WINTER 2007/2008 FALL/WINTER 2006 GREENSBORO GRIMSLEY GENERATIONS NEWSLETTER bringing Alumni together Support Your School Through … Generations 2008 Once again, it is my honor and privilege to kickoff our Generations Annual Fund campaign by thanking you for your generous support over the past years. Your Alumni Association connects with you in so many ways, and we truly appreciate your support of our many activities on behalf of our excellent school! Our activities continue to focus on using your generous contributions responsibly and effectively, promoting excellence in the arts, academics and athletics, and working hard in support of the students, faculty and alumni of Grimsley. Included with this newsletter is a pledge card (see back page) and return envelope, which hopefully will make it easy for you to make your contribution to this year’s campaign. In the past year, we have again awarded our student and special scholarships, faculty grants, and teacher of the year award. We have also been able to add funds to our Endowment fund, while establishing new scholarships founded by our fantastic alumni and administered through our organization. In addition to our usual support for such events as Project Graduation and the Senior Tea, we’ve also provided funding help for projects like gifts to the Media Center for books, water testing kits for our science classes, new trees for Jamieson Stadium, new ROTC textbooks, funds for new Whirlie logos around campus, and an LCD projector for multi-media presentations, to name just a few. Importantly, we were able to provide greatly needed and appreciated funds for Grimsley DECA as you’ll see in this newsletter. This monetary support for DECA was a wonderful example of our funding goals, as it allowed Marketing teacher Atiba Bethea the means to provide financial assistance to nearly half of his students, allowing them to attend and compete successfully at the NC Career Development Conference. As we launch our 2008 campaign, with your support we continue to build our reserves, fund our scholarship obligations, and look to take on even more worthwhile projects. We will continue to expand our Generations Annual Fund efforts and ask for your help in spreading the word about this campaign to all of your fellow Grimsley alumni and parents. Grimsley High School is recognized locally and regionally as a “school of distinction”, a model of success for the community, again one of Newsweek’s Top 100 high schools in America, and is highly respected by colleges and universities around the country. Your connection to Grimsley is something you can be extremely proud of. We hope that this sense of pride, your memories, and your gratitude will encourage you to help us improve and grow, to continue the traditions of Grimsley through your support of our Generations Annual Fund! Sincerely, Rick Andringa Alumni Association President IN THIS NEWSLETTER Scholarships ......................................... 2-3 Grimsley DECA .........................................4 Endowment ...............................................4 New Gym Banners ...................................4 Eula Tuttle Portrait ....................................5 Accomplishments......................................6 Donors.................................................. 7-11 Comer Dedication ..................................11 Sports Update ...................................12-13 Principal Fleming ....................................13 Memories of GHS ...................................14 Athletic Boosters ....................................15 Board Members . ....................................15 Harris Teeter ............................................15 Share Your News ....................................16 Grimsley Ranked Tops in Area … Again! Congratulations again to the Grimsley administration, faculty, staff and especially to our outstanding students who keep us always at the head of the class when it comes to local education! 1 Grimsley Student Scholarships The Alumni and Friends Association takes great pride and pleasureinbothawardingannualscholarshipsandinselecting thewinnersforotherGrimsleyscholarshipprograms.Wealso present cash awards to two teachers annually. Kaylin Burns Larry Saunders Award Durante Griffin Teacher Awards Each year the faculty names a Teacher of the Year to whom the Association gives a $ 2500 award. These funds help serve as a stipend for these teachers who perform extra duties for which there is no remuneration. Teresa Whiting was the 2007 recipient. The Class of 1982 established a $ 500 award annually for a math or science teacher. The recipient of this teaching excellence award is chosen by both departments. Durante Griffin who taught all the Physics classes and Physical Science until his retirement in January of 2008 is the 2007 winner of the Larry Saunders Award for Math and Science. Mr. Griffin also coached both men’s and women’s swimming for over 20 years and is the son-in-law of Mr. R.L. (Lody) Glenn, the beloved principal. Teacher of the Year Teresa Whiting Kevin Fleming Grimsley’s Not So New Principal In July, 2007 Kevin F. Fleming became the 23rd principal since 1899 at Greensboro Grimsley High School, replacing interim principal, John Eldgridge. Mr. Fleming came to Grimsley after serving as Principal at Fallston High School in Fallston, Maryland. Mr. Fleming has come to Grimsley at one of its most challenging times and hopes to bring both stability and opportunities to the students who call it home. He wants the seniors, the Class of 2008, in particular, to have the same respect and appreciation for the institution of Greensboro Grimsley Senior High School that so many of the old and new alumni have always had. Mr. Fleming has shared with the Alumni Association that he greatly enjoyed both his high school years along with the years he spent as a high school principal and hopes to bring that love of the institution of high school to his job at Grimsley. He took the job here initially because of his attraction to the age and history surrounding Grimsley. His appreciation of our history has made him the perfect candidate to move Grimsley into its next phase of development. Keving Fleming hopes to continue reaching new standards of excellence along with implementing new programs including senior projects, advisees and master tutors. He has been most impressed with the student body and faculty of our school. He likes the joy he sees in the morning and the respect that the faculty, staff and students show for one another throughout the day. He has seen in one short semester what those of us who love Grimsley have known all along: it is a great place to learn and grow and that feeling remains with you the rest of your life. Mr. Fleming is married and has one daughter, Jennifer, along with a grandson, Colin. www.whirlies.com BE A PART OF GHS SPORTS HISTORY Grimsley DECA Showcases Students! In a letter to the GHSAA and the PTSA, Mr. Atiba Bethea, GHS Marketing Teacher and DECA Advisor, thanks the groups for their support in 2007 … DECA is an association for marketing and entrepreneurial students sponsored by the Department of Education: “I’m truly excited and humbled to be able to update you on the success of Grimsley DECA at this year’s state competition. Your contributions allowed us to be able to provide financial assistance to 9 of the 21 students that registered to attend this competitive events conference. Our school was definitely well represented, with 15 of our student attendees receiving Proficiency Awards in their respective events, and Grimsley DECA receiving the Silver Chapter Award for this year’s program of work. We were the only chapter in the Triad Area, which spans from Davie County to Wake County and up to the Virginia border, to receive this prestigious Silver Award. You should also know that your contributions led to the crowning of Grimsley’s 1st ever State Champion … Ms. Victoria Collins walked away from this conference as the 1st place winner in the Employability Skills Associate Level (ESAL) category. Without your assistance, she would not have had the opportunity to show the NC DECA what she was made of. Grimsley DECA truly appreciates the monetary support received from the Alumni Association and PTSA groups. The memories that you helped my students to create are priceless, and we look forward to working with both organizations in the future!” Help Us Build our Endowment! Two years ago, the Board of the Grimsley Alumni Association voted to establish an endowment fund and adopted as a goal of the Association the annual allocation to that fund from general revenues of at least $10,000. In early 2006, the Association partnered with the Community Foundation of Greater Greensboro (CFGG) in the formation of the Grimsley Alumni Association Endowment Fund (Fund), with $10,000 from the Association’s 2005 budget employed to open that Fund. This amount has been supplemented with additional contributions each year since. CFGG, through the Fund, offers the Association expert financial management at a reasonable cost. The Fund is combined with other funds of CFGG for investment purposes and allocated its pro rata share of the investment income, net of an investment fee. Economies of scale result in more favorable returns and more reasonable management fees. With the consent of the founders of those funds, the Association has also established with CFGG (1) the Grimsley Melvin G. Coleman Scholarship Endowment Fund and (2) the Grimsley Larry Saunders Teaching Award Fund, which awards are annually determined and announced by the Association. If you would like to contribute to any of these funds, please make your check payable to the “Greensboro Grimsley High School Alumni Association,” mark it for the “Endowment Fund,” “Coleman Scholarship Fund,” or “Saunders Teaching Award Fund” and mail it to GHS Alumni and Friends Association, P. O. Box 4248, Greensboro, NC 27404-4240. www.whirlies.com Carol W Martin/Greensboro Historical Museum Collection Plans are underway to produce and hang new banners in the Robert R. Sawyer ‘55 Gymnasium, representing our 95 state championship teams and five Wachovia Cup wins! Our goal is not only to honor these teams, but also to inspire current and future Whirlie athletes. The planned installation will include 62 banners, with championships listed chronologically beginning with our first football championship in 1907. The design for the banners as well as the installation will allow for our future titles to be added easily. The impact will be terrific … but we need YOUR help to make this project happen! The total cost for the banners will be approximately $12,000, and you can honor with your gift ANY GHS team or teams, player, or coach you wish … it does not have to be only one of the state championship teams … choose a full-banner sponsorship for $170, a halfbanner sponsorship for $85, a quarterbanner sponsorship for $45, or a oneeighth-banner sponsorship for $25. While the banners will include only the state championship teams and Wachovia Cup wins, the specific team(s) or person you choose to honor will be included in all acknowledgments. To help sponsor this project with a tax-deductible donation, please make checks out to “GHS Alumni Association,” with “Gym Banners Fund” on the memoria line. Please include the name(s) or team(s) you wish to honor. IMPORTANT: Please send checks to: Alicia Neese Irvin ‘79 (Mrs. David), 2707 West Market Street, Greensboro, North Carolina 27403 Tuttle Portrait Planned Adding to our impressive portraits recognizing Herbert Hazelman (GHS Band Director from 1936-1942 & 19441978) and J. Kimball Harriman (GHS Orchestra Director from 1941-1964), an effort is now underway to recognize Eula Tuttle, GHS’s extraordinary Choral Director from 1943-1966, with her own portrait! A committee has organized a fundraising effort to enable “Tuttle’s” portrait to be painted, with the cost expected to be over $8,000. We are again working with the well-known portrait artist Tom Edgerton, whose paintings are especially prized because of his ability to capture the personality of his subjects. Tom painted both the Hazelman and Harriman portraits for us as well, and he is looking forward now to completing the trio. Please consider making a tax-deductible donation to the Tuttle-portrait fund, as we need to have a sizeable number of donations in-hand as soon as possible. The Greensboro/Grimsley Senior High School Alumni Association has agreed to help us process our donations and assure their tax-deductibility, making it easy for you to contribute. You can make your Generations Campaign contributions in honor of someone you care about or as a memorial to an individual who has passed away. We ask you to clearly state your intent in writing when making your contribution, so we can list you not only in our list of donors but in our Memorials and In Honor Of sections. Thank you for considering this way to commemmorate people you would like remembered in a special way. Ruth and John Comer (Greensboro Senior High Class of 1952) and their 4 Grimsley graduates represent all that is good about public education. This family’s commitment to Greensboro Grimsley High School has always been and continues to be truly exceptional. For decades, they have been working to keep Grimsley one of the most outstanding high schools in North Carolina. Ruth and John began as many of us do, when their children were students here. But unlike many of us, they have continued volunteering for Grimsley over the 19 years since their last child graduated. The time and effort spent at Grimsley by the Comer Family is almost unimaginable … just remember they started volunteering at Grimsley before today’s students were even born! We have all been lucky that the Comers made Greensboro Grimsley a part of their family. In fact, Ruth and John have worked with and coordinated the efforts of countless thousands of volunteers. And in doing that, they have been the greatest role models for the spirit of school volunteerism that keeps Grimsley so special. The Comers truly are an inspiration to us all. For their service and love to our beloved Greensboro Grimsley High School, the Grimsley Alumni Association was pleased to dedicate the concessions building at the main entrance of Jamieson Stadium to the Comer Family. As thousands of people pass through our stadium gates … whether it be for the East West All Star Games, Fun Fourth, Special Olympics, Relay for Life, Greensboro College Football or just another night of Grimsley sports … we want all visitors to our school to celebrate their commitment. As you volunteer your time and treasure to Grimsley, we hope you will keep the Comers’ inspiration in mind! www.whirlies.com 11 Grimsley Sports . . . Going Strong! Reflecting on the 2007 fall and winter seasons, the Whirlies continued strong play in the conference and at the state level. TheMen’sSwimteamfinishedtheseasonundefeatedat5-0, placed first in the conference, fourth at the regionals and sixth at the state level. At press time, our Women’s Basketball team continues to burn up the nets with an undefeated record (a first for Grimsley basketball) and Little 4 Tournament Championship. Following lastyear’srecordsetting30-2recordandastaterunner-upfinish, Phil Weaver has his team primed for a run again. This is, without a doubt, the best Women’s basketball team in the rich history of Grimsley High School. We have four Division I signees on this team - Trumae Lucas, a first team all-state player (Florida), NicoleHargraves(Charlotte),JasmineAlston(Wilmington)and Krystin Fields (Towson St.). Our Men’s basketball team also placed first in the regular season league and has advanced to the conference tournament. The Whirlies soccer program under Coach Matt Martineau returned to dominance in the Metro Conference and went through the state playoffs to finish as 4A runner-up. Excitement was in the air about football with new coach Mark Saunders. The Whirlies had their third consecutive outstanding season posting an 11-2 record. Our volleyball, tennis and golf teams also capped off great seasons by advancing to the state playoffs. We should all be proud of our student-athletes. The amount of time theyspendbetweenacademicsandathleticsisamazing, andmanyhave jobs or other activities that require their attention, too. They represent their teams and our school with class. We look forward to telling you of our spring ’08 season and yearly award winners in our next newsletter. Thanks for your support of our Alumni Association and of Greensboro Grimsley Senior High. 12 www.whirlies.com Sports Awards Join the Booster Club Today! The McDaniel-Lewis Award, to the outstanding male athlete, went to Josh Stewart. Playing both quarterback and safety, Josh led the Whirlies football team to an undefeated regular season, coming back to play after a serious injury as a junior. This young man was a winner in every sense of the word! My time in high school revolved around athletics. As a three-year member of the varsity volleyball team and a four-year member of the varsity women’s basketball team, including three years as captain, I learned almost as much on the court as I did in the classroom. Although excited about what my future holds at Carolina, I’m taking with me memories and friendships from Grimsley that are sure to last a lifetime. After an extremely rough and interesting freshman year on the basketball team … when the team pulled-off a total of just seven wins … I leave Grimsley now with a basketball family that has accomplished feats that had never before been done at Grimsley. After a disappointing loss in 2006 to High Point Central in the second round of the state play-offs, our team entered the 2006-2007 season with the goal of a state-championship title. We finished the regular season with a record of 23-1, our only loss to Page in a non-conference game in overtime on a last-second shot. We were back-to-back undefeated champions of the Metro-4A Conference and two-time conference-tournament champions. The team was on a roll going into the 2007 state play-offs with our goal in sight. We cruised through the first games at home, won two big games in Winston-Salem, and were on our way to the state-championship game to be played in Chapel Hill. Grimsley had never had a women’s basketball team make it that far in the play-offs nor post such an impressive record at that point as ours at 30-1. Although we suffered a heart-breaking loss in the finals, I can think of no better way to end my basketball career than in the gym of my future school and with the people I love most in this world. Together for three years, my teammates became my family. There was never a dull moment when we were together, whether it was on the court, in the classroom, at pregame meals at my house or at restaurants, to team sleep-overs or karaoke at Ham’s. These girls are some of my best friends and have given me more memories than I could ever count. I am also proud to say that the Class of 2007 came together in a time of need, a few months before graduation. While a class full of little cliques, after the passing of one of our beloved classmates Trae Whittset, our class joined together to help each other through. Having Trae in three of my classes at the time, it was rough to comprehend that he was no longer with us. Making it even rougher was the fact that this was right in the middle of the basketball state play-offs. The day following his death, our team was to play in Winston in the regional semi-finals. Physically and emotionally drained by the end of the day, those of us on the team who were close with Trae were able to pull it together thanks to the support of our teammates and classmates who drove over for the game. Trae would have wanted us to bring it home and I know he was there watching us to make sure that we did. There is no other high school in the world I would have chosen as the place to live out my high school days. Grimsley will always hold a special place in my heart! 14 www.whirlies.com Greensboro Grimsley Alumni & Friends Association For more information or to contact your Alumni Association, please email us at [email protected].
