Gerhardt Grabs Vukovich Classic
The 2016 Vukovich Classic
By Kevin Tripplett
There were threatening skies early in the day on Saturday, but the 2016 Vukovich Classic at
Madera Speedway was never affected as skies cleared away for a sunlit track for qualifying. Perhaps due to the weather, the car counts for the eight open-wheel divisions (which included three
exhibition classes for vintage cars) were smaller than expected, but all the features ran quickly and
showed the fans some great racing.
The featured class for the Vukovich Classic was the Bay Cities Racing Association (BCRA)
midgets which featured twelve cars on the entry list. 2014 BCRA champion Chad Nichols was the
fast qualifier at 13.702 seconds, with the top five qualifiers all within 2/10 seconds of Nichols’ time.
Most impressive was just-turned 15-year old rookie Courtney Crone in her first race in a pavement
midget - Courtney’s racing resume includes speedway motorcycles, go-karts, and most recently
360-cubic inch wingless sprint cars. Courtney qualified sixth in Jerome Rodela’s Toyota-powered
Gerhardt sponsored by Tom Malloy’s Trench Shoring.

The re-draw after the heat races would have placed Crone on the pole position for the 30-lap
feature, but new BCRA Steward Karl Hokanson elected to place her at the rear to start the feature
due to her inexperience. That put seventh fastest qualifier Cody Gerhardt on the pole for the feature, and Cody out-dragged David Goodwill into the first turn and held on as the action was fast
and furious behind him.
Goodwill, Nick Chivello, 2015 BCRA champion Frank Guerrini III, and Nichols staged a pitched
battle for position behind Gerhardt but none of those drivers could sustain a charge to challenge
Gerhardt. Gerhardt was trailed across the finish line by Guerrini, Nichols, Chivello, and Goodwill.
Courtney Crone finished in seventh place after her race-long battle with Michael Faccinto who
drove the Tres Van Dyne owned midget after a seven-year absence from pavement racing. Nine
cars finished the feature, as only Scott Pierovich, JR Williams and nine-time BCRA champion Floyd
Alvis retired with mechanical gremlins. The BCRA midgets will be back in action on May 21 at the
¼-mile paved Ukiah Speedway on the grounds of the Redwood Empire Fairgrounds.
The author spent an enjoyable afternoon at the races with Stewart Van Dyne, who shared
stories of drivers Lance Reventlow, Mark Donohue, and AJ Foyt and working with engine building
legends that included Jim Travers, Frank Coon, Dale & John Drake, and Leo Goossen. In his years
at TRACO Engineering Van Dyne worked closely with Penske Racing on engines that included the
five-liter Ferrari 51M V-12 and the turbocharged Offenhauser engine that won the 1972 Indianapolis 500-mile race, Roger Penske’s first of sixteen Indianapolis ‘500’ victories. In this writer's opinion,
If there is any one person in racing who needs to write a book to share his life stories, it is Stewart
Van Dyne.

MIDGET RESULTS:
Fernley 95a Speedway • April 23, 2016
By Bob Roza
On a cold Saturday, several Midget car owners traveled over the Sierras into Nevada for the
first BCRA dirt Midget race of the season. Several other car owners decided not to make the trip
due to the snow and rain storm a day earlier. It also was the first race for BCRA’s new Referee,
Karl Hokanson, a former race official and a former BCRA car owner and driver.
Due to the questionable travel conditions, the light field of seven cars entered the race under
a pill-pull format. Hot laps revealed a very fast track…and resulted in Gentleman J R Williams
having a fuel issue. The heat race started 6 cars with JR in the pits working on his car. The line-up
had Brian Gard in the Arata Brothers Ellis/Chevy on the pole and Alex Schutte in the family Spike/
Esslinger on the outside. Gard took the early lead and led for 2 laps until Schutte, who was fast
and smooth all night long, took the lead and continued on for a dominate win in the 8 lap heat.
Bobby Wilson in his new TCR/Ford pulled into pits on lap 3 with an engine miss, so finishing behind
Schutte was Sean Dodenhoff, Gard, Taylor Simas in the potent Doug Bock entry, followed by 9
time time BCRA Champion, Floyd Alvis, and Wilson.
Next, a pill-pull of 4 called for an inversion of 4 for the 25 lap Main, which resulted in Simas
on the pole, and Gard on the outside front row. Gard took the lead with Schutte moving into 2nd
position while the field settled into a tight line behind the leaders on the slick and abrasive track.
Dodenhoff and Simas trailed Schutte in a close battle as the top 4 cars seperated themselves from
the rest of the field. While the leaders were racing in a very tight 4 car formation, Wilson drove his
car to the pits with a miss in his motor. On lap 11, Schutte and Gard made contact while contesting
for the lead, with both cars spinning in turn 1, collecting 3rd place runner, Dodenhoff. All three cars
were able to continue, with restart order: Simas, Alvis, JR Williams, Schutte, Dodenhoff, and Gard.
As the racing resumed, the last three cars returned to a fanatic pace as the moved around the cars
in front of them, while Simas continued to lead the race. Schutte eventually retook the lead while
Simas was running a close 2nd over Dodenhoff and Gard. On lap 23, Simas experienced a flat
right rear tire, bringing out the yellow flag. The restart order was Schutte, Dodenhoff, Gard, Alvis,
and Williams, who was having a solid run. The restart was clean and fast, and at the checkered
flag, the finishing order was:1. Schutte, 2. Gard, 3, Dodenhoff, 4. Alvis, 5. Williams, 6. Simas,
and 7. Wilson.

BCRA Vintage at The Vukovich Classic
Madera Speedway May 7th 2016
Hi Gang, well we’re up and running again, Paul and I
made the trip to Madera to watch the show. It was the 2nd
running at Madera this year for the BCRA Vintage cars. 9 of
the old beauties made the call, and as usual they put on a
great show. The weather was a little scary Saturday, as it was cloudy and looked like rain all day,
but the rain never happened. The Vintage ran the usual warm up, a heat and a 10-lap main. There
were 9 other groups running as well, so the racing went on all day.
The pits looked good with race cars all over the place. It was Paul’s first trip back after his
health problem. He was a little tired, but he soldered through the day. The 2016 Schedule card was
passed out. Our schedule is looking good, but make sure you check the dates before each event.
The regular Midgets put on an outstanding main event that the fans really love to watch, Cody
Gerhardt finish first, congrats Cody.
Also our director Tommy Belfiore showed up with his beautiful, just recently purchase RV, and
was smiling all day long with a cup of coffee in his hand. As for the vintage cars go our new member
Tom Piana showed with his Beautiful V8-60 midget for his first time and did a great job. The BCRA
