Headline news last week was “15 Queenstown businesses in breach of
employment law”. Shock horror - what was the crime? Operating a sweat shop?
Child exploitation? Or lack of proper record keeping and paperwork? Mostly the
latter, nothing as serious as the prior but still, a clear indication not all is well in the
world of employer/employee relations in Queenstown.
It is a common problem here for employers to have to hire countless times a
season as the revolving door of transient working holidaymakers, or as the Ministry
of Business, Innovation and Employment (MBIE) call them “migrant workers”
come and go. The wages are low, befitting the level of previous experience most
“migrant” workers have and the commitment level is also low given the migrating
lifestyle of the workforce. Here today and gone tomorrow. Promises are made and
promises are broken on both sides of the employment negotiation table. There is
however no excuse for not paying a worker, any worker over 16 years of age, the
minimum wage at least.
One thing everyone should agree on is that a worker having to fight to get the
minimum wage is a sad state of affairs for a town like Queenstown which prides
itself on being modern, sophisticated and worldly. How can we be worldly and offer
quality services when we have such a reliance on young migrant workers only
worth the minimum, or in some employers eyes less than the minimum.

It is part of the deal for some visiting backpackers to pick up any job for any pay
and chalk the “exploitation” they experience down to overseas adventure, before
starting a much better paid career back in their home countries. For employers
the cycle of recruitment and training of inexperienced uncommitted staff results
in an unwillingness to value employees. This has to stop. And if that means less
job opportunities for working holidaymakers and more invested into long term
employees, then the recent toughening up of rules around working holiday visas
are a step in the right direction. The consequence of that however is an even
greater desperation for those young visitors unable to get work visa extensions who
really do need to earn money in New Zealand, which pushes worker rights deeper
underground and further from New Zealand employment law standards.
There is no easy fix to employment issues here in the Wakatipu. We will always
need seasonal short term low value employees to bolster the roster in peak holiday
periods. However it takes commitment to an employee, who in turn needs to show
commitment to the employer even on a short term contract before appreciation of
worth translates to higher wages. That’s the positive result everybody wants. More
committed employees, more profitable businesses and higher wages.

You Can’t Eat Your Sense Of Entitlement
To the minority of people who don’t understand how
restaurants and reservations work… When you rock up
to a popular local eatery without a reservation, on one of
the busiest weekends of the season, you would be wise
to prepare yourself for some bad news.
Yes, you are correct in observing that there are empty
tables. Sadly, they will not be empty for long, having been
booked already by legends able to use a phone and/ or
the internet. Please believe me when I assure you that local
businesses do not get a kick out of turning away customers;
nor do we do it for our own entertainment.
I understand that perhaps you would prefer not to eat at
the bar, but standing and muttering about poor service
over a drink will not ingratiate you to the staff, nor will it
magic you up a table. Most restaurants book tables in slots
of two hours – that means that a table booked for 7pm will
be unavailable at 6pm – will you really be able to enjoy
your time with us if we allot you an hour to eat a three
course meal, or better yet chase you off the table before
dessert? Nah, I thought not.
Trust us when we urge you to book ahead. Trust that there
are processes in place to ensure that things run smoothly,
and our guests have the experience they deserve and pay
for. Trust that the service industry is not saturated with a
bunch of imbeciles who need outside help to discover
that a vacant seat could be making them a buck. We’ve
got this.
We expend a great deal of effort on delivering impeccable
customer service. The other side of the coin is that some
people deserve it more than others. Hospitality workers
are subjected to an awful lot of criticism, and rarely
afforded the chance to answer back. I’m only writing this
because of your loud comment at the time to the tune of
‘this is why the Lakes has a whinge section.’ Yeah, it is.

Waiting on Queenstown
The Destruction Of Christmas Is Almost Complete
I thought I heard it the other day, albeit in a hushed tone,
almost a whisper, and delivered in a soft conspiratorial
voice -- something that honestly sounded like “Merry
Christmas.” But when I asked the speaker to repeat what
he said, his face turned pink and apologetic, and the
gutless, weak-as-dishwater, politically correct “Happy
holidays” formed on his lips as he walked off.
Further evidence of the destruction of Christmas and
everything it stands for can found in my local New World
supermarket at Frankton, where I shop each week and
hand over my hard-earned cash as I support that store.
There is no sign of Santa, not that I expected such a
blasphemous outrage, but surely a “Merry Christmas!”
somewhere in the store? But no. Above the vegetables
as you go in the door, they have an almost primitive,
child-like sign in large white blocks, reminiscent of primary
school, saying: “happy holidays” and strange drawings
of pixies and dwarves marching up and down above the
cabbages and cauliflowers.
Happy WHAT holidays, you gutless people? In case
you have been living in a hole somewhere or under a
rock in the petrified forest in Siberia, we are about to
celebrate Christmas. No, don’t fall into shock.

I guess the simple answer is that Santa had an untimely early
end to his career in our store.
For the last few years the centre piece of our decorations

given to us by the politically correct controllers of this
once proud nation, where our fathers and grandfathers
fought to preserve our way of life.
We are so naive, aren’t we, folks? We don’t even have
the guts to stand up for what we believe in case it offends
some bugger somewhere, somebody who hates our
way of life and all that we stand for, somebody who has
chosen to come HERE and not us THERE, somebody
for whom we fall over backwards to please, while full of
apologies for even discussing our own culture and way
of life.
