JOHN RULE SPRING 2011
Published to accompany the new album and to coincide with
the the spring tour. “The pictures in this book were all taken
on tour. I wanted to put out a book of tour photos. Touring
is strange in that: a) It involves a nomadic, peripatetic daily
existence; b) It solely involves anonymous spaces (hotel
rooms, backstage areas, airports); c) It involves complete
isolation (hotel rooms) juxtaposed with complete immersion
in seas of people; d) Only about 2% of being on tour involves
anything even remotely glamorous. I hope that somehow in
these pictures I’m able to convey the mundanity of touring,
juxtaposed with those moments of the strange and/or
sublime. I also love the vacuum-like aesthetic of touring.
99% of the time on tour you find yourself in completely lifeless environments (hotel rooms, dressing rooms, airports),
and then all of a sudden you’re surrounded by thousands and
thousands of people”. MOBY

Photographer and painter, Yelena Yemchuk is most commonly known
for her fashion and portrait photographs. Yet her personal work, usually
shot on a 35mm camera while traveling around the globe, has rarely been
seen. On one such trip to her hometown of Kiev, Ukraine, Yemchuk visited
Gidropark, an island on the Dnieper River that she frequented as a girl.
Taken over three summers between 2005 and 2008, Yemchuk captures
life on the beaches, sports grounds and woodlands of Gidropark as only
she can portray it. Families, stripped down to their bathing suits (or even
less) enjoying a picnic, take on a Felliniesque quality through her lens.
Yelena Yemchuk was born in Kiev, and immigrated to the United States
with her parents when she was eleven. She has contributed to Italian
Vogue, Japanese Vogue, Another, The New Yorker and The New York Times.

About Skin presents nearly 50 full-page photographs by the ItalianJordanian photographer Mustafa Sabbagh. Along with photos of
landscapes, fashion, and still lifes, his portraits reveal, the book’s true
theme: human skin. In fact, by avoiding the now common practice of
photo retouching-up, Sabbagh highlights the natural imperfections of the
epidermis. About Skin therefore unveils a theory of moles, scars, reddened
skin, veins, wrinkles, stretch marks, signs left by clothing: an atlas that,
on the one hand, refers the observer to North European painting from the
1500s and 1600s (for example, Dutch still lifes and Nordic Renaissance
portraits) and, on the other, to contemporary photos by Wolfgang
Tillmans, Jurgen Teller, and Rineke Dijkstra. Mustafa Sabbagh was born in
Amman, Jordan. For several years, he was Richard Avedon’s assistant in
London. He has been based in Italy since 1979. His work has appeared in
Arena, The Face, Vogue Italia, l’Uomo Vogue, Rodeo, Gasby, Front, Kult, Sport
& Street.

I am Cuban is an exploration of the largely undocumented life of the Cuban
people. Travelling extensively in Cuba between 2007 and 2009, Helena’s
work contrasts with the well-known images of an isolated, decaying
Cuba to highlight a cross-section of Cubans in startlingly earnest and
evocative portraits. Helena fixes her lens on segments of society hidden
from view – prostitutes, gays, transvestites, punk rockers and swingers.
For them, Helena’s camera became both a safe haven and a stage. While
not a political statement, the images acknowledge the contemporary
Cuban reality of pervasive poverty in weary faces, young and old. Four
Cuban writers, whose interpretations of the images are creative pieces
in their own right, have enriched this collection: Alejandro Hernandez,
Lemis Tarajano Noya, Miguel Arguelles, Romina Ruiz-Goiriena. Born in
1978 to Polish and Portuguese immigrants in London, Helena began her
early career working with Arnold Newman, whose iconic environmental
portraiture was an influence on this body of work.

Mark Wyse’s new book is a photographic commingling of his own
photographs with reproductions of work by other artists and illustrators.
For Wyse, this gesture creates a form for investigating the space
between pictures — enabling viewers to move beyond the subjects of the
photographs and into the thoughts behind them. Wyse’s work attempts to
make visible the underlying, often-repressed discourses contained both
within images and between artists. The image is both connected to and
displaced from its maker. For Wyse, “The photographic image is intimate
and defensive at the same time. The photograph is less a representation
of the world than a representation of a thought that reflects a relationship
to the world. The paradox is that we see the world, but feel the thought.”
Mark Wyse lives and works in Los Angeles. His work can be found in The
Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles; The Metropolitan Museum
of Art, New York; Yale University Art Museum; and The Los Angeles
County Museum of Art.

Alex Fakso, a prominent artist in the contemporary street art scene,
started photographing at the age of thirteen when he got hold of a camera
in order to record his own “pieces” on trains. Since then, he has never
stopped rubbing shoulders with the underworld. Fast or Die came to life
after four years of travelling around the world, from London to the US, and
as far as Russia and Japan. Metropolitan narratives are immortalized in 60
shots: portraits of people running, taking the subway, sleeping on docks,
sneaking into tunnels. Fakso follows his subjects, taking part in the action,
moving along with them, following them until he manages to document
instants and moments of their days, thus creating snapshots that contain
stories, details and sensations. Here Fakso expands his view beyond
graffiti. Fast or Die is a powerful photo strip describing the world through
the subways.

JOHN RULE SPRING 2011
San Francisco photographer Marcia Lieberman hiked through South
Wales photographing a collection of ancient stones the size of small
giants. Older than Stonehenge, these stones were placed in their current
locations more than 4000 years ago, and since then, have not been
moved. Lieberman writes, “The stones were massive – some of them
fifteen feet above the ground (another 5 feet below)…Respected and
protected by the community, the maenhir (the Welsh name for such
singular stones) stood and waited. I found the isolation and singularity of
the maenhir compelling and idiomatic. In fact, it is not known why they
exist, or how they got there. ”Lieberman sat with a stone for hours, and
captured the silent presence and particular character of each one. Marcia
Lieberman is a San Francisco based photographer. Her work has appeared
in Esquire, Vogue, Glamour, Mirabelle, Elle. She has lectured at the
University of California, Berkeley, and is a lay-ordained zen practitioner.

If you’re in the high mountains you can contemplate clouds closer up and
have the impression that they navigate in the atmosphere like ships in a
storm. If you’re at sea and a storm’s blowing up, you can do what Mario
Vidor did and explore cirrus and cumulus, cumulus and nimbi, nimbi
layers, and point the prow of your sailing or motor boat to the nearest
port. If you’re in a plane that enters a cumulus of clouds the aircraft drops
and rises; don’t worry, nothing will happen; as soon as you land browse
Mario’s book and heave a relaxing sigh of relief. Mario Vidor was born
in 1948 in Farra di Soligo, Italy. He has had many exhibitions in Italy,
Beijing, New York and Vancouver. Fascinated by painting and the great
artists of the 20th century, his works show interest both in contemporary
landscapes and in the balance and harmony of the human body.
The Possible Equation
Giovanni Cecchinato
The Possible Equation features portraits of the cancer patients of the The
AVAPO in Mestre. The reality of their lives has been introduced to us
in a simple, direct and unrhetorical way. We can see how we can talk
about the unmentionable disease with dignity and serenity. Giovanni
Cecchinato was born in Mestre, Venice in 1961 and became a professional
photographer in 2003. Since then he has begun to work in different fields
like art and trade and with the “Possible Equation” in the social one as well.
In 2009 he was awarded the special prize “Menzione d’onore” at the TAU
VISUAL National Photographic Award in the category “Architecture and
Interior Design”. He has worked with important photographers including
Andreas Bitesnich, Antonin Kratochvil and Bob Sasha. He has worked with
important “brands” of the fashion world and he has run workshops on
digital photography.

JOHN RULE SPRING 2011
“The intransigence of the Sri Lankan state and the failure of both Sinhalese
and Tamil political imagination has plunged Sri Lanka into over two decades
of civil war. This compounded with social unrest and repression amongst
our people has led to enormous pain and suffering and to the destruction of
our social fabric. It affects the way we live, the way we love and the way we
interact with one another. Violence has become the first means of resolving
disputes and a tolerance of violence an aspect of everyday life. Stephen
Champion captures this Sri Lankan nightmare in haunting detail, of a rich
and sophisticated civilization in the throes of violent upheaval. He shows
us the pain in our faces, the material destruction of our environment and
the callousness that has come to engulf our lives. But all is not lost. For in
the midst of this violence, in the intensity of our hatreds, there is the basic
humanity of our people. Champion understands this tension between our
hatred and our humanity, between our violence and our compassion. That is
why his pictures move us in an intimate way.” Dr Radhika Coomaraswamy

In this book, devoted to the Italian film-maker,Bernardo Bertolucci, the art
of photography is used to convey the emotion of cinema. The photographs
taken on the set by four leading scene photographers, Angelo Novi,
Severine Brigeot, Alessia Bulgari and Maria Ludovica Parolini, together
with a selection of movie stills, retrace Bertolucci’s career, offering an
unusual look from behind the scenes of his most famous works from
The Grim Reaper (1962), through The Conformist, Before the Revolution,
Last Tango in Paris, Little Buddha and The Last Emperor, to his last film The
Dreamers (2003). The images viewed in sequence reveal a unity of intent,
an attempt to grasp the poetic essence of a cinema rich in multiple visual,
literary and pictorial suggestion. We see a discourse taking shape, on
time and how it is perceived, a fundamental idea of Bertolucci’s cinema.
With an introduction by the curator and cinema critic Marcello Garofalo,
complete with biographic notes and updated filmography.

This work, published on the occasion of the 9 th Lyon Biennale de
Photography, brings together the work of twenty photographers in order
to provide a narrative of contemporary America. “Since the upheaval
of September 11th, America appears to photographic observation in a
different light, with its doubts and its fragilities, with the emergence of
unpredictable political, cultural or social mythologies, like virgin territory
waiting to be mapped out. And in the hands of new professionals capable
of reviving a living documentary tradition, and of absorbing and thereafter
surpassing and refining the previous theories of aesthetics, this must be
taken into account.” From the preface by Gilles Mora. Includes work by
Nina Berman, Andrew Bush, Elinor Carucci, Jessica Dimmock, Paul Fusco,
Elizabeth Heyert, Alex Maclean, Suzanne Opton, Martin Schoeller, Andrea

Han Lei was born in 1967 and is one of the most important young
photographic artists in China. His work is a perfect combination of both
conceptual and documenting aspects which are two major functions
of photography as a tool for artistic creation. Han Lei’s achievement
in photography hardly matches his young age. Starting in 1985, he
started using black and white photos to record the daily life of Northern
China, which later became an important part in China’s self-image of
that period of time in history. After 2000, Han Lei start working with
conceptual photography, by posing photography, which has also become
an essential episode in Chinese contemporary art. In China, the success
of documentation photography is usually by ascetic practices and
opportunities, while success of conceptual photography is reached by
talent and mind. The perfect composition which is in Han Le’s work is rare.

This book, published to coincide with an exhibition at the
Royal Academy of Arts, London, looks at the relationship
between the work of leading contemporary artists and
fashion. Aware – Art Fashion Identity reflects upon the
relationship between our physical covering and constructed
personal environments, our individual and social identities
and the contexts in which we live. The book looks at the
role of clothing in cultural and personal stories through the
work of about 30 artists. Issues of belonging and nationality,
displacement and political and social confrontation are
addressed in the work of Yinka Shonibare, Sharif Waked,
Alicia Framis, Meschac Gaba, Dai Rees and Vito Acconci. The
importance of performance in the presentation of fashion and
clothing, and in highlighting the roles that we play in our daily
life, is explored through the work of Hussein Chalayan, Gillian

The Stocking Book explores the astonishing variety of stockings from the
eighteenth century to the present, the way great painters made use of
them, the way illustrators and cartoonists made use of them, the way
advertisements depicted them, and the way the shape has developed,
from the wind-sock in an airfield to the geography of Italy, to the stocking
hung from the mantlepiece waiting for Santa Claus. Ranging from the
shapeless utilitarian woollen stocking suddenly transformed by being
black or allowed to droop erotically down the leg, to the breathtaking
sheen of silk stockings drawn tight over the leg, held in place by an
elaborate garter or garter-belt, silk being replaced in recent years by nylon
or rayon, enlivened in certain decades by a central seam in the back of
the leg, a tiny monogram or a variety of colours in the sheer quality of the
transparent material, listed in deniers.

This volume documents five hundred items of costume jewellery made
in the United States from 1930 to the present day, from the collection of
Patrizia Sandretto Re Rebaudengo: necklaces, bracelets, brooches and
earrings made with non-precious materials, metal alloys and coloured
crystals, in some cases inspired by the styles and shapes of traditional
jewellery, though more often unique and innovative creations. It was the
Depression of 1929-1939, that saw a boom in costume jewellery. With the
disappearance of luxury products, experimentation with non-precious
materials became the only way of survival for the jewellers. The catalogue
reveals the historical and social context which led to the development
of costume jewellery, with illustrations and brief informative entries that
show how these objects became part of the history of the decorative
arts in the United States in the twentieth century. Artists include: Trifari,
Marcel Boucher, Coro, De Rosa, Eisenberg, Miriam Haskell, Eugene Joseff
and Wendy Gell.

Over the centuries, the women of the remote villages on the
mountains of Daghestan in the North-East Caucasus have
embroidered fabrics with silk to celebrate births, weddings
and deaths. These works of art are named “kaitags” and
soon began attracting the interest of art merchants and
collectors. Of the few hundred kaitags that survive to this
day, this book illustrates 65 pieces, some of them previously
unknown, selected from prestigious European collections.
The book includes a photo-documentary by English
reseacher and traveller, Bob Chencine, widely credited with
introducing Kaitag to the western world. Essays and articles
by authors of different cultural backgrounds, as well as the
extraordinary photographs, offer readers a comprehensive
and exhaustive overview of an artistic discovery that up to
now has been restricted to a few fortunate connoisseurs

“Like all artists, Tom’s stock-in-trade is to see what others
overlook, to capture the essence of something that eludes
the rest of us. With these photographs, he has done just
that. He has succeeded in looking beyond the aluminum,
steel and paint portrayed by the calendar photographers,
to capture the true soul of these aircraft- a soul that is
inseparable from the men that flew them in combat. These
images are powerful because they.. pay tribute to the men
who took them into battle, and they capture the emotion of
an era that was routinely characterized by desperate life and
death struggles” -William E. Hamilton - Former Planes of

Cold and ruthless offensive tools, Japanese swords have earned their own
metaphysical dimension in the public imagination, becoming real cult
objects and evolving into a noble and fascinating icon of oriental art and
culture. Nipponto looks at the Japanese sword first of all focussing, on the
evolution of swords throughout the different eras of Japanese history. It
then looks at the mythical dimension, evoking tales of unbreakable and
incredibly sharp blades, of ghosts and deities, of swordsmiths who had
become themselves a Japanese “living national treasure”, on a par with
swords, still being treasured with respect and veneration. It includes
hundreds of gorgeous and previously unreleased colour photographs of
blades, mountings and accessories. The picture is completed by several
historical reference tables, a particularly rich glossary and a series of
theorical and practical indications, so to help the reader feel at home
within the enthralling yet complex international market of Japanese
swords. Sergio Magotti teaches Iaido and other disciplines related to the
traditional Japanese Budo in his dojo.

and prestigious testimonies of its past: the necropolis of
Hegra, a smaller version of Petra inscribed on the UNESCO
World heritage list, Mecqua, the fortress of Teima which
shows strong Mesopotamian and Egyptian influence as well
as the Dedan site which is characterized by monumental
sculpture of Ptolemaïc inspiration. Temples and palaces
decorated with frescoes, monumental sculptures and on a
smaller scale precious dishes and jewellery fill the pages of

Lapita is the name of a civilisation which colonized a 4000km spread of
islands in the Southwest Pacific during the second millenium B.C. The
Lapita people introduced the Austronesian family of languages into this
part of the world and also brought with them a very strong and specific
ceramic tradition. Lapita pottery is characterized by great homogeneity,
and by the use of mostly geometric and anthropomorphic ornaments.
Because these pottery cultures constitute a coherent group they have
been used as archaeological markers in order to evaluate the progressive
spreading of Austronesian speaking populations in the Southwest Pacific.
This factor, added to the exceptional quality of the ornaments explains
the vivid interest of researchers and of the public for the Lapita culture
and arts.

This catalogue documents works of African art from private Italian
collections, most of which have never been seen before in public.
Masks, altar figures, fetishistic objects, funeral altar pieces, ritualistic
and everyday objects; works of outstanding aestethic beauty, capable
of leading straight into the heart of the Sub-Saharan African culture,
the costumes, lifestyles, from Mali to Congo and from Ivory Coast to
Cameroon. An occasion to discover a little known heritage that in Italy
has attracted passionate collectors. This book analyses certain aspects
of great anthropological interest linked to these objects, and looks back
at the experience of the Italian travellers, scholars and art historians
who knew how to bring together these exotic collections. The catalogue
includes essays and a bibliography with a DVD.

This book accompanies an exhibition at Mart in Rovereto, dedicated to
the sculptures of the celebrated artist Amadeo Modigliani born in Livorno
in 1884, who lived in Paris until his early death in 1920. It was between
1911-1913 that Modigliani abandoned painting and took up sculpture,
developing a synthesis between tradition elements and original concepts
of figuration. He was inspired by ancient sculpture, as well as oriental
and tribal art, following on the research of Picasso and Brancusi. These
works of art, even today relatively little known, have not been properly
considered by critics, often considering only his activity as a painter.
The volume, which is a result of six years of research and historical
investigations, fills this gap. It attempts to redefine an aspect that was
central to the artist, often seen as “more a sculptor than a painter”. With
contemporary reviews, this collection documents the critical reception
of these works of art, and discusses the questions raised by Modigliani’s
reputuation.

At the beginning of the 20th Century, Europe was going through a
transitional period in the visual arts. All eyes turned towards Paris where
Fauvism was in full flower. Under the impetus of Henri Matisse and
other major figures like Maurice Vlaminck, Theo Van Dongen, Albert
Marquet and Georges Braque, Hungarian artists too took to the use of
large flat areas of bright colours. From 1905, Hungarian artists such as
Robert Bereny, Bela Czobel, Vilmos Perlrott Csaba and Geza Bornemisza
regularly participated in the Paris salons. In the summers they returned to
the Nagybanya artists colony, Nyergesujfalu or Budapest and introduced
a new painterly approach which was soon to appear on the walls of
Budapest galleries. This book brings together some fifty works from major
Hungarian museums and private collections.

The Panza collection, considered the most important nucleus of American
contemporary art of the post-war period present in Europe, was founded
thanks to the intuition and vision of Giuseppe Panza di Biumo who, from
the 1950s applied his talent to acquiring works by some of the leading
artists of the century. Among these were Franz Kline, Donald Judd, Mark
Rothko, Roy Lichtenstein and Robert Rauschenberg. In line with the
new currents emerging in contemporary art, this prestigious collection
expanded during the 1960s and 1970s, with a nucleus of Conceptual Art
including, amongst others, works by Robert Barry, Hanne Darboven, Jan
Dibbets, Hamish Fulton, Robert Irwin, Joseph Kosuth, Sol LeWitt, David

The Liverpool Biennial International Festival of Contemporary Art is the
largest and one of the most exciting contemporary visual arts events in
the UK. It was founded by James Moores (with Jane Rankin Read, Lewis
Biggs and Bryan Biggs) in 1998. The 6th liverpool biennial was entitled
Touched. Touched presents affective art – art that moves us in mind, body
and soul – and so becomes a sketch map of the affections: passion, rage,
lust, pleasure, fear and joy. The Biennial had several indoor and outdoor
venues in Liverpool and, in consideration of the fact that some projects
were conceived by the artists so that they would grow and change over
the ten week duration, the catalogue is being published after the Biennial
closes. The curatorial team includes: Lorenzo Fusi, Peter Gorschlüter,
Patrick Henry, Sara-Jayne Parsons, Mike Stubbs and Mark Waugh.

This book, published in conjunction with the exhibition in Bari,
is dedicated to the Greek-born artist, Jannis Kounellis, a leading
representative of the tendency defined by critic Germano Celant as
“Poor Art”. A large part of the work of Jannis Kounellis, an undisputed
protagonist of an art that revolutionized the language of painting starting
in the 1960s, is intimately bound up with the contexts for which it was
created. This is the case with the show held in the Teatro Margherita and
Piazza del Ferrarese in Bari, amply documented in this book together
with a selection of his major international exhibitions from 1967 to 2010.
Kounellis determinedly reaffirms once again the need for a striving for the
epic in the definition of the forms, revealing in this way how essential art
is to contemporary society for its function of investigating reality. With a
critical text by Bruno Cora and a biography of the artist.

The first international monograph on Arturo Casanova (Caserta,
Campania, Italy 1966). Casanova, born near Naples, belongs to the
generation of artists who have broken down the walls between the various
artistic disciplines to work in an interdisciplinary manner in diverse
media including painting, sculpture, drawing, photography, video, and
site-specific installations. His work figured prominently in the exhibition
Monocromos at the MNCARS Museo Nacional Reina Sofía (Madrid
2004) in the context of the history of art of a single colour from Malevich
to the present. Since then he has continued his exploration of the work
of art as a medium of contemplation, an oasis of peace and serenity
in a world of cacophonous media-generated chaos. As internationally
acclaimed art historian and critic Dr Barbara Rose has said, “This illusion
of light emanating mysteriously from within the work of art gives the
monochrome special significance as a metaphor of illumination.”

Recovering an artist lost in the early ‘60s, this is the first international
publication on Francesco LoSavio (Rome 1935 – Marseille 1963).The late
1950s, before the blossoming of minimal and conceptual art, was the
setting for unclassifiable and visionary proposals that oblige us to rethink
our interpretation of the avant-garde as a whole. The intense career of Lo
Savio took place at that time. His work over the course of just five years
shows both the influence of informalism and his interest in the spatial
conception embodied in his Filtri and Spazio luce series. In his final
works, the Metalli and Articolazioni Totali, he explores the interaction
between artist and society through industrial design and architecture.
In his experimentation with space, use of materials, forms and light, and
the relation with the viewer’s body, the artist / architect crosses and
combines different paths in modern art’s development.

Representing the sad, comical and the seemingly trivial minutiae of
everyday life in pie charts, flow charts and other forms of visual data
sorting, New York-based artist Andrew Kuo transforms the idlest of days
into a witty analysis in color and pattern. Among the many itemizations
he has rendered into charts: “Some Things I am Scared of in November
2007”; “My Ideal Slacker Tuesday on March 27, 2008”; “Being Accused of
Being an Asshole (Via Instant Messager) on June 21, 2009.” The brilliance
and charm of these works lies not only in their balance of what might be
called “cool content in geek form”, but also in the criteria and gradations
they measure. Kuo’s obsessive charts, which resemble Op art, Concrete
art or the abstractions of Josef Albers have reached a wide audience
through his music reviews for The New York Times.

In this project Matteo Basilè has measured himself against one of the
greatest masterpieces of late Florentine gothic art, the Battaglia di San
Romano by Paolo Uccello (1397–1475). This book proposes a series of
photos inspired by the celebrated triptych that commemorated the victory
of Florentine troops over the Sienese-Milanese in 1432. In the paintings by
the Florentine artist all seems immobile, ready for the final act. This is the
“still image,” which led Matteo Basilé to create the successive frame. In
the Battaglia di San Romano, Paolo Uccello experimented for the first time
with revolutionary perspective techniques that create multiple viewpoints
within a single scene. The works in This humanity are based on the same
rules of perspective but realized with digital and 3D photo techniques.
Matteo Basilé, considered one of the main exponents of European digital
art has for ten years now wed digital culture with classic iconography,
reinventing the idea of the portrait.

Up to now, the exuberant corporeality, for example in the unabashed
depictions of copulation, with the addition of a style redolent of a
duel fought between Lucien Freud and Francis Bacon, was sufficient
to characterise the work of the New York-based British painter Cecily
Brown. This has caused quite a stir in recent years and has garnered her
a good deal of attention. The new pictures exhibited for the first time
at the Kestnergesellschaft Hannover, all of which are illustrated in this
book, appear familiar enough in their characteristic painterly style and
colour pallete, but all of sudden the object of the artist’s attention would
seem to have shifted. She now permits the viewer a the satisfaction of a
broadbased abstraction, augmenting her explosively human expression
with moments of free observability that have complemented the
meaningfulness of her work and have – one almost has the feeling that it
would also be a logical consequence – helped her move forward.

Whereas the comprehensive retrospective staged last year by the
Kunst- und Ausstellungshalle in Bonn was devoted to the sculpture
and painting of this distinguished artist, this catalogue of an exhibition
at the Kunstforum der Ostdeutschen Galerie in Regensburg presents
examples from the graphic work combining excellent drawings with
small sculptures. Anybody taking a closer look can immediately see that
these graphic works are among Marcus Lupertz’s most beautiful. The
oftentimes coarse and heroic, the consciously added mutilation or antique
finish of his “great works” is missing here, the repertoire of forms is more
direct, more immediate. The drawing and sculpture conduct an intimate
dialogue which occasionally can disclose information more precicely
about the internal dynamic/tension in Markus Lupertz’s work, than
perhaps the so-called major, finished works may wish to do. Thus Andrea
Madesta has succeeded with her selection in creating an individual view
of Markus Lupertz’s work, indeed to a certain extent, an updating.

This extraordinary book relates to an extraordinary exhibition, which
Susanne Pfeffer curated at the Kunstwerken Berlin at the end of 2010.
The problem with perception, its extraordinarily important function for
art, is not always easy to represent and yet immediately apparent, for
lots of artists like to hide. It is therefore all the more illuminating in those
cases when, with a skilled hand and as part of a clever concept, a few
incisive, calibrated examples are able to describe the problem. This can
be, quite literally, the pure tension of thermometry (John Baldessari), the
tactile sensation of an invisible, but lively surface (Javier Téllez), it can
be short, acute pain caught on film (Harun Farocki), but also eloquently
simple, painterly shadows (Luc Tuymans); and all of this plays with our
imagination and our experience of perception with varying intensity. The
book includes a series of short texts by Solakov, Zink Yi, Allais, Godard,
Jaar, and Snyder, and an essay by Lambert Wiesinger.

JOHN RULE SPRING 2011
During the past five years Florin Kompatscher has, on the one hand,
discovered a remarkable balance between surreal metaphor and
special depth of field in his oil paintings, and, on the other, an abstract
concentration as well as a resolution. In so doing, he actually maintains a
difficult equilibrium here, which also holds for his pictures that perpetually
carry over the memory of the familiar into a dream-like liminal moment.
Of course, anyone so inclined can forage in these paintings for quotations,
for traces of Dali, Magritte, Tanguy, perhaps even Caspar David Friedrich.
However, whosoever wants to see how a particular terrain, believed to
be exhausted, can be revitalised for a new and concomitantly surprising
abstraction, can partake in this stirring engagement of form and colour.
The book itself demonstrates this almost in exemplary fashion and is
strictly removed from any form of weary didacticism—as such, a battle
of pure painting—to such an extent that it is scarcely possible to imagine
anything more beautiful.

Siegfried Anzinger has undertaken a radical departure with his new oil
paintings and sculptures. In particular, he has broken with his trademark
impasto application of paint, his particular pictorial way of figurative
representation, his occasionally resonantly Italianate colour pallete, in
short: with painting as painterly thinking. The effect is quite literally like
a brilliant light suddenly shining brightly. Now, for example, Siegfried
Anzinger applies the background tones quickly and in diluted form, and
out of the detail of, say, an upward looping motion, he builds up something
epic in a set of clearly stacked layers. Thus the figures and scenes have, up
to now, received our attention in a seemingly enclosed space, not unlike a
chamber drama. Siegfried Anzinger has now torn open the curtains with
his new style of painting and has set up a new stage for them. In so doing
a painterly panorama is opened up in which hitherto the epic works by
David, Delacroix or Gerricault have invited us to dream.

Hard-edged realism determines Sergej Vutuc’s black and white
photographs, but at the same time, it is possible to see the influence
of hazardous acrobatics. All of this is for a reason: Sergej Vutuc’s
involvement of the skater scene is visceral. He has followed it for years
in his photographic work. Thus an imposing body of photographs has
arisen, which, for the first time in this book, enables a particular dynamic
to develop which has been instigated by the photographer himself
though his selection and over all design. In this way, the truly sensational
aspect of this predominantly youth/underground phenomenon is given
proper emphasis. Sergej Vutuc takes photographs, runs a gallery, as
well as he is the editor of a variety of Fan- and Art-zines that veer at
times more towards the artistic and then more towards the skaterly.
He was directing and acting in the Skateboarding theatre performance
Skateboard series 1–3.

This catalogue is dedicated to publishing the latest works of Chen Ke from
the past two years. Exploring personal experiences and feelings has been
a consistent theme in the artist’ work. This time, drawing on the novels of
the same name, Hard-Boiled Wonderland and the End of the World, Chen
Ke summarizes his contemplation about life and art. Critical review, artist
statement, and interviews are also included to present strong narrative
for her work. Chen Ke graduated from Sichuan Fine Arts Institute,
Chongqing, in 2003. Working mainly as a painter, various images of little
girls, representing the core of human nature, run like a thread through her
works. Even though references to cartoon art are obvious, when analyzing
her works in more details, elements of Western master artists as well
as of traditional Chinese paintings become visible, creating an exciting
tension.
JOHN RULE SPRING 2011
History never disappoints us with amazing necessity. In China,1979
witnessed both the introduction of the opening up policy and the opening
ceremony of the first Star Exhibition, marking to some extent a new stage
in Chinese history in which our social life would go with our culture hand
in hand. Thanks to the enormous effort made by several generations over
the last thirty years, social progress and new art in China is becoming
the focus of worldwide attention. From Modernism in the 1980s to the
political and cultural turn in the wake of the market economy in the 1990s
to the unprecedented and complex social context in the first decade of the
21st century in particular, Chinese contemporary art is featuring different
version of modernity from the West — it is of vital importance in the
present global order where cultural differences need to be mainitained.

Dong Wensheng focuses on the re-discovery of the aesthetics that
originate from the Jiangnan region. His practice criss-crosses freely
between photography, installation and experimental film, and he
ingeniously uses elements that symbolize what one would consider as
representations of Chinese traditional culture, such as “garden”, “rock”,
“tattoo”, “skeleton”, “moss”, etc. From the early backyard garden and still
life series, to the more recent photographs that utilize human bones as
his main subject, Dong’s work has evolved from focusing mainly on the
mysterious, the surreal, and sometimes the bizarrely and sexually-charged
situations, to an abstract meditation on philosophical questionings such
as time, existence, and nothingness. Dong’s work uses a naturalistic style
to express the entanglement between a contextualized tradition and a
globalized contemporary society that is under development.

Hung Liu: Great Granary
Wu Hung et al
“Hung Liu: Great Granary” catalogues not only this important artist’s
exhibition at the New Beijing Art Gallery in 2008, but, through a
penetrating essay and an extended interview by curator Wu Hung, it
also chronicles the journeys of the artist and her art from China to the
US (in 1984) and back. This is the story of one of China’s pioneering
women artists, whose groundbreaking 1981 mural - “Music of the Great
Earth” - at Beijing’s Central Academy of Fine Art (CAFA) is remembered
by a generation of Chinese artists, including Xu Bing, Sui Jianguo, Liu
Xiaodong, Yu Hong, Li Songsong, who contribute short essays to this
book. “Hung Liu: Great Granary” celebrates the artist’s return to her
homeland, placing her in the rightful context of its revolutionary history.
Hung Liu was born in Changchun, China in 1948, growing up under the
Maoist regime. She immigrated to the US in 1984 and currently lives in
Oakland and is a tenured professor in the art department at Mills College.

The world of Miao Xiaochun is a virtual one – a world wholly generated
on a computer. It confronts the viewer with a smooth, perfect world full
of riddles, wonders, secrets, and a coloristic subtlety in every way equal
to the persuasive powers of the old masters. Indeed the attraction of
his photographic works and 3-D animations is situated in their seeming
naturalness that arises due to Miao Xiaochun’s embrace of cultures old
and new. As in a crossover, Miao Xiaochun not only relates the ancient,
almost-lost China to the Super-modernity of the great metropolises, but
he also brings the old European culture in the form of its iconic, canonical
works into relation with possible conditions of the present and the
future. Past – present – future: in Miao’s photo-projections they become
simultaneous, possible configurations and thereby offer the viewer new
opportunities to interpret and become absorbed in the narrative and in the
future.

JOHN RULE SPRING 2011
From 2006 to 2009, the Chinese artist Ouyang Chun, born in Beijing in
1974, painted a series comprising 30 large-scale paintings and gave it the
title 王 (“King”). Deploying an amazing variety of painterly techniques,
the pictures tell episodes from the life of a king, about his victories and his
defeats, about love and death. History and fiction, the quest for beauty
and the representation of moral failing all mix together in paintings rich in
figures and executed in minute detail. Some of the tableaux pictures are
over six meters long, and the fascination they exercise is reinforced by the
use of gold leaf and gilt bronze. This volume is published in conjunction
with the exhibition of the same title in the me Collectors Room, Berlin
2010, and in the Vienna Belvedere in 2011. The introduction is by the art
historian, Dr. Margrit Brehm. It is printed in five colors – the fifth a special
gold finish rendering the delicate surfaces of the paintings into the book.

Roland Fischer’s work represents a clearing of the space of photography.
By clearing (lichtung), we mean both a place where light can enter – a
privileged idea of the poet Paul Clean and of Heidegger – and the act of
creating an opening, conceptually or physically. The light Fischer brings
is to the relation of photography and its objects. The space he creates is a
realm of independent appearances, in which the visual disposition of the
image takes precedence over its source. This brings us, as viewers, into
a new relation with reality-based images, and with representation itself.
It is the central reason why Fischer can argue that, in some fundamental
way, he is not a photographer. He has used photography to transcend
photography. Roland Fischer lives and works in Munich and Beijing.
His works can be found in many collections, including the Musee d’art
Moderne in Paris.

Wang Shugang: Bronzes
Gregor Jansen
In his latest group of sculptures, Beijing artist Wang Shugang depicts male
figures playing with Qigong balls or perhaps birds. The bronzes depict
a typical Beijing street scene, a restful, peaceful image that can often
be seen in mornings and evenings in the few remaining old districts of
the metropolis. The high degree of realism in these works describes a
reflection of such scenarios in the midst of an otherwise dominant highspeed urbanization, a reflection that seems rather old-fashioned, while at
the same time quite congenial. The sculptor Wang Shugang, born in 1960
in Beijing, lived 10 years in Germany and returned to China in 2000. In the
last nine years, Wang has developed some sculptural basic types, which
apparently emanate from the figuration of the Realism in the 20th century,
and simultaneously from the Buddhist iconography or the triviality of the
Chinese daily culture.

In Yin Zhaoyang’s major works, images of characters obviously compose
an important aspect of his creations. He is always questioning, he looks
into the world, exploring people’s chances of survival; very violently
ripping the cloak off of some practical ethics, allowing them to plainly
reveal the true secrets of their respective physiognomy. Through these
various forms of characters, not only can the understanding artist truly
follow the inner heart, and interpret the cause of his incredible creations.
But it is also particularly important to be able to glimpse at the residual
body of these characters, which have suffered the marks of true injury, like
a lingering nightmare. “Facade - Yin Zhaoyang” offers an exclusive review
of the established young artist Yin Zhaoyang for art collectors and lovers.
Essays by the renowned poet and critic Zhu Zhu review the artist’s early
and recent art work; an internview between the curator Zhu Zhu and Yin
Zhaoyang providing intimate clues about the artist’s life.

Zhou Chunya (1955 Chongqing) is best-known for his colorful “green
dog” series of paintings. but he is also considered one of the country’s
most talented painters of nature and rural scenes. His works is almost
expressionist -- sometimes using jagged brush strokes and other times
creating colorful, blurred sweeping landscapes. His canvases are often
filled with figures left alone in the world or nature scenes devoid of
humans. In recent years, he has begun to paint a series of portraits filled
with sexual scenes in nature. He graduated from Sichuan Academy of Fine

The “montage” of images displayed in Zhong Biao’s paintings differs from
traditional Chinese scroll paintings in that the images displayed in the
same time-space are without common temporal or locational markers.
The display of space and the continuity of narrative are stripped away,
the entire painting displays a structure of non-narrative continuity,
emphasising the freedom of illogicity. Whereas Zhong Biao does not
employ common Chinese symbols as is the habit of contemporary
Chinese artists, it is his roaming Chinese point of view free from Chinese
symbols that form his visual experience of the overload of information
that just as rapidly becomes useless, and of our supersonic information
society. Like a kleptomaniac, he gathers together these well-known
symbols that are lost throughout the passage of time, he pushes major
events behind the details of common everyday life, weaving a surrealist
narrative representation, a visual epic of continual surging movement,
which is where the meaning of Zhong Biao’s artwork lies.

SOMOGY
The Soviet Non-conformist art movement refers to a group of artists
working outside of the official vein of 20th century Socialist Realism. Their
work was experimental and provocative in the sense that it was openly
critical of the official institutions of the Soviet culture. Dynamism and
stylist diversity characterize these free spirited artists most of whom had
to hide or go into exile in order to practice their art. Western countries,
like France, the UK and the States became the foster countries for many of
them. A selection of works by four major Non-conformist artists is being
presented at the Aktis Gallery of London : Vladimir Yankilevsky, Oscar
Rabine, Oleg Tselkov and Dimitri Krasnopevtev. This book is the exhibition

JOHN RULE SPRING 2011
Over the course of three years (2006-2009), James Welling
photographed the 1949 house and estate of the acclaimed modernist
architect Philip Johnson in New Canaan, CT. Using digital cameras set
on a tripod and holding a variety of filters in front of the lens, Welling
was able to create coloured veils and distortions that transformed the
image at the moment of exposure. The intense colour created by these
gels, along with unexpected views, produce a radically new way of
looking at Johnson’s iconic house. The big glass box, plonked down in the
Connecticut landscape seemed like a conceptual sculpture, a gigantic
lens in the landscape. The project became a laboratory for ideas about
transparency, reflectivity, and colour. With this work, Welling continues
to explore his longtime interest in colour phenomena and trichromatic
vision, the process by which our eyes and brain work together to perceive
the visible spectrum.

Imagine an area the size of a small city centre, bristling with buildings
set in beautiful gardens; fill the buildings with every type of commodity
and activity, in the largest possible quantities; invite all nations on earth
to take part, sparing no expense. After six months, raze this city to the
ground and leave nothing behind, save a number of landmarks intended to
survive and to go on to serve a new purpose. The World’s Fairs, held since
1851, were occurrences such as these, spectacular gestures which briefly
held the world’s attention before disappearing. In Paul Greenhalgh’s
beautifully illustrated book some forty expositions are dealt with in detail
and many more are described. From America, Britain and France – key
countries in forming the exhibition tradition – to Amsterdam, Antwerp,
Barcelona, Brussels, Dublin, Montreal, Moscow, Osaka, Shanghai, Vienna
and Turin. Paul Greenhalgh is a historian of art, design and architecture
and a curator. He is Director and President of the Corcoran Gallery of Art,
Washington DC and was formerly Head of Research at the V&A, London.

The Mythic Modern offers an significant antidote to the perception of the
American abroad, chronicling a remarkable fifteen years of design-build
expeditions in extraordinary locales all over the globe by an international
team of architecture students focused on exploring, not exploiting, the
local cultures, mythologies, and metaphors and leaving astonishing,
affecting structures in their wake. Led by Travis Price, FAIA, who, since his
early days in the Green movement has been sensitive to both the eco- and
ethnospheres, these excursions find in their designs a balance of the tribal
and the modern, the mythic and the practical, the place and its spirit.
This lavishly illustrated book takes a critical look at the preservation of
authenticity and character in a contemporary design language, along the
way telling wild tales of the adventures of building these installations, with
illuminating anecdotes and quotes, followed by the back-story of their

Peter Reyner Banham, the renowned architectural historian and cultural
critic, taught in the newly founded architecture program at the State
University of New York at Buffalo between 1976 and 1980. During his
tenure at Buffalo, inspired by the daylight factories and the grain silos
of the region, he conducted research that led to his seminal book, A
Concrete Atlantis, illuminating the relationship between American
industrial buildings and European Modern Architecture. The Peter Reyner
Banham Fellowship program at Buffalo was established in 2000 to
celebrate Banham’s legacy at Buffalo, and, most importantly, to project
new work that is inspired by Banham’s foundational body of scholarship
on material and visual culture. Here, the projections of the past five
Banham Fellows are documented: Jonathan Solomon (2005-2006),
Sergio Lopez-Pineiro (2006-2007), Eva Franch-Gilabert (2007-2008),
Michael Kubo (2008-2009), Brian Tabolt (2009-2010). This document is

Eskew + Dumez + Ripple is interested in how buildings fit into society,
how people fit into buildings and how to bring all of this together for
the public good. Every detail is considered with a modernist restraint
and a concern for the neighbor. They have positioned themselves in the
field of architecture as potent form seekers and as socially responsive
practitioners; a combination not easily or often found. Comfortable with
aesthetic, practical, political and functional issues, they have mapped
an architectural path that is as didactic as it is successful. Through
an analysis of works by Architects Eskew+Dumez+Ripple, this book

JOHN RULE SPRING 2011
The new Marina Bay Sands, Singapore, is a $5 billion, high-density, mixeduse integrated resort that brings together a 2560 room hotel, convention
center, shopping and dining, theaters, museum, and a casino across the
water from Singapore’s Central Business District. Designed by Bostonbased, internationally renowned architect Moshe Safdie for the Las Vegas
Sands Corporation, the 929,000 meter (10 million square-foot) urban
district anchors the Singapore waterfront, creates a gateway to Singapore,
and provides a dynamic setting for a vibrant public life. This new urban
place integrates the waterfront promenade, a 74,000 square meter
(800,000 square-foot), multi level arcade, and the iconic Museum of Art
Science on the promontory. Located along the network of Public paths
are also two, a casino, a convention center, and a hydraulically adjustable
public event plaza. Combining indoor and outdoor spaces and providing
a platform for a wide array of activities, this vibrant, 21rst century cardo
maximus, or grand arcade, also connects to the subway and other

Waltzing with Brando is the story of a young Los Angeles architect who
found himself, quite unexpectedly, living on an unpopulated atoll in the
South Pacific with his client, Marlon Brando. Bernard Judge recounts
his life changing experience while discovering the culture of Polynesia
and Tahiti in the early 70’s, before mass tourism, electrification and
the automobile changed everything. The book is filled with amusing
anecdotes about his famous client. It is also a narrative about Tetiaroa,
Brandon’s private atoll, about living in nature without despoiling the
environment. It tells of how Brando and his architect came to an
understanding, an appreciation for the atoll’s archeology, its ecology,
and the interdependence of its marine life, sea birds and nesting turtle
grounds. It is an unusual yarn of adventure, of reaching for a dream, and
a compelling love story richly told and illustrated with beautiful historic
photographs of the period.

Patriarches and Co is an international architectural and urbanism agency
with French headquarters. The agency was created in 1960 and currently
employs 100 people. Projects can be divided into 3 distinct types: work
places (offices, factories, laboratories), places to live (private housing,
social housing) and public facilities (schools and hospitals). From the
beginning, “the spirit of the place” in addition to an instinct for sustainable
development and ecological responsability have deeply inspired each
project. The Agency is now celebrating its 50th anniversary, a chance to
go back over some 100 projects via the present publication.

Modern Architecture is a magazine representing the epoch. During its
short life (1926–1930), Modern Architecture made known to general
public the names of Ivan Leonidov, Moses Ginzburg, the Vesnin brothers
and many other distinguished figures in architecture. Being born in the
dawn of the era of the avant-garde, the magazine was characterized by an
uncompromising attitude to new trends in Russian and world art and
architecture. The issues of the magazine are specimens of the graphic
design of their time. All issues have now become highly valued by
collectors . Eighty years later, the reprinted publication of all issues of the
magazine rediscovers the architectural world of young Soviet Russia, thus
being further evidence for its leading role in the world architecture of 20th
century. The publication is meant for architects, researchers in the field of
architecture and all those interested in the history of Russian architecture.

JOHN RULE SPRING 2011
The book is an album of the photos of 100 major examples of Soviet
architecture as stated in the name of the book. The anthology was
composed and edited by Felix Novikov, a well-known Soviet architect
and publicist living nowadays in Rochester, New York and Vladimir
Belogolovsky, a young Russian architect and critic living in New York
City, who based the anthology on archival photos and publications in
the professional Soviet architectural press. The projects publication is
accompanied by a short description. The unique work opens a whole layer
of Soviet architecture hidden, despite the long-destroyed “Iron Curtain”,
by the absence of due interest. However, the information on the book
pages will make the reader once again ponder the issues of uniqueness
and originality of thought of the Russian architecture of the 20th century.
The book is recommended by world-leading architectural critics.

It is customary to believe that the period of the 1920s to the early 1930s is
the most interesting period in the Soviet architecture of the 20th century.
However, in the second part of the twentieth century, when construction
was in full swing, and the wheels of state learnt to clearly define social
tasks, a whole constellation of architects came forth, who were not
only serving the needs of state and power, but also implementing the
democratic principles of contemporary architecture in a totalitarian state,
no matter how paradoxical it may sound. This book is the first one in the
series of monographs on architects of the second half of the 20th century.
In accordance with the angle of approach the publisher aims at presenting
the most important theoretical concepts that have played a critical role in
development of Russian architecture in contemporary times.

Larin’s colleagues described him as a mysterious, esoteric phenomenon:
the mage cognizant of the architectural truth; the medium sensitive to
the ideas out of this world; the theoretician, whose discoveries may be
comprehended only by a limited circle of the initiates. At the same time
he was by no means a mystagogue possessing of some secret knowledge.
Larin left no academic works. He realized his ideas in the 1970s, in the era,
the architecture of which nowadays evokes no veneration. When studying
Larin’s projects, it is not clear where this absolute and supreme authority
could come from. Larin always worked as if he were outside of Russia.
His projects are more or less typical for the West, but not for the Soviet
or post-Soviet architecture. The underlying principle of his work was:
“Architecture should not be beautiful; it should be relevant.”

Recently the notion of “green” architecture has been associated with
more and more energy-saving economical and environmentally friendly
projects, which enjoy closer attention at the time of the lasting global
economical crisis. Vladimir Belogolovksy’s exhibition presents a detailed
description of 12 of the most spectacular examples of green architecture
in Great Britain, Spain, United Arab Emirates, the USA and Japan by such
leading masters as Renzo Piano, Norman Foster, Thom Mayne, Peter
Eisenman, William Alsop and Kengo Kuma. Projects of all scales and
purposes which demonstrate various aspects of green architecture.

The careers of Dmitry Velichkin and Nikolay Golovanov are surprisingly
similar. Both were born in Moscow in 1959. Both graduated from the
Moscow architectural institute in 1983. Nowadays both are its professors
Their joint creative work began in 1988 when Velichkin and Golovanov
founded “Architectural art workshops” (A&A), based on their experience
of work in state design organizations. In 1990 the firm gained popularity
due to private orders: designs of interiors and country residences. Today
the leading direction of the bureau activity is design and realization of
important urban environment objects (residential buildings, multipurpose
complexes, business centers) in the capital and the provinces.

“Ostozhenka is a team of professionals providing well-coordinated work,
who have been working together for a long time and feel exactly like
that”. These were Andrey Skokan’s opening words of the interview he
gave Tatlin Mono over three years ago. To this day, he still maintains
this viewpoint. Creative thinking of Ostozhenka’s staff keeps them up all
night; the editors of TATLIN , who prepared and published the anniversary
publication «Ostozhenka. XX Years», were also kept awake. This book
presents both history of the bureau and history of Russia in the recent
twenty years. It is a massive volume with customized covers, illustrations
of projects, photographs of buildings, life in the bureau and personal
stories of employees.

The catalogue presents forty works of Architecton , an ambitious
Moscow-based architectural bureau, produced during the period of 2001
to 2009. Among the projects by the bureau are buildings, which even
those not keen on architecture are familiar with, like the Bocharov Creek
and Eurasia residences, a number of country houses and palaces, as well
as interiors of well-known restaurants and boutiques in Moscow. The
book is published in two languages. It was designed by the staff of the
bureau and puts extra emphasis on their approach and their style.

A comprehensive catalogue of the Octovillas project from Hangzhou
in China, as exhibited at the Venice Biennale of 2010. The design team
comprised eight architects and one landscape designer, from six different
countries: Japan, China, korea, Thailand, Singapore and Malaysia.
“Japanese architect Nobuyaki Furuya said “ Asian architecture is like a
hot pot, many things are put into this pot, to be cooked together. During
the meal we pick the cooked items out, whilst again putting in new
ingredients. I feel the same way about Asian culture and architecture..
old elements are constantly replaced by new elements from different
regions.” I do appreciate this description for the reason that it has
precisely captured the outlook of Asian architecture. It is not an Asian
version of an International Style, but rather it is a realization of multiple
values.”- Fang Zhenning

Victor Korchnoi is one of the greatest figures in chess history. For over half
a century his aggressive style has been undiminished and as awe-inspiring
as ever. This revised and enlarged special anniversary edition for his 80th
birthday includes both volumes of My Best Games including his games
with both white and black. Korchnoi’s annotations are honest, detailed
and very instructive. “In all of chess history you cannot find another player
with his long-lived discipline, vigour, and ferocity... He still wants to play
big games with big ideas. He is one of the greatest truth-seekers”.

Anna & the Juniper Dog
Geoff Cox, Rohan Daniel Eason
With a CD of music by Martin
Roman Rebelski
The Anna Trilogy is a print and audio arthouse fiction series
commissioned and curated by blackmaps press. Featuring the
extraordinary writing of Geoff Cox and exquisite pen and ink illustrations
by Rohan Daniel Eason, each book is complemented by piano and string
compositions scored by Martin Roman Rebelski and is presented as a
cloth bound Victorian edition designed by the La Boca studio. The second
volume in a trilogy which began with Anna & the Witch’s Bottle, Anna
& the Juniper Dog presents a macabre yet beguiling dreamscape rich
with hallucinatory themes and hermetic imagery. Recalling the heady
Victoriana of Lewis Carrol and the un-settling nightmares of Guillermo del
Torro in equal measures, it is a highly collectable work that will delight all
fans of Joyce, Dulac and Rackham. As an original work of experimental
fiction, Anna & The Juniper Dog’ slips like a vapour through the revolving
doors of fantasy, horror, fairy tale, myth and magic as Anna is pulled
through an ever stranger slipstream of eerie echos and mercurial drift.
Presented with a sound track cd by Martin Roman Rebelski..
The first book of the trilogy is due to be reprinted in the autumn of 2011:
