Bloom Spokane provides up-to-date information and resources for pregnant
women and their families in the Inland Northwest, encouraging them to know
their options, advocate for their choices, and push for the safest and best
birth possible.
We recognize birth as a normal, healthy process—not an illness or disease.
Women in our community should have the opportunity to birth instinctively
and freely, whether they choose to give birth at home, birth center or
hospital. Bloom Spokane is here to help you understand your options and to
feel confident in the choices you make.

What to Do When
Your Baby is Breech
It is perfectly normal for babies to be breech (buttocks or feet down) frequently
during pregnancy. While most babies will turn permanently head down early in
the third trimester of pregnancy, the American Academy of Pediatrics reports that
about 3% of full-term babies are breech.
When to Take Action
How Professionals Can Help
Begin to pay attention at 32–34 weeks of gestation and ask
your care provider to assess your baby’s position by ultrasound or
manual palpation. There are very few options for breech birth in
our area, but many techniques to increase the chances of turning
your baby to a head-down position before labor. Some of these are
non-medical techniques that you can do on your own. Others require
the professional services of an acupuncturist, chiropractor, midwife
or physician.
Yoga: Certain yoga poses are believed to help a breech baby turn.
These positions include kneeling on all fours with shoulders on the
ground and buttocks in the air, lying with a cushion under your pelvis to
raise your hips higher than your head and also some inverse positions.
What You Can Do at Home
Acupuncture: Moxibustion is a technique that uses the herb
mugwart (aka moxa) to stimulate the body’s energy through heat.
Visualization: Make yourself comfortable, sit or lie in a quiet place
and create a tranquil atmosphere. Relax your abdominal muscles
and focus on breathing slowly and deeply from the belly. Visualize
your baby rotating to a head-down position as a meditative practice,
especially while doing any of the exercises/positions listed below.
Posture: Maintaining good posture is one simple thing every
woman can do to encourage an optimal position for her baby. Most
of us spend a lot of time sitting in lounge chairs or with our legs
crossed, putting a strain on uterine ligaments which causes tightness
in the womb. Good posture will allow your baby the room it needs to
rotate and can alleviate many other aches and pains of pregnancy.
Swimming: Relaxing in the pool, swimming laps, turning
somersaults and doing handstands will all encourage your baby to
turn head down.
Breech Tilt: Perhaps the most popular technique for turning a
breech baby at home is the Breech Tilt or Pelvic Tilt. Lie on your
back with your head and shoulders flat on the floor. Use pillows
and cushions to elevate your hips 9 to 12 inches above your head.
Alternately, you can lay inverted on a flat board with the footend
resting securely on a low piece of furniture such as a sofa. This and
a plethora of other techniques used to coax babies into the optimal
birth position are further explained at spinningbabies.com.

2013 Birth & Beyond Resource Guide
HypnoBirthing Visualization & Scripting: HypnoBirthing
is a prepared childbirth education class that focuses on relaxation,
breathing techniques, and releasing fears. Hypnobirthing also has a
technique that is highly effective in turning breech babies.
Chiropractic: The Webster Technique is a chiropractic analysis and
adjustment used to establish balance in the pregnant woman’s pelvis
and reduce undue stress to her uterus and supporting ligaments. This
balanced state in the pelvis makes it easier for a breech baby to turn.
Craniosacral Bodywork: Craniosacral massage is an alternative
medicine therapy which involves the therapist placing their hands on
the patient, allowing them to “tune into the craniosacral rhythm.”
Homeopathy: Pulsatilla has long been used to change unfavorable
presentations prior to the onsetof labor, though you will want to
consult your care provider or a homeopath for dosing instructions.
External Cephalic Version: In this procedure, performed by a
doctor or midwife, hands are placed on the mother’s abdomen around
the baby. The baby is moved up and away from the pelvis and gently
turned in several steps from breech to a head first presentation.
When Nothing Works
Some babies remain breech, no matter what you try. There may be a
reason, such as a short cord, preventing your baby from turning and
nothing you can do to change the fact. At this point, you and your
care provider should assess the risks and benefits of vaginal birth and
c-section. Should you choose a cesarean, it is an option that you go into
labor on your own before surgery. Natural labor prepares the baby to
be born and helps him or her withstand the stress of birth, and prevents
prematurity. Some babies even turn head-down during labor.
. .. EDUCATING THE WHOLE CHILD ...
Inspired by Waldorf education and its commitment to childhood
Parent & Toddler Mornings Meeting one morning each week, children (ages 1-3)
and their caregivers come together to experience the magic and wonder of early childhood. The
teacher leads the class through a comforting daily rhythm of explorative play and creative work.
Songs, finger plays, movement games and puppet stories support language and motor development.
Natural playthings nourish the child’s senses and budding imagination, and adults cultivate their own
creativity through a variety of craft opportunities. Preparation of our shared meal together imbues
the child with a sense of purpose and creates community. Several times a year during evening
meetings parents gather to deepen their knowledge of child development, and join with the whole
of our Windsong community for joyful seasonal festivals. School tours begin in March!
