Sex Outside the Hotel Room While On Vacation
FACT SHEET / RAW DATA
The marketing department at tripcentral.ca was interested in exploring the motivations and hot buttons around
vacation travel purchases, including the importance sex while on vacation plays in the planning, memory and
vacation experience itself. We commissioned IPSOS Reid to conduct a national survey of women with a sample
size large enough to make comparisons between age groups and geography in Canada.
The first release contains information about sex outside the hotel room while on vacation – fantasy versus reality.
It will be followed by four more releases from this survey.
Survey Dates: This survey was conducted between August 17th – 24th, 2012, using an online methodology and
fieldwork.
Sample Size & Constraints: We surveyed an overall sample of 1,013 females, aged 18-60, who were in a
relationship and had taken a vacation, by plane, outside of Canada within the last 3 years. Females who were
not in a relationship and/or had not taken a vacation, by plane, outside of Canada in the last 3 years, were
screened and prevented from completing the survey.
Confidence Level: With a survey with an unweighted probability sample of this size and 100% response rate,
the total results are considered accurate to within ± 3.1 percentage points, 19 times out of 20, of what they
would have been had the entire Canadian female population, aged 18-60, that was in a relationship and had
taken a vacation, by plane, outside of Canada in the last 3 years, been polled. Data has been weighted by region
and age distribution.
Summary Slides: These contain top national results and some statistically significant facts.
Demographic Slides: Coloured cells (RED for significantly lower, GREEN for significantly higher) express
confidence-tested conclusions based on the sample size between age groups, relationship type, and the “Have”
and “Have Nots” (had sex outside the hotel room).
Caution: Small sample sizes are denoted with an asterisk. Especially for low frequency answers, such as “sex
in a sauna” (which is already within the statistical margin of error), provincial breakdowns are not statistically
significant.

Objectives and Methodology
 Tripcentral.ca commissioned Ipsos Reid to conduct a survey gauging the opinions of female vacationers
and their intimate habits while on vacation.
 Methodology:
 This survey was conducted using an online methodology and fieldwork ran from August 17th to 24th,
2012.
 An overall sample of 1,013 females, aged 18-60, who were in a relationship and had taken a
vacation, by plane, outside of Canada in the last 3 years was surveyed. Females contacted who
were not in a relationship and/or had not taken a vacation, by plane, outside of Canada in the last 3
years were screened and prevented from completing the survey.
 With a sample of this size, the total results are considered accurate to within ± 3.1 percentage
points, 19 times out of 20, of what they would have been had the entire Canadian female
population, aged 18-60, that was in a relationship and had taken a vacation, by plane, outside of
Canada in the last 3 years been polled.
 Data has been weighted by region and age distribution.

 Almost six in ten (57%) have not had sex anywhere outside their hotel room while on vacation. More
than four in ten (43%), however, have been intimate outside their room.

 A slight majority (54%) have fantasized about having sex outside their hotel room, compared to a slim
minority (46%) who say they’ve had no such fantasies.

 Places, outside their hotel room, that respondents say they have had sex in/on while on vacation include
on the beach (20%), in the ocean (15%), in the pool (14%), on the balcony (14%), in the hot tub (14%),
and on a boat (10%). Six in ten (57%), however, say they have not had sex outside their room on
vacation.

Sex Outside the Hotel Room
 Four in ten (35%) have fantasized having sex on the beach, while one-quarter (25%) have thought about
being intimate in the ocean. Other top fantasy spots included on a boat (21%), on the balcony (19%), in
the pool (19%), and in the hot tub (18%). Almost half (46%), though, have not fantasized about having
sex in any of these places listed.

Demographics
 Middle aged respondents are significantly more likely to have had sex in a number of places outside their
room compared to older respondents, and even slightly more so than younger respondents. Married or
living common law respondents are also significantly less likely to have had sex outside their room
compared to those in a relationship or those casually dating.

 Younger respondents and those who are in a serious relationship are significantly more likely to say that
have fantasized about having sex in a number of places outside of their hotel room, while older
respondents and those who are married or living common law are significantly less likely to have
fantasized about having sex in these places.

Sex Outside Room – Dreaming the Fantasy
 Among those who have had sex outside of the room while on vacation, 71% fantasized about it (or
continue to) compared to 29% who have not fantasized about it. Among those who haven’t had sex
outside of their room, 41% fantasize about doing it, while 59% do not.

 Six in ten (57%) Canadians who have fantasized about having sex outside of the room have actually done
it, while four in ten (43%) are left fantasizing about it. Only three in ten (27%) who have not fantasized
about it have actually done it, while most (73%) of those not fantasizing about it also aren’t doing it.
