O Canada
O Canada! Our home and native land!
True patriot love in all thy sons command.
With glowing hearts we see thee rise,
The True North strong and free!
From far and wide, O Canada,
We stand on guard for thee.
God keep our land, glorious and free!
O Canada, we stand on guard for thee;
O Canada, we stand on guard for thee.

Star Spangled Banner
Oh, say can you see by the dawn’s early light,
What so proudly we hailed at the twilight’s last gleaming.
Whose broad stripes and bright stars thru the perilous fight,
O’er the ramparts we watched were so gallantly streaming.
And the rocket’s red glare, the bombs bursting in air,
Gave proof through the night that our flag was still there.
Oh, say does that Star-Spangled Banner yet wave
O’er the land of the free and the home of the brave.

Director, Department of Culture
Dear ABA/JBA Members:
Congratulations to the 6th ABA/JBA Joint Convention in San Luis Obispo,
California organized by the American Bandmasters Association and the Japanese Band
Directors Association.
I understand that The American Bandmasters Association and the Japanese Band
Directors Association together aim to create, encourage, and promote better music and
performance activities for the purpose of exchanging mutual values between our
associations including the bridging of the generation gap after more than 20 years since
the last joint convention.
I hope that both non-profit organizations will continue to benefit the wind bands
in both countries.
As the Director of Department of Culture, Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports,
Science and Technology, I would like to express my sincere respect for the efforts by all
concerned who have rendered services for the event, and I pray for the success of the
convention and more development of the cultural exchange between the United States of
America and Japan.
Sincerely yours,
Masanori Aoyagi

WELCOME FROM TERRY AUSTIN, PRESIDENT
Dear ABA and JBA friends:
On behalf of Bill and Pamela Johnson and Tracia and me, welcome (back) to beautiful San Luis Obispo.
Those of you who were here in 2007 remember what a wonderful convention we had then, and this one should be
an even greater gathering of friends, old and new. Tracia and I have been looking forward to this since it was
announced that we would once again return to the central coast of California. I have very special memories from
our last trip here, for it was at the final meeting of 2007 that I was first elected to the Board of Directors—a path
that has led to this convention as president of this organization that we all love so much. I like the symmetry of
that.
What a difference a year makes! This time last year I had just been diagnosed with cancer. Today I am
cancer free, and I feel better than I have in a very long time. I can’t begin to thank you for your kindness during
last year’s tribulations. The number of cards, letters, Facebook messages, emails, gifts, phone calls, and prayers
was overwhelming. It is humbling to know that so many people of whom you think so highly are keeping you in
their thoughts and prayers.
Bill and Pamela Johnson have worked very hard to make sure that you have a fantastic convention. As
many of you know, Tracia and I and our close friends Dennis and Carol Zeisler hosted two conventions;
therefore, we know how much planning and work go into making an event like this happen. It is a LOT of work!
We appreciate their efforts on behalf of the ABA, but even more, we are bound together in a friendship that I
treasure. Please take time to thank both when you see them. I also want to recognize The California State
Polytechnic University-San Luis Obispo band program, its Director of Bands Andrew McMahan, and especially
the award-winning Iota Pi chapter of Kappa Kappa Psi for the tremendous amount of help they have given.
It is an honor to have our Japanese friends join us for the sixth time. JBA Honorary Life President, Toshio
Akiyama, and JBA International Relations Chair, Toru Miura, have worked tirelessly to make possible this joint
convention. Richard Mayne, ABA International Relations Chair, also helped with their efforts. Likewise, Ray
Cramer gave patient guidance, advice, and much support. It has been a massive undertaking for everyone
involved.
I also want to thank the numerous people and companies who have donated money to either the Harris
Fund or to the convention directly. These conventions have become very expensive, and it is the generosity of
members that enables us to enjoy coffee breaks, receptions, and other amenities without having to increase fees.
Please accept my sincere gratitude to all who generously gave to make this convention even more memorable.
None of us would be here without the support of our friends and mentors. Every year at the banquet I find
the men who sponsored me for membership into this, the greatest of all band organizations. And so, to the people
who have done so much for me—John Bourgeois, Ed Lisk, Jeff Bianchi and my dear, dear friend and mentor, Ray
Cramer, I say thank you for believing in me. I wish that Fred Ebbs could have been here, for he meant so much to
me as a young music student and band director. I think he would have been proud. I am honored beyond words to
serve as president of the American Bandmasters Association.
Our best wishes for a convention filled with friendship and great memories.
Terry Austin, President

WELCOME FROM OUR HOSTS
BILL AND PAMELA JOHNSON
Dear Fellow Members of ABA and Members of JBA,
It is with much pleasure and excitement that Pamela and I welcome you to “The
Happiest City in America,” San Luis Obispo, California, population approximately
45,000 people. The city is located almost exactly between Los Angeles and San
Francisco, at the heart of the beautiful Central Coast. The 82nd convention - California
Dreamin’ - is the second time ABA has met in San Luis Obispo, the first time being 2007
for the 73rd convention.
The rolling hills, the volcanic peaks, the nearby Pacific Ocean, a university of
20,000 students, the historical Old Mission Church, the quaint downtown, our famous
wineries and the community’s world-class concert hall all go together to make this an
ideal escape, a location full of people who will welcome you with open arms and a
university band fraternity that will do whatever it takes to make your visit both
comfortable and inspirational.
All of us are thrilled that a delegation from the Japanese Band Directors
Association and two outstanding wind bands from Japan have joined ABA for a
combined ABA/JBA convention. We say welcome (
) to our friends from Asia. We
are honored that you have chosen this convention to continue the long-standing tradition
of ABA/JBA joint conventions.
We extend a very special welcome to those of you who are attending an ABA
convention for the first time. We are confident that you will quickly become a member
of our musical family. We know that you will soon develop life-long friendships as we
all enjoy our receptions, our meals together, our meetings, our excursions, and our
concerts as we strive to “enhance the concert band and its music within our cultural
heritage.”
Warm regards,
Bill and Pamela Johnson

THE AMERICAN BANDMASTERS ASSOCIATION – A BRIEF HISTORY
Edwin Franko Goldman’s concept that later developed into The American Bandmasters Association originated in
the 1920s as a result of his experiences and observations in the world of professional music making. Goldman’s
importance was significant in that his ultimate fame came as head of the Goldman Band. The ABA’s formal organization
took place at a meeting in New York City on July 5, 1929. Those in attendance named John Philip Sousa the
organization’s first Honorary Life President. Incorporation followed in New York State on March 13, 1930. On that same
date, the First Annual Convention took place in Middletown, Ohio, under the sponsorship of the American Rolling Mill
Company with Frank Simon and his band as hosts.
The original constitution of The American Bandmasters Association states: "The object of this organization shall be
mutual helpfulness and the promotion of better music through the instrumentality of the concert band. To this end the
Association will strive to secure the adoption of a universal band instrumentation so that the band publications of all
countries will be interchangeable, to induce prominent composers of all countries to write in the larger forms for bands, to
establish for the concert band a higher standard of artistic recognition which it rightfully merits."
From the Association’s beginning, the emphasis has been on "mutual helpfulness," and the first convention began
with meaningful implementation of this concept. In 1930, the roster of The American Bandmasters Association included
34 active members and eight associate members. Annual conventions were held on a regular basis from 1930 through
1941, and an impressive record of achievement soon became apparent. The advent of World War II brought about an
interruption of all normal activities, and no further conventions were held for a period of five years. During that time,
many ABA members served with great distinction in the various theatres of the world. Annual meetings resumed in 1947
in Elkhart, Indiana, and have taken place annually to date.
The American Bandmasters Association has kept pace with changing times; however, its principles have never
been compromised. Its constitution continues to stress helpfulness and fellowship among members and calls for the
recognition of outstanding achievement in the field of the concert band. The Association is an honorary organization for
concert band conductors and composers of distinction and is recognized as such throughout the world.
In addition to providing a forum for closer contact between leading members of the profession, the impact of
the Association has been felt through a number of laudable efforts of historic value and artistic merit. The
following should be mentioned: the establishment of a standard instrumentation for American bands; the promotion
of original concert band works through commissions and competitions; the creation of The American Bandmasters
Association Research Center at the University of Maryland; the initiation of the Journal of Band Research, published
by Troy State University (Alabama); and the incorporation of The American Bandmasters Association Foundation,
Inc., which supports new concert band composition contests (the Sousa/Ostwald Award being the most significant) and
other worthy ABA projects. Also to be noted are the Sousa Memorial Stage at the Kennedy Center and the election of
John Philip Sousa to the Hall of Fame for Great Americans. The Association recognizes professional contributions by
people who are not conductors or composers with the Edwin Franko Goldman Citation of Excellence.
The annual conventions of The American Bandmasters Association are truly gala occasions, combining glittering
social events, significant professional gatherings, and superb performances. On occasion The American Bandmasters
Association has been the host to members and performing organizations from the Japanese Band Directors Association. A
complete list of the conventions is included in this program. In each case the list includes the convention location and
dates and the name of the president elected for the ensuing year.

THE JAPANESE BAND DIRECTORS ASSOCIATION
A BRIEF HISTORY
As an overview of the activities of the JBA, one must consider its all-Asia significance in the Asia Pacific Band
Directors Association (APBDA). The following are examples: the 8th biennial APBDA Conference in Hamamatsu,
Japan; the 7th WASBE conference; and the 9th and 10th APBDA Conferences in Hong Kong and Sydney. Of special
significance is the 2000 invitation of Yeh Shu-Han, chairman of the organizing committee for the 11th APBDA
Conference in Chaiyi, Taiwan, to Frederick Fennell, Roger Boutry, Alfred Reed, and Toshio Akiyama to conduct the
Tokyo Kosei Wind Orchestra.
President Eiji Sugiyama served for the JBA Millennium Conference, and in June 2000, president Sugiyama
established the *JBA as a corporation. During the tenure of President Genba Fujita (2002-2006), the JBA organized the
12th APBDA in Guangzou, China and the 13th in Jeju, Korea. Subsequently, Eiichi Toyama, President (2006-2010),
organized the 14th APBDA in Macau and the 15th in Tainan. During the presidency of Tatsujiro Sawano (2010-2014), the
JBA coordinated the 16th in Hong Kong and the 17th in Singapore.
Other accomplishments during the Sawano presidency include the moving of the annual Solo Competition for
High-School Students from Hamamatsu to Tokyo and the reorganizing of **The Public Benefit Corporation-JBA.
Elected in 2014, the current President, Hisatoshi Muta, is now planning the 18th APBDA in Jeju, Korea, the 19th APBDA
in Beijing, China, and the 20th Anniversary APBDA in Hamamatsu, Japan.
The JBA would like to express our deepest appreciation and gratitude to all of our ABA friends and especially Dr.
Paul Yoder, the 1963 President of the ABA, who made great contributions to the Japanese Band World. Since then many
leaders in the American band movement have provided their expertise to our efforts.
Currently, Japan has many fine ensembles. According to the All Japan Band Association, more than 10,000 bands
have participated in our annual competition. At least 250,000 people will have performed, and more than 4 million will
have experienced the AJBC competition.
Again, we are grateful to the ABA for your great support!
