Temple Israel of Riverhead December 2012 Volume #1 8 Bulletin 490 Northville Tpke., P.O. Box 1531, Riverhead, New York 11901-0954 Email: [email protected] www.TempleisraelRiverhead.org Kislev/Tevet 5773 Issue #10 Temple Office: (631) 727-3191 Rabbi’s Study: (631) 369-5997 Rabbi William Siemers Dear Temple Family, In This Issue President’s Message Hanukkah Bazaar and Brunch Capital Campaign Continues 1, 2 3 4, 5 Hanukkah Gelt Raffle 7 Special Guest 8 President Barbara Smith I hope that this message finds you all healthy, satisfied from the Thanksgiving weekend with family and friends, and looking forward to your Hanukkah celebrations. We have so much to be thankful for this year, especially after the terrible devastation brought on by Superstorm Sandy, and the nor'easter that followed right behind it. After the storm, our building was without power and heat, but we continued to thrive, holding services at a temporary location at 633 E. Main St. in Riverhead. It has been challenging, but we have managed to continue with our membersponsored Shabbat dinners on Fridays, and Kiddush luncheons on Saturdays. Our power has been restored, and hopefully by the time this bulletin reaches you, we will have heat and will be back at "home." (Continued on page 2) Hanukkah and the Hanukkah Gelt Raffle Are Coming! Temple Israel of Riverhead 1 December 2012 (President—continued from page 1) In the meantime, the capital project at our temple has been moving right along. If you haven't seen the building, you should really come by and take a look. The brickwork is nearing completion, and the exterior portion of the lobby is about to be completed. Rich Israel would be glad to give you a tour after services any Saturday. all of us. By supporting this project, we can assure that our building will be there for us, our parents, and our children, when we need it. 100 years ago, it was the men and their families who started a brotherhood of Jews. 60 years ago, their descendants built our current temple. Now, we are upgrading and renovating that building with improvements to serve us now, and ensure that we can provide for our community for many years to come. We need to raise a total of $200,000 to complete phase two. We are only halfway there, and we need each and every one in our temple family to help us fill the gap and make this new addition a reality. We continue to operate our temple on a very modest budget, and we do not assess members for a building fund, as we have not incurred any debt. I know that we are in difficult times, but if we all work together as a community, we can raise the money we need and make our dream of a handicapped -accessible building a reality. I want to thank everyone who has supported this project so far, and I hope that everyone will help us meet this challenge and goal. Please plan on joining us for the Hanukkah Bazaar and Brunch on December 2nd, and the Hanukkah Gelt Raffle Celebration on the 8th (details inside). May the light of the Hanukkah candles bring you all the warmth and wonder of the season, and may you all be well. Perhaps you might consider a donation before the end of the year, which can be used as a tax write-off. I ask that you give what you can, as every little bit helps, but please support this important project. Our temple's continued prosperity depends on Temple Israel of Riverhead See you in temple! Barbara Smith 2 December 2012 Temple Israel of Riverhead 3 December 2012 Temple Israel Grows—Thanks to You Visit us at www.TempleIsraelRiverhead.org to view in color Temple Israel of Riverhead 4 December 2012 Temple Israel of Riverhead 5 December 2012 Winter Shabbat Dinners Continue Friday night Shabbat services begin at 5:30 PM, followed by a community dinner. Join us for services and dinner. It a great way to begin Shabbat. Consider sponsoring a Friday night dinner for $180.00, but join us whether you are a sponsor or not! Kol Nidre Appeal As we move into 5773, we continue to need our membership and friends to preserve the health and well-being of our beloved temple. It is a tradition in congregations to establish a Kol Nidre Appeal Fund; at Temple Israel this fund is vital to help supplement the dues and thus cover our operating expenses. Therefore, we ask each one of you, if you have not already donated, to be as generous as possible, so our temple may continue to meet the growing needs of the Jewish community.
