To raise awareness of the plight of the Murray, local communities have been invited to show support through participating in "Red Arm Band Day". The development of this day provides a vehicle for individuals to acknowledge and highlight that the river needs help. South Australians are encouraged to show their support by purchasing a wrist band and wearing it on Friday July 31st and across the week end of Saturday August 1st and Sunday August 2nd. Local Schools, Local Associations, Local Clubs, Small to Medium sized business, Friends and Family are encouraged to show their support by going to the www.savethemurray.com.au web site and clicking on the "River Alert" logo to order your wrist bands. Schools will find useful information to assist educating students on the environmental challenges currently faced by the river system. Along with general articles for communities. The wrist bands come in a donation box along with 50 wrist bands at a cost of $50 including delivery. The wrist Bands sell for $2 each which totals $100, resulting in your School, Association, Club or Business receiving a surplus of $50, which you are encouraged to either donate to a Local Association or Club.( e.g. this can be used to upgrade facilities). Schools could use money raised to go back into school environment programs to fund items such as • • • Rain Water tanks Water conservation products such as mulching Excursions e.g. lower lakes Please donate to the www.savethemurray.com.au foundation. 50 wrist bands = $50, 50 wrist bands x $2 = $100 Surplus of $50. Currently 12 leagues have set up a fully operational or trial models, with a further 15 leagues to be inducted and trained later in 2009 and early 2010, so that all leagues and clubs can be operational in 2010. Training sessions will be offered later in the year, with League and Club modules to present. Check out Footyweb.com.au and see what leagues have achieved to date ‐ there are some excellent examples to view. Individual leagues and clubs can establish websites within a common framework, but allowing for local community design and needs. Community Football Newsletter MAX WILLIAMS HONOURED The late Max Williams, one of the driving forces behind the Kowree‐ Naracoorte and Tatiara (KNTL) Football Leagues, was honoured when KNTFL representatives held a presentation on Saturday, May 9, to officially name the league’s headquarters after him. The creation of the headquarters in Naracoorte was a realisation of a dream held by Max and others, and the building is the envy of many leagues. Many family members attended the presentation which was held at half time of the Naracoorte versus Borders A Grade match. “We all know it takes committees and many willing workers to make a successful club or league, but in our league, it has been partly due to one man’s vision and persistence.” KNTFL stalwart Geoff Wellington said. “When Max Williams had an idea, you automatically knew it had been well‐researched, the pros and cons weighed up and was worth listening to” KNTFL President Kym Hebberman said Max was one of those rare people who was a thinker and a doer in equal measure. He said Max had dedicated many years of service to the league, as a player and in administration, and said it was fitting to recognise his contribution by re‐naming the league’s head office KNT Football and Netball League Max Williams Headquarters. EAGLES INITIATIVE TO HELP LOCAL CLUBS The Woodville‐West Torrens Football Club has taken a significant step to improve relations with its SA Amateur Football league clubs within its zone, and has pledged to offer greater support for the betterment of football. Chris Davies, who earlier this year was appointed chief executive of the Eagles after a distinguished career in banking and cricket, as a Sheffield Shield player and administrator, said he was “somewhat surprised” to learn that communication had been generally lacking between SANFL and SAAFL clubs. In a welcomed initiative, Davies last Sunday feted representatives of SAAFL clubs within the Eagles’ area – Fitzroy, Henley and Seaton Ramblers – and discussed ways to offer them greater support in the immediate future. “I came into the role (CEO) this year and there is no doubt that there is a need in my opinion for not only our club, but every SANFL club to get as close as they can to their zone clubs in the SAAFL,” Davies said. “We need to build more bridges with community clubs because without their support the SANFL players are going to do it tough; no question. Over the years Woodville‐Weest Torrens has had some reasonable relationships with SAAFL clubs, but now we need to take that to the next level so everyone in our area is able to get something out of our club. “It’s all about football. We are all working towards a common goal and that’s to be the best that we possibly can; the best football state with the best football zones wherever they may be. “We have started to do some strategic work on how we can do more for community football, not only in the metropolitan area, but in our country zone where our club has done particularly well over the years. “If you have a look at the SANFL player lists it is fair to say the Eagles have the most home‐grown players. That’s something that we pride ourselves on, and in the future we want to do even less recruiting outside of our zones. However, to do that we need to make sure we are helping the local clubs in our zones a lot more. “What we have been able to do today is get representatives from our metropolitan zone clubs to understand that we ac‐ knowledge more needs to be done to help everyone. “It is an important building block, which we hope will raise our profile in the zones and make sure that we are giving more back into the local clubs. If that involves coaching clinics and greater presence back into our zone clubs, then that is what we will do.” Davies said it made sense for SANFL clubs to work closer with amateur clubs in their zone because that was Community Football Newsletter Above— David Nelson FITZROY FC, Chris Davies EAGLES FC, David O’Sullivan HENLEY FC and Attilio Cavuoto SEATON RAMBLERS FC. from where they generally recruited their juniors and best players. “What we would like to see happen is a much closer link with the SAAFL clubs so they too benefit when players step away from league football,” Davies said. “It makes sense that, if there are close links, the league players are going to feel far more comfortable going to‐and‐from the amateur clubs. “This is not about worrying about the past; it’s about building better relationships so that football can be helped at the grassroots level with amateur clubs and a pathway is made for the players to reach the highest level possible, the AFL. It is the responsibility of all leagues and clubs to work together to help players and the game.” The initiative of the Eagles was met warmly by the SAAFL club representatives – Fitzroy president David Nelson, Henley president David O’Sullivan, and Seaton Ramblers football director Attilio Cavuoto – and agreed more could be done for the good of football. Davies said it was important for the Eagles to understand the issues at community club level, and praised Fitzroy, Henley and Seaton Ramblers for making a strong effort to develop a better line of communication between the clubs. “We see this as a positive step for the Eagles, and it must bring benefit for the local clubs,” Davies said. O’Sullivan said Henley had already taken steps to work closely with the Eagles by developing a “Shark for Life” concept whereby juniors are encouraged to reach the highest level through their SANFL club to play AFL, and once they are close to retirement re‐ turn to Henley. “We have noticed that so many players leave their community club but for whatever reason feel hesitant to return,” O’Sullivan said. “We see it as a circle, and by our players recognised as being a ‘Shark for Life’ we believe they will one day return with their family and their children will play for their local club too. “Henley has appreciated a good relationship with the Eagles in the past, and it is tremendous that they are keen to further develop that link. We have enjoyed the mutual respect we have for each other. CLEARANCE / SALARY CAP / PLAYER POINTS SYSTEM The Community Football Board are conducting a major review of the following items during 2009, so that moving forward in 2010 and beyond operations in Community Football can be as effective and smooth as possible; Clearance Regulations and Operation—an assessment of time constraints and regulations, aiming to come into line with states across Australia. This will remove the current confusion existing between interstate leagues, and will bring states onto a common time line and operation. Salary Cap and Player Points System—an assessment of the current operation and suggested improvements and adjustments moving forward. Feedback is being sort on current operations, and the suggested improvements to make. RIVERLAND 100 YEARS CELEBRATIONS The NAB Cup Game Crows v Hawthorn—March 7, saw a huge crowd in attendance with the Crows winning convincingly. The Riverland Football League launched its Centenary celebrations, with an outstanding display of memorabilia on show. Saturday May 16 saw the Riverland Football League celebrate its Centenary. It was a huge success. The Renmark oval and surrounds were picture perfect, with a crowd of 1,800 in attendance. South of The River were too strong in the early clash in the Under 18s against North of The River. A fantastic game played in great spirit saw the RFL Seconds defeat the Independents by nine points. The A Grade game North of The River v South of The River was a classic game. South of The River were out by five goals at the last break but a fast finishing North of The River with a goal after the siren resulted in a draw. A fitting result to a wonderful match. Centenary Dinner – Renmark Greek Hall was the perfect venue for the Centenary Dinner with 360 guests in attendance. M.C. for the night was the popular Bruce Mellett. The room was abuzz with remi‐ niscing and wonderful memories. The 5RM 38 Riverland Independent Champions for 38 years was announced by Nick Dillon and presented by Cheryl Lardner. Random interviews by the consummate professional Rex Fielke was another popular segment. 5RM 100 Champions for 100 years announced by Rex Fielke and presented by Cheryl Lardner had guests contemplating who would make the Team of the Century. Guest speaker, Kevin Sheedy was an inspirational speaker, captivating the large audience and later in the evening a most successful auction which he completed in record time. 5RM Team of the Century Legends highlighted the immense talent of Riverland players who went on to the SANFL, VFL and AFL. WIN TV highlights of thirty years of RFL football and the 5RM powerpoint presentation by Jade and Mick were also very popular. Community Football Newsletter Tim Jackson’s On the Couch segment with our Riverland Legends who went on to star at the high‐ est level, Neil Kerley, Russell Ebert and Mark Ricciuto (ranked in order of age)! was very popular. There was a hushed silence as three of the best shared their highlights. The 5RM Team of the Century of Local Champions announced by Rex Fielke and pre‐ sented by Cheryl Lardner drew spontaneous acclamation. These outstanding champions well and truly de‐ served the honour. A wonderful night that will long be remembered.
