Pike Lake’s disc golf course is another highly rated gem. Nearby courses at Paint Creek and Rocky Fork are also big winners with players. Courses at Wingfoot Lake and Portage Lakes are fun and refreshing expanses of green for city dwellers who pine for fresh air and exercise. Grab the discs, the clubs, and the whole family for a trip they will all love to Punderson‘s disc course and 18-hole golf course next door. Can’t get enough disc golf? Try the challenging 36 holes at Hueston Woods, and top off the day with a friendly paintball battle. Ride a Bike • • • • • Home The paved trail at Blackhand Gorge Nature Preserve near Dillon winds for 4 miles (8 round trip) along the Licking River’s scenic cliffs. At Mohican, mountain bikers can plunge through 25 miles of epic forest trail or cruise along the 3-mile paved trail to town. Volunteers keep improving the trails at John Bryan to ensure a memorable ride for mountain bikers of all levels of skill and stamina. The Little Miami Trail, one of the longest paved trail corridors in the country, spans four counties along the scenic Little Miami River. Strouds Run offers 26 miles of mountain bike trials that loop and wind through woods and meadows. Welcome Where to Go • • Climb the rugged trail up Great Seal’s Mt. Ives and behold the vistas that inspired Ohio’s founding fathers and the official state seal. Trek in the footsteps of the Worldwalker on East Fork’s 32-mile perimeter backpacking trail, or pick a shorter trail for a day trip. Lake Hope offers short, medium and long trails on scenic hills and hollows. See if you can spy rock shelter caves, but stay on the trail! Malabar Farm’s pretty pastoral setting is perfect for a relaxing country stroll, an invigorating woodland walk or a lazy drive up Mt. Jeez. Trails at Barkcamp, Hocking Hills’ Ash Cave, Lake Milton, Maumee Bay and Quail Hollow are great for visitors in wheelchairs or strollers. Paddle or Tack • • • • • The glassy water at Dillon is ideal for placid paddling. For a rowing workout, rent a canoe or kayak to explore Salt Fork’s countless coves. Findley’s 93 acre lake is friendly to casual canoeing fans. At 14,000 acres, sprawling Pymatuning Lake appeals to energetic rowers. Tranquil Kiser Lake and its nearby wetlands create the perfect environment for a relaxing canoe excursion accented by wildlife sightings. The Alum Creek Sailing Association offers lessons for newbies, and Old Salts can rent sailboats at Alum Creek and Hueston Woods marinas. Private liveries near Beaver Creek, Blackhand Gorge (by Dillon), Caesar Creek and Mohican have all the gear for trips down scenic rivers. For more great ideas visit us online www.ohiostateparks.org Learning to canoe! What to Do Expert Tips Map Parks Index Expert Tips Looking for a lake escape? East Harbor is a fun place to camp, and it’s also a handy and affordable home base for Lake Erie adventures. It’s close to the ferry to the Lake Erie islands, world famous Cedar Point amusement park, Marblehead Lighthouse and local wineries. From Pat Quackenbush, Park Naturalist Think you’ve seen it all at Hocking Hills? Join us on a monthly Hidden Hocking tour and discover some little-known wonders on trails less traveled, like Broken Rock Falls and Rose Lake. See the naturalist schedule for dates and details. Into history? Catch an event at Caesar Creek’s pioneer village. Climb Marblehead Lighthouse and tour the Keeper’s House. Visit Mohican’s restored grist mill. Wander around Hueston Woods’ pioneer farm or Beaver Creek’s pioneer village. Tour Salt Fork’s Kennedy Stone House. From Charlotte McCurdy, Park Manager While you’re visiting Quail Hollow or Wingfoot, leave civilization behind and take a detour to nearby Jackson Lake Bog Nature Preserve. This wild landscape is actually a fen wetland, home to bizarre insect-eating pitcher plants and round leaved sundew. From Dave Sapienza, Park Naturalist Fancy things with wings? Try hand feeding hummingbirds at Lake Hope’s nature center. Visit the butterfly house at Maumee Bay and the butterfly gazebo at Van Buren, and help band monarchs. Feel the joy of being surrounded by songbirds at Malabar Farm’s aviary. Hand feeding hummingbirds People say Lake Hope’s Moonville Tunnel is haunted. Check it out on your own or with the weekly naturalist-led tour. The old railroad tunnel is about 3 miles from the Lake Hope dam and 1/4 mile down a trail. Soon it will be part of the local rail trail system. Looking for adventure? Wildlife watching is one of life’s greatest pleasures, and a great thrill for kids. Ohio State Parks are great places to observe Ohio’s fauna in the woods and on the water. Try rock climbing at Paint Creek’s Harmony Trail and Spillway Wall, but first, contact the Corps of Engineers for information. Rent a horse at Hueston Woods and explore the park’s bridle trails. Check out the changes at Burr Oak, an adventure park in the making! Planning a get-together with a group? Consider our 2-bedroom cottages, or book Lake Hope’s Laurel Lodge or Pike Lake’s Group Lodge for dorm style sleeping (16 & 22, respectively), roomy living area and complete kitchen to cook for a crowd. Historic Harding Cabin at Deer Creek sleeps 8 in style. Whoooooo’s Out There? Home Welcome Where to Go What to Do Southern flying squirrel Bluegill sunfish Bullfrog Although seldom seen, this is Ohio’s most common squirrel! That bump in the night just might be this nocturnal critter landing on your tent. The bluegill sunfish is found in nearly every Ohio lake. It may be common, but for any kid catching their first one, every bluegill is extraordinary! The bullfrog blends in so well you have to sneak up to catch a glimpse before it leaps in the water, but you can’t miss its loud “jug-o-rum” croak!
