PROGRAM NOTES
Symphony No. 3 in D Major, D. 200
By Franz Schubert
Schubert composed his Symphony No. 3 in the early
after writing his Mass in G Major. He was in his
months he would composed a piano sonata, over 100
his second and third symphonies. The first known

The Symphony No. 3 is scored for pairs of flutes, oboes, clarinets, horns, and
trumpets, and for timpani and strings. The first movement opens with an introduction
marked adoLQ^LO ma.M£o&0. The main body of the movement, OULL&qKQ con tMAO, is a son
ata in which the first theme is divided between the clarinet and the violins. The
second theme is more tuneful by way of contrast, and is given to the oboe. A brief
development section follows in which the basses imitate the principle theme. A
transition passage returns to the first theme, again stated first by the clarinet
and then taken up by the strings.
The second movement, aJLL<LQK&t£o, is a graceful theme in ternary form. The middle
section, march-like in character, is first given to a clarinet solo and then as a
duet with the clarinet and flute.
The third movement is the traditional minuet; however, there is a long extension
in the middle part of the minuet, moving through a wide variety of keys. The trio
is given to the oboe and bassoon, and is followed by the normal return to the minuet.
The fourth movement, pA.C6to vivace, presents a lively, sweeping motion from begin
ning to end. There is essentially one theme, stated at the beginning in what has
been described as a "tarantella rhythm," and it is out of this that the entire
movement grows.
Concerto for Horn and Orchestra in E-Flat Major, K. 495

Probably all, but certainly three, of Mozart's four horn concertos came into existence
through his intimate friendship with Ignaz Leutgeb (or Leitgeb), who at one time was
a horn player in the Archbishop's orchestra at Salzburg. Leutgeb later settled in a
suburb of Vienna (1777), where he combined horn playing with the running of a cheese
monger's shop ("the size of a snail's house" as it was described by Mozart's father
from whom Leutgeb had borrowed a sum of money for his rather unusual commercial enter
prise). The composer's relations with him were not without their amusing touches;
touches that bear on the history of these concertos.
Leutgeb was a proficient player, but otherwise an uneducated fellow and something of
a simpleton who would allow himself to serve as a butt for Mozart's somewhat Boeotian
sense of humor. He was frequently made the object of practical jokes for, as Mozart
once confessed, "I can never resist making a fool of Leutgeb." The spirit in which
the concertos were written is reflected in the various remarks adorning the autograph
scores. Thus K. 417 bears the inscription "W.A. Mozart took pity on Leitgeb, ass, ox,
and fool, in Vienna on March 27, 1783
the score of K. 495 is written in different
inks, red, black, blue and green, and that of the Rondo of K. 412 shows a drawing of
Leutgeb in action and is interspersed with ironic commentaries on the performer's
deficiencies.

Whatever Mozart's estimate of the capacities of Leutgeb, the concertos are certainly
virtuoso pieces. Though written for the Waldhorn or "natural" horn (valves having
not yet been invented) they constitute an exacting test even for a player on the
modern instrument. The solo part often reaches up to the highest note on the horn in
E flat (for which the last concertos are written), there are some difficult scale
passages, wide leaps from the high to the low register and vice versa, and long
sustained phrases
all of which makes severe demands on tongueing, technique, breath
control and the production of a round, equable tone- Yet Mozart, as the perfect
stylist he was, never places undue strain on his soloist, adjusting with minute
care structure and texture of the music to the limitation of the instrument. Where
the horn is most itself and reveals its true genius is in its capacity to sing and
to sing with a warm rich tone. Hence the profusion of cantablle themes which Mozart
scatters throughout this concerto.
TONIGHT'S SOLOIST ............
We are very pleased to have Timothy Swenson as our guest soloist for tonight's
performance. He is a 1976 graduate of Illinois State University, where he was
a prominent ensemble and chamber music player. He has performed with several
orchestras in the region, and has been a participant in the Sarasota Music
Festival in Florida. He serves as principal horn in the Kankakee Symphony Orchestra,
and will be featured with the orchestra later this year in the Britten "Serenade
for Tenor, Horn, and Strings."

a weekly 30 minute television program, and initiated out
reach ministries. He served as District Youth President,
chairman of District Church Schools, and served on nu
merous other boards and committees. In 1973 he was
elected assistant to the president with responsibilities as
director of development and public relations at MidAmerica Nazarene College, located in Olathe, Kansas. He
spear-headed a financial campaign "Spirit of 76" which
raised over $780,000 for capital funds for Mid-America
Nazarene College. In September 1976, Jim accepted the
pastorate of the First Church of the Nazarene in Atlanta,
Georgia. In June 1979 he was elected district superinten
dent of the Nebraska District of the Church of the
Nazarene.

Master's from Boston Univer
sity and Western Reserve Uni
versity. In addition, Linford
has done doctoral and post
doctoral work at the Univer
sity of Chicago and University of Minnesota. He served as
a member of the faculty and head of the Department of
Social Sciences at Eastern Nazarene College from 1930 to
1940. In 1940 he accepted the post of registrar and chair
man of the History Department at Olivet. From 1949 to
1968 Linford served as registrar and head of the History
Department at National College of Education. Since 1968,
he has served as coordinator of federal and state grants for
Olivet, a position he currently holds. He has served as state
and national president for several professional organiza
tions: American Association of Collegiate Registrars and
Admissions Officers, American Association of Univer
sity Professors, and The Organization of American Histor
ians. He has been elected to numerous biographicals such
as Illinois Lives, Who's Who in America Mid-West, and
Outstanding Educators of America.

T h e Orpheus C hoir, now in its fourth d ecad e o f annual perform ances, was founded by the late Dr. W alter
B. Larsen in 1932. Mrs. N aom i Larsen directed the choir a fter her husband's passing in 1957, and held the
conductorship until 1972.
O rpheus C h oir has represented O livet N azarene C ollege on the C entral Educational Zone and at many
quadrennial G en eral A ssem blies o f the Church o f the N azarene. In M arch, 1974, the choir was selected to
perform at the M usic Educators N ational C onference in A naheim , C alifornia. In A pril, 1976, they sang at
the N ational C athedral in Washington, D .C . w hile on their "A m erican Heritage T o u r.” T h e choir per
form ed a t the United States Air Force A cadem y, C olorado, in 1977, and in M arch, 1978, they toured to
M onterrey, M exico to participate in various church concerts.
Dr. D. G eorge D unbar, conductor o f O rpheus C hoir, is professor o f music a t O livet N azarene C ollege. He
holds the D octorate o f Music degree from the University o f Southern C alifornia. H e also conducts the C on
cert Singers and teaches voice, conducting, and church music courses at Olivet.
O livet N azarene C ollege is a four-year liberal arts school with m ore than 2,100 students, and is located
fifty miles south o f C hicago in K an ka k ee, Illinois. Most o f its students com e from the four m idw estem states
o f Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, and Wisconsin to take courses for m ajor and minors in 43 departm ents o f
study. Dr. Leslie Parrott is president o f the school w hich w as founded in 1907.

The 38-voice Viking Male Chorus is carefully selected by audition from the stu
dents of O livet Nazarene College, and represents the full range of academic
majors and interests. They com bine the traditionally popular sound of men's
voices with the highest standards of musicianship, creating a listening experience
which is truly unique.
The Vikings are in regular demand for concerts, church services, service clubs,
conventions, and television appearances. They participated in the Inaugural
Activities during the inauguration of President jim m y Carter. The 1977-78
concert season included appearances in Nassau in the Bahamas, and at Walt
Disney World, Florida.
The conductor of the group is jo e M. Noble, who holds a bachelor's degree from
Luther College, Decorah, Iowa, and holds a master's degree from the University
of Iowa. He has com pleted all work and prelims for a doctoral degree from the
University of Iowa. Mr. N oble conducts Choral Union, teaches voice and m usic
education courses at Olivet.

The house o f B u t t e r f ly on a h i l l overlooking Nagasaki, Japan in the e a rly
1900's. I t is three years since the marriage o f B u t t t e r f ly and Lieutenant
Pinkerton. He has been gone fo r two years and w h ile in America, cancelled his
O riental marriage c o n tract with Cio-cio-san and has married an American g i r l .
During h is absence, B u t t e r f ly has borne him a son. She has learned o f his other
marriage from the American Consul. She is sure, however, that when Pinkerton
learns o f his wonderful c h ild he w ill return to her as he promised.
As the scene opens a cannon has been fir e d in the harbor announcing the
a r r iv a l o f P in k e rto n 's ship.
In w ild e st excitement, she orders Suzuki to bring
a l l the flow ers from the garden to decorate the house. As they arrange the flowers
they sing the lo v e ly duet "Scuoti q u ella fronda di c il e i g io " in which they jo y
ously declare th at they w ill rob the cherry tree o f a ll i t s p etals and the garden
o f a l l i t s blooms and s c a tte r them in handfuls over the house 1n honor o f th is
great occasion. A fte r the duet, B u tte rly e x its to put on her wedding gown and

has also taken his lands.
S i r Edgardo once rescued Lucia from the a tta ck o f a mad b u ll. Lucia and
Edgardo soon became lovers but had to keep t h e ir love a secret because o f brother
E n ric o 's hatred fo r a l l Ravenswoods. Edgardo must leave the country on a mission
to France but the two pledge t h e ir love fo r each other.

thus dupes her into signing a marriage con tract w ith A rturo. Our scene opens
a t th a t very moment. S i r Edgardo, having ju s t returned to the country, bursts
into the room. Now ensues the famous sextet.

him a key to his v a lis e and t e l l s him to take from i t a c e rta in packet o f papers
and burn them without reading t h e ir contents. Deeply moved, Don Carlo promises
to do what he asks. In r e l i e f and g ra titu d e Don Alvaro sings th a t now he can d ie
in peace. The duetris e s to a powerful climax as Don C a rlo , embracing Don A lv a ro ,

E a r lie r in the day a court nobleman has accused the Duke to Mantua o f d is
honoring his daughter, which in f a c t the lib e r t in e Duke has done. In anger and
to p a r t i a ll y cover up the deed, the Duke has the count arre ste d . R ig o le tto ,
the court je s t e r , chides the count and laughing mocks the heart-broken fa th e r
in fro n t o f the e n tir e court. The count w h irlin g on R ig o le tto thunders, "You
who laugh a t a fa th e r 's anguish be acu rsed !" This t e r r i f i e s R ig o le tto fo r he
too has a daughter, whose existance he has kept s e cre t. We now see R ig o le tto
re c a llin g and bemoaning the count's curse. S p a ra fu c ile approaches and introduces
him self as a man who can properly dispose o f an enemy or a r i v a l . R ig o le tto asks
him his p rice fo r k i ll in g a nobleman. The p rice is as may be, S p a ra fu c ile an
swers c a s u a lly but h a lf must be paid in advance.

and IV , the Duke has met G ild a , q u ite by a ccid e n t, not knowing she is R ig o le tto 's
daughter, and has f a lle n madly fo r her. He pretends to be a lo c a l student and
woos her.
In the meantime the c o u rtie rs d iscover R ig o le tto has a daughter and
kidnap her, bringing her to the Duke's chambers. She then discovers who he
r e a lly is but loves h is other id e n tify so much that she allows him to dishonor
her. In shame she t e l l s her fa th er everything and he vows to get revenge, plan
ning to h ire S p a ra fu c ile to murder the Duke.
The scene opens w ith S p a ra fu c ile shining h is murderous weapon. R ig o le tto
and G ilda are seen approaching the inn. The je s t e r asks his daughter i f she
s t i l l loves the Duke. "Always" she r e p lie s , where upon he bids her look through
the tavern window th at she might change her thinking. Ju s t then, the Duke e n te rs ,
again disguised as someone else and orders a room and some wine. He then sings
the famous a r ia , "La donna e mobile (woman is f i c k l e ) . " He sings th at women's
a ffe c tio n s are as wayward as the breeze. As S p a ra fu c ile and Maddalena en ter,
the Duke promptly t r ie s to embrace her. Sp a ra fu c ile steps to the window and
asks R ig o le tto i f he is to k i l l the victim now or la t e r . R ig o le tto t e l l s him
to aw ait in s tru c tio n s .
Then begins the famous R ig o le tto Q uartet. The Duke, in sid e the tavern , woos
Maddalena, who co y ly responds. Outside, Gilda and R ig o le tto express t h e ir humil
ia tio n and anger. The c o n flic tin g sentiments are s k i l l f u l l y blended to bring
the q u artet to a m agnificent climax.

A gypsy camp in the mountains o f B is c a y , Spain. Azucena is huddled before a
f ir e .
Lying near her is Manrico, wrapped in his clo ak . As the dawn grows b rig h ter
the gypsies begin to move about. Some o f the men go to t h e ir forges, take up t h e ir
hammers and swing in rhythm as they break in to the s t ir r in g "A n vil Chorus" ( "Chidel
gitan o i g iro rn i a b b e lla ? ") They pause in t h e ir work to ask the women to bring them

something to eat and drink and then the chorus takes up the hearty song in
p raise o f the c a re fre e l i f e o f gypsies.
The mood o f the scene changes w ith dram atic sw iftness as flzucena begins the
great a r ia , " S tr id e la vampa." Obsessed by the t e r r ib le memory o f her mother's
execution as a so rceress, she sings o f how the victim was dragged to the stake
to be burned a liv e and how her screams o f pain mingled with the je e r s o f the
vengeful mob. The gypsies, who have gathered around Azucena, t r y to console
her. O b livious to t h e ir a tte n tio n s, she turns to Manrico and f ie r c e ly commands
him to avenge her ("M iv e rd ic a "). Manrico i s m ystifie d a t her in s iste n c e on
revenge. One o f the gypsies now reminds h is companion th a t they must be on
t h e ir way to forage fo r food in the neighboring v illa g e s . They a l l leave the
camp to the s tra in s o f the “ Anvil Chorus.1'

The action takes place in the studio o f Mr. Cash, the Im presario, a t the
Hof-Theater, Vienna, in the Spring o f 1785. The sto ry evolves from Mr. Cash's
attempt to engage two great Prima Donnas o f th at era to appear together in the
same opera. The humor builds as Mr. Cash t r ie s to s a t is fy each d iv a 's ego. The
scene opens w ith Mr. Cash reading through the s c r ip t w ith the f i r s t s ta r to
a r r iv e .
Neither o f the la d ie s i s aware o f the o th e r's involvement in the pro
duction.
I t i s Mr. Cash's Herculean task to persuade both la d ie s to sign a
mutual c o n tra ct w ith equal b illin g fo r both.
The ch aracters in th is m iniature "opera bu ffa'1 are the Mozartian eq u ivalent
o f many characters in our old-time American riv e rb o a t "melodramas." They are
extreme. The audience is not expected to b elie ve th at these characters could
a c t u a lly be “ r e a l . "
The three p rin c ip a l characters are a c tu a lly more lik e c a r ic a tu re s . Mr. Cash
is the embodiment o f every impresario who ever subjected him self to any to rtu re
and paid any p rice to secure the ta le n ts o f big names, with big v o ice s, and with
big eyes to match; Each o f the la d ie s is the embodiment o f every prima donna
(male or fem ale) th a t ever s to le a scene from a colleague or tr ie d to out-sing
them.
I t is not intended th at the audience ever take them se rio u s ly .
I t is a joke,
a scherzo, a spoof i f you please. The characters are co n sisten t to the b it t e r end
in t h e ir egomania as they sing in s in c e re ly in the f in a le th a t a r t is t s must not
s a c r if ic e a r t fo r ego. We in v it e and even urge the audience to l e t go, laugh
f r e e ly , and have as much fun as the players have in th is scene.

A larg e room in the house o f Don Pasquale in Rome in the 1800's.
The newly hired servants o f Don Pasquale enter and sing a chorus in which
they gossip about the e x c itin g events th at have taken place since t h e ir master,
a 70 year-old bachelor, has taken a w ife . The mock marriage ceremony was a
t r ic k by Don Pasquale's frien d s and his nephew to discourage the old man from
marrying a t his age. His new b rid e , Norina, is a c t u a lly his nephew Ernesto 's
betrothed whom Pasquale has never seen before. She is now going about the
task o f hen-pecking and be-deviling the old man so he w ill want a d ivorce.
They w ill reveal the p lo t to him, and hopefully he w ill consent to the marriage
o f Ernesto and Norina which is ex a ctly what he does a t the opera's conclusion.
Meanwhile, the servants sing how there is no end to the confusion and running
about, and not a moment's re s t from answering b e lls . They go on ch attering
about the quarrel between Master and Madame a t dinner on the matter o f going
out to the th e a tre . I t i s obvious to them whose word i s law in the house.
They comment th a t the handsome young nephew is probably up to some m ischief.
The chorus ends as the servants warn each other to be cautious and on the a le r t ,
so th a t they may continue to enjoy the advantages o f working in th is fin e house.

Hall Johnson (1888-1970)
Johnson, a leader in the development of black choral music in America, was a prolific composer
and arranger. Organizer of the New York City Festival Chorus and the popular Hall Johnson
Choir, he also found time to write cantatas, operettas, and art songs, of which one of the
best known is Ride On, King Jesus.
God Is My Strength
Bernard Hamblen (20th century)
This stirring work dramatically portrays the theme of God's unfailing strength and dependa
bility foundthroughout the scriptures, from which the text is taken.
The Dodger
Aaron Copland (1900)
This comical
song,popularized by Mrs. Emma Dusenberry in the 1880's, was supposedly used in
the Cleveland-Blaine presidental campaign. Copland arranged it and included it in his col
lection, Old American Songs.
At the River

An old American hymn tune, the words and melody are by the Rev. Robert Lowry written in 1865.
Arise, Ye Subterranean Winds
Henry Purcell (1659-1695)
Written by Purcell as the climactic aria in his opera The Tempest, based loosely on a Shake
spearean play by the same name, this work is in the popular Italian style used often in 17th
century England. The setting is an island where the powerful Ariel summons the forces of
nature to punish the evil men who would usurp the throne of the rightful king.

This beautiful setting of a Robert Louis Stevenson poem is part of a collection called
Songs of Travel, published in 1960.

Contemporary composer Friedell's setting of a poem by Alice Meynell.

Richard Strauss (1864-1949)
Morgen! (tomorrow) begins on the sharpened tonic and ends on the leading tone, giving the
singer the feeling of beginning and ending nowhere. The thoughts are about love and the
silence it demands; great silence which love can bridge, but not words. It is the fourth song
in the set of Op. 27 which Strauss dedicated to his wife on their wedding day in Sept., 1894.

Reynaldo Hahn (1875-1947)
Hahn, born in Venezuela and raised in Paris, sets this haunting piece in the magic hour be
tween day and evening when the moon is pale and the sun is beginning to set. The ethereal
feeling shows the influence of the French style.

Georges Bizet (1838-1875)
In act two of the opera Carmen, Carmen and her friends are entertaining soldiers in a smokefilled tavern. Outside, the famed matador, Escamillo, is being hailed by the crowds. One of
Carmen's friends invites Escamillo inside for a drink, to which the hero responds with a song
about the dangers and glories of being a matador, or toreador.

Richard Wagner (1813-1883)
The noble knight Tannhauser, cannot find forgiveness on earth for his sin of spending a year
with the goddess Venus, so the maid Elizabeth asks the Virgin Mary to take her as atonement.
Her faithful friend Wolfram hears her final prayer and petitions the evening star to greet
Elizabeth and guide her on her path to heaven. This story is typical of Wagner's music
dramas which frequently combine elements of religion and mysticism.

Entering from offstage and singing to himself, the merry barber Figaro sings about his life
as a jack-of-all-trades, a factotum, whose profession gives him entry to everyone's home; thus,
he is a convenient instrument for the execution of the intrigues of young lovers as well as
old rogues. He displays his loquatious character and the charmed life he leads in this
brilliant and exceedingly rapid aria. Everyone needs Figaro for something and he tries to
placate them all at once!

THE NORDIC CHOIR
LUTHER COLLEGE/DECORAH, IOWA
The Luther College Choir interprets in a superbly
distinctive style, the finest in sacred music. Ranked by
audiences and critics as one o f the leading choral
groups of our day, the choir makes annual tours w ith ex
tended trips to the Coasts and Europe. Numerous
special appearances, such as seven Music Educators
C onferences and five National NBC and CBS radio
broadcasts, are part of the Luther College tradition.
Luther College, founded in 1861, is a college of the
Am erican Lutheran Church with a student body of
2000. The campus is located in Decorah, Iowa, on the
bluffs of the scenic Upper Iowa River. Most of the
buildings and facilities have been constructed in the
last tw o decades.
In 1969, the Nordic Choir was asked to participate in
the International University Choral Festival sponsored
by Lincoln Center, New York. The N ordic Choir was one
of three United States choirs selected to appear.
In the sum m er of 1969, the choir toured Europe
presenting concerts in Norway, East Germany, and
West Germ any. In 1973, the choir toured Romania and
C zechoslovakia under the sponsorship of Am erican
Youth Performs, a program o f Am erican Airlines. A tour
of Norway, Denmark, Germ any, and France was made
in 1977.
On May 31, 1976, the choir represented the state of
Iowa in the Bicentennial Parade of Am erican Music
which was held at the John F. Kennedy Center of the
Perform ing Arts in Washington, D.C.
The 1979-1980 concert tour was made in cooperation
with Eastern Airlines and included perform ances in the
Northeast, Southeast, and southwestern parts o f the
United States. C oncerts were also presented in the
Dominican Republic and M exico City.
In March, 1980, the choir appeared at the North C en
tral Division Conference of the Am erican Choral Direc
tors Association in Madison, W isconsin.
The Preus Library opened in 1969 and is con
sidered to be a model o f aesthetic and functional
library design. An addition to the College Union
opened in May, 1973. The latest construction is the
Center for Faith and Life which includes a major
auditorium . The next building scheduled is a facility
for music.
Luther’s liberal arts curriculum offers 38 m ajors
tow ard the bachelor of arts degree. Many program s
for specific professional training, such as internships
and professional semesters, are available in the strong
program of general education. The 4-1-4 calendar
provides additional opportunities to explore special in
terests in depth both on and off campus. During the
January term , opportunities include independent
study, research, special seminars and selected lec
tures, off-cam pus program s, on the job experiences
and foreign study travel program s.
The academ ic program at Luther is a total ex
perience, intricately com bining courses and personal
relationships, classroom instruction and self-learning.

GARY DEAVEL has been a member o f the fa c u lt y o f Manchester College fo r tw en ty-five years

IRION ETZEL received her elem entary, secondary, and undergraduate co lleg e education in her
_ imetown o f Milwaukee, Wisconsin. She received her b a ch elo r's degree in v io lin performance
from Alverno College in 1966, a f t e r completing three years o f i n i t i a l tra in in g as a Roman
C a th o lic S a lv a to ria n nun in 1963. She completed her m aster's degree work and received her
' zaching lic e n s e from the U n iv e rs ity o f I l l i n o i s , Urbana, in 1970, studying s trin g pedagogy with
iul Rolland.
In 1979, she completed her d octorate in music education from th is same in s t i t u
t io n .
Marion has taught general music and s trin g cla sse s in elementary and secondary schools
in W isconsin, I l l i n o i s , and Maryland. P r io r to her music teaching c a re e r, she was a secondgrade teacher in L a k e v ille , Minnesota. She has received several awards fo r her work in the
" u b lic schools. Besides her p u b lic school a c t i v i t y , Marion has been a member o f the Milwaukee
i v ic Symphony, the Champaign-Urbana Symphony, and the Fo rt Wayne Philharmonic Orchestra,
re s e n tly , she is concertm istress o f the Manchester C iv ic Symphony.
DONNA GUENTHER has taught piano a t Manchester College since the f a l l o f 1978. She holds a B.M.
degree from the New England Conservatory o f Music, a M.M. degree from Southern I l l i n o i s Uniz r s it y , and a D.M.A. degree from the Cleveland In s t it u t e o f Music. During her education she
as had the o p portunity to study p r iv a te ly w ith in te r n a tio n a lly renowned a r t is t s such as

This aria from Handel's opera Samson depicts Samson in his lowest state.
Samson has already been betrayed by Delilah, blinded, and stripped of
his power. Now working in the mill, he is mocked by the Roman officer
Harapha.
It Is Enough
Felix Mendelssohn
Mendelssohn's oratorio Eli1ah includes this aria. Here we find Elijah
discouraged and at the point of ending his life. The Israelites have
defied God, slain His prophets, and are now seeking to take Elijah's
life.
Les Berceaux (The Cradles)
Gabriel Faure
The poet best states the content of the text in saying, "as men sail
away on those ships, they will mysteriously feel the hands of their

TONIGHT'S ARTISTS
ELLIOTT GOLUB has been concertmaster of Chicago's
Music of the Baroque chamber orchestra since 1970.
He is also solo violinist with the Contemporary
Chamber Players and the Rockefeller Memorial
Chapel orchestra. Mr. Golub has been a member
of the Robert Shaw Chorale orchestra and the
Seventh Army Symphony. He has toured Europe
and South America as a soloist.
MARLOU JOHNSTON is a member of Music of the
Baroque and a free-lance violinist in the
Chicago area. She is a former member of the
Lyric Opera orchestra, the Grant Park Symphony,
and has played with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra.
In addition, she was concertmaster of the Civic
Orchestra of Chicago for 5 years.
MATTHEW AIRHART is assistant professor of music
at Olivet. He is active in Kankakee as a soloist,
chamber music player, and with the Kankakee Sym
phony. A graduate of Northwestern University,
he has studied horn with Dale Clevenger of the
Chicago Symphony Orchestra. He recently founded
and conducted the Chamber Orchestra of Kankakee.

T he Orpheus C hoir, now in its fourth decad e o f annual perform ances, was founded by the late Dr. W alter
B. Larsen in 1932. Mrs. N aom i Larsen directed the choir a fter her hu sban d’s passing in 1957, and held the
conductorship until 1972.
Orpheus C h oir has represented O livet N azarene C ollege on the C en tral Educational Zone and a t many
quadrennial G en eral Assemblies o f the C hurch o f the N azarene. In M arch, 1974, the choir was selected to
perform a t the M usic Educators N ational C onference in A naheim , C alifornia. In A pril, 1976, they sang at
the N ational C ath ed ral in Washington, D .C . w hile on their “ A m erican H eritage T o u r .” T h e choir p er
form ed at the U nited States A ir Force A cadem y, C olorado, in 1977, and in M arch, 1978, they toured to
M onterrey, M exico to participate in various church concerts.
Dr. D. G eorge D unbar, conductor o f Orpheus C hoir, is professor o f music at O livet N azaren e C ollege. H e
holds the D octorate o f M usic degree from the University o f Southern C alifornia. H e also conducts the C on
cert Singers and teaches voice, conducting, and church music courses at Olivet.
O livet N azarene C ollege is a four-year liberal arts school w ith m ore than 2,1 0 0 students, and is located
fifty miles south o f C hicago in K an ka k ee, Illinois. M ost o f its students com e from the fou r m idw estem states
o f Illinois, Indiana, M ichigan, and Wisconsin to take courses fo r m ajor and minors in 43 departm ents o f
study. Dr. Leslie Parrott is president o f the school w hich was founded in 1907.

The Viking Male Chorus is carefully selected by audition from the students of
O livet Nazarene College, and represents the full range of academ ic majors and
interests. They com bine the traditionally popular sound of men's voices with the
highest standards of musicianship, creating a listening experience w hich is truly
unique.
The Vikings are in regular demand for concerts, church services, service clubs,
conventions, and television appearances. They participated in the Inaugural
Activities during the inauguration of President jim m y Carter. The 1977-78
concert season included appearances in Nassau in the Bahamas, and at Walt
Disney World, Florida.
The conductor of the group is jo e M. Noble, who holds a bachelor's degree from
Luther College, Decorah, Iowa, and holds a master's degree from the University
of Iowa. He has com pleted all work and prelims for a doctoral degree from the
University of Iowa. Mr. N oble conducts Choral Union, teaches voice and m usic
education courses at Olivet.

and is located fifty miles south of Chicago in Kankakee, Illinois. Most of its stu
dents com e from the four midwestern states of Illinois, Indiana, Michigan and

The Concert Band is Olivet's oldest musical organization, now in its 64th season.
Members are selected from the student body through audition at the beginning of the
school year.
Dr. Harlow Hopkins, chairman of the Department of Music and the Division of Fine
Arts, conducts the Concert Band and Stage Band He holds the doctorate in music
from Indiana University, Bloomington. He is in his 27th year of teaching at Olivet,
and has been director of the Concert Band for twenty-one years.

Mendelssohn's oratorio Elijah includes this aria. Here we find
Elijah discouraged and at the point of ending his life. The
Israelites have defied God, slain His prophets, and are now
seeking to take Elijah's life.

After living a life of luxury, the young Cherubino is drafted.
Figaro is feeling elation at the thought of getting Cherubino
out of his life. He proceeds to tell him in detail all the
glories of war.
Si, mi chiamano Mimi (La Boheme)
Giacomo Puccini
The poet Rudolph sits vainly, trying to write in his garret, when
there is a knock at the door. Mimi, a neighbor, needs her candle
to be relit. Rudolph is taken with the frail and appealing girl
of twenty-two. He tells her about himself and asks her, in return,
to tell him her own story. She replies in what is perhaps the most
moving self-description in all opera, the
smalldetails of herlife
as a seamstress, somehow quite adequately revealing a delicate
and tender nature.

Giacomo Pucccini
Musetta's former lover, Marcello, pretends utter indifference toward
her when the two meet in a local cafe. In an attempt to attract
his attention, she furiously smashes a plate on the ground to the
delight of the crowd which has assembled. Unabashed, Musetta
continues in one of the best known numbers of opera, "Musetta's
Waltz," making Marcello aware, in spite of considerable teasing,
that she still loves him.

The action takes place in a village In Calabrina, Italy. In the
prologue, Tonis appears before the curtain to explain to the
audience that the play that they are about to see is no fantasy
but is, as he says, "a picture of life," presenting the emotions
and passions of real men and women.

Leporello, the servant of the notorious Don Juan, explains to a
former sweetheart, Elvira, that his master's list of lady friends
in Italy, Germany, France, Turkey, and Spain is seemingly endless.

Entering from offstage and singing to himself, the merry barber
Figaro sings about his life as a jack-of-all-trades, a factotum,
whose profession gives him entry to everyone's home; thus, he is
a convenient instrument for the execution of the intrigues of
young lovers as well as old rogues. He displays his loquatious
character and the charmed life he leads in this brilliant and
exceedingly rapid aria. Everyone seems to need Figaro for some
thing and he tries to placate them all at once!

The noble knight Tannhauser, cannot find forgiveness on earth for
his sin of spending a year with the goddess Venus, so the maid
Elizabeth asks the Virgin Mary to take her as atonement. Her
faithful friend Wolfram hears her final prayer and petitions the
evening star to greet Elizabeth and guide her on her path to heaven.
