By May 18, the Polish Corps had taken the Abbey of Monte Cassino, the anchor of the German Gustav Line, enabling the British 8th Army and supporting Allied forces, led by the First Canadian Infantry Division and British and Canadian tanks on May 23, to smash the Adolf Hitler (Senger) Line, the most heavilyfortified line that the Allies faced during the Italian Campaign. The line was fortified, not only by barbed wire and other defenses, but by numerous machine gun and 75 mm guns (Panzerturm) emplaced in concrete. Suffering their heaviest losses of the Italian Campaign, the Canadians, from Pontecorvo to Aquino in the Liri Valley, led the breakthrough of the Hitler Line, making way for the 5th Canadian Armoured Division to cross the Melfa River on May 24-25, where Major Jack Mahony of the Royal Westminster Regiment was awarded the Victoria Cross for valour, thus opening the Road to Rome for the Allies. Through the efforts of Karen Storwick of Calgary and Roberto Molle of Italy, a very large and beautiful commemorative plaque was unveiled near the main square of Pontecorvo on May 23, 2009. Ken MacLeod As part of the Special Travel International military tours, historian Ken MacLeod has led over a dozen trips to revisit the Canadians and the Italian Campaign in World War II, keeping the memory of their sacrifice alive and establishing many contacts with the Italian people along the route. photo: Farawayman BREAKING OF THE HITLER LINE May 23, 1944 ■ ■ Jewels of the Adriatic - September 26 – October 15 ■ ■ Best of the Baltics - September 28 – October 16 ■ ■ Important Preview: 100 th Anniversary Vimy Ridge - April 2017 with a focus on World War I and the events around Arras & Vimy photo: Websi Please contact us to receive detailed programs of any of our tours! t o l l - f re e : 1 - 8 0 0 - 6 6 5 - 0 9 9 8 w w w. s t i c a n a d a . c o m Ask about our upcoming tours and other destinations SPECIAL TRAVEL INTERNATIONAL 4603 Main Street Va n c o u ve r, B C V5V 3R6 Canada tel no.: 1 (604) 291-1332 toll-free: 1 (800) 665-0998 fax no.: 1 (604) 291-1378 s t i @ s t i c a n a d a .com w w w. s t i c a n a d a . c o m SPECIAL TRAVEL INTERNATIONAL 4603 Main Street Va n c o u ve r, B C V5V 3R6 Canada tel no.: 1 (604) 291-1332 toll-free: 1 (800) 665-0998 fax no.: 1 (604) 291-1378 s t i @ s t i c a n a d a .com w w w. s t i c a n a d a . c o m best of the baltics photo: Patrick Giraud CC by SA 1.2 SPECIAL TRAVEL INTERNATIONAL lithuania – latvia – estonia – finland– st. petersburg photo: Jack Brauer september SPECIAL TRAVEL 22 – september INTERNATIONAL 6/9, 2013 (15/18 days) Jewels of the AdriAtic AlbAniA – Montenegro – bosniA-herzegovinA – croAtiA – sloveniA Assemble your ideal holiday with five possible combinations: 1 Pre–Tour + Cruise sep 26 – oct 10, 2015 (15 days) 5 LAnd Tour oct 2 – 11, 2015 (10 days) – – estonia norway with optional stockholm – oslo extension september 28 – october 12/16, 2015 (15/19 days) the baltic countries have a fascinating history extending back many centuries, through the period of russian occupation up to their more recent independence and incorporation into the european union. memorable experiences await you in their mix of charming cities, traditional villages and uniquely beautiful countryside. photo: Websi 4 Pre–Tour + LAnd Tour sep 26 – oct 10, 2015 (16 days) best of the baltics lithuania – latvia finland – sweden 4603 Main Street Va n c o u ve r, BC V5V 3R6 Canada tel no.:1 (604) 291-1332 toll-free:1 (800) 665-0998 fax no.:1 (604) 291-1378 [email protected] www.sticanada.com 3 Pre–Tour, Cruise + PosT–Tour sep 26 – oct 15, 2015 (20 days) photo: Bart Hiddink photo: Simm photo: Diego Delso photo: Jpatokal 2 Cruise + PosT–Tour oct 2 – 15, 2015 (14 days) SPECIAL TRAVEL I N T E R N AT I O N A L RESERVATION FORM please indicate x your tour selections below May 11 - 22, 2016 (12 days) May 8 - 22, 2016 (15 days) o italian campaign o sicily + italian campaign Please fill out this form in full and mail it with your deposit of $600.00 and insurance payment for each passenger.
