© AMSOIL INC 2010 MAY 2010 In a Dealer newsletter I read recently, the author shared the sentiment that “there has never been a better time to be an AMSOIL Dealer.” We have all heard this before. Maybe even too many times. I have said it myself. But each time I have said it, it was true. With each succeeding year we see forces within the industry pushing even harder toward increased demand for synthetic lubricants. Along with that, of course, is the continued push toward extended drain intervals. The world is catching on. The demand for our products is increasing, and, yes, the opportunity does keep getting better for AMSOIL Dealers. It is not difficult to identify some of the circumstances throughout the years that have advanced our cause. In the mid-seventies when Mobil 1 was introduced, many Dealers expressed concern. They feared that with a second synthetic motor oil now on the market, our sales would suffer. I knew, however, that Mobil’s near-limitless advertising budget would ultimately work in our favor. They would spend millions to help educate the public on the benefits of synthetic oil. They did, and we grew. It was about this time that gasoline was in short supply and prices soared. Fuel economy became a major concern, and our gas-guzzlers of the sixties were being replaced by more fuel efficient compacts. As the need among consumers to cut fuel costs increased, our Dealers capitalized with sales of lubricants that actually did make a difference. We are seeing similar concerns with fuel economy today, particularly in the commercial market. Another significant event impacted the demand for synthetics. This one more subtle, perhaps, than the Mobil 1 introduction, but significant nonetheless, especially as an indicator of where the industry was headed. In early 1991, General Motors halted sales of the Corvette ZR-1. Eight engines had seized at its Bowling Green, Kentucky assembly plant. The temperature had dipped to slightly below freezing and, at start-up, hardto-pump motor oil did not reach the front camshaft bearings. They were destroyed by lack of lubrication. GM responded by requiring the use of synthetic oil in the Corvette, as well as its Syclone pickup truck. It was the first time an American auto manufacturer had required, not just recommended, but required the use of a synthetic oil as a factory-fill. It was clear to me then that GM’s decision was just the beginning. More factory-fills would follow. The door had just opened a little wider for AMSOIL Dealers. Not long after the Corvette was treated to synthetic oil, virtually all the other oil manufacturers introduced synthetics of their own. They, like Mobil, spent millions advertising their “ground-breaking” new products. Castrol alone spent $25 million. The floodgates had opened, and as awareness among consumers reached an all-time high, our sales continued to climb. Today, of course, consumer awareness has never been greater. According to one source, the demand for synthetic motor oil is projected to grow at a rate of more than 7.3 percent per year through 2013. Others have projected even higher rates. Growth is expected to continue in the light vehicle market, with a strong push in the medium and heavy-duty truck markets. Transmission fluids and hydraulic oils are also expected to increase in demand. There are other trends working in our favor. Drivers are keeping their vehicles longer. They are putting tens of thousands of more miles on their current vehicles than they put on their previous vehicles. That means thousands of more dollars spent on maintenance. As this trend continues, we’ll see demand for our products increase and opportunities for our Dealers expand. Our established and well-deserved reputation as the leader in extended drain technology will continue to create opportunities, as well. As it stands now, the majority of drivers have moved beyond the 3,000 mile drain. Reports suggest that the average person changes oil every 4,500 miles, which may be conservative. And now, as auto manufacturers continue to extend their oil drain recommendations, that number will increase. Those who purchase a Ford today are instructed by their owner’s manual to change their oil at 7,500 miles. GM owners are instructed to change theirs according to their oil monitoring systems. In some cases, that can go well over 10,000 miles. GM went as far as endorsing the California Environmental Protection Agency’s “3,000 Mile Myth” campaign to educate drivers on extended drain intervals and reducing oil consumption. This all leads to even more opportunity for AMSOIL Dealers. The movement toward synthetic lubricants and extended drain intervals has gained irreversible momentum, and the future for our Dealers has never looked brighter. In fact, and I’ll let you finish the line for me, “There has never been a better time…” A. J. “Al” Amatuzio President and CEO, AMSOIL INC. 2 AMSOIL ACTION NEWS / MAY 2010 Heavy-Duty Transmission Shop Counts on AMSOIL Products Personal Experience Motivates Shop Owner HI-TECH INC. in East Longmeadow, Mass. is a transmission specialties shop that uses and recommends AMSOIL synthetic lubricants. “I’ve been installing AMSOIL products in my vehicles and customers’ vehicles for years,” said William Taft Jr., the companys’ owner and president. “I don’t sell anything that is not tried and proven by my experience and see seeing for myself. I have to sell myself before I wou be able to sell it to the consumer.” would Taft has been a ROTS account with Direct Dealer Mark Hansen of Chicopee, Mass. since 1998. Taft’s shop services all types of foreign and domestic transmissions. “We work on a lot of heavy-duty vehicles, local departments of public works, fire and police cars and SUVs,” he said. Cooling Down Ford Transmissions About the time Taft became an AMSOIL account, he had problems with Ford pick-up trucks overheating transmission fluid and sending it out the dipstick tube. “Sometimes it caught the truck on fire because of fluid hitting the hot exhaust manifold,” Taft said. “We started installing large auxiliary coolers on the transmissions and that brought the temp down, but still not enough to fix the problem.” AMSOIL ATF Solves Problem Taft decided to give AMSOIL Universal Automatic Transmission Fluid (ATF) a try in the trucks. “We started putting AMSOIL ATF in the transmissions and found a huge drop in temperature by just changing the transmission fluid over,” Taft said. “There has never been a failure because of overheating from any of the transmissions we have rebuilt in the many years we have been using AMSOIL in these vehicles.” Customer Sold on AMSOIL Quality, Performance John Rummel of Puyallup, Wash. is an AMSOIL customer who grew up listening to muscle cars and learning all the nuances of engine sounds. Rummel is a Preferred Customer of Dealers Bret and Carrie Boster, also of Puyallup. Rummel learned of AMSOIL through researching synthetic fluids on the Internet. “What sold me on AMSOIL was the data I discovered regarding the chemical processes to ‘manufacture’ other synthetics and the information about the original discovery of synthetics,” Rummel said. His 2007 double cab 4x4 Tundra has 13,000 miles on it. “I purchased it new,” he said. “At 195 miles I drained the factory oil, saw how dirty it was and filled with AMSOIL XL 5W-30 Motor Oil (XLF). Within a few minutes the engine idled smoother.” Rummel relocated the truck’s oil filter mount to fit the AMSOIL Ea015 Oil Filter and installed an aftermarket oil cooler. He changed out the front/rear differentials and transfer case and filled them with AMSOIL Severe Gear 75W-90 Gear Lube (SVG), and changed the transmission fluid to AMSOIL Synthetic Fuel Efficient Automatic Transmission Fluid (ATL). “I really noticed a difference with the ATF as the truck shifted more smoothly and seemed to coast further when I let off the accelerator,” he said. “Noteworthy is that I had Preferred Customer John Rummel’s 2007 Tundra with AMSOIL fluids bumper-to-bumper. already installed a stainless steel cat-back exhaust and cold-air intake. Although these changes improved engine performance, it was the transmission fluid change-out that brought the improved drivability.” AMSOIL lubes lived up to Rummel’s expectations on a recent trip to California. “I covered 1,000 miles in two days,” he said. “On parts of I-5 I was cruising at high speeds and the truck had no problems. I had installed AMSOIL Antifreeze/Coolant and even at 105 degrees Fahrenheit, the coolant temp never rose above normal — even when I was towing a car on the return trip, with full load.” AMSOIL ACTION NEWS / MAY 2010 3 D M Mann M Dave M. AMSOIL ACTION NEWS / MAY 2010 9 New AMSOIL Print Center The Online Print Center allows Dealers to order custom business cards. AMSOIL has formed an agreement with Service Printers of Duluth (Minn.) to provide AMSOIL Dealers with improved business card options. The AMSOIL Print Center allows Dealers to customize, proofread and pay for business cards online. Service Printers The AMSOIL Print Center is operated by Service Printers. Service Printers has printed nearly every AMSOIL publication, including the Action News, since 1972. The two companies have built an enduring relationship that is rare in today’s business world. Service Printers’ dedication to service and quality makes it the perfect complement for AMSOIL and AMSOIL Dealers. New Designs AMSOIL has traditionally offered only one two-color business card option. The new Print Center allows AMSOIL to expand the offering to include several fourcolor options. Customizable In addition to the expanded selection, Dealers can customize the various card styles with photos of select AMSOIL products. This allows Dealers who specialize in specific markets to feature the most relevant AMSOIL product on their business cards, while also allowing Dealers to create custom cards for different purposes. For example, a Dealer might have business cards featuring AMSOIL Synthetic Motorcycle Oil for use at a local powersports show, while using traditional twocolor business cards for calling on potential retail-onthe-shelf accounts. How It Works The link to the AMSOIL Print Center is on the main Dealer Zone Page. Click the link, login and begin browsing. Dealers enter the information they want to appear on their business cards. Dealers must review each order for accuracy before adding it to their shopping cart. Dealers are responsible for proofreading their own business cards – whatever is entered into the fields online is what will appear on the cards. Great Pricing Because Dealers order and proofread their own cards, premium four-color business cards ordered through the AMSOIL Print Center are priced near current two-color card prices. Faster Turnaround Cards ordered through the AMSOIL Print Center typically ship three to five business days after the order is placed. 10 AMSOIL ACTION NEWS / MAY 2010 AGGRAND, ALTRUM Options The AMSOIL Print Center also offers high-quality AGGRAND and ALTRUM business cards. Mail-In Form Still Available Dealers who still wish to use the mail-in/fax-in business card order form (G89) can do so; however, their options are limited. Only the traditional two-color business card design is available via the mail-in/fax-in form and, because these orders require additional labor, twocolor cards ordered via the mail-in/fax-in form will maintain current pricing. Additional Information Because the AMSOIL Print Center is managed by Service Printers, business cards no longer require a G-number. G09A - G09G are discontinued. AMSOIL Print Center Pricing Qty. 200 400 1,000 Two-Color $12.00 $15.60 $28.80 Premium Four-Color $18.00 $24.00 $33.60 Early Synthetic Lubrication History Experimentation with synthetic lubrication dates back as far as 1877, when the prominent chemist team of Charles Friedel and James Mason Crafts successfully used aluminum trichloride as a catalyst, creating the first known synthesized hydrocarbons. It wasn’t until 1929 that Standard Oil Company of Indiana commercialized the process, but the endeavor was unsuccessful due to lack of demand. The Zurich Aviation Congress became interested in the development of ester-based lubricants in 1937. The Germans, frustrated by the failure of petroleum lubricants during the cold weather of the Battle of Stalingrad, prepared and evaluated more than 3,500 esters between 1938 and 1944. Meanwhile, in the United States, the first diester base stocks (a compound using two ester groupings) were in development at the Naval Research Laboratory. By 1947, Great Britain had discovered the benefits of using diesters as lubricants in turboprop aircraft. Later, with the advent of highly sophisticated jet engines, research and development in the area of synthetic lubricants really took off, and various synthetic formulations were developed to meet the demands of the new engines. Synthetic Oil for Internal Combustion Engines The clear benefits of synthetic-based lubricants in jet engines impressed lieutenant colonel and jet fighter squadron commander Al Amatuzio, and in the early 1960s, he became interested in developing a synthetic motor oil for use in internal combustion engines. Given the significant differences between a jet engine and an internal combustion engine, it was a massive task, but Amatuzio was up to the challenge. By 1972, after several years of intense research and development, AMSOIL Synthetic Motor Oil was born, and it became the first 100 percent synthetic-based motor oil to pass American Petroleum Institute (API) service requirements. When it first hit the market, AMSOIL was far ahead of its time, and Amatuzio found it difficult to market such a revolutionary product. But with the complexity of engines increasing, forcing smaller engine designs and ever-increasing engine operating temperatures, engines demanded a superior lubricant. With the aid of the AMSOIL Dealer network, people began to discover it in AMSOIL. Competitors were forced to take notice, and soon industry giants Mobil, Quaker State, Castrol, Valvoline and Pennzoil were marketing their own synthetic variations. Strong Future for Synthetics Today, synthetic lubricants have become mainstream. Modern vehicles and equipment demand the protection and performance that only a synthetic can deliver. Synthetic lubricant sales are especially strong in Europe, where they account for approximately one third of lubricant sales and are used as factory-fill lubricants in one third of new vehicles sold there. Interest in the U.S. has also spiked in recent years. The vehicles of the future will continue to have smaller engines, stricter emissions requirements, higher performance characteristics and better fuel economy. According to R. David Whitby of Pathmaster Marketing, synthetic lubricants will show continued growth in the years ahead as the market continues to demand higher-performing lubricants. “I’m not just talking about trucks and cars on the road, but also gearboxes, industrial hydraulics and other equipment,” says Whitby. A new study from the Freedonia Group also forecasts strong growth for synthetic lubricants in the coming years, with demand for synthetic engine oils rising 7.3 percent per year to 2013. “Engine oils and hydraulic and transmission fluids will experience the fastest gains as synthetics finally begin to penetrate the conservative medium and heavy duty truck market, and as increasing new vehicle lubricant performance requirements and growing consumer acceptance further expand synthetics’ share of the light vehicle market,” stated the research firm. AMSOIL offers a full line of top-performing synthetic lubricants and is poised to capture ever-increasing market share as customers demand higher-quality lubrication protection for their vehicle and equipment investments. In a thrilling race at Auto Club Speedway in Fontana, Calif., Team AMSOIL road racing star Larry Pegram battled up front from start to finish and waited until the final two laps to make his move on leaders Jake Zemke and Aaron Yates, passing both to take his first American Superbike win of the 2010 season. Pegram also took an early lead on Sunday, but a crash on lap nine ended his bid for a weekend sweep. “I’m really excited to be back on top of the podium and in the hunt for the 2010 title,” said Pegram. “Auto Club Speedway has long been one of my favorite tracks, and I was really, really excited to finally get a win there.” AMSOIL is the Official Oil of AMA Pro Road Racing and presenting sponsor of the Daytona SportBike class. EAO13 CHANGE INTERVALS A small number of customers with 2001-2010 Honda and 2002-2010 Acura vehicles have reported their vehicles’ oil pressure lights have illuminated prior to reaching the end of the AMSOIL-recommended 25,000mile change interval. To protect the engine, the OEM engineered the oil pressure sensor to trigger the oil light when there is insufficient oil pressure to maintain an adequate level of protection. Each filter is equipped with a by-pass valve, so when the filter is at or close to capacity, the engine is continually supplied with adequate lubrication oil, although unfiltered. However, if the filter reaches maximum capacity, the level of restriction can become significant enough to trigger the oil pressure warning light. In extreme situations, oil starvation can occur. Premature oil filter capacity can be attributed to a number of factors such as poor air filtration, a leaking air intake system or excessive contaminants being produced in the combustion process. AMSOIL recommends changing the EaO13 Oil Filter according to OEM-recommended intervals in the following applications: • 2001-2010 Honda • 2002-2010 Acura • 1992-2006 Chrysler imports • 1993-1997 Ford Probe • 1996-2010 Nissan/Infiniti • 1971-2000 Mazda • 1999-2000 Mercury Villager • 1990-2010 Mitsubishi • 2004-2007 Saturn For more information, see the AMSOIL EaO13 Oil Filter Technical Service Bulletin located in the Technical Service Bulletins section of the Dealer Zone, or contact AMSOIL Technical Services at (715) 399-8324. AMSOIL MODIFIES T-1 LEADS QUALIFICATIONS Last December, AMSOIL implemented a revised T-1 Certification Program aimed at improving conversion of leads to buying customers. The revised T-1 Program has enabled the company to more efficiently and effectively respond to prospects, while increasing the opportunity for Dealers to convert them into customers. It has also generated a lot of Dealer feedback concerning the new qualification standards. After analyzing the numbers, AMSOIL decided to revise the qualification standards for remaining eligible for the Leads Program and Dealer Locator. These new qualification requirements take effect on June 1, 2010, when the current six-month grace period for all T-1 Dealers expires: New Qualification Standards A Dealer must earn commissions of at least $10 in the last six months and meet one of the following requirements: • Have at least one new, personally-sponsored customer (Dealer, PC,RA,CA) in the last six months. • Have at least five current, personally-sponsored customers (active Dealer/PC, protected CA/RA). When a Dealer becomes T-1 Certified, he or she earns the right to participate in the many AMSOIL co-op pro- Prerequisites: Must have previously attended other AMSOIL training such as AMSOIL University Core Technology Program, a C&F or CAT school or have sufficient field experience and an understanding of the basics of lubrication and general AMSOIL product knowledge. 3. Advanced Development Program - Directed specifically toward the well-established Dealer who is wellversed in the fundamentals of lubrication, administration and sales techniques. Prerequisites: Must have achieved Direct Jobber status. Previous completion of the Core Technology Program and Business Development Program is highly recommended. A welcoming reception, facility tour and cookout will be included at AMSOIL University at no extra cost. A 10 percent rebate will be offered on product orders placed while at AMSOIL University. grams. The next step is to register Dealers, Preferred Customers, retail or commercial accounts and generate a minimum of $10 in commissions. Once accomplished, the T-1 Dealer earns the right to participate in the Dealer Locator and Leads Program. While the qualifying requirements have been relaxed, they still require a Dealer to demonstrate the ability to register a new customer, earn commissions and service customers. The lead follow-up requirements for Dealers who receive T-1 issued leads remain unchanged. When a T-1 lead shows up in a Dealer’s Message Center, he or she has two days to accept or reject it. The Dealer then has seven days to log into the Dealer Zone and complete the follow-up section for the lead. Failing to respond to three T-1 leads in a row, or failing to provide follow-up confirmation for three T-1 leads in a row, results in that Dealer being removed from the program. One of the goals of the new T-1 Certification Program is to ensure that only Dealers serious about providing timely lead follow-up be allowed to participate. This goal will help improve the image of AMSOIL and the Dealer network and translate into more prospects being contacted and converted into customers. To meet CJ-4 requirements for shear stability, the American Petroleum Institute (API) requires diesel oils pass the Kurt Orbahn 90-Cycle Shear Stability Test. AMSOIL sent five competitive CJ-4 5W-40 synthetic diesel oils to an independent laboratory for shear-stability testing. Considering the tough environment that diesels present to lubricating oils, AMSOIL doubled the standard Kurt Orbahn 90-cycle test and had the oils tested for 180 cycles. 16 Kurt Orbahn Shear Stability Test Samples were then contaminated 180 Cycles with 2 and 4 percent ultra-low-sulfur All oils are 5W-40. As other oils lost viscosity 12 due to shearing forces and fuel dilution, their ability to protect against wear was jeopardized. 11 Valvoline Premium Blue Extreme Chevron Delo 400 LE Shell Rotella T AMSOIL Premium Mobil Delvac 1 ESP Valvoline Premium Blue Extreme Chevron Delo 400 LE Shell Rotella T AMSOIL Premium Mobil Delvac 1 ESP Valvoline Premium Blue Extreme Chevron Delo 400 LE Shell Rotella T AMSOIL Premium Mobil Delvac 1 ESP Valvoline Premium Blue Extreme Chevron Delo 400 LE Shell Rotella T 10 Initial Viscosity Sheared Viscosity 2% Fuel Dilution Sheared Viscosity *double-length test To order AMSOIL products call 1-800-777-7094 Technical Services: 715-399-TECH (715-399-8324) 4% Fuel Dilution Sheared Viscosity S A E 30 AMSOIL Premium S AE 40 AMSOIL Premium Diesel Oils are the premium choice for diesel applications, resisting shearing forces and fuel dilution to maintain their protective film strengths and stay in grade.
