CENTRAL SPEAKS FOOTBALL CENTRAL August 20, 2015 • Daily News at CentralSpeaks.com SPECIAL EDITION Central’s Biggest Tailgate September 12 Cooking in Central will present “Central’s Biggest Tailgate” on Saturday, September 12 from 10 a.m. until 12 midnight. The event will be held at Amazing Place at 10305 Blackwater Road (between Hooper and Comite). This year’s funds raised will go primarily to maintain and upgrade the property so that next year’s full Cooking in Central event can be a successful event at Amazing Place raising funds for more good causes. There will be fun, food, and games for the family. A day of food and fun will end with a showing of the LSU/Mississippi State football game that begins at 8:15 p.m. The game will be shown on a giant screen for the community. In addition to the football game, other entertainment throughout the day will include several live music acts and kids’ events like an obstacle course, wet slide, crafts, games, geocaching, 9 square, and archery lessons. For event passes or other info, call 933-0059 or 413-5702. Three Arrested for Theft at Walmart Michelle Kibbe was arrested after she failed to pay for all her items at Walmart. Kibbe placed several items in her purse, paid for an oil change and items in her cart, and left without paying for the items in her purse. She was stopped by an Asset Protection employee and held in the AP office until a deputy arrived. She stated “I don’t know what I was thinking. I think it was the Prozac that made me do it.” She was then transported to the East Baton Rouge Parish Prison and booked accordingly. Kibbe had a previous Misdemeanor for stealing at the same Walmart on July 18 and two active warrants. On August 6, 2015 Naquilla Odom was seen on surveillance by a loss prevention employee at Walmart taking a Diaper Genie out of the box and placing 20 cans of baby formula into the box as well as placing other items into empty Walmart bags and attempting to leave without paying. The items totaled $334.78. The loss prevention employee stopped Odom, recovered the items, and called EBRSO. Odom had five previous convictions for Theft of Goods. A deputy contacted Odom and she stated that she would meet the deputy at the Central substation which she failed to do. The deputy then issued a warrant for her arrest and she was arrested and booked accordingly. On August 15, 2015, Michael Birks was arrested and booked for two counts of Theft of Goods. He was seen by a Walmart manager leaving the store with a cart full of items, including laptops, speakers, and jewelry, totalling $1282.99. He ran into the parking lot across the street. A deputy followed Birks and detained him. Birks admitted to the theft and stated that he was stealing to pay for another theft charge he got from stealing at Cortana Walmart. He was arrested for that theft on June 27, 2015. Birks was later identified as the suspect in a previous theft which occurred on August 13 at the same Walmart. On that date, Birks was observed on surveillance footage taking three flat screen TVs ($894 total) without paying. He was re-booked accordingly. In addition to those listed last week, EBRSO would like to thank Walmart and LaFleur’s Plumbing for their assistance in making the Back to School Block Party a success. Thank you so much for your help! Sports Central Volleyball Night At 5PM this Thursday Coaches Sid Edwards and Steve Johnson will host the Sports Central radio show on FM 91.9. Radio Amor is a Central-based, station with a strong FM signal from their Clinton tower, making it one of the stronger FM signals in Central. Guests on the show this week will be CHS volleyball coach Michelle Leboeuf and two of her players. The show airs live every week from Coaches Grill in Central Square behind CVS. Radio Amor is normally a Spanish language station but has made the decision to become further involved in the Central community by carrying Sports Central and the CHS Friday night football broadcasts in English. We appreciate the community spirit of Radio Amor. 2 CITY Thursday, August 20, 2015 • CentralSpeaks.com Print Edition Crime Stoppers: Have You The Central Chamber Report: Seen These Fugitives? Why a Raffle? www.crimestoppersbr.com Call Toll Free at 1-877-723-7867 Crime Stoppers will pay cash reward for information leading to the arrest of these WANTED FUGITIVES: This fall we will raffle off a Honda Rancher 4 wheeler and trailer at the half time of the October 23rd Central High football game. Many times I get asked, “Why does the Chamber do a raffle?” This week I would like to answer that question. The Central Chamber is a nonprofit organization that exists to help promote the business and professional interests of its members and enhance the economic, cultural, and recreational opportunities for the citizens of Central. The Chamber realizes that one of the ways we fulfill this mission and help keep the future of our local economy strong is by encouraging and supporting our community’s quality educational institutions. Therefore we support a variety of our local school system’s programs such as student of the year, teacher of the year, support staff of the SEAN MATTHEW CHOPIN FRANK ANTOINE ROBINSON DOB 09/10/1988 DOB 02/20/1982 WHITE/MALE BLACK/MALE 5’06” HGT / 175 WGT 5’11” HGT / 185 WGT BROWN HAIR/ BROWN EYES BLACK HAIR / BROWN EYES WANTED FOR: WANTED FOR: POSSESSION OF SCH II CDS DOMESTIC ABUSE BATTERY POSSESSION OF MARIJUANA WITH CHILD ENDANGERMENT ABUSE OF TOXIC VAPORS SECOND DEGREE BATTERY POSSESSION OF DRUG PARAPHERNALIA If you have any information on these fugitives contact Crime Stoppers at 344-STOP(7867), text CS225 plus your message to CRIMES (274637) or email us anonymously from our facebook page or website www.crimestoppersbr.com **Remember you do not have to give your name to collect this or any Crime Stoppers Reward but you must call Crime Stoppers ** These fugitives are active as of August 19, 2015 CONTACT Central SpeakS 13513 Hooper Road P.O. Besides supporting these programs, the Central Chamber also awards scholarships every year to two local high school seniors who reside in the City of Central. We are proud to support these initiatives, however, they require funding. Since we are a private nonprofit organization, we do not receive government funding nor do we receive any sales tax dollars, etc. All of the Chamber’s funding comes through our members’ investments and through fund raisers. Thus, the reason we do the raffle! When you buy a raffle ticket, you not only secure the chance of winning this brand new Honda 4 wheeler and trailer but you help the Central Chamber with its various educational initiatives. In 2013, the person who won bought 50 tickets. However, in 2014 the person who won the raffle bought just one ticket! Over the next few weeks tickets will be available at the Chamber’s office and at a variety of local area merchants. Remember, when you buy your ticket, you are helping to support education and the Central business community. If you have any questions, please call the Central Chamber at 261-5818. After several unsuccessful attempts to contact her, Brown’s whereabouts are still unknown and she is considered “at large.” Anyone with information concerning this incident or the whereabouts of the suspect is asked to contact the East Baton Rouge Sheriff’s Office at 225-389-5000. By Mia Freneaux Flax Fabrix, your one stop shop for all things elegant yet affordable, announces the opening of The Design Center. Owner Liz Kirkindoll welcomes two designers to her business: Becky Lawrence and Kelly Hayes. Wanting to make decorating the home as easy as possible, Liz invited these talented ladies to join her to offer expert advice on fabric and paint selection, accessorizing, and furniture placement. Becky is a 40 year interior decorating veteran. With a BFA in Interior Design from Louisiana Tech and having owned her own shop in St. Charles Parish, Becky has the experience to guide a client into discovering that perfect style and color combination. Kelly has a degree in Art and Merchandizing with 20 years’ experience in the business. Her specialties include the hot trend of repurposing of found pieces into something new and fresh. Kelly summed up everyone’s philosophy with this, “We are creating a design center for both designers and walk in clients; a place where both can feel at home while working on their project.” All of the ladies offer the ability to take a client’s vision to reality, no matter what style the client embraces. From Victorian to Mid Century Modern to completely Eclectic, the Design Center can help create a warm, personalized interior unique to every client’s tastes. Now stocking paint chips from Benjamin Moore, Sherwin Williams, Valspar, and Farrell Calhoun along with 4 new lines of fabric, Flax Fabrix’s Design Center is prepared to handle every decorating challenge. In addition, original artwork by local artists is being offered. Three of these artists are multi-talented Becky, Kelly, and shop assistant Debbie Kuhns! This Thursday, Friday and Saturday from 10-5, Flax Fabrix will be holding an Open House and sale. All in-house fabrics and trims are 25% off! In Memoriam: James Dunbar “Dun” Stockwell James Dunbar Stockwell “Dun”, loving husband, father, and grandfather, passed away at home on August 15, 2015 at the age of 66 after a valiant battle with mesothelioma cancer. He was born in Baton Rouge, LA on October 12, 1948. He was a lifelong resident of Central, LA. Dun was a graduate of Central High School where he played basketball for the Wildcats and in 1965 helped his team win the District Championship. Dun attended Southeastern Louisiana University and graduated with a Masters of Physical Education and Exercise Physiology. Dun’s early career began with the YMCAs in Baton Rouge, Birmingham AL, and Charlotte NC. As a branch director where he mentored and taught leadership skills to many young high school students and encouraged those students to attend the YMCA Blue Ridge Leadership School. Then, after moving back to Baton Rouge, he worked at Allied Chemical Corporation for two years. He later went on to work for the Louisiana Department of Health and Human Resources in the Long Term Care Section. Most of Dun’s career was spent as an administrator of several nursing homes, some of which included Hendersonville NC, New Orleans, Clinton, Hammond, Natchitoches, and many in Baton Rouge. Dun loved his nursing home patients and employees. His true focus was their care and concern and he kept their spirits lifted with jokes and playful teasing. While working in North Carolina, Dun fell in love with the mountains of the Blue Ridge Parkway. Outside of spending time with his family, being in the mountains was his heaven on earth. Each year for over 10 years, Dun would lead a group of “Feral Country Boys” to Mount Pisgah where they enjoyed white water rafting, zip lines, duckies, hiking, and camping. Dun also enjoyed his yard and flower gardens and devoted many hours making things look just perfect. Dun recently rededicated his life to Christ and was baptized at his childhood church, Zoar Baptist Church in Central. Family was a priority for Dun. He loved nothing better than to have all the family over to his home for fried fish or boiled crawfish. Dun fell in love with Sandra Bernard Stockwell in the seventh grade, married her in 1968 while he was away in college and she remained the center of his life for 47 years. He is also survived by his children Richard “Richie” Stockwell, Stephanie Stockwell Hunter and husband Barrett, Natalie Stockwell and beloved family member Kris Blanchard as well as his grandchildren Shaunae Stockwell Borrego, Lance Stockwell, Carson Stockwell, Rachel Hunter, Annison Hunter, Nathan Hunter, Samantha Hunter, and great-grandson Landon Bonowicz. Dun is also survived by his sisters Juanita Dean Dykes and Jeanie Valentine as well as a brother Lonnie Stockwell and his wife Maureen; sister-in-law Becky Kennison and brothersin-laws Michael Bernard and wife Diana, Taylor Bernard and John Bernard and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, LaVerne and Leon L. Stockwell, mother and father-in-law Betty and Joseph Taylor Bernard, Jr., brothers-in-law Dennis Dykes and Michael Valentine and niece, Jennifer Valentine. A Celebration of Dun’s Life will be held at Zoar Baptist Church, 11848 Hooper Road, Baton Rouge, LA 70818 on Friday, August 21, 2015 with visitation starting at 9:00AM and a service to begin at 11:00AM. In lieu of flowers, please send donations check made to: Blue Ridge Leadership School Alumni Association (BRLSAA) and in the memo line put YMCA-Dun Stockwell Scholarship Fund. Mail to: Tom Whortan, 5930 Six Mile Lane, Louisville, KY 40218. We want to thank St. Joseph Hospice Carpenter House nurses and staff for their special care during his last few days. ANNOUNCEMENTS 23 24 ANNOUNCEMENTS Thursday, August 20, 2015 • CentralSpeaks.com Print Edition Chrysa Harris to Marry Cody Wallace and Joyce Edwards Hopkins at the Lake at Oak Hill Celebrate 68th Anniversary Chrysa Nicole Harris of Zachary, LA and Landon Cody Hopkins of Zachary, LA will marry on the evening of April 16, 2016 at the Lake At Oak Hill in Ethel, LA. The bride-elect is the daughter of Ms. Sandy Beasley of Baker, LA & Mr. & Mrs. Jerry Harris of Central, LA. She is the granddaughter of Ms. Helen Beasley and the late Mr. Jerry Beasley of Baker, LA and the late Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Harris of Cottonport, LA. The bride-elect is a 2005 graduate of Zachary High and attended Southeastern & BRCC. She is employed at Dr. Jeffery K. Machen, Orthodontics. Her fiance is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Harvey Hopkins of Zachary, LA. He is the grandson of the late Rev. and Mrs. Eugene Rowland of Monticello, MS and Mrs. Genevieve and the late Mr. Estelle Hopkins of Slaughter, LA. He is employed as a foreman at the Baton Rouge Water Company. An engagement party hosted by the bridal party and family was held on May 8, 2015. Wallace and Joyce Edwards recently celebrated 68 years of marriage. After dating for 8 months, Wallace and Joyce decided to marry one weekend, knowing they wouldn't have to go back to work until Monday. Their wedding took place August 8, 1947, at Blackwater Methodist Church with just the minister, the pianist, a soloist, and 2 attendants: best man Cooter Sides and Maid of Honor Bobbie Hodgeson. Nettie Sides, their youth counselor, was there to pull out the kerosene lamps when a passing thunderstorm took out the electricity. They then drove to Mandeville in Wallace's 1936 Ford (seen in the photo) to stay at the St. Tammany Hotel. There they were greeted in the morning by lots of car horns. "It was our youth group from Blackwater," Wallace laughed. "They were on their way to Mississippi and stopped to say hello!" Wallace, a World War II veteran who went through the war with his dear friend Cooter, gave some advice on how to achieve 68 years: "Share a hobby. Joyce and I have travelled the United States together bird watching. Don't put off doing things together, enjoy your time now." He added with a twinkle, "And know when to keep quiet." The Edwards' have 3 children, 6 grandchildren, and 8 great-grandchildren. They are a real example of what true devotion in a marriage is. Congratulations on reaching this milestone!
