I’d like to thank you all for supporting not only the arts and culture in Southern Alberta, but the wonderful people who work so hard to make this event a success every year. If culture is the heart of a community, then Lethbridge is a healthy city indeed. We are very fortunate to be the home of an incredibly talented, diverse and dedicated arts community that would be the envy of a city twice our size. The Art Auction is a chance for the rest of us to show our support for that community and to enjoy the fruits of their labour. Joanne and I have attended the Auction many times and we always find a piece that adds to the beauty of our home. I hope you enjoy yourself tonight and I encourage you to take advantage of this opportunity to enrich your life with some beautiful artwork by local artists. By doing so, you’re also contributing to the culture that helps make Lethbridge such a wonderful place to live. Sincerely, Greg Weadick, MLA Lethbridge West Constituency 402-8 Street South, Lethbridge, AB T1J 2J7 Tel: (403) 329-4644 Fax: (403) 329-4289 [email protected] www.assembly.ab.ca IMPACT OF THE ART AUCTION As the gallery’s longest running fundraising event, the Art Auction has had a significant impact on our programming and has helped us connect with diverse audiences throughout the years, whether it be: • Three-year olds participating in Tender Fingers and being exposed to art for the first time • Retirees reconnecting with their passion for the arts • Emerging contemporary artists whose careers are nurtured here • Our community at large that has been exposed to the leading artists and work of our time • Volunteers who are able to gain professional experience while furthering their appreciation for art and engaging in our local arts community • Private collectors who have acquired contemporary artworks not otherwise available in our small prairie city • Sponsors and donors who find value in partnering with SAAG to support the arts in our community • The inquisitive souls – those people of all ages who value meaningful experiences, those who want to engage rather than consume, think critically and explore new ideas… The Southern Alberta Art Gallery Art Gallery is enriching – we provide experiences that enhance the quality of lives. 6 AUC T I O N GENERAL RULES • Payment may be made by cash, cheque, Interac, Visa, MasterCard, or American Express with the auction cashiers. • Payment in full is mandatory. • All sales are final. In this seven-part series, Dr. Leslie Dawn will “pursue the postmodern,” by delving into movements such as Pop Art, Minimalism, Conceptualism, Performance Art, New Image Painting, Neo-Expressionism, Feminist Art influences and more. By the beginning of the ‘60s a shift was taking place - one where the pursuit of universal truth, as described through the grand narratives of Modernist art movements, begins to decay. The move towards Postmodernism reflected an embrace of pluralism, diversity, parody and irony in an effort to reconcile a fundamental questioning of what constitutes reality. Along the way we’ll visit Andy Warhol, Robert Rauschenberg, Cindy Sherman, Jasper Johns and other seminal figures who have had a hand in shaping art as we know it today. This course is designed to provide a critical framework for viewing, discussing and becoming engaged with visual art while giving you a foundation for approaching the fundamental shifts that occurred in the art world from the 1960s onward. Lethbridge, Alberta P: 403-380-5700 | F: 403-380-5760 21st ANNUAL ART AUCTION : DONATIONS MADE SIMPLE : FROM KPMG LLP DONATIONS MADE SIMPLE The Southern Alberta Art Gallery is a registered charity and the support of the Lethbridge community through donations plays an important role in ensuring that it continues to grow and thrive. The purchase of an auction item is not considered to be a charitable donation for tax purposes. However, the Southern Alberta Art Gallery can provide tax deductible receipts for any donation of cash or certain valuable items, such as art. Canada’s tax system provides generous incentives to encourage Canadians to donate to registered charities. Charitable donations entitle you to a two-tier credit. The first $200 of donations for the year (total to all charities) gives you a 25% tax credit, when provincial tax is taken into account. All donations above $200 give you a 50% tax credit, when provincial tax is factored in. The maximum amount of donations you can claim in a year is 75% of your net income. To the extent you have receipts for more than this amount, or if you choose not to claim a donation for any other reason, you can keep the receipts and claim the credit in any of the following five years. KPMG LLP is actively involved in supporting the Southern Alberta Art Gallery and many other organizations in the Lethbridge community. Should you have any questions regarding donations tax credits and their impact on your personal situation please do not hesitate to contact us.
