Small Copper Butterly
o
If you like spotting butterlies look out for the Small
Copper. They like dry sunny places to bask in the
sun. The males will chase off any other insect from
their chosen sun-lounging spot. Unfortunately,
although their habitat is plentiful, they are in
decline. Experts think the warming climate causes
the late brood of butterlies to come out in autumn
n
instead of hibernating.
Rowan in lower + elder + hawthorn
The white lowers of blackthorn are fading, to be replaced by more white-lowering
shrubs and trees. Rowan’s creamy lower heads will produce those bright orange
berries for birds in August. The strange smelling Elder will also come into bloom. And of
course our many Hawthorn bushes will produce arching sprays of May blossom, named
after the month.
Jack-by-the-Hedge
So named because of the way this lowering plant
stands to attention alongside hedges. Although in the
cabbage not the onion family, the whole plant smells
garlicky. It’s also called garlic mustard or hedge garlic.
It’s one of the caterpillar foodplants for the Orange Tip
butterly. Male orange tips are easily recognised with
their white wings tipped with – you guessed it – orange.
Females are just white.
Greeninches hanging on
Greeninches have been decimated by a disease called trichomonosis; a 53% decline
since 1979. Make sure you regularly clean your bird tables and feeders. Their song
is a proper summer sound: a series of trills at slow, medium and rapid speeds, with a
characteristic “izzzz” at the end.
Path clearing
For the next few months we shall be concentrating on keeping paths clear at Filnore
Woods, so come and use them or better still, help us to clear them at one of our regular
work mornings. ◙

NEWS AROUND
ST PETER’S HOSPICE SEVERNSIDE SUPPORT GROUP would be delighted to welcome
you to Afternoon High Tea on Wednesday 25 May at the Methodist Church Hall in Thornbury
at 2.30pm. The guest speaker will be Mrs Jane Fearnley Whittingstall, garden designer,
author, columnist and grandma. Tickets are priced at £10 (to include a full home-made high
tea) and are available from Thornbury Town Hall from 2 May, or pay at the door. Please
support St Peter’s – your local Hospice.
BASKET TRAPS FOR SEVERN SALMON On 10 May a new exhibition will open at Thornbury
and District Museum and continue until August. “Putchers and Putts” will feature the wicker
basket traps once widely used in the Severn Estuary for catching salmon. This Exhibition
has been planned by three Thornbury residents. Deryk Huby and Don Riddle for many years
had the ishery at Haywards Rock near Berkeley, which contained both the cone-shaped
putchers and the massive funnel-shaped three-sectioned putts, used for catching eels and
shrimps as well as salmon. During the late 1960s Nick Large took a series of photographs
of the local salmon isheries – all of which have now disappeared. Today, putchers can still
be seen as loral features for Thornbury in Bloom. The museum is open Tuesdays to Fridays
from 1-4pm and Saturdays from 10am-4pm. Entrance is free.
ALVESTON SINGERS invite you to their Summer 2016 concerts, to celebrate The Fair
Season with Dvorak’s Songs of Nature and Elgar’s From the Bavarian Highlands, plus a
selection of traditional and folk songs, on Saturday 18 June, at the Methodist Church, Alveston
and on Saturday 25 June in the United Reformed Church, Thornbury. Both concerts start at
7.30pm. Free admission with retiring collection for Meningitis Now and BRACE.

AN EVENING WITH FOUR CLASSICALLY TRAINED VOICES. Four third-year students
from the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama in Cardiff performed with the Alveston
Singers in Thornbury and Alveston last Christmas, to much public acclaim and enjoyment of
the performance of the soloist roles in Handel's Messiah. It is with real pleasure and pride
that we can announce the four singers have agreed to return for a special concert at 7.30pm
on Saturday 7 May in the Baptist Church, Gillingstool. Local residents may be aware of the
musical progress and prowess of Thornbury-born and bred Aaron Holmes (baritone). He
appeared with Tom Perkins (tenor), Cristina Negoescu (mezzo) and Grace Wyatt (soprano)
at the performance of last year's Messiah, and Cristina and Grace also sang at a recent
performance in Thornbury of 456765 8659: . The concert to be given by these four young,
talented performers will feature their favourite songs and recital pieces and will include
classical pieces, musical theatre songs and even the odd traditional folk song. Any proceeds
from the concert will be donated to the Armstrong Hall Redevelopment Project (Phase 1)
which is concentrating initially on the dressing room area used regularly by youth groups and
local amateur dramatics groups, as well as by professional performers at the annual Arts
Festival. This is a rare chance to appreciate the talent of outstanding students who, who
knows, may one day appear at the highest level of our national musical heritage. Suggested
donation for tickets is £10 each (£5 for under 18s). Tickets can be obtained from Thornbury
Town Hall or from the Baptist Church or by phoning 412272.
WE AT FASCINATING RHYTHM will be holding a Fashion Show and Sale at the Armstrong
Hall on Wednesday 15 June, at 7pm for a 7.30pm start. This popular event (we run it most
years) will showcase fabulous cut-price bargains from quality High Street labels! All items
are available for purchase on the night with cash or card payments. For more information
please contact Vanessa, Tel. 294937 ;: email [email protected] Tickets £6.

THIS SUMMER The Castle School will be celebrating their amazing history by running an
exhibition displaying archive material including artefacts, photos and documents spanning
the last 50 years. The exhibition will run from Monday 13 June to Saturday 25 June and
they would love you to share your memories with them. These could be in the form of
photographs, videos, stories or soundbites and the school will try to include as many as
possible in the exhibition. They are particularly interested to see photos spanning the
generations of families who attended Castle School from 1965 to the present day, and old
uniforms, diaries or other such items. They are also looking for volunteers to be responsible
for curating the collection from the last ive decades – this may appeal to those of you who
went to the school within a period of the school’s history. If you would like to be involved with
this or can help with any memories or other items mentioned above, then please telephone
862108, email: [email protected], or make contact via the school's Facebook
page – The Castle School 50th Anniversary. Further details of the event will be available

Northavon Dolls House and Miniature Club
by KH
N the irst Tuesday evening of each month a group of about twenty enthusiastic
members, with a range of ages, of a special club, meet from 7.30 to 9.30pm in
the Alveston Methodist Church Hall. The Club was formed thirty years ago by Don and
Margaret Harding, and its momentum has been maintained ever since. The attention to
accuracy and detail in the making of tiny items for dolls’ houses is the essence of what
the Club is about, and while many items are crafted at home, each month’s meeting is
centred on making something special. One meeting may, for example, be to create a
miniature garden corner or a shopping trolley or a collection of fruit – or a tiny elephant!
There are tea and biscuits too, of course.
The Club has a committee of eight members and they meet four times in each year,
with Secretary, Treasurer and Chair, who is Vivienne Craig – she has held the post
for sixteen years. In Vivienne’s Thornbury home one meets a number of wonderfullyconstructed miniature houses and their amazing contents. There is a superb house
standing about 4’6” high, constructed to a one-twelfth scale, and when the front is
opened, there are revealed ten beautiful rooms intricately furnished in the Georgian
style – most of the items of tiny furniture and tiny people have been accurately made
and dressed by Vivienne herself, with some assistance from husband Les constructing
some brickwork and slate tiles. There are also cottages made to one-twenty-fourth
or even one-forty-eighth scale. Bricks, plastering and thatch look so real, as do the
immaculate interiors. One truly remarkable house has a room whose walls are covered
with miniatures of family photographs – real photographs of generations of her family.
Not all kits for certain items are purchased – many are created by members themselves,
and Vivienne’s next project is to create a miniature Brownie box camera.
As often happens in communities, members of different organisations co-operate and
support each other, and recently the Club provided a “Seaside” display at the Alveston
Flower Show. From time to time visiting speakers and demonstrators give talks and
presentations to gatherings of other societies and clubs, and this Club’s activities would
make ideal topics for visiting speakers.
Many members originally joined the Club because a friend or family member had invited
them along, but there are no doubt a number of other folk who would be fascinated with
what the Club has to offer, and would enjoy this very special creative activity. Each
month in this Magazine the Club’s meeting is shown for the irst Tuesday of the month,
and Vivienne’s contact phone number is given – 01454 501901. The Northavon Dolls
House and Miniature Club has so much to offer. ◙
THORNBURY COMMUNITY GARDEN'S popular afternoon "Walled Garden Walks" are
being organised again this summer. They will visit four or ive gardens hidden away in or
near central Thornbury, including Christ the King Church Prayer Garden, celebrating its 10th
year. On Wednesday 22 June the walk will inish with tea and biscuits in Thornbury Castle
gardens, when the rose garden should be at its best. On Tuesday 12 July we inish with tea
and cakes in the Chantry garden. Both walks are fully accessible and proceed at a gentle
pace. Full details next month, but book a date now – places are limited!

SUPER SUCCESSFUL SWIMARATHON The Rotary Club of Thornbury held their annual
Swimarathon at the Thornbury Leisure Centre on the weekend of 4/5/6 March; and once more
the event was a great success. Over the weekend 60 teams swam a total of 6,594 lengths of
the pool; that represents an astonishing 164,850 metres. Not only that, but the sponsorship
gained by those teams amounted to nearly £13,000, one of the best weekend totals in
the 30 year history of the event. Taking into account Gift Aid and corporate sponsorship,
the total should be over £15,000. The event was opened by Thornbury Town Mayor, Cllr
Guy Rawlinson, accompanied by Rotary President Ben Bradley and Helen Mackay from
the Jessie May Trust, one of the headline beneiciaries. The other headline charity is the
National Eye Research Council, based in Bristol, and of course, many other local groups
and charities will beneit over the coming year. Thornbury Rotary would like to express their
gratitude to all who supported the event including the corporate sponsors, “Panache” – the
Castle School Steel Band who entertained us, and of course all the swimmers, their friends
and family who came along to support and add to the atmosphere. Thank you all!
THORNBURY CHORAL SOCIETY will be holding their next concert at The Castle School,
on Saturday 7 May at 7.30pm. The works to be performed are Rossini’s William Tell
_`bcdfcb, Rossini’s exciting hdjkjd mjdbc and Schubert’s lovely Mass in G. The concert will
be conducted by Steven Kings and accompanied by Thornbury Camerata. The soloists are
Christina Birchall-Sampson (soprano), Helen Ann Gregory (alto), Richard Belshaw (tenor)
and Min Kim (bass). Tickets cost £12 (£2 for under 16s) and may be obtained from Thornbury
Town Hall, from any Thornbury Choral Society member or from Ruth Piolle, Tel.416518 or

CHRISTIAN AID WEEK: the week we love every neighbour. Picture a young mother of four.
Her husband has left. She has no land. No assets. No savings. And the only work she can
get is backbreaking manual labour for as little as 74p a day. Her home has been looded
several times and last August it looded again. This is Morsheda. She is our neighbour, and
she desperately needs our help. From 15-21 May, our church will join with more than 20,000
others across the country for the sake of people like Morsheda. Across the UK and Ireland
we will deliver 7 million envelopes to our local neighbours to raise money for our global
neighbours in need. It is an opportunity to reach out to our community, and to make sure
some of the world’s poorest people have enough to eat and a safe place to live. A Home
Safety Package from Christian Aid could raise Morsheda’s home on an earth plinth, safe
from the lood plain, and give her resources to invest in things like farm animals, seeds and
a composting kit – giving her the tools she needs to build a better future. A new chance at
life for Morsheda costs as little as £250. Volunteers from the churches try to raise as much
money each year as possible and they will be putting envelopes through many doors in the
town. Some will be called for in a day or two, others cannot be collected, so we ask you to
follow the instructions on the slip enclosed with the envelope. Please be as generous as
you are able. Gift aiding any amount adds another 25 per cent. This year there will also be
other opportunities to donate: on Thursday 19 May, a coffee morning and home-made card
sale will be held in Ruth Parker's house at 8 Midland Way, 10am-12 noon, and on Saturday
21 May there is a coffee morning at the URC, Chapel Street, at 10am and a Musical Concert
of local talent at Christ the King on Castle Street, at 7.30pm, price £5. Thank you from our
desperately poor neighbours.
THE INNER WHEEL CLUB OF THORNBURY is holding a Charity Coffee Morning at 10am
on 19 May at Thornbury Cricket Club, Alveston, in aid of Head Injury Support. All the usual
stalls will be there, including cakes, books, plants etc.

THORNBURY ORCHESTRA comprises players who either live (and practise!) in Thornbury
or in nearby villages and the surrounding area. Since its irst tentative meeting in November
2002, the now lourishing orchestra has grown to nearly sixty players, of all ages. The
orchestra performs all of its concerts for charity, and over the years many thousands of
pounds have been raised for good causes. This summer the charity is Thornbury Area Youth
Music (www.thornbury-music.org). The conductor, Christopher Hill, already had extensive
experience conducting amateur orchestras in Gloucester, Cheltenham, Manchester and
Bristol, before coming to Thornbury. Since becoming the orchestra’s conductor he has taken
them through many challenging and enjoyable works. The United Reformed Church provides
a perfect venue for rehearsals, and the nearby Wheatsheaf is a convenient watering hole.
Hiring or buying music from the publishers can be expensive; fortunately, Thornbury Library
along with other libraries, have been extremely helpful and has sourced most of the musical
scores so far, enabling the orchestra to keep costs down.
The orchestra is run by an enthusiastic committee, which plans the concerts, working closely
with the conductor and players. Our next concert is on 11 June, at 7.30pm in Castle School,
with music by Dvorak, Shostakovich, Mendelssohn and Frith. Conductor Chris Hill, Leader
Janet Lewis. Tickets cost £8 and can be purchased via the orchestra’s website www.
thornburyorchestra.org.uk and at the door.
Following the success of Thornbury Orchestra a new group, Thornbury Chamber Players,
has been set up to play a repertoire for smaller string ensembles. Rehearsals take place
in Thornbury on Thursday evenings. Players interested in joining are asked to email Guy
Halley at [email protected]

Great Gargoyles and Grotesques!
by Steve Griffiths
ODAY we certainly have no shortage of entertainments. Many of us now have
online access to ilms, whether you are into comedy, horror or drama. But 700 years
ago opportunities were very limited. One of the few sources of entertainment might be
your local church, where you could listen to stories of hellire and damnation while
looking at the gargoyles and grotesques for illustration. The talk by John Putley to the
March gathering of Thornbury History and Archaeological Society was both entertaining
and interesting. John, from the Gloucestershire Archive, is one of only two people in
the country making a study of these often seen but little understood stone creatures.
A gargoyle (derived from the Latin gar meaning throat) is simply a decorated water
spout, which directs rain water out from the walls to prevent water and frost damage. A
grotesque is a similar decoration that does not have this function, often applied to the
end of a beam or corbel.
The history of gargoyles starts, as most things do, with the ancient Greeks, who
decorated spouts for rainwater runoff with lion’s heads. The Romans copied the Greeks
in this, as in everything, but started using human masks as well as lion heads. The
Saxons didn’t really need rainwater spouts as their steep thatched roofs overhung the
walls, but they decorated timber beams with animal motifs. The Georgians didn’t use
gargoyles in their austere classical architecture, but the Victorians reintroduced many
in their Neo-Gothic churches and public buildings.
The huge explosion of gargoyles in the Middle Ages began with the Normans and their
stone churches and cathedrals. A notable example is Kilpeck Church in Herefordshire.
Gargoyles reached their zenith in quantity and artistic quality during the 13th and 14th
centuries when people were becoming more prosperous and more inclined to express
their individuality. Unfortunately we know very little about the production of gargoyles
because they were not deemed important enough to document. No accounts survive
which detail the supply of gargoyles so we don’t know who paid for these sometimes
seemingly frivolous decorations. Perhaps stonemasons or their apprentices were
just having some fun in their spare time. Certainly it is dificult to imagine the church
authorities paying for some of the more subversive examples.
The styles of gargoyle vary widely but tend to fall into three main groups; Human,
Animal, or Angels and Demons. Humans are often depicted playing musical instruments
or singing (music being another important medium of entertainment in the Middle
Ages). It is thought that some gargoyles were designed to produce sounds from their
open mouths when the wind blew in the right direction. Many human gargoyles are
humorously bawdy, (gurning and mooning at the vicarage being popular motifs) nicely
demonstrating the medieval idea of comedy. On the more horriic side there are vast
numbers of angels or demons, often shown in the process of eating people or with
people inside them. They illustrate the medieval idea of heaven and hell in the same
way as wall paintings, few of which have survived until the present day.
If you want to see some examples and ind out more you can visit Gloucestershire
Archive online. Just google “gargoyles glos”. If you are interested in inding out more

Could you volunteer for Carers Support Centre?
OULD you make a difference to someone who is ill or disabled? Do you want
to give a carer a break? Carers Support Centre runs a sitting service in South
Gloucestershire which gives companionship. The local charity links volunteers with
family carers and the person they care for. They provide this service FREE to carers in
South Gloucestershire, but currently have a long waiting list and they urgently need to
recruit more volunteers. A carer is someone who cares, unpaid, for a family member or
friend who is ill, frail, disabled or has mental health problems. Volunteers are motivated
by their desire to help carers; and they give their time regularly and build a relationship
with the cared for person. They typically volunteer for two to three hours per week or
fortnight. They are given training and ongoing support. Their help means a carer can
take regular time out – to meet friends, go shopping, or simply enjoy a hobby.
Marilyn Crump, Sitting Service Co-ordinator explains: “A volunteer needs to be someone
a carer can trust and who wants to build a relationship with the cared for person. We
take time to ind out about and train volunteers so that we can match them carefully to
a family. This means that carers can take a regular break in complete conidence that
the person they care for will be happy and safe.” The service relies on volunteers who
offer companionship, care and compassion by spending quality time with the cared for
individual. If you are a sensitive, friendly and reliable person, with a few hours a week
to spare this could be the perfect opportunity for you.
Ray is 69 and cares for his wife, Irene. She has been diagnosed with Alzheimer’s.
They have been married for 48 years and, for the last three, Irene has been a totally
different person; it has been heart-breaking for him. Since Irene’s diagnosis Ray has
experienced a loss of independence, until he found a sitter through the Carers Support
Centre. They matched Irene with Barbara, who visits once a week and the two have
really hit it off. Ray is really enjoying being able to see his friends again. He said, “The
sitting service is a lifesaver. It is just two hours a week, but you can put up with an awful
lot if you know that you can get a break. It's the only time I meet up with friends I’ve
known for 50 years. Barbara is a very creative person and Irene always seems to be
quite happy when I get back in. Just recently Barbara has got Irene knitting again. She
has always enjoyed art and craft work.”
To ind out more about volunteering please contact: Marilyn Crump, Sitting Service
Co-ordinator, Tel. 01179 375622 or mobile 07722 283672, or email: Marilync@

THORNBURY RAMBLERS are a very friendly group who enjoy country walks of varying
lengths from four to about twelve miles. Most walks take place on Sunday mornings with
a few on a weekday summer evening and perhaps on a Saturday. Social events are also
held throughout the year, examples being ilm shows, a quiz, mulled wine etc. The annual
subscription is only £6 and on walks car sharing usually happens, expenses being reimbursed
to the driver. Members come from a wide area, a good many from Thornbury (where we
assemble) and the surrounding villages, plus Bristol and sometimes further aield. So why not
give us a try and see how friendly we are. A wide variety of terrain and items of local interests
are covered and we stop for coffee and a picnic lunch. For further details please have a word
with Peter Bird 413924 or view our website which is www.thornburyramblers.org.uk.
ARE YOU RETIRED AND LOOKING FOR SOMETHING NEW? If so, why not consider
joining Thornbury & District Probus Club. It is aimed at retired PROfessional and BUSiness
men. We meet on the irst Wednesday of each month for lunch, with a speaker. There is
much convivial chat. There are no fund-raising activities. Give it a thought and if you are
interested, call Roger Jephcott on 418126.
A LOAD OF OLD COBBLERS (and some butchers, bakers and candle-makers as well) is the
theme of the irst walk in Thornbury and District’s 2016 summer walks programme. We will
show you where everything from soap to saddles, beef to beer, and baskets to bonnets were
made and sold in Thornbury in days gone by. Wallpaper making, leather tanning and ropemaking are some of the less well-known activities also carried out in the town and there is a
less than salubrious connection with the Cawardine family, once famous for its tea and coffee
shops in Bristol. There is even a link with the real tailor in Beatrix Potter’s Tailor of Gloucester
story. We start from the Museum in Chapel Street at 6.30pm on Friday 20 May and the walk
will last about one and a half to two hours, inishing in the High Street. The walk is suitable
for wheelchair users. We would ask you not to bring dogs, apart from guide dogs, please.
Tickets cost £3 and should be obtained in advance from the Museum, Tel. 857774 (during
opening hours) or email: [email protected] Opening hours are Tuesday
to Friday 1-4pm, Saturday 10am-4pm.

Mental Health Workshop
On 23 March we held a bite-sized course, Promoting Positive Mental Health, run by
experienced mental-health and social-care trainer Suzanne Pearson. Her ninety-minute
introduction to mental health awareness covered ways to build resilience and wellbeing
into our personal lives and in our work roles. She also discussed local mental-health
wellbeing services and how to access them. The workshop was attended by members
of the public, volunteers and professionals. This course is free to access and if you or
your group are interested in attending contact [email protected] to either
book a place on an existing course or organise a bespoke workshop for your group.
Business lunch
We held our annual business lunch on 30 March. This was aimed at helping businesses
ind ways to engage with their local community through volunteering. Guest speakers
representing the Ofice for Civil Society Local (SW), CVS South Gloucestershire, Involve
Swindon, Europa Group Ltd and Essilor Ltd, spoke about the Local Skills Exchange
Project, the irst South Glos Challenge. They explained how a network of companies,
statutory bodies and voluntary organisations are working together to encourage
employees to give their time and develop their skills through volunteering in the local
community, and how two local employers are helping the Thornbury community.
Representatives from businesses, including the John Lewis Partnership, TSB Bank,
Four Pillars and WPA Healthcare, enjoyed a thought-provoking, interesting and
informative lunch and many are keen to continue discussing the topics at future forums.
“It was the best event of its type that I have ever attended” was a comment which we
welcomed. If you were unable to attend the lunch but would like to ind out more, please

In your Parish Church this month!
by Revd Jan
AY is a lovely time of year to stroll down from the town and visit St Mary’s, then
maybe wander down the Pithay and round by the town cemetery. Many people
drop in to the Parish Church for a quiet moment and to sense the peace of this place of
prayer, where folk have come for centuries to meet with God.
At the beginning of May the Severn Vale Arts Trail will be on and three exhibitors will be
in the church, as well as others in venues nearby. We welcome the artists who remind
us of our God-given creativity; we are made “in his image” – not all of us can paint or
sew; I certainly can’t, but we do share in delight at the beauty of God’s world and the
creative gifts of our local artists.
From 9 May until 14 May there will be a special Prayer Space in St Mary’s, with the
theme “Thy kingdom come”. Bishop Rachel is encouraging us to have a special time
of prayer between the festivals of Ascension (on 5 May) and Pentecost (15th May) as
we seek God’s leading for the future of our Diocese. The Prayer Space will help us
to relect on what God’s kingdom might look like, with symbols and simple symbolic
actions. For example, placing your hand into a tray of sand and pondering the handprint
it leaves, helps us to relect on what effect each of us has on those around us – do
we bring God’s love to others, do we encourage them, are we a life-giving inluence
on them? Come and use the Prayer Space at any time during the day that week, the

church is open all day, as always.

Every fourth Sunday of the month there is a concert in St Mary’s at 4pm, and on 22
May the concert is given by a String Quartet. Entry is free with a retiring collection, and
afternoon tea is served after each concert. Come and enjoy lovely music and food!
Meanwhile of course regular services continue, on Sundays at 8am, 10.30am and 6pm;
on Wednesdays at 10am, and Saturdays at 9am. Parents of pre-school children are
warmly invited to bring them to “Hopscotch” on Thursdays at 9.15am in term-time.
Whatever your interests I hope you will come into the Parish Church this month and
enjoy the events, the worship or the sense of tranquillity there. ◙
This month’s cover is from a photograph taken by Nick Large. It shows Alex Bamield
with salmon caught in the putchers of Folly Weir at Aust in July 1967. He is standing
on a strip of metal sheet resting on willow laths, to stop his feet sinking into the Severn
mud.
