Welcome

CAFE ART
I have great pleasure in presenting the
2016 St Ives September Festival
programme. Our aim each year is to
create a diverse and appealing
programme of music, theatre, art and
the spoken word, and this year we have
included a greater diversity than ever, as
a look through this programme will
testify.

This year the Festival information point
will be Café Art in Royal Square where
daily updates on programme details can
be found along with a comments wall
where Festival goers can post their
experiences of being in St Ives this
September. Alongside a myriad of
venues around the town the Café will
also be hosting events so get along
there and enjoy the coffee and the craic.
Each year brings with it new financial
challenges and the support and
recognition of the local business
community is essential to the ongoing
health of the Festival and we’re pleased
to receive the support of the St Ives
Business Improvement District team,
particularly those businesses who
support us over and above their BID
contribution.

Modern Times (1936)
Annie Hall (1977)
Saturday 17th September 7.30pm
Tickets: £5.50
Monday 12th September 7.30pm
Tickets: £5.50
Directed by Charles Chaplin and
starring Charlie Chaplin and
Paulette Goddard.
As the iconic character The Tramp,
Chaplin plays an assembly-line worker
driven insane by the monotony of his
job. On release from the asylum and a
spell in jail he meets and is smitten by a
feisty orphaned gamine and becomes
her friend and protector as they attempt
to survive in a new industrial age.
Modern Times is a timeless piece of
comic genius.
...........................................................................
Did you know ...
Charlie Chaplin allows The Tramp to
speak on camera for the first time during
the restaurant scene, but insisted that
what The Tramp says is universal. The
song The Tramp sings is in gibberish, but
it is possible to follow the story he tells
by his superb acting and hand gestures.
30
Directed by Woody Allen and starring
Woody Allen and Diane Keaton.
This comedy is a classic boy meets girl
story. A neurotic forty-something
divorcee, Alvy Singer (Woody Allen),
examines the rise and fall of his
relationship with Annie Hall (Diane
Keaton), a flighty insecure nightclub
singer.
Annie Hall is full of intellectual wit and
raw emotional edge. It bursts with
beautiful comedy and is a must for any
Woody Allen fan.
...........................................................................
Did you know ...
Woody Allen and Diane Keaton had
trouble keeping a straight face when
working together. An example of the
uncontrollable laughter between the two
was the lobster dinner scene. It was the
first scene shot for the movie and
neither Woody nor Diane had to do
much acting for the scene as their
laughter was completely spontaneous.

The Big Lebowski (1998)
Tuesday 20th September 7.30pm

Friday 23rd September 7.30pm
Tickets: £5.50
Directed by Billy Wilder and starring
Marilyn Monroe, Tony Curtis and
Jack Lemmon.
Directed by Joel & Ethan Coen and
starring Jeff Bridges and John Goodman.
When two struggling musicians witness
The St Valentine’s Day Massacre they
need to get-outta-town and escape the
gangsters responsible. Joe (Tony Curtis)
and Jerry (Jack Lemmon) cross-dress to
secure a gig in an all female band
heading to Florida. This screwball
comedy fizzes from start to finish; with
its flawless script and superb
performances it deserves its place
amongst the greats.
...........................................................................
Did you know ...
When Tony Curtis and Jack Lemmon
first put on the female make-up and
costumes, they walked around Goldwyn
Studio lot to see if they could ‘pass’ as
women. Then they tried using mirrors in
public ladies rooms to fix up their makeup, and when none of the women using
it complained, they knew they could be
convincing women!
The Big Lebowski is all about attitude.
This cult classic does have a story, but
really, it’s the attitude that pulls the film
together. In this trippy, visually rich film
Jeff Bridges lets his hair down as Jeff
Lebowski ‘The Dude’, an easy going
throwback who is mistaken for the less
laidback ‘Big Lebowski’, a mean
tempered millionaire. This film is packed
with unforgettable characters and great
dialogue.

Did you know ...
Before filming a scene, Jeff Bridges
would frequently ask the Coen Brothers
“Did The Dude burn one on the way
over?” If they said he had, he would rub
his knuckles in his eyes before doing a
take to make his eyes appear bloodshot.
P.S. The jellied sandals that Jeff Bridges
wears throughout the movie are his
own!
