Message
from our
President
It is hard to believe that a year has passed since our record breaking production of Oliver! at the Grand
Theatre, followed by Mel Brooks’s The Producers at the Playhouse in May, which was widely acclaimed
by audiences and the press.
But time does fly when you are enjoying yourself, and now we return to the Grand Theatre & Opera
House in Leeds with our presentation of the hugely popular The King And I. LAOS have never produced
this wonderful musical before, and we hope that you enjoy watching it as much as we are enjoying
performing it for you.
At LAOS we are well aware of the current financial situation in the country, and within the last twelve
months were sorry to see the closure of the Leeds-based costumiers W A Homburg Ltd. This company
supplied costumes for our productions for almost one hundred years, and our thanks go to the Dakeyne
family for their support throughout this time. As a result, we are fortunate to have developed a new
relationship with the costumiers Molly Limpet’s of Sheffield, one which we hope will last for many years
to come. Despite the economic climate, we at LAOS are determined to continue with two productions
per year, and with prudent housekeeping, good leadership, and of course with your help, we hope we can
achieve many more successful years at the city’s two Grade I theatres.
LAOS is committed to working for charities and over the years has supported several, including the
RNLI and more recently the NSPCC. This year, our chosen charity is St Gemma’s Hospice in Leeds. I
am sure you will agree this is an extremely worthy cause and close to the hearts of many, and I hope we
can rely on your generous support.
Looking ahead, we are due to open at the West Yorkshire Playhouse in March 2010 with a production of
Fiddler On The Roof. It is many years since LAOS last performed this marvellous show, which ran for
two weeks and was a huge success. In November 2010, we plan to perform Disney’s widely acclaimed
Beauty & The Beast here at the Grand Theatre. This will be a spectacular and popular production and a
must for the children, so please make a note in your diaries. Exact dates for both productions are
detailed in adverts in this programme.
Of course, as we all know, productions of this magnitude cannot go on without
tremendous commitment from a huge number of people. LAOS, led by
our Chairman Mike Porter and his team, have done a magnificent job in
producing The King And I. Our thanks also go to the General Manager of
the Grand Theatre, Mr Ian Sime, who has given us so much support over
recent years along with his helpful and efficient staff.
It is a great honour to be President of this Society. On behalf of all
patrons who have enjoyed our productions for well over one hundred
years, I say thank you to all those, both on and off stage, who bring such
fun, drama and happiness into our lives. I wish LAOS every success this
week with The King And I, and with Fiddler On The Roof next Spring.

Rodgers and
Hammerstein
It is hard to believe that it is fifty years ago this week that the last Rodgers and Hammerstein
show opened on Broadway. On 16 November 1959, The Sound of Music opened at the LuntFontanne Theatre in New York, the last of the nine musicals composed by this great partnership.
For sixteen years, starting in 1943 with Oklahoma!, Rodgers and Hammerstein brought the
world some of the most popular musicals ever written. Following Oklahoma! came Carousel,
Allegro, South Pacific, The King and I, Me and Juliet, Pipe Dream, Flower Drum Song and The
Sound of Music.
They wrote State Fair for the silver screen and Cinderella for television, both of which became
successful stage musicals. Six of their shows became popular movies; indeed, The Sound of
Music is still one of the greatest box office hits of all time.
There have been major revivals of most of the above shows - South Pacific is currently enjoying
a successful run on Broadway at the Lincoln Center and is due to open in London before too
long, and The Sound of Music has just finished a two year run at the London Palladium and is
now touring the UK to packed houses.
Long may this continue!

History
of the Show
Based on Margaret Landon’s Anna and the King of Siam, the first production of The
King And I opened at the St James Theatre, New York on 29 March 1951, and went
on to play for 1,246 performances.
Broadway and London theatre star Gertrude Lawrence originally took the idea of the
show to Rodgers and Hammerstein, who were immediately intrigued by the story.
It was the first show they had written specifically with an actor in mind to portray a
particular role, in this case Ms Lawrence for the role of Anna.
Various actors including Rex Harrison, Alfred Drake and Noël Coward were
considered for the role of The King; however, all declined. Mary Martin, who at that
time was still starring in South Pacific, recommended Yul Brynner to Rodgers and
Hammerstein. He was cast immediately.
The show contains some of the most popular songs written by Rodgers and
Hammerstein, including Hello Young Lovers, Shall We Dance? and I Whistle a Happy
Tune. During tryouts for the show, it was felt that a number was needed for Anna
and the children. A song entitled Suddenly Lucky which had been dropped from
South Pacific was introduced – this was re-written as Getting to Know You and has
become a great favourite with audiences.
The London production of The King And I opened at The Theatre Royal, Drury Lane
on 8 October 1953, going on to play 926 performances. Herbert Lom played The
King and Valerie Hobson played Anna. It was the fourth consecutive Rodgers and
Hammerstein show to play this theatre.
On 28 June 1956, 20th Century Fox released the big screen version of The King And I,
with Yul Brynner recreating his role of The King and Deborah Kerr playing Anna.
The film was a huge success and was nominated for nine Academy Awards,
eventually winning five, including Best Actor for Brynner. The original soundtrack
album also went on to be a best seller and has remained in constant print for over
fifty years.
There have been productions of the show all over the world, and it has been
translated into several different languages. The passage of time has also seen many
revivals, notably the 1977 Broadway production with Brynner as The King. This
production transferred to the London Palladium in 1979, when Virginia McKenna
starred as Anna opposite Brynner.
1996 brought another Broadway revival, opening at the Neil Simon Theatre on 11
April, this time with Lou Diamond Phillips and Donna Murphy as the two leads.
This same production opened on 3 May 2000 at the London Palladium, when Jason
Scott Lee and Elaine Paige starred.
This is the first time LAOS have presented The King And I. We hope you enjoy this
spectacular and much loved show.

The place is Bangkok, Siam, the time is the early 1860s. Anna Leonowens arrives
by boat from England with her young son Louis, to commence her employment as
schoolteacher and governess to the Royal Children of the King of Siam.
As she is introduced to the King and various characters in his court, Anna soon
learns much of the King’s influence on his subjects, and of the many differences
between the culture of Siam and her own. But as a widow with a dependent child,
Anna needs to work, and so despite the many challenges presented, she perseveres.
This is helped in no small way by the relationship she quickly develops with the
Royal Children, whom she finds enchanting and who love her dearly. Anna’s
understanding of the King is also encouraged by Lady Thiang, the King’s Head Wife.
However, Anna’s residence within the Royal household is not without its sadness.
She befriends Tuptim, who has been presented to the King as a gift from Burma.
Despite this, Tuptim is in love with Lun Tha. Anna tries to help the young lovers
through their plight, but with unfortunate consequences.
When news arrives from Britain that the King is considered a barbarian, he is
anxious to refute these reports and seeks Anna’s advice. From then on, their
relationship develops with such strength and depth that very few, least of all Anna
and the King, could foresee.

About NODA
The National Operatic and Dramatic Association (NODA), founded in 1899, is the main representative body for
amateur theatre in the UK. It has a membership of some 2500 amateur/community theatre groups and 3000
individual enthusiasts throughout the UK, staging musicals, operas, plays, concerts and pantomimes in a wide variety
of performing venues, ranging from the country’s leading professional theatres to village halls.
NODA is divided into eleven national Regions, each headed by a Regional Councillor who sits on the Council, the
ruling body of the Association. They are supported by a network of Regional Representatives and other volunteers.
These volunteers are the vital link to the grass roots of the Association, the amateur theatre companies themselves.
The Association is administered from its Headquarters in Peterborough, with knowledgeable and friendly staff able
to deal with virtually any enquiry relating to amateur theatre.
There is a broad range of ages involved with amateur theatre nationwide, from a burgeoning number of youth groups
to adult companies, which meet the needs of all levels of both performers, whether dramatic or musical, and
enthusiasts involved backstage, front of house or in administration.
NODA aims
- To give a shared voice to the amateur theatre sector.
- To help amateur societies and individuals achieve the highest standards of best practice and performance.
- To provide leadership and advice to enable the amateur theatre sector to tackle the challenges and opportunities
of the 21st century.
For all details of the Association, contact NODA House, 58-60 Lincoln Road, Peterborough PE1 2RZ.

LOUISE DENISON - Director and Choreographer
LAOS welcomes Louise back to the helm, continuing her association with us which
began in 2003 when she choreographed 42nd Street, and Hello, Dolly! the following
year. She has directed and choreographed all our shows since then, most recently
The Producers at the West Yorkshire Playhouse earlier this year.
Louise trained in Leeds with Jean Pearce and John Auty, and at the Laban Centre,
London. Her performing career was cut short by injury, around the same time she
was asked to choreograph her first show at York Theatre Royal.
Throughout her career, she has directed and/or choreographed hundreds
of shows of all types, and has recently won awards for best direction,
choreography and overall production.
Louise and two colleagues formed production company Locked Out
Productions in 2007, in order to bring new and exciting shows to the
region. She is also Artistic Director of DAMUUS Dance Co, a company aimed
at bridging the gap between the young amateur and professional dancer. This is their
tenth year, which they celebrated with a performance at Wakefield Theatre Royal in
July. In addition, Louise is Resident Choreographer at Scala Performing Arts in Leeds,
and is a freelance teacher of Dance & Musical Theatre, having taught in schools and
colleges throughout Britain, plus short spells in Europe and Australia.
Choreography for television includes Heartbeat, The Dancer, Panto Time, My Parents
Are Aliens, Emmerdale, The Booze Cruise, Bernard’s Watch, The Marchioness and
BBC’s Children In Need.
JIM LUNT - Musical Director
We are delighted to welcome back our Musical Director of our Spring
show earlier this year, The Producers at the West Yorkshire Playhouse.
Jim has held the baton at Leeds now since 2005, when he joined us for
Jesus Christ Superstar.
Jim has a wealth of musical experience. He has been involved with a
number of West Yorkshire groups over the years, and has been Musical
Director for the pantomime at Leeds City Varieties for fifteen
seasons. He has been MD for the Potato Room Players here in
Leeds, St Andrew’s Players in Harrogate, and for Stage 84 at the
Alhambra Theatre in Bradford. Further afield, he works on an annual
basis with 250 young people at the Swan Theatre in High Wycombe,
producing a full scale musical in only two weeks.
Jim is a composer in his own right, having been shortlisted for the prestigious national
Vivienne Ellis Award for new musicals when he co-wrote the musical adaptation of Alice
Through The Looking Glass. He also co-wrote the music for a children’s Christmas musical The
Grinch Who Stole Christmas, and has written TV jingles for two well known breakfast cereals.
In addition, Jim works as a musical arranger - recent work includes theatre shows for Page &
Moy cruise liners and BBC Radio Four drama. Jim is also actively involved in delivering and
managing community arts projects in South Yorkshire.

Rob is a newcomer to LAOS, but no stranger to playing
The King, this being his third appearance in the role (and
he insists his last!). He first portrayed the character three
years ago at Buxton Opera House with the Endellion
Theatre Company, and then again earlier this year
with Doncaster AOS at Doncaster Civic Theatre.
Over the past seven years or so, Rob has played many
other principal roles in musical theatre, including The
Emcee in Cabaret with Splinters Musical Theatre
Group in Sheffield (University Drama Studio), and
Ciaiphas in Jesus Christ Superstar with the Endellion
Theatre Company (Buxton Opera House). He has played
the role of Ethan in The Full Monty twice, once with the
Barnsley-based RATS (Penistone Paramount), and again
with the Lamproom Players (Lamproom Theatre, Barnsley).
Etcetera, etcetera, etcetera!
He sang in the Sing Live UK concert A Night Of 1000 Voices
at the Royal Albert Hall, helping to raise funds for the
British Heart Foundation and the Caron Keating
Foundation. He has also performed solo work with Sing Live
at Sheffield City Hall and Bridgewater Hall in Manchester.
Aside from musical theatre, Rob says his biggest challenge so
far has been learning a total of eight different parts for the
Endellion Theatre Company production of A Man For All
Seasons last year, which was staged in the atmospheric
Sheffield Cathedral.
Rob would like to thank his wife Claire and their three
children Christopher, Amy and Jack for their patience and
support during rehearsals for The King And I.

This is Katrina’s first show with LAOS, and she comes to us with a wealth
of experience in the theatre. Dancing since the age of four, she began
treading the boards at the Victoria Theatre in Halifax, first with the Halifax
YMCA Pantomime Society, and then taking principal roles with both
Halifax Light and Halifax Amateur Operatic Societies, including Nancy in
Oliver! (1995), the title role in Calamity Jane (1997), Hodel in Fiddler On
The Roof (1999), Lottie in Mack & Mabel (2000), and Nellie Forbush in
South Pacific (2002).
Katrina has twice played Anna before, with Keighley AODS in 2004, and
again last year with Ilkley AOS, the latter winning her “Best Actress in a
Musical” at the Wharfedale Festival.
Elsewhere, Katrina’s principal roles have included Julie Jordan in
Carousel with Woodseats Musical Theatre Company (Sheffield
Lyceum); Eliza Doolittle in My Fair Lady with Great Horton
Theatre Company (Bradford Alhambra); Polly in Crazy For You
– a role she has played twice, once at the Bradford Alhambra,
and again at Leeds City Varieties with the Potato Room Players;
Jane in Witches of Eastwick with Upstagers Theatre Group;
Reno Sweeney in Anything Goes – with Ilkley AOS, Guiseley
AOS and Bingley AOS – again winning the Wharfedale
Festival for her Ilkley performance.
Play credits include Jan in I’ll Be Back Before Midnight, and
Fliss in Lust In The Dust, both with Bingley Little Theatre
earlier this year. Katrina’s TV appearances feature Emmerdale,
Coronation Street, Where The Heart Is, Royal Today, Heartbeat,
and Married Single Other.

Alex will be most recently remembered here at LAOS for his portrayal of Leo in
The Producers at the West Yorkshire Playhouse earlier this year. He originally
joined us for our 2005 production of Jesus Christ Superstar, when he played
Judas, going on the following year to play Tony in West Side Story, again at the
Playhouse. He has also taken several leading principal roles with Harrogate St
Andrew’s Players, namely Galileo in We Will Rock You, and in Spring this year
he appeared as Seymour in Little Shop Of Horrors, both at Harrogate Theatre.
Any fans of the TV show Musicality, screened five years ago, may also recall

Originally from Colchester in Essex, Richard studied in Durham some 15 years ago, and has
happily stayed up north ever since, having now lived in Leeds since 1998. He first appeared
with LAOS in our 2005 production of Jesus Christ Superstar at the West Yorkshire Playhouse,
when he played Ciaiphas. This was followed two years later by his portrayal of the evil Judge
Turpin in Sweeney Todd.
Richard’s highlights in musical theatre elsewhere include playing Charlie in Merrily We
Roll Along, and the title role in Sweeney Todd. However, Richard is also passionate about opera,
and has played a range of roles from the extremes of the genre, including Ping in Puccini’s
Turandot, Swallow in Britten’s Peter Grimes, Papagano in Mozart’s Magic Flute, and Columbus in
the UK premier of The Voyage by Philip Glass.

Bradley will be remembered for his portrayal of The Artful
Dodger in Oliver! with LAOS last year, a part he had
previously played in a school production. He has taken
several principal roles with various amateur companies,
including Nathan in The Full Monty (Stampede
Theatre Company in Yeadon), Michael in Peter Pan
(Ilkley AOS), and Joseph in Joseph and the Amazing
Technicolor Dreamcoat. This will be his third
production of The King And I, having played the
role of Louis twice, both with Ilkley and Bingley
AOS. Professionally, he appeared in the QDOS
pantomime Dick Whittington with Billy Pearce at
the Alhambra Theatre in Bradford.
In amongst rehearsals, Bradley also travelled to
Ecuador and The Galapagos Islands (unfortunately not
Thailand!) earlier this summer, on a trip organised
through his school with the World Challenge Group.

Bradley began singing at an early age, and last year won
“Most Promising Musician” for singing at school. Bradley is
keen to pursue a career in Performing Arts.
Callum’s first production with LAOS was in Oliver! here
at the Grand last year, when he played a workhouse boy
and was a member of Fagin’s gang. He is very keen on
musical theatre, and has previously appeared in
productions of Cinderella (2005/06), Snow White
(2006/07), and was also in the ensemble of the UK
tour of Chitty Chitty Bang Bang in 2008. Earlier this
year, he appeared at Bradford Alhambra in the
Studio La Pointe production of A Night At The
Oscars.
Callum has been singing since the age of six.
He attends Studio La Pointe College in Garforth,
and hopes to pursue a career in the theatre.

This is Arian’s second production with LAOS, having joined us
to play the role of Charley Bates in Oliver! here at the Grand
last November. Arian has been interested in performance
from a very young age, and hopes to pursue this further
in the future. He has appeared in various local theatre
productions, namely The Wizard Of Oz (West
Yorkshire Playhouse), The Musicians and The
Weavers (both Carriageworks Theatre). He also
appeared in and choreographed Jack Frost The
Outsider at Harrogate Theatre.
Arian has also been involved in workshops and
educational DVDs, and TV appearances include
Prank Patrol, My Spy Family and Emmerdale.
Arian would like to thank his family and friends for
their ongoing support, and in particular his mum, who
apparently provides the best taxi service in town!
ARIAN MIRZAALI

This is Max’s second production with LAOS, having
joined us to be a workhouse boy and a member of
Fagin’s gang in Oliver! last November. Max’s
enthusiasm for performance extends to the screen
too, and he has appeared as an extra in both
Emmerdale and Heartbeat, and played himself
on Nick Junior’s What’s My News when he was
seven years old.
Max loves acting, singing and dancing, and in
particular Ballet. He is a student at both Scala and
Elevations, and hopes to pursue a career in dance
when he is older.

St, Gemma’s Hospice, based in Moortown, Leeds, is the largest hospice in West Yorkshire. We provide
specialist medical and nursing care to over 1,000 local people with cancer and other life threatening illnesses
every year.
We have 32 beds at the Hospice for In-Patients. For those patients who wish to receive care and support at
home, our team of Community Nurse Specialists visit people at home and our Day Hospice is available for
those who wish to make daily or weekly visits to receive care and treatment. Last year we received 634
admissions to the Hospice, our Day Hospice had 1,801 attendances and our team of Community Nurse
Specialists made 2,884 home visits. We also provide bereavement counselling for families and carers.
St. Gemma’s is proud to offer all its services free of charge to patients, their families and carers. This year it
will cost over £7 million to run the Hospice and we need to raise over half of this from donations and events.
On behalf of the patients and staff at St. Gemma’s Hospice, thank you for your generous support. If you would
like more information about the Hospice, or if you are able to help in any way, please contact Donna
Woodman on 0113 2185559 or [email protected].

THE LEEDS AMATEUR OPERATIC SOCIETY
The Leeds Amateur Operatic Society was formed in October 1890, and in December of that year
presented its first show HMS Pinafore at the Leeds Rifle Barracks in Carlton Hill. The following
two annual productions were presented at the Coliseum (which later became the Gaumont) in
Cookridge Street. In 1893 the Society moved to the Grand Theatre to present La Fille de Madame
Angot and has enjoyed the use of this lovely theatre ever since.
The Society presented annual musical productions up to the First World War, with several plays
during the war years. After the war, the Society returned to presenting musicals starting with
Merrie England. A mixture of old and new productions including the new style American musical
comedies continued until the beginning of the Second World War. After performing Ivor Novello’s
Glamorous Night in 1939, the Society ceased producing shows until after the war.
In 1948 the Society was reformed with management recruited from theatre enthusiasts within the
world of business in Leeds. The first production was Noël Coward’s romantic Bitter Sweet. From
then on, the Society endeavoured to present modern shows as soon as they became available
together with more conventional operettas. The 1966 production of Song of Norway was entered
into the Waterford International Festival of Light Opera. The production was well received and
won the International Trophy for Best Production. The following year, The Count of Luxembourg
won the same award.
As the years have progressed, suitable shows have become more and more difficult to find, as all
too often they are withdrawn from amateur performance owing to professional revival.
In 1990 the Society celebrated its Centenary Year. The celebrations began with the 100 Musical
Years concert. The show was so popular that the Society continued to stage this production each
Autumn until 2006. Until 2004, these concerts were performed at the former Leeds Civic Theatre.
Owing to the sad closure of this theatre in 2005, we were fortunate to perform that year at the
famous City Varieties Music Hall, moving to the new Carriageworks Theatre for our 2006
production Jazz It Up.
In 2005, with the Grand Theatre closed for renovation, the Society was thrilled to be able to
perform at the West Yorkshire Playhouse, with the highly successful production of Jesus Christ
Superstar. We have been able to continue this association with subsequent productions of West
Side Story, Sweeney Todd and The Producers.
We returned to the Grand Theatre in the Spring of 2007 with Ragtime, followed by Oliver! in the
Autumn of 2008, and now with The King And I.
In 2010 the Society is in the very fortunate position to be presenting productions at both these
wonderful, yet diverse, Leeds theatres – Fiddler On The Roof at the West Yorkshire Playhouse in
March and Beauty & The Beast at the Grand Theatre in November.
