THE MESSIAH MESSENGER
VOLUME III, ISSUE II
WORD TO THE WORSHIPPER
“ ‘You’ turns are permitted”
Dr. Keith B. McGee I
“Let us test and examine our
ways, and return to
the Lord!”
Lamentations 3:40 (ESV)
A rich heritage gives way to modern ingenuity. African-American innovation is
rich with the contributions of famous black inventors like Elijah McCoy, Lewis
Howard Latimer, George Washington Carver and Madame C.J. Walker (Sarah
Breedlove). In fact, many modern conveniences and necessities are directly
related to, or derivative of, the inventions of black inventors: blood banks, the
refrigerator, the electric trolley, the dust pan, comb, mop, brush, clothes dryer,
lawn mower, traffic signals, and the pencil sharpener. Did African-Americans
just up and stop inventing? The answer, conclusively, is no. From colonial times
through today, Americans of African and Caribbean descent have contributed to
the advancement of medicine, physics, industrialization and plain old fun.
Listed on page six are a few African-American inventors and their inventions
from The Black Inventions Museum. You may recognize some of them. If not,
it is good to know their inventions.

♥ What Is The Difference between Heart Attack and Heart Failure? ♥
People are often confused when describing heart failure and heart attack, but these are two different medical conditions. Here
are a few differences between these two diseases.
Difference in Definition:
According to the National Heart Lung and Blood Institute, heart attack can be defined as:
“A heart attack occurs if the flow of oxygen-rich blood to a section of the heart muscle suddenly becomes blocked. If blood
flow isn’t restored quickly, the section of heart muscle begins to die.” It can also be defined as: “A heart attack occurs when
blood flow to a part of the heart is blocked for a long enough time that part of the heart muscle is damaged or dies.” According
to the American Heart Association heart failure can be defined as: “Heart failure is a chronic, progressive condition in which
the heart muscle is unable to pump enough blood through the heart to meet the body’s needs for blood and oxygen. Basically,
the heart can’t keep up with its workload.”
Difference in synonyms:
Heart attack is also called Myocardial Infarction (MI) whereas heart failure is called congestive heart failure (CHF) or
congestive cardiac failure (CCF).
Difference in Etiology:
The most common cause of heart attack is blood clot that deposit in coronary arteries of the heart. These arteries are
responsible for supplying oxygen and blood to the heart. If these arteries are blocked due to blood clot or plaque (hard mass
composed of cholesterol or other cells) then the heart is deprived from oxygen and dies.
There are different causes that can cause heart failure. Few of the causes are:
♥ Coronary artery disease ♥ Arrhythmia (supraventricular or ventricular) ♥ Diabetes Mellitus
♥ Infections and inflammation (myocarditis) ♥ Hypertension ♥ Peripartum cardiomyopathy
♥ Valvular heart disease (stenosis or regurgitant lesions) ♥ Congenital heart disease
Difference in Sign and Symptoms:
The most common symptom of a heart attack is mild to severe chest pain having the following characteristics:
♥ Something heavy sitting on your chest ♥ A light band around the chest ♥ Squeezing (heavy) pressure ♥ Bad indigestion
The duration of pain may last up to 20 minutes. Other symptoms are cough, fainting, shortness of breath (SOB), and sweating.
The signs and symptoms of heart failure may develop slowly or suddenly. Common symptoms are:
♥ Shortness of breath ♥ Desire of urination at night time ♥ Cough
♥ Swollen feet, liver ♥ Loss of appetite ♥ Weight gain
Difference in Who Is At Risk:
Risk factors for heart attack are:
♥ Smoking ♥ Lack of routine physical exercise ♥ Overweight and obesity ♥ High blood sugar due to insulin resistance or
diabetes ♥ High blood pressure ♥ High blood cholesterol ♥ An unhealthy diet (for example, a diet high in saturated fat, trans
fat, cholesterol, and sodium)
Risk factors for heart failure are:
♥ A person age 65 or over ♥ People who have had a heart attack
♥ Overweight or obese ♥ Children who are suffering from congenital heart defects
Difference in Diagnosis:
In the case of a heart attack, a troponin blood test is used to confirm whether the patient is suffering from a heart attack or not.
Other tests may include coronary angiography, exercise stress test, nuclear stress test and echocardiography. Echocardiogram
is the most common test to diagnose heart failure. Other tests that can also be conducted are cardiac stress tests, heart
catheterization and MRI of the heart.
Difference in Treatment:
If the patient suspects that he/she is suffering from a heart attack then the following treatment can be advised:
♥ Oxygen therapy ♥ Administering Nitroglycerine to reduce workload of heart ♥ Management of chest pain
Treatment for heart failure usually includes:
♥ Lifestyle changes ♥ Medicines ♥ On-going care

I greet you in the name of the only one who matters and that is in the name of
Jesus Christ. I am so excited over what God is doing with our youth department.
So many of our young people and young adults have answered the call. A call to
action inside the four walls of the church and outside the four walls of the church.
We are so excited that they are truly learning what ministry is all about and are
willing to give of themselves for kingdom building. As we enter into the year
2016, we look forward to so many great memories that will go down in history as
we move forward and connect with our youth. I challenge every parent to pay
attention to their children, listen to what they have to say so they understand that
they have you to come to in trying times. We truly understand that our children
are not only our future they are our TODAY! In Luke 18:16, Jesus called the
children to himself and said "Let the little children come unto me, and do not
hinder them, for the Kingdom of God belongs to such as these.

Why We Can't Wait (Letter from Birmingham Jail, April 16, 1963)
by Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
“Perhaps it is easy for those who have never felt the stinging darts of segregation to say, ‘Wait.’ But when you have seen
vicious mobs lynch your mothers and fathers at will and drown your sisters and brothers at whim…when you see the vast
majority of twenty million Negro brothers smothering in an airtight cage of poverty in the midst of an affluent society; when
you suddenly find your tongue twisted and your speech stammering as you seek to explain to your six-year-old daughter why
she can’t go to the public amusement park that has just been advertised on television, and see tears welling up in her eyes
when she is told that Funtown is closed to colored children, and see ominous clouds of inferiority beginning to form in her
little mental sky…when you take a cross-country drive and find it necessary to sleep night after night in the uncomfortable
corners of your automobile because no motel will accept you…when…your wife and mother are never given the respected
title ‘Mrs.’…when you are forever fighting a degenerating sense of ‘nobodiness’—then you will understand why we find it
difficult to wait. There comes a time when the cup of endurance runs over, and men are no longer willing to be plunged into
the abyss of despair.”
Getting Past What You'll Never Get Over: Help for Dealing with
Life's Hurts
by John F. Westfall
Westfall has an alternative for those grappling with the “rub some dirt on it” approach to dealing with pain and heartache.
Rather than suffer the dual insult of a painful experience and the inability to get over it, he suggests that we become
comfortable with the permanence of our wounds in order to truly come to terms with them. The founding pastor of Seattle’s
Harbor Church, Westfall walks readers through discussions on fear, bitterness, and other negative emotions that bind us to
past angst, in an easy, approachable manner. He draws upon a host of personal experiences culled from his own life and those
of his family members and friends to paint intimate portraits of how life’s hurts and disappointments can stymie us, and how
to make peace with them. Westfall is always careful to draw the reader’s attention back to scripture and its usefulness in
emotional problem solving, but he does so in a way that won’t scare off more secular readers. For those seeking a gentle, faith
-based approach to coping with trauma, this volume is just the thing. --Taina Lagodzinski
