will allow NZ rugby fans to watch the games at the pub and have a beer an hour before and after the match. Schedule (NZ Time) The World Cup fever is upon us. Kick-off 19th September! With London being the host this year there are going to be some early morning viewings. The majority of the All Black’s games kick-offs are 7am or 8am with our game against Argentina being 3.45am. So where can you watch the rugby this World Cup? As you can see from our Rugby feature - Queenstown have it sorted!
