Eagle Walk Stage 6
Pinegg – Steinberg am Rofan
After a good night’s sleep in Pinegg, take a
walk from Gwercherwirt Inn over the bridge
across Brandenberger Ache River and follow
Jägersteig Path all the way to Aschau, a hamlet
of Brandenberg. Take the paved road to Burgstallgraben, from where the path winds up to
Wimm, Wimmerjoch Peak and old Lahnalm
Alpine Pasture Hut. From there, walk across
Weißenbachgraben Gorge to reach the “most
beautiful end of the world”, Steinberg am
Rofan. The surroundings are so beautiful that
it is tempting to stay for a while, but use your
newfound energy and continue on the Eagle
Walk a little further: cross Steinberger Ache
River to get to Vordersteinberg, then take
Bärenwald Path through the forest to cosy
Waldhäusl Inn, where you can stay overnight.

Eagle Alpine History
Peter Habeler and Rofan Mountain Range. Peter Habeler is an Austrian mountaineer. Born in
Mayrhofen, Tirol in 1942, his accomplishments include first ascents in the Rocky Mountains,
the first European to climb the Big Walls in Yosemite National Park and an ascent of the north
face of the Eiger in a record ten hours. Habeler has also scaled the 8,000 m high peaks of Cho
Oyu, Nanga Parbat, Kangchenjunga and Hidden Peak. His most notable event was the first
ascent of Mount Everest in May 1978 without supplementary oxygen with Reinhold Messner.
Peter Habeler‘s life has been closely intertwined with the Zillertal and Rofan Mountains. As
a young man he climbed grade VI routes in the Rofan Mountains with Mathias Rebitsch, a
Brixlegg-born brilliant rock and ice climbing pioneer from the 1930s.

Steinberg am Rofan (elev. 1,010m) is nestled
between the massif of 2,195-metre Guffert Peak
and three-peak Unutz Mountain, which is belongs
to the Rofan Mountains. Enjoy wonderful views
from the cemetery in Steinberg: You will see
not only the sky, but also the Alpine glow of the
jagged Klobenjoch mountain faces of the Rofan
Mountains.

Eagle Kick
Guffert Mountain provides a rewarding grade
1 rock climbing opportunity. Its majestic barren
rocky spires may seem beyond reach, but in fact
the summit block requires only a bit of exposed
scrambling. Hot in the height of summer, this
climb is a delight in the early morning sun,
giving Guffert Mountain a brilliant glow that
makes for an enthralling start to your day.

Trail Description
Start out in Pinegg and cross Brandenberger
Ache and Steinberger Ache Creeks on two
beautiful bridges. Once across the creeks,
continue hiking up through magnificent oldgrowth forest on a hiking trail that eventually
merges onto a forest road and rejoins Jägersteig Path later, taking you to Aschau, which
is a tiny settlement of Brandenberg. Walk
along the main road until you get to “Gasthaus
Haaser” Inn and head up towards Burgstallgraben. Climbing steeply, the trail works
its way up to the last farm named “Wimm”.
Bear right after the cattle grate and follow
signage to Wimmerjoch Col, the highest
point on this walk. Soak in sweeping views;
pack a picnic lunch and take advantage of the
outstanding vista. Continue walking to the
left and downhill towards Lahnalm Alpine
Pasture Hut. Shortly before reaching the hut,

follow signage to Weißenbachgraben. Cross
Weißenbach Creek, marking the boundary
between the communities of Brandenberg
and Steinberg, and walk to Enterhof, an
imposing farmstead that offers farmstay
accommodation. Bear left and take the road
leading down into Steinberger Loch, where
you will cross Steinberger Ache Creek for
a second time. Aim right onto Hinterberg
Trail and follow it northward until you reach
Vordersteinberg. Cross the road and continue
walking along Bärenwald Trail. Stick to this
lovely trail that will take you to the destination end of this hike, Waldhäusl Inn at the
western outskirts of Steinberg. This quaint
Inn is a lovely place to spend the night.
