Not pictured are All-State Children's Chorus members Rylie Dias, Theo Porter, and Sydney Witek. Congratulations go out to former Starr Bulldogs Ella Orr, Theo Porter, and Sydney Witek, as well as current Starr Bulldog, Rylie Dias, as they were selected to participate in the All-State Children’s Chorus. The students competed with children from all over the state, in grades 3 and 4, to receive a spot in the 100 member honors choir. This summer, the students were invited to be a part of this elite group. They will travel to regional rehearsals and then perform in January with the All-State ensemble on January 28th, 2016, at the Ohio Music Education Association State Conference. This was a highly competitive audition process with hundreds of applicants. Please join me in congratulating these exceptional music students! Volume 15 Number 1 – November 2015 Superintendent's Message Oregon City Schools Rock! On behalf of the Board of Education and the entire staff of Oregon City Schools (OCS), I would like to say a big “THANK YOU” to the residents of the City of Oregon and Jerusalem Township for Hal D. Gregory passing our Superintendent operating levy this past Tuesday. What this means for OCS is our students will continue to have local access to high quality career technical programs at Clay High School, and will continue to participate in all of the beloved after-school activities our schools have provided for decades. I am so honored and humbled by the outpouring of support our students, parents, political leaders, business leaders, farmers, senior citizens, and other local community leaders have provided for OCS throughout the past several months. The old saying “It take a village to raise a child” is still true today. Our community came together at a critical time and met the challenge for all our children. Again, THANK YOU to everyone! Moving forward, OCS will continue to prepare our students for the ever-changing future they will encounter. Teaching and learning is changing in schools everywhere, and so are we. Today’s students use computers, mobile devices, and on-line resources in place of paper, books, and encyclopedias. Students of today must be taught with a level of rigor that most of us can’t even imagine in order to compete in today’s job market. Students who graduate and go directly into the job market must have technical skills and a strong work ethic to sustain a long lasting career. Change is a constant in schools. Harnessing the educational research and applying it for increased educational outcomes is a challenge, but we are up to that challenge. There are great things ahead for OCS, stay tuned . . . . . . . . Sincerely, Hal D. Gregory Superintendent OCS Success! Go Eagles! Clay DECA Continues Tradition Of Excellence Twenty-four members of the Clay DECA Chapter traveled to the University of Findlay on September 29, to participate in the I.A. DECA Competition, the first of the year. Students competed in three areas: a test over DECA facts and employability skills, job interviewing, or a business case study relating to human resources. Twenty-one of the twenty-four members placed in their events. Senior member and Clay DECA President Jeremiah Davis was happy with the Chapter’s results. “DECA Competition was a great way to show the skills we have been working on in class, and it was cool to see everyone get a trophy and represent Clay DECA.” The students who placed in their event include: First Place Job Interview, Blue Division – Pete Snow Business Services Team Event – Jeremiah Davis, Trevor Titsworth and Callie Snyder Hospitality Services Team Event – Calli Fox, Alayna Rodriguez and Carisa Timmons Marketing Communications Team Event – Mason Cummings, RJ Stringham and Jake Vriezelaar Sports and Entertainment Team Event – Zach Brown, Chandler Cannon and Jaret Whitt Travel and Tourism Team Event – Landon Bleau, Adam Burns and Maggie Merren Fourth Place Buying and Merchandising Team Event – Markie Hughes, Madison Slovak and Alexa St. Julian Fifth Place Job Interview, White Division – Ashlyn Takacs Job Interview, Blue Division – Gary Vincent The Marketing Education Program is now a two-year program, allowing both junior and senior students to compete in DECA. Junior Pete Snow was ready to compete. “Going into the competition, I felt well prepared and was ready for the challenge that competition poses. I was very pleased with the results and look Make sure to check out the honor rolls on pages 10 - 11 The DECA competitors. forward to taking this experience with me as I continue to strive for my aspirations to reach International Competition in April. I would also like to congratulate all of my classmates who competed today, and I look forward to being a part of something special moving forward.” Snow, along with fellow junior member Ashlyn Takacs, also competed at the Ohio DECA District 2 Fall Leadership Conference. They once again competed in the job interview category, where Takacs placed third in the white division and Snow placed fourth in the blue division. The thirty-three members of the Clay DECA Chapter will compete next at the Ohio DECA District 2 Career Development Conference at Bowling Green State University on January 25, 2016. DECA prepares emerging leaders and entrepreneurs in marketing, finance, hospitality and management in high schools and colleges around the globe. It is a component of the Marketing Education Program at Clay High School for juniors and seniors interested in careers in the business industry. 2 Traveling Back To 1882 Students in Mrs. Sneed’s fourth grade class enjoyed traveling back to the year 1882, while learning about Brandville School in Oregon. Guest speaker and Oregon Jerusalem Historical Society president, Mrs. Isbell, dressed in period clothing and introduced this group of fourth graders to a variety of items, which included an oil lamp, slate, lunch pail, scuttle, and a dipper. Not sure what a dipper is? Check out the picture below of Josh, using a dipper! The fourth graders also learned that the children who attended Brandville did arithmetic, not math. During the visit, students enjoyed a guessing game with artifacts from this time period, and learned what a typical school day would have been like for teachers and students. Walking Field Trip After much anticipation, the Oregon Branch Public Library is open for business. Its close proximity to Coy School, combined with beautiful weather, made for a perfect fourth grade “walking” field trip, in which students had the opportunity to explore a new and greatly improved facility. As a community, we are very fortunate to have such a modern library available, and as a school (and school district), we are even more fortunate to have the resources the Oregon library has to offer our students, and to be so readily accessible. During their field trip, students received an introduction to the many ways the library can support their education. While forging a partnership between Coy School and Oregon’s library makes a great deal of sense for the students, Coy’s teachers will also learn what is available to assist them in the classroom. On October 21, Oregon branch librarians will attend a Coy School staff meeting to familiarize teachers with numerous databases available for their use. Twenty-first century libraries “look” very different from the libraries of yesterday. As we explore ways to combine and balance the use of technology with traditional methods of learning, the type of mutual support and partnership that Coy School and the public library system is exploring will meld the best of both worlds for students and teachers alike. Coy School looks forward to continued ventures with our neighbor and community partner in cooperative education. Pictured are: Alivia Griffiths, Olivia Karrick, Skylar Grindle, and Carlee Hart. Pictured: Ciera Cline-Moore. Officer Shaw helps students cross the intersection. Students explorer the newly renovated library. Yummy, Edible Rocks Josh using a dipper to get a drink. Third grade Starr students in Mrs. Armstrong, Mrs. Garand, Mrs. Soltesz, and Mrs. Kujawa’s classrooms have been learning about Rocks and Soil during science. The students were able to make EDIBLE rocks and soil during their science experiments. They made sedimentary rocks by putting together layers of graham crackers and chocolate frosting. They made igneous rocks by teachers using hot molten chocolate chips that cooled and hardened on the students’ desks. Next, they made metamorphic rocks by using three colors of starburst that changed with the student’s heat and pressure to make a new rock. All of our students learned just how important rocks are, and how each type of rock is formed. In the next experiment, the students were able to make each layer of soil! First they put an Oreo into the bottom of the cup. This layer is bedrock. Next they crumbled up another Oreo and placed it on top of the first one to represent subsoil. The last layer they added was chocolate pudding to represent topsoil. The students loved being able to eat their rocks and soil after the experiments were complete. Thanks so much to all the families that donated the supplies for our experiments! Emilia henneman-Dallape and Sam Grodi are spreading the layers of "sedimentary rock." Students Marisol Kimbrell, Brayden Wallace, Kylie Firsdon, Dakota Swan, and Marissa Yanez are busy making their edible rocks! Drew Schelkun, jared Flores, and Hannah Wright are making their layers of edible rock. Mrs. Sneed's 4th grade cflass visits Brandville School. Sliding Home! Thanks to the efforts and hard work of the Coy Parents Group, Coy Elementary now has its own field of dreams. The completed baseball field is a great addition to Coy School and the students, parents, and staff dedicated the field in a ceremony as part of their annual Dads Day celebration last May. The week before the official ribbon cutting, Coy students were invited to submit names for the field, and the name with the most votes was chosen. All the students who had submitted the suggestion Ram Field were part of a ribbon cutting ceremony with principal Amy Molnar. Go Rams! The dedication of Ram Field. Johnny Carter, Shelby Lewis, and Heavenly Mominee are enjoying their edible soil. Riley Rayburn made her Pet Rock Heavenly Mominee are enjoying their “Mikey”. The students wrote stories about the adventures of their pet rocks too! 3 Clay Limelighters Announces 2015-16 Season It’s A Wonderful Life! Buckeye Boys And Girls State This summer, four seniors from Clay High School completed the American Legion’s Buckeye Boys and Girls State programs. The one week camp is a hands-on, simulated local and state government camp. Girls from across Ohio gathered at Ashland College, while boys attended Bowling Green State University. A social time and reports ceremony was held for these students at the Christ Dunberger American Legion Post on August 21. Oregon City Schools would like to commend these students and thank the Christ Dunberger American Legion Post for supporting Clay High School students. Pictured in the front row: Debbie Eversman, American Legion Buckeye Girls State coordinator; students Adrienne Alore, Jessica Takacs, and Marlena McNeal The back row includes Mr. Jursky (Clay HS principal), student Noah Durczynski, Mr. Gregory (Oregon City Schools superintendent) and Gene Schurtz, American Legion Buckeye Boys State. Mathletes ROCKS And Roll Tabletop dice games offers a fun way to practice adding and writing numbers to 120. On Wednesday October 14, Starr first graders and their families enjoyed a fun night of math games and activities! Students put some hustle in their math muscle by becoming “MATHletes” in the gym, where, students used large motor muscles to jump rope, skip Students hop math facts on giant calculators. count, and hop math facts on giant calculators. In the library, tabletop dice games offered a fun way to practice adding and writing numbers to 120. Finally, it was time to find out “who took the cookie from the cookie jar?” While enjoying a snack, families learned beginning algebra skills called “missing addends” to find out how many cookies were stolen from them! It was a great night to see how math concepts can be incorporated into our everyday lives! Thank you to the Oregon School Foundation for supplying the hands-on materials for this night! How do you create a fun and memorable learning environment? Hands-on experiments, of course, and Mrs. Gyurke’s third grade class at Coy Elementary did just that. In October, the class explored earth science and rocks. In small, cooperative groups, the students shared different types of rocks and conducted experiments on their rocks. They then identified various properties of rocks. Agronomy Success On Wednesday, October 6, twenty FFA members from the Agricultural and Environmental Science Career and Technology program attended the District One Agronomy Career Development Event in Wauseon, Ohio. Members were asked to identify plants associated with agronomy, such as crops and weeds, seeds, insects, and plant diseases and deficiencies, as well as to take a written test and participate in a team activity. Out of nine teams, the Oregon Clay FFA team placed first in the district. Leading the pack was Nick LaRue, placing first out of seventy students! Also placing were Max Venia (2nd place), Sam Vincent (3rd place), Kyle Myrice (3rd place), Amanda Morris (5th place), Zack Dewitt (6th place), Brandon Sloyer (7th place), Mackenzie Upham (9th place), and Dakota Calkin (10th place). Also competing for the chapter was Joey Moore, Elizabeth Vincent, Bailey Isbell, Lexie Kolodzieski, Rylee Chancey, Kenny Moore, Allannah Chanthakham, Greg Faneuff, Rayann Diebert, and Megan Mawhorter. The team will have the opportunity to compete in the state competition in the spring. Rylee Chancey, Mackenzie Upham, and Elizabeth Vincent work through the team activity at the contest. Pierson Leohardt, Braylyn Sheetz, Kylee Peters and Aubrey Hess exploring properties of rocks. Jayne Mayes, Gavin Slovak, and Mason Heintschel, learn how to identify rocks. 4 Blast To The Past The 2015 Blast to the Past Campers pose with Oregon fire fighters. “Do you think the teachers could keep the history camp going for two more weeks? I am sad and disappointed camp is over.” These words came from the mouth of a self-described “tough” little guy. Blast to the Past Living History Camp 2015 created a lot of fun with a day in the old “sleigh” school building. Children wrote with homemade quill pens. They went home singing their new song, “School days, school days, dear old fashion school days, reading and writing and ‘rithmatic…” How the 18 campers sang! By day 4 Mrs. Summerfield led them in harmony for “Moonlight Bay.” They learned to play flutophones donated by Mr. Al Karoly. After chore day, visitors could see many Brandville School Museum items were in use again in the 21st century. Children scrubbed with lye soap, wrung a wooden wringer, beat rugs, peeled apples for homemade apple sauce, and learned to safety pin a cotton diaper onto a baby. Oh my! They thought chores were fun. At the end of the day, parents asked their children to “come home and help with laundry.” You know that went over well! Native American study day found the children creatively choosing their personal native name. Quiet Fox, Gentle Sparrow, and Swimming Fish were some of their names. After decorating personal wooden flutes, one child exclaimed, “I am so excited to have this to take home! I am going to take it on vacation and play it in the car all the way to Gatlinburg!” Pioneer Food and Fun Day included the history of our fire depart- ment and a water brigade! Sanding wood, screwing hooks, pounding hammers… all to make a gift to take home. Did you ever eat homemade cow-pies? The Blade reporter enjoyed learning about long ago games, such as Ball and Jacks, Bob for Apples, Croquet and Potato spoon race. Oh! It was FUN! When a child asks if camp can go two more weeks, we smile and say, “No, but you can come again next year.” This camp is supported by many people and businesses. These businesses and individual men provided monetary support for scholarships and supplies: Fiske Brothers Oil Refinery, Dr. Sexton, DDS, Dr. Schmidbauer, DDS, Beth Allen Florist, and Mr. Al Karoly. Thank you! Campers had the opportunity to try on firefighting gear. It takes many volunteer hours of meetings, planning, collecting materials, studying the history, and sharing the days with the students. Many brilliant, kind teachers generously give their time in summer camp every year. At least thirty people helped to collectively provide four days of enriching summer-time fun. Thank you for entrusting such precious, curious children to our care! The Oregon-Jerusalem Historical Society offers a memoryfilled adventure. HOSA Saturday, March 14, 25 Medical Technologies students from Clay High School competed in HOSA (Health Occupations Students of America) competitions held in Columbus. Those students were: Nick Buchan and Josh Ellis-EMT(Emergency Medical Technician); Kelsi Hauter, Noah Durzcynski and Hannah Clark -Public Health; Omada Miller- Prepared Speech; Leslie Martin- Veterinarian Medicine; Izaac Bonilla-Pathophysiology; Courtney Wilson-Pharmacy; Alicia Gould-Dusseau-Nursing Assisting; Vassana Phanthalasy-Medical Law and Ethics; Brooke Wilson, Shelby Stewart, Jennifer Chudey-Community Awareness; Brookelynn Avery, Kara Newton and Alexa MusselmanCommunity Awareness. Anthony Jacobs and Lorenzo Levally took 2nd place in CERT (Community Emergency Response Team), and Justin Robinson and Tyler Wilbarger took 1st place in CERT. On Broadway On August 5, The Clay High School Fighting Eagle Marching Band traveled to Columbus, Ohio, and performed at The Ohio State Fair. The band was chosen as only 1 of 2 high school bands to perform on this day, as well as the All-Ohio State Fair Band. The Clay Band marched in the 4 pm parade, performing the school’s fight song and “On Broadway.” Prior to and after the parade, the students were given time to explore the differ- ent venues of the fair, including the entertainment, fair food, and the fair rides. Students represented the school and city in grand fashion, and should be commended for their performance. Bravo! 5 Bel Canto Women's Chorus The vocal music department at Clay High School is proud to announce the formation of our newest choral group, the Bel Canto Women’s Chorus. The Italian term “Bel Canto” translates into “beautiful song,” and is a fitting title for this talented and dedicated group of vocalists. Already the chorus has performed at Little Sisters of the Poor, LanePark of Oregon, the Ohio School Board Association’s regional conference, and the vocal department’s College Concert. Bravo ladies! The newly formed Bel Canto Woman's Chorus. The Bel Canto Chorus performed at the Ohio School Board Association's regional conference. Reading Kickoff! Surf's Up! Coy students had the chance to maintain their math skills at the annual Coy Summer Math Club. The club helps prevent “summer slide.” Coy teachers came together to produce a crazy “Surfin USA” video to promote the event which invited students to participate weekly giving them a chance to win some great prizes. Students had the option of practicing their math facts any way they wanted. They then took two timed tests per week, and kept track of how much time they spent studying weekly. Over seventy students participated in the club with a total of 42,750 minutes of math practice time logged! They scored some awesome rewards: Sky Zone-Andrew Wagoner; Bowling- Izzy Duvendack; Jellyfish Lamp- Cole Tobias; Tick n Tater-Lily Stine; Dairy Depot- Kieara Vartorella and Jessica Joyce; Dancing Water Speakers-Reagan Haskell and Carter Baxter; Rave Movie- Alexis Amundsen; Drive In Passes- Dylan Champion; Volcano Lamp-Nathan Ringle; Zoo Pass -Aubrey Hess; Water Limbo Sprinkler-Catelyn Hart; Lava Lamp-Conner Sentle; Maryann OrraYMCA Swim membership; Gabby Duvendack- Mud Hens Tickets; Nick Zieroff- Imagination Station membership; and Maumee Bay day passesJaelyn Rowe. Our thanks go out to all the donors, and a “Way to go!!!” to all the students and family members who participated. Students earned points for their Math Club performance. Just racking up the points. On Tuesday, October 6, the Clay football team kickedoff a reading program at Starr Elementary School. Players read stories about teamwork and working together to the students. Once a week, a group of players continue to read to students of all grade levels, including multiple handicap and special needs classrooms. So far, 28 football players have read with more than 15 different classrooms! Mrs. Conkle with the CHS football players who volunteered their time to read to Starr students. Students listen to a story about leadership. 6 This past summer, the Oregon Community Theater Children’s Show put on a great performance of Rodgers and Hammerstein’s The Sound of Music. It was a great performance that involved over 100 cast and crew from Oregon and surrounding communities. However, shows such as this do not go on without the help of many adults and youth mentors who build sets and work back stage during the production. I was asked to help out with production this year by managing the youth mentors with scene changes and by helping the students get on stage for each each scene. This was a difficult task, especially when there are over 100 children whom I have never met before, in grades 2-8. The youth mentors really helped make my job easier, along with making a smooth production for the children on stage. Most of the youth mentors were students at Clay High School, but there was also help from students in Genoa and Cardinal Stritch. Many of these youth mentors were once in the summer children’s theater program when they were younger. It is a great pleasure, as an educator, to see many of these students come back to volunteer their time in a hot auditorium in the summer for no pay to help grow the next generation of actors. It certainly does take a community The Sound Of Music The back stage crew, Front row: Wes Sneed, Keaton Gargac, Craig Bruns, and Paige Titsworth. Thank you, youth mentors, for your help to make a great show and experience for our younger per- formers. Mr. Kuzdzal - Band Director at Fassett Junior High Foamy Fun Run Thanks in part to the Oregon Fire Department, Coy Elementary was able to combine exercise with a foamy cleanup at the end! On September 26, Coy’s Parents Group sponsored a Foamy Fun Run. The five K run also had the option of a kids’ one-mile run or run-walk waves so there was something for everyone! Almost 150 people participated in the event and enjoyed the slime pool, the foamy Slip and Slide, and the extra foam produced by the Oregon Fire Department. The Coy PGA, led by Fun Run coordinator Sara Hanthorn, is looking to repeat the event next year, and they hope to add more foam, more Slip and Slides, and BIGGER obstacles! Attendance was great, and a special thanks goes out to the many volunteers who got up with the birds (and mosquitos) to help out. Thanks also to sponsors: Alan Miller Jewelers, Bennett Enterprises, Promedica, Mercy St.Charles, Toledo Refining Company, Michael’s Catering, and Joseph Sexton DDS, for making the event such a success! Pictured is Aidan Schroeder. Pictured is Nathan Waite. Students enjoyed the foamy Slip and Slide. Rainforest Adventure Students display their artwork. Summer Art Camp: Rainforest Adventure! was held at Starr School for a week this summer, and over 30 third and fourth grade students participated! Thanks to a grant from the Oregon School’s Foundation, which purchased all art supplies, students were able to attend the program for free. Each day students studied a different layer of the rainforest, including its plants and animals, and then created artwork relevant to the layer of the day. Julie Ford, school counselor, Tracy Venia, kindergarten teacher, Max Venia, student volunteer, and Angie Hales, parent volunteer, all worked together to help make Summer Art Club a fun, engaging, educational, and enriching experience for all who participated! 7 Playing In The Dirt Relevancy Project As part of the course relevancy project launched by Oregon City Schools alumni, Jim Stewart and Marty VanScoy visited the eighth grade gifted and talented students during STRIDE to discuss some of the social and emotional pressures of giftedness. During their visit, they discussed their own experiences, handling perfectionism, and building positive family and peer relationships. The Muddy Eagle mud run ended with the school year last year, but the Oregon City School district evidently was not finished playing in the dirt. Beginning in 2011, the Ohio EPA began to inspect the Eisenhower waste water treatment plant. The plant, after many meetings and discussions, no longer was a viable option to treat the sewage from Eisenhower Intermediate School. In October 2014, the district, under mandate from the EPA, had to present alternative options for sewer treatment. The options identified by the district were to: 1. tie our system into the current waste water treatment facility, 2. Update our current facility and/or hire or contract out a licensed operator to manage and maintain the treatment facility as required by revised law. The best option for Oregon City Schools was to connect to the City of Oregons’ waste water treatment facility. Cash Services, L.L.C was awarded the bid in the amount of $209,952.50. These monies were taken from the Permanent Improvement Funds; specifically, the Emergency Fund portion of these dollars. “This option would not have been possible if not for the City of Oregon agreeing to allow us to tap into their system and landowner James Dippman allowing us to make a straight shot across the field to tie into the city sewer,” Dean Sandwisch, Director of Business Affairs for the school district, said. The necessary evil of making this big repair was softened a bit in knowing that this project was done completely and at the highest quality and that this project will serve the needs of students for years and years to come. Can You Hear The Sound? students have had many new and exciting opportunities to learn music. On any given day, students are playing instruments, singing and moving to different styles of music, and participating in musical games and activities to learn about the different elements of music. Music education has certainly transformed in the last few decades, and it truly is an important part of a well-rounded education. Take a brief look into our music classroom and see all the different ways that we are creating music! Music education is growing at Starr Elementary School! This fall, Mrs. Martin's first graders are learning how to sing and play instruments at the time. Students in Mrs. Price's class are busy getting ready for our Veteran's Day Concert. Thank you to Peg Connelly for the wonderful piano that was donated to the Starr music program. Pictured right: First and second graders are busy playing the xylophones and metalophones, while chanting an easy nursery rhyme. Get ready! The third graders are using kazoos for their fall concert! It's going to be fantastic! Jim Stewart and Marty VanScoy visited the eigth grade gifted and talented. Out Of This World Art Club is up and running at Starr Elementary, and students are enjoying every minute! Every Tuesday after school, 25-35 students draw, color and paint along side Julie Ford, Art Club advisor, and Pam Newton, parent volunteer. Students explore various subject matter and techniques using media such as watercolor, tempera, oil pastel, chalk, colored pencil and marker. Shown in the photos are students creating outer space art using oil pastels on black construction paper, connecting to their school’s theme this year, which is “Starr School is Out of This World!” Art students work on their "Out of This World" masterpieces. Don't forget to check out dates and times on page 3 for the 2015-2016 Season of Limelighters 8 Seven Habits The eighth grade gifted and talented students just finished The Seven Habits of Highly Effective Teens, a nonfiction informational text, in which they presented one of the seven habits to the rest of the class. Students also explored current events and the movie, Rudy, to apply the habits to other experiences than those presented in the book. Finally, the students created their own mission statements involving their driving principle to focus on their future. Support For 6th Grade Camp Appreciated The students and 6th grade teachers of Eisenhower Intermediate School, along with Mr. Holcombe, would like to thank the members of our community for being so supportive of our Camp Michindoh fundraisers. First, the people of Oregon were willing to bring their cars to the September 19th car wash, where our 6th grade crew washed over 125 cars. Despite the occasional rain, the students, parents, and teachers had a great day. Then, much to everyone’s surprise, our Ike 6th graders were able to sell more than 1,500 Marco’s cards. These cards were made available to us through the amazing generosity of the Marco’s Corporation. We cannot thank them enough. Marco’s kindness goes a long way toward helping students pay their own way to camp. Once again, it was the participation of both Marco’s and the great people of Oregon that made this sale a success! Jackson Kennedy and Miss Ovall trade dough. The Letter "F" Maddie Dykema presents the final habit, Sharpen the Saw. Maddie Dykema leads the students in strengthening their bodies through exercise. For Letter “F” Week in Ms. Karen Seckinger’s class, the students made flubber, and had a visit from Firefighter Jim. The students had fun playing with the flubber and learned some very important details about fire safety. A student mixes a batch of flubber. Alex Skitowski and Madison Fournier present the habit, Win-Win. Students enjoyed playing with the Flubber they created. Check out our Honor Roll on pages 10 and 11 www.oregoncityschools.org Fireman Jim taught students about fire safety. 9 Washing Their Way To Camp Have you ever known of a business that is open only one day to be a success? Many sixth grade students, their parents, and several sixth grade teachers opened, and closed, a successful business Saturday, September 19. The ninety students, 45 parents, and Eisenhower staff members combined to make one speedy car washing machine. In just six hours, the lightning fast group washed 126 cars! The car wash activity provides students with two meaningful opportunities. First, the car wash is an opportunity for students to learn the importance of working for something that they want, instead of having it handed to them. Second, the money earned enables students to participate in one of the great sixth grade traditions . . . a trip to camp! The students and staff of Eisenhower realize that they are incredibly fortunate to live in a community that has so many people who are willing to support them. We would all like to thank everyone who was kind enough to bring their car(s) through the car wash. You all play a In just six hours the lightning fast group washed 126 cars! significant roll in helping to send our students to camp! Thanks again! Our 6th grade class is so large that we need to divide our students into two groups for Camp Michindoh. One group will attend the week of Nov. 30, and the second group will attend the week of December 7. Have a great, meaningful time, 6th graders! Getting Involved The Agriculture and Environmental Sciences Career and Technology program and FFA Chapter teamed up with Mr. Carstensen’s Environmental Sciences class and took part in the local Clean Your Streams program, a nationwide event in which volunteers from all over clean streams in their area. It was a tough morning battling through the weather and mosquitos, but overall ended up being a great experience. Clay was assigned to clean the stream that runs through the Oregon Recreation Facility as well as along North Stadium Road. Softballs, footballs and even a traffic cone were found! After a workfilled morning, Clean Your Streams held a lunch for all the volunteers to enjoy after all of their hard work. It was, no doubt, a fun and rewarding experience in which our programs hope to participate next year. Jerusalem teacher, Robin Sneed, was one of three teachers chosen to participate in a two week teacher in residence program at the Ohio History Connection (formerly known as Ohio Historical Society). While there, she learned about and examined many rare and unique artifacts unearthed in Ohio throughout the past two centuries, many of which were made by Ohio’s early inhabitants around 4.000 years ago. Additionally, Mrs. Sneed worked with several archaeologists, biolo- gists, historians, re-enactors, and architects. The information gathered during this unique program will enrich her teaching of Ohio’s history, which she will pass along to her class of fourth grade, gifted students. 10 Oregon City School Honor
