At age 78 and still going strong, Hadley is part of the living history of jazz music in America. He has performed, recorded and toured with musicians such as Freddie Hubbard, Gerald Wilson, Carlos Santana, Dexter Gordon, Elvin Jones, Mongo Santamaria, Joe Pass, The Grateful Dead, Joe Henderson, Don Ellis, Flora Purim, Phoebe Snow, Bobby Hutcherson and many others. Hadley’s influence on the sound of modern jazz music can be heard on many of his albums as a leader, including Gratitude, his newest release on Origin Records, which features drummer Joe LaBarbera, vibraphone master Joe Locke and trumpeter Thomas Marriott. Hadley is an active, well-loved and vibrant part of the busy Seattle music scene. He continues to tour, teach and perform throughout the world. For an interesting and encompassing commentary on Hadley’s career, check out the complete liner notes on Gratitude. Here are a few excerpts: The pervasive influence of John Coltrane is noticeable in Hadley Caliman’s playing, but it’s tempered by the earlier West Coast bop experience and rounded into his own sound by the years of playing in a myriad of gigs of all description. West Coast tenorists like Dexter Gordon, Harold Land, Joe Henderson, Ernie Watts, and Hadley Caliman generally have a more rounded sound than their East Coast counterparts. It’s also true that one learns from teaching. Hadley was on the music faculty at the Cornish College of the Arts in Seattle for over 20 years and his influence can be heard in dozens of young saxophonists and others who studied with him. Since retiring from Cornish, he is again concentrating on his career as a performer. He regularly leads his own quartet/ quintet and is a featured soloist with the Seattle Repertory Jazz Orchestra. Jim Wilke, Jazz After Hours, PRI Jazz Northwest, KPLU Hadley was recently honored by the Earshot Jazz Festival with a concert at the Seattle Art Museum, has just completed a recording with an old time Yardbird Suite friend, Pete Christlieb, and will be debuting his new CD “Straight Ahead” when he appears at the club. when... Join Alberta born, awardwinning drummer Karl Schwonik as he visits Edmonton during his fifth tour of Canada as a band leader. The 2010 tour is in support of his upcoming recording Visions from the Farm. The members of the Karl Schwonik Quartet are some of the finest musicians in Western Canada. Chris Andrew has established himself as one of Canada’s most creative musicians. Calgary sax man Brent Mah is a rising talent, while Kodi Hutchinson is an Albertan stalwart and accomplished bassist. All three are prominent on the Alberta jazz scene. Education is a major component of Karl’s tours. In addition to club performances, the group is very excited to be giving over 20 clinics and workshops with aspiring musicians, ranging from elementary school to University level. from the simple life of the farm to the bustling metropolis of Montreal. Karl is the president of the Wetaskiwin Jazz Society in Wetaskiwin, Alberta, and Artistic Director of the Wetaskiwin Jazz Camp. He is also the Director of the Calgary Jazz Festival’s C-Jazz Camp. As well, Karl’s upcoming book “The Emerging Artist” is scheduled for release in late 2010. At the young age of 24, Karl has quickly established himself as one of Canada’s hardest working and most creative musicians. In 2009, Karl was featured nationally on CBC’s Canada Live program and as a part of the series on CBC Radio called NEXT: Canada’s Music Future. He also won the 2009 VSA Arts International Young Soloist Award, where the prize was a cash award and a performance at the Kennedy Center in Washington D.C. when... Visions from the Farm is generously supported by the Canada Council for the Arts and the Alberta Foundation for the Arts, and will be released on Chronograph Records in Calgary. According to Karl, the title of the recording is a play on words, combining his rural upbringing and his visual impairment. Each song is programmatic. On this night Jeff hits the stage as a melodic, rhythmic and inventive sax player, and as one of Canada’s leading R & B and soul artists. Jeff’s smooth vocal offerings often conjure up images of Philly soul rather than the Canadian prairies. His mature and dynamic stage presence has captured fans both domestically and internationally, and his other talents as a saxophonist and keyboard player have truly made him a unique musical entity. Popular with Chicago style step dancers across America, Hendrick is a favourite of syndicated ABC Radio Networks personality Michael Baisden and has been featured on his national broadcast several times since 2006. Hendrick’s sophmore album Soul Celebration has sold over 12,000 independent copies in the US, UK, Europe, and Japan. His singles Celebrate and Old School Party have entered the Billboard and Mediabase Urban Adult Charts regularly over the past two years. Over the years, Jeff has built a solid reputation as a soulful singer, solid songwriter and multiinstrumentalist. He has studied and performed jazz, soul, pop and classical music. Born in rural Alberta, Jeff’s musical studies eventually led him to McGill University in Montreal where he earned a Jazz Performance Degree. Afterwards, he returned to Edmonton and played for a time with the Latin funk band Maracujah! Later, Hendrick created his own band and gained a solid, local reputation playing soul and pop sets. In 1998, he was nominated for an Alberta Recording Industry Award in the Soul/ Rhythm and Blues category, and gained a strong 6 January/February 2010 following for his live performances throughout Canada. In 1999, he moved briefly moved to Los Angeles, where he worked with artists such as Brian McKnight and All 4 One before returning to Edmonton. His debut album, ‘Bout Time, was finally released in 2002 and received attention in both Canada and Europe. when... This will be a special night down at the Yardbird as innovators Peter Zak and Walt Weiskopf take over the Yardbird stage. Promise to take yourself and friend/s to hear these two outstanding New York-based musicians, alongside a hot Alberta rhythm section! Since 2005, Peter Zak has recorded four albums for the Danish jazz label, SteepleChase Records. In 2008, he released Seed of Sin, featuring bassist Paul Gill and drummer Quincy Davis. In 2007, he put out a solo album entitled My Conception. The 2006 release For Tomorrow featured Gill and drummer Willie Jones III. This was preceded by The Peter Zak Trio in 2005, an album which included Gill and drummer Al Foster. Peter is a faculty member in the renowned jazz program at New School University. During his time in New York, Peter has performed and/or recorded with Junior Cook, George Coleman, Jimmy Cobb, Billy Hart, Ryan Kisor, Etta Jones, Scott Hamilton, Al Foster, Eric Alexander, Curtis Stigers, Walt Weiskopf and Jon Hendricks, among many others. In 2005, Peter received a prestigious $10,000 grant from the Doris Duke Foundation and Chamber Music America to compose and perform a new work for his jazz trio, featuring Al Foster and Paul Gill. The first of two performances of this three-part suite took place at New York’s Smoke Jazz Club in June of 2005, and the second in January of 2006, at the Jazz Gallery in New York City. Peter leads is own groups at various venues in and around New York, as well as making national and international appearances as a leader, including recent gigs at the Copenhagen, Denmark, jazz festival and the Zacatecas jazz festival in Mexico. At the same time, he performs and records as a sideman with various other artists, including Jim Snidero, Ryan Kisor, www. yardbirdsuite.com 7 Walt Weiskopf, and others, both in the U.S and internationally. Peter grew up first in Ohio, then in Oakland, California, studying classical piano, then turning to jazz while in high school. Following graduation from U.C. Berkeley, Peter played clubs, concerts and festivals in the San Francisco Bay Area with such artists as Frank Morgan and John Handy. Saxophonist, composer and author Walt Weiskopf began his New York career performing with the Buddy Rich Big Band in 1981 at the age of 21. Since then, he has made an impressive mark as both a leader and sideman with 12 critically-acclaimed CDs and countless sideman credits, including performing and recording with Frank Sinatra, Steely Dan, Donald Fagen and Steve Smith’s Jazz Legacy. A dynamic player with enormous technical prowess, Walt is equally well-regarded as a composer and his CDs contain predominantly original work. His five books on advanced topics in improvisation are among the most respected in the field. He lives in New Jersey and is an Associate Professor at the Eastman School of Music. Walt was born in Augusta, Georgia and grew up outside Syracuse, New York. He took up his first instrument, the clarinet, at age 10 and began his saxophone studies four years later. After graduating from Rochester’s Eastman School of Music in three years, he moved to New York City in 1980. In 1983, Walt began a fourteen-year association with jazz pianist and arranger Toshiko Akiyoshi, making seven recordings and touring the United States, Japan and Europe several times with her orchestra. During this time, he began recording his own material. Whether for quartet, nonet, or any configuration in between, Walt’s compositions and arrangements have attracted fans and critical notice. Simplicity (Criss Cross Jazz-1993), Walt’s first CD as a leader, met with immediate success. It was number one on Eurojazz radio 8 January/February 2010 for four straight weeks and caused Mel Martin of Saxophone Journal to write: “Walt Weiskopf’s prime influence as a player appears to be John Coltrane, but he is no slavish imitator. He ... gets to musical matters in a powerful and positive way, asserting a definite viewpoint.... He displays much technical accomplishment, yet makes it sound basic and accessible.” Walt’s subsequent recordings, from A World Away in 1994 (Criss Cross Jazz) to the most recent Day In Night Out (Criss Cross Jazz - 2008), have also caused a critical stir. In the September 1997 issue of JazzTimes Bill Milkowski counted Walt among his “five most underrated players.” By 2000, Milkowski found that Walt had fulfilled his early promise, and called him “... a major talent ... a monster tenor saxophonist as well as a prolific composer and accomplished arranger.” Pianist Bill Cunliffe, winner of the International Thelonious Monk competition, said simply, “Walt Weiskopf is one of the great composers of modern jazz....” (L.A. Jazz Scene, 1997). Zan Stewart called him “a consummate saxophonist, composer and arranger” (Downbeat, 2003). Chris Hovan proclaimed Walt to be “easily one of the most mature and fully individualistic saxophonists and composers to come along in the last 10 years” (All About Jazz, 2002). when... David has released three albums of original compositions, including David Occhipinti (1997), Syzygy (1999), and Intersection (2003). With sax man Mike Murley, David recorded Duologue (2002), and Duologue Vol. 2 (2005). Duologue (2002) was nominated for a Juno, a National Jazz Award and a Canadian Music “Indie” award. Occhipinti is currently a faculty member at Humber College, and also teaches at the University of Toronto. In the early 1990’s David spent most of his time between studying in New York and performing in Italy. The Canada Council for the Arts funded his stays in New York where he studied privately with legendary guitarist Jim Hall. In 1994, David moved to Italy for nearly two years and performed extensively throughout the country and in neighbouring countries with his own groups and as a sideman. In 1996 David returned to his native Canada and was chosen as one of ten winners in the “Guitars on Fire” contest held by the international trade publication Jazziz magazine. Be sure to invite your loved one/s and take in a wonderful evening with one of Norway’s most extraordinary artists, pianist/composer Håvard Wiik. This night’s show will feature Havard’s acclaimed new trio, including Hakon Mjaset Johansen drums and Ole Morten Vågan on bass. Together, they represent a fresh take on the classic piano trio format. The group’s CD The Arcades Project (Jazzland) finds Havard in fine form as composer, pianist and bandleader. Havard first came to the attention of Canadian audiences several years ago, particularly because of performances with the powerhouse Scandinavian quintet, Atomic, at the Vancouver International Jazz Festival. Havard’s sensitive, lyrical playing and his ability to traverse mainstream traditions while plying more open approaches was a hit with audiences. Besides Atomic, Wiik also works with Free Fall (Ken Vandermark, Ingebrigt Haker Flaten), Atomic Schooldays, a duo with Hakon Kornstad, and a new project with Axel Dorner and Fredrik Ljungqvist. He has also collaborated with jazz giants Joe Lovano, Kenny Wheeler and Lee Konitz. when... Both shows feature Sandro in the solid company of Chris Tarry on bass and Rez Abbasi on guitar. Wow! The Alvo Sessions is Sandro’s latest recording project, which took place in New York City in September, 2009. Sandro suggests the album “stays true to the spirit of jazz” but goes further afield. The recording features the Indian-inspired guitar playing of Rez Abbasi, the positively electric bass sounds of Chris Tarry, and the thick, innovative grooves of Sandro Dominelli; these three “voices” all come together to create an unprecedented sound. This is an exciting new project that brings jazz aficionados and new listeners alike together in the appreciation of great music. Both nights will feature music from The Alvo Sessions, including Sandro’s interpretations of Chris Issak’s Wicked Games and Keith Jarret’s Personal Mountains, along with many of his own original compositions. Sandro is one of Canada`s most creative, talented and tasteful drummers. He is a successful and established luminary on the Canadian music scene and continues to be a much sought-after as a composer, bandleader, sideman and producer. www. yardbirdsuite.com 11 Sandro’s musical sensibilities have caught the attention of international, national and local jazz icons alike, who have been inspired to perform or record with his influence. His collaborations include a “who’s who” of jazz greats, including Joe Lovano, Sheila Jordan, Ernie Watts, Pete Christleib, Doug Riley, Oliver Jones, Guido Basso, Hugh Fraser, PJ Perry and Tommy Banks. Additionally, he’s performed and recorded with such modern contemporary luminaries as Ben Monder, Chris Tarry, Kenny Werner and Ralph Bowen. As a composer, Sandro hit the scene in 2003 and since then has received rave reviews and accolades for his work. His first recording as band leader, Café Varze Jazz, was named Outstanding Jazz Recording of the Year at the Western Canadian Music Awards and was also nominated in 2004 for a JUNO as Best Traditional Jazz Album. Sandro’s follow-up album, Meet Me in the Alley, brought him more success, including a Canadian Music Week award for Favorite Jazz Artist of the Year. when... Studying under Galaxie Rising Star award winner Chris Andrew, as well as attending the Music Performance program through Grant MacEwan College, James’ education is immense and comes through in his mature style of playing. Most recently entering the studio with Juno nominee, Sandro Dominelli, this emerging talent completed his debut recording and is preparing for its 2010 release. Channeling energy and passion into his music, James is an exciting addition to the Edmonton jazz community. Canadian Jazz Series Drumheller For Alberta audiences, it’s weird to hear a band named Drumheller introduced as being from Toronto, but jazz fans know that stranger things have happened in the world of jazz! Drumheller (the band) does not “sound” like your average Alberta town (as in Drumheller, Alberta, for those who don’t know where it is!). This unique quintet of composers/performers draws from the entire tradition of jazz music (from traditional to avant-garde) and also from each band member’s diverse experiences in free improvisation, folk, notated music, punk and groove music. This band speaks for itself, as suggested on their website: “We embrace collective and solo improvisation strategies, with compositions that range from short sketches used as jumping off points for free improvisation to through-composed pieces. As a collective of individual composers, we strive to address the requirements of each composition, while creating a unified vision of what Drumheller’s music is.” Enough said. This Friday night concert will challenge and entertain. when... Crystal Magnets, the piano duo from two masters of contemporary improvisation, reunites Canadian Andy Milne and Frenchman Benoît Delbecq. These two creative masters became friends in 1990 while studying with saxophonist Steve Coleman at The Banff Centre Jazz Workshop. Both took Coleman’s teachings to heart, exploring distinctly different approaches to expressing their experiences through music. Subsequently, in 2007, they received The FrenchAmerica Jazz Exchange and were commissioned by Chamber Music America to develop and record Where is Pannonica? (Songlines, 2009). They returned to The Banff Centre in January 2008 to undertake this project. The scope of the project grew to include extensive collaboration with Banff Centre audio engineers throughout the compositional, recording and mixing phases. Using the sonic landscape of the 5.0 surround sound format for inspiration, the music was composed in part to exploit the unique potential for placing specific compositional elements in distinct regions of the mix. The engineers created an acoustic array within each piano and analyzed the natural acoustics to define a larger array within the room, Andy and Benoit to compose for the medium and perform in harmony with their environment. The New York Times lauded the recording as a “strangely beautiful new album” from two “resourcefully contemporary pianists, both drawn to quixotic interrogations of harmony and timbre.” As an innovator in improvised, prepared-piano performance, Benoit has synthesized sounds 14 January/February 2010 and concepts from Ligeti and Steve Lacy to Aka Pygmy music. Andy’s long association with Steve Coleman inspired his unique integration of rhythmic concepts from Cuba, Ghana, American jazz, funk and hip-hop. Although both artists have created music for electronic and computer-based instruments, Crystal Magnets is primarily an acoustic piano duo, equally influenced by both pianists’ ever-expanding experiences and passions. when...
