Liberation Route in Gelderland
The Liberation Route in Gelderland is a unique way of experiencing
what happened around Arnhem, Nijmegen and the Veluwe in 1944 and
1945. It is a route that takes you to over 170 audio spots in Gelderland,
Overijssel, Zeeland, Limburg and Brabant, each telling its own
interesting and often moving story about the civilians and soldiers who
lived and fought there in 1944-45.
The Liberation Route in Gelderland is part of the Liberation Route
Europe. It gives you the chance to discover the route that the Western
Allied Forces took during the final phase of the Second World War
connecting the regions from southern England, to the beaches of
Normandy, the Belgian Ardennes, the Netherlands, the Hürtgen Forest
and on to Berlin and the Polish city of Gdansk.

The Liberation Route has been designed so that you can
plan your own route. How you follow the Liberation Route
is entirely up to you. You can walk, cycle or drive and be
your own guide. Of course you can also book an organised
(guided) bus tour or a ‘liberation tour’ in a historical
vehicle! All of the audio spots are marked on a map on our
website and in our brochures.
Here you can find information about the nearby
memorials, museums and cemeteries; photos, videos,
routes, touristic package deals, events and you can
download all audio stories.

Arnhem has a rich and eventful past. World War II is a theme in all historical accounts of the city. The
Battle of Arnhem, battled out on the banks of the Rhine in September 1944, was part of Operation Market
Garden. Visit one of the museums on this traumatic part of Arnhem history. The Information centre Battle
of Arnhem overlooks the John Frost Bridge and is housed on Rijnkade. Alternatively, visit Airborne Museum
‘Hartenstein’ in Oosterbeek (near Arnhem).

On this historic site photos and personal
accounts give you a sense of what life was
like for soldiers and civilians who lived and
fought in Arnhem in September 1944. A
video presentation shows the course of the
battle. Admission is free!

Arnhem in this attractive and contemporary
museum. In the Airborne Experience you
will follow in the footsteps of British paras
and set off to Arnhem in September 1944.
You will meet cheering civilians who have
suffered under German rule for four long
years. However, Arnhem proved to be ‘A
bridge too far’.

Eusebius church has dominated the
Arnhem cityscape for more than five
centuries and tells the history of the capital
of Gelderland from the Middle Ages until
World War II and the post-war
reconstruction.
The first and second floor of the
Eusebius Tower play host to the ‘The Battle
of Arnhem – 70 years of unfinished past’
exhibition. The exhibition uses film footage
to tell the story of one of the heaviest allied
defeats in World War II.

Hartenstein Villa is situated on the edge of Oosterbeek, this exquisite
building is the Airborne Museum’s home. It was no coincidence that
the museum was established in this villa. During the Battle of Arnhem,
Hartenstein Villa was Major-General Urquhart’s British headquarters.
The battle lasted nine days, from the 17th till the 25th of September
1944. It was intended to bring a swift end to the Second World War, but
that is not what happened...

This underground space provides an immersive and
imposing experience of the Battle of Arnhem. Stories
of British, Polish and German soldiers come to life in
Hartenstein Villa. Civilians also play an important role; they
lived in mortal fear. The museum has a large collection of
authentic weaponry, documents, footage and photographs

Your trip through the Park
The scenery of the Hoge Veluwe National Park is
overwhelming. The various Old-Veluwe landscapes alternate;
your trip through the Park takes you through deciduous,
coniferous and mixed forests as well as heathlands (wet and
dry), grassy plains and drift sand landscapes. A trip through
the Park should include a visit to the Kröller-Müller Museum,
owner of the second largest Van Gogh exhibition. Free White
Bikes to explore the Park are available at any time.
The variety of landscapes makes it a unique trip as the
views of a forest of large pine trees are quite different
from those of a vast heath or drift sand plain.

The museum is the life’s work of Helene Kröller-Müller,
who acquired around 11,500 works of art with her
husband Anton Kröller between

The Netherlands Open Air Museum
The Netherlands Open Air Museum is full of stories. They are hidden in
the historic houses, mills and farmhouses in the museum park, as well
as in our work, lives, customs and traditions. We bring these stories to
life during a visit to the museum. Here you can immerse yourself in the
past and get to know the Dutch history - as well as your own. In the
museum there are many reenactors demonstrating the old way of life.
Among these demonstrations are paper production, linseed production, and beer brewing, which are all demonstrated in the old way. The

Doorwerth Castle
The Dutch province of Gelderland has many castles and historic
houses. Seven of the castles managed by the Gelderland Trust for
Natural Beauty and Historic Houses are open to the public:
Ammersoyen, Cannenburch, Doorwerth, Hernen, Rosendael, Verwolde
and Zypendaal. You can visit the estates with their houses and castles
and experience the atmosphere as they have been in their glory days.
At Hernen you can explore the impressive bare medieval castle with a
magic lantern and join the young married couple that refurbished it in
1544.

In addition to guided tours, the castles play host to various
expositions, performances and other events. Many of the
castles also form a rich backdrop for commercial events
and meetings. All of these activities allow a broad
audience to actively learn about our architectural traditions
and the bygone castle culture and lifestyle.
Many visitors take guided tours of the castles and a lot
of people attend a concert, wedding ceremony or special
event in these castles each year. The other 28 castles
and country homes managed by the Gelderland Trust for
Natural Beauty and Historic Houses are leased as private
homes, visitor centres and party centres.

The Veluwsche Stoomtrein Maatschappij (VSM) is operating a heritage
railway for over forty years between Apeldoorn - Beekbergen Loenen - Eerbeek and Dieren. Be sure to visit the VSM Railway Museum
in Beekbergen. This museum includes the locomotive workshop and
the railway depot where water and coal is taken on board. During trips
there is a 45 minute stop to enjoy this impressive exhibition. Relax with

Every year De Beeldentuin in Garderen plays host to ‘t Veluws Zandsculpturenfestijn (Veluwe Sand Sculpture Festival). Sand artists build
imposing sculptures in the wooded area in picturesque Garderen. The
theme changes annually. There are a restaurant and tearoom on site.

A trip into medieval times
