President's Column
Rook’s Ramblings
Ro o k
T
hrough the first half of 2015, the Arizona Region of the
PCA has conducted 26 events. That does not include
PCA National or Region 8 events, or those hosted in
neighboring zones, such as the Roadrunner Region’s annual
Fiesta New Mexico, which typically is attended by some
AZPCA members every year.
Numbers, of course, are just numbers, and our goal as a club
is not quantity, but quality experiences in all our activities.
Most will agree, I believe, that our events are successful
due to the great work put into their planning by our club
volunteers.
AZPCA performance driving events are scheduled to start
up again in the fall. Check the website for the Autocross and
Driver Education schedules, which resume in September.
Our fourth annual AZPCA Night at the Diamondbacks
is coming up in August. It will be a particularly special
occasion at the ballpark, when Randy Johnson’s number
51 will be retired and those in attendance will receive a
T-shirt marking the occasion. It’s always a fun time with
fellow club members at Chase Field. Bob Bandera has put
together a great weekend in late August at the historic La
Posada Hotel in Winslow. Go to the website for details on
reserving your room, and come along for the scenic drive,
the obligatory visit to the “Standin’ on the Corner” photo
op and, of course, socializing with your PCA friends at the
charming and historic hotel.
Yo unger
cream at the General Store, in part because the parking is dirt/
gravel only! Back to Apache Junction, where we were followed
closely for a couple miles by one of Sheriff Joe’s finest (no
worries; I obey all traffic laws at all times. That is my story,
and I’m sticking to it.). We headed up Usery Pass Rd/Bush
Hwy to Saguaro Lake, where we stopped at the marina for a
drink and a snack. As we admired the view overlooking the
lake, the Thursday afternoon calm and quiet was broken by the
sudden rush of about 20 very quick boats speeding across the
lake, obviously to where their captains figured the fish would
be hungriest. Fishing tournament. Mixing bursts of speed with
patient durations waiting for the fish to cooperate. I get the
speed part, and I appreciate the fact that when our events end
we obsess over cleaning our cars instead of having to clean a
bunch of stinky fish. From the lake we drove on to the Beeline
back toward the Valley, through Fountain Hills to Rio Verde,
then through North Scottsdale, Carefree, Cave Creek and back
home. About 175 miles total. Long drive, but it’s what we do. ☺
Let’s go for a drive. We’ll see you at an AZPCA event.
I came across an article recently that lists “The 10 greatest
sports cars of all time,” as judged by Karl Brauer, a senior
director at Kelley Blue Book. Brauer’s list includes
Lamborghini, Ferrari, Jaguar, Shelby Cobra, Corvette, and
the Miata. But in his opinion, the Porsche 911 is the greatest
sports car of all time, “remarkable, because he believes the
car is an assembly of engineering design mistakes that should
undermine its performance… It boasts a more impressive
racing pedigree than any other road car ever produced, …
and its performance continues to set the bar by which all
other sports cars are measured.” Few of us Porschephiles
would disagree.
To celebrate my birthday in May, Debbie and I took the
Spyder out for a drive. The weather was perfect. We drove
the twisties to Canyon Lake, past Tortilla Flat to where the
road turns to dirt (in contrast to the road to the lake, the
stretch past Tortilla Flat is smooth and largely unclogged
by slow SUVs and trucks lugging boat trailers). On our way
back past Tortilla Flat we resisted the urge to stop for ice

f you attended the June meeting at Daily Dose on June 3,
you already know the news about the Writers Drawing. If
you didn’t, allow me to fill you in!
But first, some background. We often say that Going Places
is the newsletter for AZPCA members, by AZPCA members.
The articles are written and photos taken and submitted by a
variety of our members. We don’t have “staff” to assign to cover
events. It is considered one of the responsibilities of an event
chair to secure a volunteer to write an article about the event.
If an event occurs and the event chair does not recruit someone
to write an article for Going Places, and no one volunteers,
writes, and submits an article on their own, the event will not
be covered in the newsletter. It’s as simple as that. If you’ve
attended an event and were later disappointed to see it not
covered in GP, this is why.
Brasile
Dose was Bob Woodwell. Congrats, Bob!
Consider sharing with Going Places readers your experiences
with your car or with club events. You might put a smile on
someone’s face, and you just might get a free dinner. Going
Places is by YOU, and for YOU!
Just FYI, the website is still very functional for looking at,
RSVPing for, and paying for, events. There is currently no
“log in” feature, but if you click the link in each event to
Motorsporstreg, you will be able to handle the details for each
event. If you haven’t done so lately, check out the events under
the events button on the website az.pca.org. More are being
added regularly.
You probably have noticed that we do get a pretty good
selection of articles most months. These are enjoyable to read
and contain fun and interesting details. To encourage more of
these creative articles, and to increase coverage of club events,
we have started the Writer’s Drawing. The drawing will be done
at each monthly meeting and will include writers from the most
recently published issue of Going Places. One name will be
drawn, and that person will receive a complimentary dinner at
a future monthly meeting. The winner of the drawing at Daily

AUTOCROSS #9
RESULTS
by Kim Kemper and Rick Althouse
H
ere are the results for the Autocross on
May 9, 2015. What a fantastic day - March
temperatures in May! We had a great turn-out and
quite a few new auto-crossers.
With all of the instructing, I felt like a kid at the
roller coaster in an amusement park - with no
lines! Congratulations to Dennis Riehle for setting
Top Time Of Day with a scorching run.
Thanks to everyone who pitched in to set up and
tear down the course! Your help is crucial for us
running these events. We are taking a break for
the summer months. Hope to see everyone again
next season when we start up in September.
Enjoy your summer!
Best Regards,
Rick & Kim

Tech Tips
PORSCHE TWO-SEATER FOUR-DOOR??
by Scott McIlvain
M
y wife, myself, and our two giant dogs have been spoiled by the
room that our little PT Cruiser provided with the rear seats removed.
Whether hauling sets of wheels and tires to the track, large pieces of wood or
taking the two dogs to the dog park, the PT was always up to the challenge.
Now that we are a two Cayenne family (04 S & 05 Turbo) we needed a car
that could be used to haul stuff around. I started out putting the rear seats
down and quickly found that without moving the front seats forward, the
rear seats folded would not work. So, I thought, why do I need the rear seats
anyway. If we need to drive someone around, we will just take the turbo
(nice problem to
have).
So you can
see from the
final product,
removing the
rear seats frees
up a lot of space
for cargo and
is completely
reversible.
So we started
with folding the
seat bases up and
removing the bolts
that hold the seat
bracket to the
chassis.
Next we removed
the seat belt
buckle receptacle
and the seat backs.
Now that the seats
are removed, we
came up with a
plan to pad and
carpet the exposed areas. A quick trip to Walmart and I discovered an area
rug that was about the size
I needed with a color that
was close to matching the
rest of the interior.
I can get two sets of wheel and tires in the back and the dogs are happy
they have some space to move around.
I used a set of tin snips to
cut it to size. Before I put
the newly trimmed carpet
in for the last time, I put a
few old yoga mats down
for padding.
If you have any questions about this or any tech article or have ideas
for future articles please email me at [email protected].

MEET KIM KEMPER, AZPCA SECRETARY
by Susan Bookspan
photos submitted by Kim Kemper
A
nyone who knows Kim Kemper knows his true passion (besides
wife Ellen, three children, one grandson and two Australian
Shepherds) is auto cross (AX). Our club auto cross is top notch because
Kim is in charge (with AX partner, Rick Althouse).
Kim was born
in Cincinnati,
Ohio, grow
up in the
south side of
Chicago and
went to high
school and
college in
Dayton, Ohio
and law school
in Cincinnati.
The Kemper
family has
been
in
Arizona for 13
years, moving
from Salt
Lake City.
They also
spent time
in Denver,
D a y t o n ,
Cincinnati
and parts
of Indiana.
Cincinnati was a favorite with its famous Skyline Chili. Now you
can buy Skyline Chili right here in Arizona at Fry’s. Another of
Kim’s mid-west favorites is the “aluminum room” hamburgers from
White Castle.
Kim, a corporate attorney, retired on May 1st this year from Henkel,
a German company that owns Loctite, Dial and other companies.
Kim and Ellen have been
married since 1980 and have
three children. Oldest son Kyle
is married to Andrea and they
have a son Kellen and live in
Dallas. Daughter Katherine
married to an EMT and recently
graduated from ASU with a
doctorate degree in medicine.
Katherine’s twin brother Joel is
proposing to his girl friend on
an upcoming trip to Las Vegas.
This is a special surprise, so
we hope this happens before
this article is published. (See
photo at left of Joel and Jo!)
Katherine has a car fetish like
her father, while Kyle prefers mountain bikes and Joel is about all
getting great MPG.
began. He also bought a 2014 Cayman S which was traded in for a
2014 GT3 in Guards Red (of course) and a 2015 Chevy Silverado
that he uses as a tow vehicle, Kim has previously owned and raced
Corvettes and we understand he has a 2016 Corvette Z06 on order
(red again, of course).
Kim’s favorite PCA activity is autocross. Drivers Ed is OK, but it’s not
AX! Kim also races SCCA and he still competes at local Corvette Club
AX events. He has driven at Road Atlanta, Roebling Road, Sebring,
and Mid Ohio.
The Kempers are
looking forward
to a driving trip
in Germany this
fall. They will be
driving through
Germany for two
weeks in a new
911, with the last
two days at the
Porsche Museum
and 911 assembly/
manufacturing
site. Lots of PCA

made, parked in the brilliant alpine sunlight. A real “photo op,”, and a lot
of head turning from other patrons.
Our May Sunday ride had most of the ingredients. Clear blue skies, 74
F temperature, nineteen pristine Porsches and the twisting Bee Line
highway up from the Scottsdale valley floor to the, 6,000 feet above
sea level mountain town of Payson.
Gerardo’s Firewood Café is a highly recommended Italian family restaurant and they made us very welcome. Forty hungry Arizona Region PCA
members sat down to a four course pre arranged meal allowing us all to
sample two types of Pizza, two different salads, two meat and pasta dishes
and dessert. They make their own Italian sausage in house! All ingredients were fresh and delicious.
magine driving your Porsche on a beautiful clear sunny day up into
the Dolomites for lunch at a welcoming Italian restaurant. Well, with
a bit of mind juggling it was close!
Finally the dessert. Canolli of course and Zeppole mini donuts. It was a
gastronomic Tour de Force, with many tastes new to me. Very tasty and
satisfying. Molto Bene!
The owner, and his very friendly staff came to our tables and thanked us
for coming. A nice touch. They received a well earned round of applause
of course.
What a fantastic road, and the vistas that take your breath away. The
well divided two lane highway snakes up through the mountains offering expansive views of terrain covered with rocky formations, tall
Sagauro cactus and yellow blossomed Palo Verde trees. As we neared
Payson we could even see snow on the towering Mogollon rim of the

day.

Everyone drove at chosen speed but surprisingly we all seemed to arrive at the restaurant after the sixty mile spin pretty much together.
What a sight the wide selection of colors and models of Porsches

CHARITY PARTNER:
Our 2015 Charity partner is the Disabled American Veterans
Department of Arizona (www.azdav.com). This association is
very highly rated. All of our donations will stay within the state
of Arizona and 100% of our donations will go to veterans.
The AZ Commander will attend our Concours and they will
have a representative at the banquet.
Donations will be made through a Silent Auction held at the
Saturday night banquet. Please see the box at right for more
information!
Concours: We need helpers for many jobs at
the concours. These include scoresheet runners,
timers, and parking assistants. Contact Jack Aman
at [email protected] to get more information.
Silent Auction: We need volunteers to set up the
day of the banquet, but MOST IMPORTANTLY we
need your donations of items for the auction! It’s
not too early to start getting these. Think of asking
every restaurant, nail salon, beauty shop, exercise
studio and so on that you patronize to donate an
item or a gift card that can be auctioned. Consider
something you could personally donate, such as
a framed photograph or other artwork, or a new,
never-used small appliance still in the box. The item
does NOT have to be Porsche related, although it
can be. Contact Gary Solem at [email protected]

UNBRIDLED EXCESS
by Danielle Badler
I
’ve been thinking a lot lately about unbridled excess.
What got me started were news reports about the spring art auction
season in New York, where a record was set for the most expensive
work of art ever sold at auction… a Picasso painting called Les
Femmes d’Alger (Version “O”). For $179.4 million.
That was followed by the most expensive sculpture, Giacometti’s
L’Homme au Doigt, which went for $141.3 million.
According to the e-newsletter Quartz, the dizzying prices are being
driven, at least in part, by Asian and Russian billionaires… and
tactics by the auction houses to offer price guarantees to the owners.
Quartz says us mere mortals shouldn’t worry. Only a small, closed
club of super-rich can play. And the bidding is a way for them to
boost their “prestige.” Or, put another way, it’s a way for them
to say to each other that theirs is bigger than yours, or mine, or
anyone else’s.
The money, itself, really doesn’t mean anything. Which is hard
to fathom. But it’s not unlike Jeff Bezos spending $200 million
to buy the Washington Post. I mean, he wrote a check.
No, Quartz points out, the real shame is that the higher the prices
go, the greater the likelihood that the paintings will vanish into
private homes or, heaven forbid, secure warehouses, rarely to be
seen again. Which is why the artists made them in the first place.
It’s not unlike the collector car market, is it?
I recall reading about Ralph Lauren’s Bugatti Type 57SC, about
how, if they run it for longer than, maybe, a few minutes, the engine
has to be completely re-detailed.
How much longer will we see a Ferrari 250 GTO actually moving
under its own power? Or even see one at all? If the market rate for
one today is plus or minus $50 million, and climbing, how much
longer until they, too, will be sequestered in giant safes?.
Or a Bugatti Royale? Or any blue chip classic? And if that’s the
start of the trend, how soon will it trickle down to your run of the
mill Gullwing? Or 427 Cobra? Or 917?
No, beyond a certain point, classic cars in private collections will
be locked away, just like paintings, in private warehouses. Waiting
for another oligarch with unlimited funds to come along and move
it to their private warehouse.
watched the video, through Mo-torAuthority, which got it from
SupercarDRIVER.
And the guy provides a commentary on the video, about the
similarities and differences between the vehicles, and what it’s
like to be behind the wheel.
According to MotorAuthority, Bailey and his wife were co-owners
of a communications company that they sold for north of $40
million.
Yeah, that’s not pocket change. But it’s hardly enough to raise a
paddle for a 250 GTO, or a Picasso.
The article says Bailey “does his best to share (his cars) with the
world in videos like these. Bailey is also a member of a group
that raffles off rides in his cars, and the mon-ey supports worthy
causes.”
Well, that’s special. But why do I have this vague discomfort about
the whole thing? What am I supposed to think? Jealousy? Envy?
Sure, he’s giving back, but aren’t his actions a bit over the top?
And, speaking of over the top, take the annual fund-raising dinner
for the Robin Hood Foundation in New York.
Do you know about that event? Each year it sets a record for the
amount of money col-lected for a “worthy cause” in one night.
Because the audience is all hedge fund gazil-lionaires, people who
can write a seven or eight figure check and not think twice about
it. So bully for them.
I had a brush with it all, a few years ago. I was walking along
and I saw -- no, I heard this sound -- I turned, and there it was,
a Bugatti Veyron, in motion. I followed, on foot, and saw that it
was pulling up to a hotel.
By the time I got up to the car, triple black, there was no driver in
sight. I asked the doorman, who was driving? I fully expected the
name of some sports or rock celebrity.
But he shrugged. He answered, this way, exactly: “ Just some guy.
Who went on into the hotel.”
What do you know. Some guy. Some rich guy.
What a shame.
But then there’s this guy, Paul Bailey. He’s a Brit. First he bought a
McLaren P1. Then he drove it to pick up a Ferrari La Ferrari. And
then, together with his wife, he drove over to pick up a Porsche
918 Spyder as well.
That’s right, all in the same day. The trifecta of modern supercars.
And he videotaped the whole thing. How do I know? I
