Stunning final frame gives PBA Hall of Famer his 34th career major, $80,000 top prize

N.J. (Feb. 27, 2011) – Norm
Duke of Clermont, Fla., won
his 34th Professional Bowlers
Tour title and seventh career
major in the 68th Lumber Liquidators U.S. Open at Brunswick Zone-Carolier Sunday
with a stunning 225-216 victory over Mika Koivuniemi of
Hartland, Mich., when Koivuniemi missed a 10 pin spare in
the 10th frame.
Duke, the tournament’s
top qualifier, closed his game
with four consecutive strikes,
to force Koivuniemi to mark in
the 10th, but the Finnish native,
one of the best spare-shooters
in professional bowling, uncharacteristically missed the
single-pin spare attempt.
With his victory, Duke
earned $80,000 and moved
into a tie for fourth place on
the Lumber Liquidators PBA
Tour’s list of all-time titlewinners with fellow PBA Hall
of Famer Mark Roth.
“You’d like to say to yourself I just won the U.S. Open,
and maybe I’ll grow into that,
but right this minute, I feel
like Mika lost the U.S. Open,”
Duke said. “But I’m sitting
here, holding the trophy. I had
conceded the match. I knew the
last four strikes were important, because you never know
what’ll happen. But missing
the 10 pin is like having your
ace pitcher on the mound and
he throws four straight balls,
and you lose.”
Duke knew exactly how
Koivuniemi felt on his spare
attempt because in 2008, when
Duke won his first U.S. Open
title to complete the PBA Triple Crown and Grand Slam,
he had to convert the 2-4-5-8
“bucket” in the 10th frame to
win.
“I couldn’t feel my legs
on the approach on that shot,”
Duke said. “That’s what happens under pressure. That’s
why guys miss three-foot
putts. And it’s fatigue. I’m exhausted. If I had to make a 10
pin to win, it would be suspect
at best.
“It’s not like I didn’t deserve to win,” Duke added.
“I was the top qualifier. I did
throw four strikes in a row,

Koivuniemi, the No. 3
qualifier for the U.S. Open
stepladder finals, eliminated
Ryan Shafer of Horseheads,
N.Y., 236-222, in Sunday’s
first match. The key shot in
that match was a pocket 7-10
split by Shafer in the eighth
frame, following a double that
ended his hopes for his first
major title in a record 12 appearances in major championship television finals.
Koivuniemi, the only
player in PBA history to reach
the television finals in all four
PBA major championships in a
single year, eliminated Tommy
Jones of Simpsonville, S.C., in
the semifinal match, 241-158.
Jones left splits and failed to
convert in the fourth, sixth and
eighth frames.
“Duke is one of the greatest
players ever. I knew it was going to be a tough match,” Koivuniemi said. “I took the biggest shot of my life in the 10th
frame and left the 10 pin, but
unfortunately I didn’t make
my spare. It was my nerves, I

elite youth bowlers in the nation competing for national
titles and spots on Junior Team
USA. The tournament awarded $125,000 in scholarships to

LAKE ELSINORE—It took tenacity and lot of coming from behind by striking out with like 9,
8. 6 and 5 strikes in rows in match games for Bob Jones to win his 2nd SN-CDBA Deaf Eliminations title last Feb. 19-20 weekend. Previously the Simi Valley lefthander had won his first in 2006
at Las Vegas and he also was the runner-up in 2004 at Las Vegas.
Southern Nevada-California Deaf Bowling Association held its prestigious 27th annual Deaf
Eliminations as part of its regular team, doubles and singles tournament at Trevi Zones Lanes in
Lake Elsinore. The event, which drew 37 male and 11 brave female entrants, started with 4 games
qualifying round on Saturday afternoon. Smooth stroking Jones led all bowlers with scratch games
of 215, 243, 278 and 216 for 952. But he was beaten by 5 pins for the high handicap qualifier honors
by John Buhay, San Diego who rolled 221-247-258-292 for 915 plus 144 hdcp for 1059 to Jones’
952 with 102 hdcp 1054.
The eventual runner-up James McDonald, Las Vegas with 296 handicap for his 144 entering
average rolled 190-214-171-142/ 717 for 1013 total to place 3rd. Valarie Henderson a 139 average
right-hander who came down from Castro Valley placed 4th for the match plays with 1007 from
155-215-141-195 for 703 plus 304 handicap. The top tied 31/32 cut-off score for 1st round 3 games
match play was 849 tied by 1987 champion Gorman Low, Huntington Beach and Kathy Seymour,
Whittier, winner of PCDWBA Senior Queens and DSBA Senior Queens trying to make her 3rd
title in a year.
On Sunday afternoon after completion of the first round 3 games matches, BIG brawny McDonald grabbed lead with 1851 total from his way over his average scratch 556 series (sorry, no games
scores) plus 192 handicap 748 total winning all his 3 matches for extra 90 bonus pins. Former 2005
champion Francisco Navarro, Fontana who qualified 5th with 995 total, also won his 3 matches
scored 1809 total to move 2nd. Navarro had scratch 640 plus 84 handicap 724 plus 90 bonus.
Losing one of his matches, Jones fell to third with scratch 606 plus 75 handicap 683 plus 60
bonus 1797 total. A 1993 runner-up looking for his first title Mark Fisser, Aliso Viejo who qualified
8th with 917, shot this round’s high scratch 689 plus low 33 handicap for 722 plus 75 bonus 1714
total to jump to 4th. Also losing one of her matches Henderson fell to 5th with 1705 total.
Qualifying leader Buhay bowled poorly with 444 series, winning only one match for 1641 total
pins with bonus dropping him down to 10th. The field was cut in half to top 16 bowlers for another
round of 3 games match play with 2008 champion Rudy A. Martinez, Phoenix in 16th with 1596
total.
At end of this round of 3 games matches, Big lefty McDonald took the top seed for the championship finals. Although losing one of his matches, Big Mac again rolled way over his average 576
set plus 192 handicap 748 plus 60 bonus 828 for a new record 2679 total. The old 10 games record
was 2633 in 2007 by Carl Malucci.
Albeit losing two matches, Jones scored well with a 643 set plus handicap and bonus for 2nd
seed 2545 total. Navarro also lost two but finished with 2478 total for 3rd seeded position. The lady
Henderson also lost two but totaled 2440 to move up to 4th seed. Fisser lost two too but his round’s
high 656 helped him to 2433 total good for 5th seed. Philip Smith Jr. of Castro Valley took sixth
and last seed for the championship match plays with 2403 total. Qualified 7th with 919, Smith Jr.
dropped to 8th with 1646 in 1st round and sot 577 with winning two matches helped move him up
to 6th.
The quarterfinals for the championship had #6 Smith, Jr. against #3 Navarro and #5 Fisser
against #4 Henderson. Smith, Jr. had 3 splits and two opens for 124 while Navarro won with one
split in his 181, final scores with handicap Navarro 209 Smith, Jr. 164. Fisser was hurt with two
wide splits and his 7 strikes in between could not catch up with Henderson with her 65 handicap
advantage. She tried to stay clean with 7 spares, a strike and two splits too and won with her final
score 234 to Fisser’s 216.
The semi finals had winner Navarro against #1 McDonald and winner Henderson against #2
Jones. Big Mac with 36 handicap advantage jumped with 3 strikes and a miss while Navarro was
hurt with two opens, a spare and tried to catch up with a 4 baggers. But Big Mac kept ahead with
spare, strike, spare, strike, open, spare and strike for 183 while the best Navarro could finish was
with 3 spares for 183. Big Mac won with 247 - Navarro 211.
Like Fisser-Henderson match, Jones-Henderson was a classic with Jones giving Henderson 51
pins advantage and being able to come from behind. After double and a split and miss, Jones ran 5
strikes in row but Henderson was not fazed, she doubled and 9 in tenth, forcing Jones to mark in his
tenth. Calmly Jones struck out to win 265 to 245.
So the winners McDonald and Jones met in the championship finals with Jones giving McDonald 39 pins advantage. Big Mac went ahead with spare, strike, spare and Jones fell behind with
spare, miss, a 4 baggers but missed again in 7th. Big Mac went ahead but misses in 5th and 8th hurt
him. Jones struck out 5 in row for 224 to shut Big Mac out. McDonald finished with 155 and Jones
won with 249 - McDonald 219.
Jones will get $600 for his 2nd title and McDonald $300 for his runner-up finish. Henderson
and Navarro each gets $230, Fisser $200 for 5th and Smith, Jr. $180 for 6th. At 1-5 prize ratio the
prize money goes to 10 places.

CERRITOS—So. Calif. Deaf Traveling League had a poor day at AMF Cerritos Lanes with Ed
Abakumoff leading a small 4 honor roll list of 4 bowlers when he closed with a 225 for 758. Pablo
Yoma also ended with a 227 for his 738 and Bob Jones who hit 278/758 in his Wednesday league
and another 700 in his Thursday league at Canoga Park, started poorly but finished with a pair of
204s for 708. Gorman Low had a 703.
Jones’ S.F. Valley beat Mid City 14-6 to extend its league lead to 8 games over Low’s L A City
which tied Yoma’s Lake Elsinore 10-10. Chino beat Abakumoff’s Riverside 13-7 with Abakumoff
not getting help from teammates with his 4 of the team’s 7 points.
The league thanks AMF Cerritos management for taking in the league on short notice. The
league bowls again on March 6 at AMF Bowling Square in Arcadia at 1 PM.
SUMMER MINI-ELIMINATOR
HAS A NEW VEGAS HOME
Las Vegas—Pinacle Events, Inc., owners of the world famous Mini-Eliminators announced
it was moving the summer megabuck tournament to the Strike Zone Bowling Center located inside
Sunset Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas. Dates for the Summer Mini-Eliminator are Sunday, June 26th
through Saturday, July 2nd.
“We are very excited to be bringing the Summer Mini-Eliminator to Strike Zone.” With 72 lanes
we now are able to offer lower entry fees since we can now handle more bowlers. Jim Welch, Director of Bowling at Strike Zone, is thrilled to be hosting the Mini-Eliminator. “We are going to do
everything we can to make all of the participants enjoy their time at Sunset Station.”
Strike Zone will be hosting Mini-Eliminator squads day and night including several sweepers.
In addition, the hotel is going to offer special room rates and the casino will be running special
events. Even the pro shop is getting involved in the festivities as drilling specials and ball discounts
will be offered.
The Summer Mini-Eliminator brochure will be released shortly and will detail a revised format
for the tournament. There will be 4 divisions, including two handicap divisions, and bowlers will

will be at Southpoint Bowling Lanes in Las Vegas, Nv next
weekend, March 12-13, 2011. The bowlers will bowl 10 straight
team games in the qualifying rounds, starting, Saturday, March
12th at 10:00AM. Check In Time: 9:15AM, Practice, starts at
9:50AM. $2000.00 will be the 1st Place Team Prize, with one
team cash place paid for every 3 teams entered. $370.00 is the
team’s entry fee. Extra Money Action: Optional Team & Individual Age Division, High Game & Series Side-Pots and Brackets., and an optional separate divisional 10 game series side pot,
at an additional $50.00 entry fee, that will pay one cash place for

RIVERSIDE — The list
of Citrus Belt Fathers and
Sons who have bowled perfect
games continues to grow. I
was contacted last Monday &
advised that Chuck Dawson
and his son TY bowled 300s in
1980 at Town Square Lanes.
Both Dawson’s rolled their
perfectos in the same league,
but not on the same team. As
far as I know, the 1980 date
made them the first father and
son combo to bowl 300s in
Citrus Belt history.
Since 1980, TY DAWSON has done big things in
the bowling universe. He led
the Citrus Belt in high average
in the 1980’s. Then came the
PBA, several regional titles,
and many other tourney titles.
I saw Ty Dawson bowl in
the USBC Masters, in Reno,
a few years ago. He is very
smooth, silky smooth. He is a
bowler in the mold of DAVID
OZIO: accurate, stylish, and
smart.

Cal Bowl Open Results
LAKEWOOD—We had a great turnout for the Cal bowl Open Saturday. 76 of the
finest scratch bowlers from California, Arizona, Mexico and Nevada showed up. there
were some high scores and there were some low scores. The exciting part of the tournament came on game 10. Pino’s Pizza and Tutti Frutti put up an additional $300 in side pot
money for this game. Chris Michaels of Cal Bowl and Pino’s Pizza put up a challenge for
anyone to shoot a 300 game on game 10 would win an a bonus of $500. We had 4 bowlers
with the front 5. Andre Rounds was the only bowler who kept the string going and put all
12 shots in the pocket to get the perfecto and win $700 just for the last game alone.

ABTA Returns to Bowling Square This Weekend
3-6-9 is $1,500 at Bowling Square
WESTMINSTER—In our
return to Westminster, we had
a decent turnout of 180 entries
this week. Cut scores were a
+69 for the men and +57 for
the women. The Super Seniors
added to the board (2 men and
1 woman) were Vic Garcia
(+67), Howard Smith (+64)
and Janine Ditch (+26) for the
women. That would give us 46
bowlers making it to the semifinals this week.
For all qualifying squads
our top qualifier for the Men
was Chris Kelly with a +177,
and for the women it was Jessica Diso with a +119. Each
will get a paid entry into a future regular ABTA event. Each
week our top seed overall
draws the Match Series, and
this week it was worth $582.
The top seed drew a 584 and
we had no bowler match that
score, so it would be carried
over to next week.
This coming week at Bowling Square we will estimate
the Match Series at $890. For
the 3-6-9 qualifying this week,
we had Som Seng outlasting the field of qualifiers. He
missed on the 4th shot and received a $50 consolation. We
will add another $100 at Bowling Square giving us a total of
$1,500.
In the optional doubles
finishing in 1st was Dom La
Guardia and Danny Eguilos with a 1492 for $190. In
second place, was Dom La
Guardia and Jeff Taino with
1466 for $170. We had a total
of $1,780 paid out in doubles
with low to cash of 1371.
In the semis this week we
saw Richard Samson bowl a
big second and third game to
capture the lead with a +146 to

sit out and bowl for the title.
In second place we saw Jason
Jones finish with a +111 to sit
out the first round and come in
during the 2nd round. It took a
+43 for the men and women to
make the top 16.
This week, our top seed in
semi-finals had the honor of
drawing the match game worth
$3,500. We already
have
started a back up pot and it is
at $900. Richard drew a 235.
After a review of all the scores
bowled, Stephen Durham was
the only bowler that Matched
that score and he happily took
home $3,500. He is welldeserving! We will estimate
the pot to be $2,500 at Bowling Square. This week we had
four new bowlers join us. Let
us welcome these new bowlers
to the club, Richard Beajkovic,
James Iriye, Rhiannon White,
and Chris Kataoka.
This would bring us to our
Match Play finals. In the first
round the seven losers were
Bryan Moore, John Armenia,
J. J. Soon, Joshua Navarro,
Julie Nguyen, Kelly Wynn,
and Ngheim Tran. They would
receive checks of $100 each.
In the second round, the losers
were Greg Reed, David Godinez, Faye Josafat, and Danny
Eguilos. Each would get
checks of $105. This would get
us down to the final four bowlers. At this point, our horses
would be paying anywhere
from a low of $25 (Jason
Jones) to a high of $152 (Andrew Toro) depending on who
would win. In this round we
saw Jessica Diso (10th seed)
bowling Joenito Soon (15th
seed). In this match, Joenito
got hot, and would get the better of Jessica with a 261 to 229
finish. In the other match we
saw Jason Jones (2nd seed)
bowling Andrew Toro (13th
seed). In this match, Jason
would get the better of Andrew with a 224 to 200 finish.
Jessica and Andrew finished
in 4th and 5th getting checks
for $110 each. Our semi-final
match was set to be bowled
on 35 and 36. We had our 2nd
and 15th seeds into the top
16 bowling each other. In our
horses this week we would see
Jason paying $25 and Joenito
paying $126 if they win their
match. In this match, both men
would start out strong, with Jason being the first to open in
the 4th frame and that would
give Joenito a lead of 18 pins
at that time. But Joenito would
open the door by having back
to back splits in the 6th and
7th frames, while Jason would
have a turkey during the same
period and put Jason in front
by 26 pins. That would be
enough as he would finish with
a 211/254 to 191/231 and send
him onto the title match. That
would give Jason the victory
and for those lucky “investors” that had Jason as a horse,
he paid $25. Joenito finished
3rd, his best to date, and received $200.
The title game was set and
bowled on lanes 37 and 38
this week. Richard being the
top seed elected to have Jason
begin the match first. Both
bowlers would start out with
opens, and this would not be
the only ones. This would be
a match to see who could get
the better count, as each bowler would get only 6 marks. It
would prove to be Jason that
could get the better counts as
he would finish with a 152/195

Anderson strikes the gavel many times on President’s
Day with a second high league series of 763! Approved by
Matt Mosley. On Monday 2/21/11, 63 yr. old Steve Anderson, who bowls once a week and carries a 201 average,
started out with an “oh so close” 278 game with 10 strikes,
then the 2nd game he missed a ten pin in the 1st frame,
his only open for the night, then strung 7 strikes, then had
two spares and ended up with a 246. He finished the 3rd
game with a spare, strike, spare, strike, spare, spare and
then six strikes in a row for a 239 game and 763 series,
which was his 2nd highest sanctioned series in his bowling life. Needless to say, his team Reno’s Five, won all 4
games that night.
He was rolling an Ebonite Total NV, a 4 yr. old ball, that
Frank Bellinder had drilled for him out of his former Pro
Shop inside Saddleback Lanes, Mission Viejo. He wishes
his new son-in-law, Drew Parkin and his daughter, Missy,
well in taking over his pro shop business there.
He owes his interest in bowling to his dad, Norm, also
known as the “Silver Fox”, who first taught him to bowl, who
is now 91 yrs. old and still bowls with him in league. He has
fun bowling with other family members in the league such
as his brother, Gary & his wife Kathy, his niece Jaclyn, his
2nd cousin Tim and his nephew Rick. His other nephew,
Rob, had to drop out of bowling since his wife had twin
baby boys on 2/3/11. His oldest son Brian wasn’t able to
bowl this year due to buying and fixing up a home in Long
Beach. Steve would like to dedicate his good scoring to his
fellow bowling enthusiast, Mike Toledo, who lost his job last
year due to budget cuts and also to Rick Medina, who lost
his wife to cancer last year.

LAKE FOREST—If the bowlers in the FRIDAY VEGAS
LEAGUE get as lucky in Las Vegas as they are at Forest
Lanes, Vegas may have to close up. Well, a little laugh
never hurt anyone.
Ray Rubio laughed all night this week when he shot a
277 game and a whopping 759 Series. Then Robert Villa
did a lot of snickering himself, when he shot a 259 game
and a terrific 721 series. Then along came Rick Lange
close to the 700 mark with 692 and Jim Barnes, 258/ 658
series. Other bowlers “feeling lucky” were Edward Dante
with a respectable 648, and Jim Smith rolled the dice for
a 246 game. Two of the ladies who showed off a bit, were
Anita Kleiman with 535 and Sheri Glass shot 503. Weekly
high games in the LOS AMIGOS were 226 shot by Per
Montensen, 225 by Larry Johnson and for the gals it was
Helen Whelan with a 206. High weekly series was Tom
Imler for the guys with 609 and for the gals it was Carol
Cooley with 500. Congratulations to Dan Moreno for a big
268 game for a 716 series in the SVUSD 2011 LEAGUE,
Howard Stephens 269 game and a 643 series followed by
Stephen Robitailie with a nice 625 series.
Our DUTCH WELLS SENIOR SCRATCH LEAGUE,
Saw Don Capobianco scoring a nice 623 series, followed
by Chuck Conrad’s 604. The only lady over 500 this week
was Eloise Boortz with 507. In the SUNDAY PRACTICE
teen ager, Tylar Patchen shot a nice 224 game and Matt
Martinez shot the league high series with a 246 game and
615 series.
THE BUSINESS NETWORK LEAGUE ENDED THIS
WEEK AND WILL START AGAIN NEXT TUESDAY.
Congratulations to MV TRANSPORTATION for taking
first place, team members are Chris Tiboni, Carol Mieszerski, Fred Fouts and Sam Cummings. Fred Fouts is the newest member of the team and was quite an asset when he
shot a 279 game and a 736 scratch series. Second Place,
YOUR NETWORKING GROUP, ended up only one game
out of first, and BEST COM COMUNICATIONS was only
one game behind them. Two members “shot season highs”
with Gary Armstrong’s 280 game and 758 series along with
Chuck Le Vasseur’s 251 and 704.
For the ladies Erin Aaberg scored ladies high scratch
series by shooting 592 and Kathryn Martin held second
high scratch game of 189 with team mate Lauran McClure

In the Saturday Linbrook Juniors, we had some fantastic
scores to report. Let’s start with the gals. Valerie Matsumoto
started out slow with 162 but came back awesome with 255256 for a super 673 series. Jessica Quental started out with 2
clean games for fantastic scores of 228-216 for an incredible
613 series. The guys had some great scores of their own to
report. Josh Cruz crushed 211-227-183/621, Chris Gushue

LAKEWOOD—Victor Jordan won the Amateur Bowlers Tour (ABT) championship at Cal
Bowl on Sunday, February 27, 2011 during our 3-game Beat-the-Board tournament. Victor bowled
in the 11AM squad and shot games of 266, 229 and 271 with handicap for a series total of 766 and
the $275 1st place prize. Fred Ringor came in second shooting a 753 with handicap. Low to cash
was +81.
Our newest championship, Victor Jordan, is married to Joan and they live in Huntington Beach.
Victor was using Storm equipment drilled by Ben Mach for the win this weekend. Victor sports
a high game of 290 and a high series of 670. Victor wanted to thank Joan for her love and support. Victor also wanted to thank Ben Mach for taking care of his equipment. Victor also wanted
to thank Cal Bowl for hosting the tournament and the ABT directors for running an outstanding
tournament.
The winner of the Senior Sweeper was Fred Ringor. The winner of the 2-Game Sweeper was
Daryl Brandt.
The ABT Directors and membership would like to thank the management and staff at Cal Bowl
for hosting our tournament. Our next scheduled event is Sunday, March 6 at Linbrook Bowl. The
address is 201 S. Brookhurst Street in the city of Anaheim. Squads are at 10AM, 11:30 & 1PM.
Their phone number is 714 774-2253. First place will be $1000 with 60 tournament entries and
progressive entries. The entry fee for this event is $45. Gold members and all re-entries are $40.
The deadline is fast approaching for sending in your National entries. The tournament is being
held at Sam’s Town in Las Vegas March 29-April 2. The deadline is March 15. Applications are
available at all tournaments. First place in the Classic Division is $41,000 and $25,000 in the Masters. To be eligible for the full pot, you must have bowled in ten squads in your local branch since

FREEMONT—Brittany Hillman didn’t plan to bowl this
night – she plays softball for top ranked Ohlone College and had
just finished practice. BUT – the urge to bowl took over and
the 19-year old rushed to the bowl in her uniform including black
smears under her eyes. Her 22-year old brother Chris bowls
on the same team as well as their brother Brandon and cousin
Mandy.
It was the last game and both Chris and Brittany began to
strike at will. After five strikes Brittany said, “I really began to
get nervous and I wanted to avoid eye contact with anyone so I
started to sing – the song – “Go Girl.”
Strikes continued for both and Chris said, “It was just one
of those nights when everything was going great, I was loose
and the pins continued to fall.” He was not unaware of the fact
that he was pacing Brittany strike for strike and he said he was
thinking more about her than himself. Brittany said she just kept
moving around and tried to keep her head in the game. She also
kept singing “Go Girl.”
Brittany etched her name in the record books first and the
league went ballistic congratulating her on her first ever 300.
Chris was thrilled for her and now, he needed to strike out to
match the fete. He said, “I thought wow, I had better strike out
or I’ll never hear the end of it!” This would be his 17th perfect
game. The first ball didn’t come off of his hand too well but he
struck and two more followed. The league erupted again congratulating the two. Brother Brandon and cousin Mandy were
no slouches either, rolling 268 and 233 respectively giving the
team an 1101 game.
The thing they were not aware of was Chris and Brittany Hillman having tied a National Record of a brother and sister shooting 300 on the same team in the same game. Darren and Nicole
Downey, Springfield, Ill., were the first ones to accomplish the
fete on March 18, 2005. The high game nationally for a two
women – two men foursome is 1110 and Chris and Brittany’s
team is second with 1101.
Both of these accomplishments are records for the state of
California.

Women’s Bowling Exhibit A Visit With
Scheduled to Open June 2011 Old Friends
Is Always Fun
ARLINGTON—Plans are underway for 50 years of Women’s Pro Bowling Exhibit scheduled to open in June 2011 during
Bowl Expo.
This exhibit is long overdue. Women professional bowlers
have played a major role in promoting the game and richly deserve an exhibit that features their accomplishments.
The 50 years of Women’s Pro Bowling Exhibit will display
rare photographs and artifacts from the greatest bowlers of all
time, including moments that made a difference and the impact
on television.
It will remember the pioneers that made all that followed
possible and will celebrate the tremendous contributions of the
key people who created the organized tours.
The exhibit will honor the female legends by showcasing the
top bowlers from each decade including Hall of Fame members,
Bowlers of the Year, Bowlers of the Decade, and significant record holders.
The individuals most responsible for over-seeing this great
project are Chairman of the committee, Jim Goodwin, Fran Deken, John Sommer and none other than Joan Romeo, who, in my
opinion is the most successful, most energetic, and certainly the
most UNDERPAID promoter of events in all of bowling. Romeo leaves no stones unturned in her relentless effort to further
the growth of bowling, both in America, as well as other foreign
countries. Nonetheless, the aforementioned work closely with
Pat Cinello, Chairman of the Executive Board, Keith Hamilton
Vice Chair, and Kelli Briscoe, the new curator of the museum.
All are involved to some degree and all provide input.
Joan Romeo spearheaded the fundraising and promotion. She
is never shy in her presentations to any casino, bowling manufacturer, major corporation, or any bowling related business. More
often than not, she succeeds in selling her product.
Romeo is no neophyte in public relations or promotional undertakings. From 1985 to 1987, she was Director of Client Services for Pearlman Wohl Inc in Century City, a suburb of Los
Angeles. Pearlman Wohl’s clients included Air New Zealand ,
Lamps Plus, and Buick Motor Division.
From 1988 to 1995, Joan became Vice President of The Pearlman Group, Incorporated, a company that represented Chevrolet
Motor Division, Permanent Charities Committee of the Entertainment Industry, Sterling Vineyards, and Ticketmaster.
In 1995,she started her own company, concentrating principally in bowling related projects. Her clients include Master
Industries, Twelve Strike, CWBA, Corbin Bowl, USA Bowling,
and FIQ. She is currently President of the California Bowling
Writers, is a member of the Bowling Writers Association of
America Board of Directors, a member of BPAA International
Committee, and, as previously stated, a member of the International Bowling Museum and Hall of Fame committee for the new
exhibit, 50 Years of Women’s Pro Bowling.
Perhaps there is added incentive to Joan Romeo’s passion for
the aforementioned exhibit. She is the mother of Robin Romeo,
one of the greatest female bowlers in the history of the game.
Robin is an absolute cinch for a spot in the exhibit. Robin’s record includes17 National Professional titles, (including two majors) four WIBC titles, (two All-Events, one doubles, one team)
seven California State titles, two New York State titles and one
USBC All-Events. Additionally, Robin is in seven bowling Halls
of Fame, including the USBC Hall of Fame. Robin’s resume’
hardly requires her mother’s influence.

NORWALK — Last Sunday I
trekked to Oak Tree Lanes to root
for a few former teammates. (We
bowled at least 10 local, state and
national tournaments together.)
Charlene Gamble, Jo O’Dell and
Linda Johnson (all San Gabriel
officers at one time) still have the
spirit. Linda Johnson is once again
our California State President, so I
don’t get to see her often.
Linda and her current officers
were hosting the San Gabriel Valley Ass’n tournament, with men,
women and Juniors all bowling at
one time. What a sight! The sad
situation was the amount of participants. Four weekends for each
association (men, women, youth)
has shrunk to 6 squads total.
Speaking of old friends: I sat
next to Keith Kenworthy (Rollin
Donkee daddy) who was there
supporting his lady Bert Strain
(Donkee Tour mama). The three of
us met at Alhambra Valley Lanes
in 1973!
That was before the Donkee
Ball Carrier was a dream or the
Donkee Tour had a concept. Mr.
Kenworthy gave away so many
Rollin Donkees that a number of
struggling Bowling Associations
were able to survive by raffling
the bags!
The Donkee Tour was the
warmest, friendliest tournament
around — lit by the smile of Bert
Strain.
During our 3 hour “rooting for
the ladies” Keith relayed the following story to me.
“Back in December of 2010 I
spent 12 days in the hospital and
when they sent me home I still
needed to be checked on. So the
“doctor” came to our home and
gave me the once over. When he
started to leave, he said, ‘I can
see you are in good hands, it’s so
nice to have your daughter here to
take care of you!’ “I said Doc, this
is my friend of 40 years and she’s
85 years old.”
Bert, you are the greatest!

PBA Mark Roth Plastic Ball Championship Focuses on Player Skill
Rather Than Bowling Ball Technology PBA Tour Players will be put to
the test March 2-6 at AMF Thruway Lanes in Cheektowaga
CHEEKTOWAGA, N.Y. (Feb. 28, 2011) – With all the options that today’s high-tech bowling
balls offer professional bowlers, choosing the right equipment to complement the player’s ability
is often the key to success.
But when the Lumber Liquidators Professional Bowlers Association Tour returns to Cheektowaga, N.Y., for the third annual Mark Roth Plastic Ball Championship at AMF Thruway Lanes
March 2-6, any advantage that can be gained by choosing the right equipment will be thrown out
the window because all of the competitors will be required to use the same type of bowling ball.
The Mark Roth Plastic Ball Championship, which requires players to use identical “throwback”
polyester ball technology, is named in honor of the PBA Hall of Famer who dominated the so-called
plastic ball era, winning a PBA-record eight titles in 1978 followed by another seven-title season in
1979. Roth’s total of 34 PBA Tour titles ranks fourth on the all-time list of PBA champions behind
Walter Ray Williams Jr. (47), Earl Anthony (43) and Pete Weber (35).
The inaugural Plastic Ball Championship, held in Wheat Ridge, Colo., in 2009 was won by Jeff
Carter of Springfield, Ill. Last year’s event, the first held in Roth’s honor, was held in West Babylon,
N.Y., and was won by Brian Ziesig of Levittown, N.Y., who became the first amateur ever to win
a standard PBA Tour event.
The concept behind the plastic ball tournament is to put a premium on knowledge of changing lane conditions, subtle adjustments in hand positions and delivery techniques, and other skills
rather than relying on advanced bowling ball technology.
“It’s definitely a totally different mindset because you can’t rely on technology,” said Carter,
who won the 2009 Plastic Ball Championship by defeating Hall of Famer Pete Weber in the championship match, 235-213, for his first and only PBA Tour title. “The emphasis moves from a reliance on technology to mechanics and being able to repeat the shots the way you want to. The
adjustments you make are more subtle and have to come from your physical game.
“I started bowling in the plastic ball era and have experienced the evolution of technology and
I’m one of those who have been a proponent of new technology in the sport,” Carter continued. “So
winning that tournament was kind of a surprise for me because I really didn’t think I was going to
do that well. I actually thought about taking the week off.”
Ziesig, a sales representative for a bowling equipment distributor who bowls only occasional
Tour stops, feels that a tournament such as the Plastic Ball Championship levels the playing field
for players like himself who don’t compete regularly on Tour.
“If you want to be successful on Tour you really have to know your equipment and what it can
do for you under different conditions you’ll experience week-in and week-out,” Ziesig said. “With
two or three weeks practice using a plastic ball similar to what we’ll be using in the Plastic Ball
Championship, I can be as ready as the guys who bowl every week on Tour.
“If they’re going to beat me, it’s because they bowled better than me – not because they have
better equipment or better knowledge of all the equipment choices that are available.”
The Mark Roth Plastic Ball Championship also is giving the PBA an opportunity to support the
sport’s official charities. A series of plastic balls have been produced as a special fund-raising event,
support Bowlers to Veterans Link (BVL), Bowl for the Cure (benefitting Komen for the Cure’s
battle against breast cancer), the International Bowling Museum and Hall of Fame, the new YES
Fund youth bowling initiative, and other charities supported by The Bowling Foundation. All of
the individual balls are available to the public through OnTheBallBowling.com or by visiting pba.
com. The official tournament ball – which also is available – features logos of all of the participating charities.
The tournament itself will get underway on March 2 with a seven-game Tour Qualifying Round
where non-exempt players will compete for a minimum of 10 spots in the 64-player field. The 64player field will bowl 14 qualifying games on March 3 with the top 32 advancing to round-robin
match play on March 4. After a nine-game morning round, the top 16 will bowl another nine games
in the evening to determine the top four for the live ESPN stepladder finals at 1 p.m. Eastern on
Sunday, March 6.
