from rococo to vintage... and more
When you arrive in Tongeren, you immediately feel and sense that this is not a
town like any other. The last 20 centuries have left a lasting imprint on the ‘Oldest Town in Belgium’. In the historic town centre, you will discover the many remains from days long gone by such as The Basilica of our Lady, the 13th century
beguinage, the vestiges of the Roman presence here – in short the town centre
exudes an ambiance of ancient art and culture! Tongeren today is a lively town
that has something for everyone – you can go shopping in trendy boutiques,
sample some delicious food and drink in one of the many stylish restaurants or
the friendly brasseries.
We are pleased to send you this brochure with detailed information about the
largest international antiques and curiosity market in the Benelux (every Sunday morning, all year round).
Enjoy the read.
… and see you

On the first Sunday of each month, stores are also pen exceptionally from
1 p.m. to 5 p.m. (in combination with the antiques market).

Then empty your attic and take
part in the antiques market in
Tongeren. So many people dream
of this. But the charm of dealing
on the antiques market is more
than a hobby, it’s often a passion.
A few conditions for participating:
The antiques market, like all markets, takes place on land in the town
of Tongeren, this means that police rules governing public markets
apply (from 29 April 2008).
You may only sell antiques or second-hand items. There is a 10% discount on the price of a stand for annual or 6-monthly subscriptions.
Any remaining stands are allocated to individual stand holders.
These stand holders must present themselves to the market managers at 007h00 at the entrance to the cafeteria in the Eburonen Hall
(Clarissenstraat).

3 Visit the hundreds of stands and permanent antiques shops along the
Leopoldwal. This fabulous route along the Roman walls is truly unique
in the Benelux.
4 At the end of the Leopoldwal carry straight on until you come to the start
of the Maastrichterstraat. This takes you to the Veemarkt with its renovated fountain and benches. In addition to the many stands that you can
visit this is also an excellent spot to stop for a drink and something to eat.

5 You can now wander through the town along the Maastrichterstraat
until you reach the Hospitaalplein where you should turn left into the
Schievelstraat. On the left you will find the renovated Julianus Shopping Centre where you will also find the tourist information office.
6 When you reach the crossroads of the Schiervelstraat, Clarissenstraat,
Moerenstraat and Predikherenstraat you should turn left.

But your visit to Tongeren will not be complete until you have paid a

and the Gallo-Roman Museum.
You will find lots of places where you can find something delicious to

leave your car
on the outskirts of the town
‘You are best visiting Tongeren and its antiques
market on foot. There are lots of car parking spaces around the town along the ring road. There
is also a spacious car park in the municipal park
from where you can walk past the Beguinage
and start your visit of the antiques market at the
Moerenpoort.’
4
write down a list
of what you are looking for
spread your shopping
over two Sundays
Your best chance of success is if you know what
you are looking for. This is why we advise you to
write down a list of the top five items you would
like to buy. You may need to look around, but you
can also ask antiques dealers who will be able to
put you in the right direction.
You will find regulars at the antiques market of
course such as the antiques dealers in the picturesque shops around the antiques market, but
there are also a lot of individual dealers. If you
don’t find what you are looking for on one Sunday, you will find a lot of new dealers the next
week with their latest offerings. Real antiques lovers are also regulars to the antiques market.
5
come rain or shine...
We all love sunny weather of course, but the an
antiques market also has lots to offer in rainy weather or in the winter. If we are having a bout of typical Belgian weather, you will find the antiques
dealers in the Eburonen Hall or in the Julianus car
park. Tongeren has something for everyone, no
matter what the weather. A warm pick-me up on
a cold winter’s day tastes just as good as cool pint
of Amburon in the summer!

2000-year guarantee
The antiques market also acts as a magnet drawing people to the antiques shops along the whole
circuit through Tongeren. In addition to the Sunday opening, you can also get professional advice
and pick up real antiques throughout the week.
At the back of this book you will find the complete
list of antique dealers in Tongeren.
Antiques stay … if you buy something old it’s because you like it. This passion for the past is the driving
force that sends thousands of visitors to Tongeren
every Sunday, and you must admit … what better
item to have in your sitting room than a knick-knack
with a story to tell.
8
negotiating margin
Bargaining is as old as Tongeren itself. You find the price
being asked is a bit too high? Then put in an offer that
also shows respect for the antiques dealer. A bit of negotiating is part of the whole experience of buying at the
biggest antiques market in the Benelux.

Are you planning to purchase a large cupboard
or antique building materials? Make sure you
have the right kind of transport. Most antiques
dealers will be happy to help you out with tips
and advices.

from seller to seller
Have you caught the Tongeren antiques market bug? Then empty your cellar or your attic of
your grandmother’s old stuff. On Sundays the stars of the market in Tongeren are the antiques
dealers and you too can experience what this feels like. For a small rental fee you can have your
own stand. It’s a great hobby that can also put a few euros in your purse!
