Location: Business Center at Owings Mills Owings Mills, MD Phone: 443.394.6667 Website: www.crowntrophy.com/ store-78 Crown prides itself on quick turnaround on jobs small to large. The company does on-site laser engraving, rotary engraving, sandblasting, etching and color imprinting. It might sound unusual to call Crown Trophy an award-winning award company, but that’s exactly what it is. Brian Litofsky co-owns the Crown Trophy franchise in Owings Mills, Maryland, and is the company’s chief recognition officer. His firm makes awards, trophies and other recognition products for hundreds of customers. But he is especially proud of an award that Crown Trophy itself received. “Since the day we’ve opened our doors 12 years ago, we’ve hired disabled employees,” Litofsky said. That effort earned Crown Trophy a Small Employer of Year award from the Baltimore County Commission on Disabilities. plaques; and a trophy assembly area in our warehouse.” Crown Trophy does much more than its name implies. “We do interior signs, interior and exterior banners, name badges and more,” Litofsky said. He Crown Trophy has been a St. John Properties tenant for three years. “We really like St. John as a landlord,” Litofsky said. “We like them for their responsiveness if we have any type of issue for maintenance, their overall professionalism and also for their expertise in space planning when we first moved in.” The company, which Litofsky co-owns with Chief Engraving Officer David Chapman, is a franchise of Crown Trophy, a New York-headquartered national firm that has been in business for 33 years and has 150 locations in more than 40 states. Litofsky said his company, which manufactures nearly 100,000 trophies a year, employs 10 people, adding two workers during peak season, April to July. “That’s when you have the combination of academic and athletic award ceremonies, graduations and spring sports,” he said. “We’re like a little factory here,” Litofsky said. “We have a showroom; a clean area for finer production, such as engraving and etching glass and acrylic TENANT DIGEST 15 A ward - w I N N I N G t E N A N T S Convergence Technology Consulting Location: Quarterfield Center Glen Burnie, MD Phone: 877.870.3131 Website: www.convergencetech.us Many companies in the technology sector have become highly specialized, often focusing on a single product or service. But Convergence Technology Consulting leverages its skilled engineers to excel in a broad spectrum of solutions — an approach that has served the company well. Convergence provides information technology (IT) consulting services to companies in Maryland; Washington, D.C.; Virginia; and North Carolina. Convergence’s president and chief operating officer, Larry Letow, said his company stresses responsibility in its practices. “We have the attitude that we’re going to work to get the job done, no matter what,” he explained. “If we tell our client that something is going to function a certain way once we’re done with it, we work to do what we say. We hold our people accountable for good service, but we provide them with the authority they need to make things right for our clients. That comes across in our work.” Letow has been honored for that dedication to service, earning the Howard County Technology Council’s Legends Award in 2009, as well as the Technology Council of Maryland’s Technology Executive of the Year Award. But he emphasized that those awards honored a team effort, rather than his work alone. “I get to work with great people,” he said. Letow also received the 2008 Corridor Person of the Year Award, given by the Baltimore Washington Corridor Chamber to honor the most important and influential leaders in the region — an honor he shares with St. John Properties’ Edward St. John, who won the following year. “Ed’s an unbelievable person, and it’s such an honor to win the same award as Mr. St. John,” Letow said. Letow is grateful for the high-quality service that he said Convergence has received from St. John Properties since 2004. “They’ve been great to us,” he said. “You want to work with companies that are partners with you, not just vendors. I consider St. John Properties our partner.” 16 TENANT DIGEST Award - w I N N I N G t E N A N T S Modern Mechanical Location: Ashburn Technology Park Ashburn, VA Phone: 571.291.3338 Website: www.modernmec.com To be successful as a new business, it’s important to be able to offer customers more than your competitors do. Sometimes, that little extra is as simple as superior customer service. For Modern Mechanical, that attention to service has set it ahead of its competition. Shawn Mitchell created Modern Mechanical in 2010 from his basement and, in the following year, expanded his business to 14 employees. “Shawn is very entrepreneurial, and he wanted to go out and start his own HVAC business and still provide customer service,” said Jackie Paige, business development manager. Modern knew that it was in competition with more than 500 HVAC companies in the region. “Shawn wanted to show that we could give quality customer service and HVAC services,” Paige said. In addition to HVAC, Modern offers plumbing, geothermal systems and more. earned Modern a Partner of the Month award from the Loudoun Hounds. In addition to the Green Business Challenge, the Loudoun County Chamber of Commerce awarded Modern with the 2011 Service Business of the Year award. “There were more than 160 nominees this year, and the Chamber narrowed it down to five. Then there was an open vote to the public on the Chamber website,” Paige explained. “The public voted, and we ended up winning. I think this award shows people that we are who we say we are, we have great customer service, and we put the best foot forward.” Modern strives to run a business that customers want to patronize over and over again. “We set ourselves apart, and we are able to connect and build relationships,” Paige said. “We want our clients to know they can trust us, and then they will tell a friend or neighbor. That has helped us be as good as we are.” Part of Modern Mechanical’s customer care is ensuring employees are knowledgeable about the services that Modern offers. “Shawn takes pride in making sure everyone is educated so they go into the field understanding the task,” Paige said. All Modern technicians are NATE-certified, specializing in air distribution, furnaces, HVAC efficiency and related fields. In addition to its services and technicians, Modern strives to have strong community involvement. Recently, Modern took part in the Loudoun County (Virginia) Chamber of Commerce Green Business Challenge. Paige discussed ways that Modern stays green, including recycling as much as possible and minimizing power by keeping lights off when not in use. The Green Business Challenge consists of five areas for scoring, and Modern was awarded a certification as a green business. Environmental consideration is just one aspect of what makes Modern stand out in its community. “I don’t think other businesses push their community service the way we do,” Paige said. “We do a lot for Wounded Warrior and military-based nonprofits, Shawn is president of the Rotary Club, we do food drives, and we help with charity donations.” This type of community involvement has twice TENANT DIGEST 17 A ward - w I N N I N G t E N A N T S PharmaJet Location: MIE Corporate Center Golden, CO Phone: 303.526.4278 Website: www.pharmajet.com For many people in developing nations, the risk of contracting a fatal disease from needles used for inoculations is nearly equivalent to the risk involved in rejecting the vaccinations. When needles are used multiple times, a lifesaving vaccination may come at the price of another needle-borne disease. PharmaJet’s needle-free vaccines, however, provide a better alternative — delivering medication through the skin without requiring a needle stick. PharmaJet was founded in 2005 by Kathy Callender, a lifelong health care enthusiast who managed her husband’s orthodontics practice for more than 30 years before deciding to form her own company. Past experiences as a medical missions team member piqued her interest in needle-free vaccination delivery methods. “In developing countries, they reuse 40 to 70 percent of needles, so the very diseases we were trying to prevent were perpetuated by dirty needles,” Callender explained. She noted that approximately 20 bloodborne pathogens can be present on the end of a dirty needle. PharmaJet is headquartered in St. John Properties’ MIE Corporate Center and employs approximately 40 people worldwide. The company was recently named a 2011 Colorado Company to Watch and was selected as one of 15 laureates of The Tech Museum’s Tech Awards in 2010. Heather Callender-Potters — PharmaJet’s chairman and Callender’s daughter — was also named as a finalist for the 2011 Ernst & Young Entrepreneur of the Year award. “We’re a mother-daughter team, so that’s wonderful,” Callender expressed. “My daughter is the financial part of the business, and I did the science and technology.” Callender remarked that the most rewarding aspect of her job is giving a child a tear-free vaccination. “We’ve made their vaccination safe and maybe a little bit more comfortable for them,” she said. “Who says, ‘I’m so happy that I get to go get a shot’? We want to make it safer and easier for everybody, including the health care worker. We hope that we can take away some of the anxiety.” 18 TENANT DIGEST Award - w I N N I N G t E N A N T S Skyline Network Engineering Location: International Trade Center Glen Burnie, MD Phone: 410.795.2700 Website: skylinenet.net On a cold, snowy morning, many of us turn to a local TV or radio station to find out what our commute will be like. Even more accurate than television or radio reports can be live online feeds that provide information on local roads and traffic conditions. Skyline Network Engineering specializes in this technology. Established in 2004, Skyline has expanded from network engineering to most anything a client can imagine. “We do the full operation — system management, application development, pretty much anything IT [information technology] under the sun,” said Jason Ross, chief operating officer and vice president. “Our work is mainly government-focused, and, about two TENANT DIGEST years ago, we started doing commercial as well.” Skyline has been specializing in delivering live video, with noted success. “It’s kind of the middleman between the physical camera and the website. It translates all different types of videos,” Ross explained. “We are responsible for all the highway traffic cameras in Maryland. So when you commute home, you can check on your computer or phone to see if your route is clear. “We all use it ourselves to get home. It’s great for one of the most congested areas in the country, and it made a huge difference in the past few years with some blizzards.” As a rising success among IT companies, Skyline was recognized in 2011 by SmartCEO magazine. Skyline President Brian Holsonbake accepted an award for the “Future 50” in 2011 from the magazine. The award acknowledges the region’s fastest-growing companies based on employee and revenue growth during the last three years. Ross explained that growth will continue for Skyline as RFPs continue to be awarded and new clients are undertaken. In only seven years as a business and four as a tenant of St. John Properties, Skyline has expanded substantially. “We’re now talking to the federal government about some projects,” Ross stated, adding that this growth necessitated taking on more space with St. John Properties — as much as 20,000 square feet. “With the expansion of our space at St. John, we’re putting in a big training room, creating more capabilities for customer service and expanding our product line. We’ve been able to expand our physical space and as a company. And that’s during a recession.” 19 A ward - w I N N I N G t E N A N T S Vision Technologies Location: International Trade Center Glen Burnie, MD Phone: 410.424.2183 Website: www.visiontech.biz In an ever-expanding world of technology, information technology (IT) services are more valuable than ever before. And Vision Technologies is a recognized leader in superior IT services, earning the Chesapeake Regional Technology Council’s Tech Company of the Year award in 2010 as well as the council’s Tech Services Company of the Year award in 2011. Vision Technologies maintains a network of approximately 325 employees in 22 states. The company provides a vast range of IT products and services commercial clients and the federal government, including: • Security systems (physical and virtual) • Emergency-response notification systems • Real-time location services • Video teleconferencing • Audiovisual systems Al Saxon, Vision Technologies’ senior vice president of sales and marketing, said the company’s history of leadership in the IT marketplace reflects the dedication of its employees. “We don’t make widgets, so it’s not like we can say we just make a better widget,” he explained. “Our people have an almost-pathological commitment to customer service and excellence at what they do. “Many times, our customers call us just knowing they have a problem — but not what exactly that problem may be. Our stable of highly certified technical personnel is great at understanding those customers’ concerns and needs, from that first call all the way through installation and support afterward.” Vision Technologies has maintained a strong relationship with St. John Properties during its more than 11 years in business, growing from a 2,500-square-foot location to its current 30,000-square-foot main facility in Glen Burnie. “We weren’t one of their biggest customers at first, but we soon found out that every one of their clients gets the same high level of service,” Saxon said. “I can only offer superlatives about St. John,” Saxon concluded “They are so accommodating and supportive of us, and they’re always eager to do whatever we need them to. In 11-plus years, I haven’t found a single downside for working with St. John Properties.” 20 TENANT DIGEST Proud to be working with St. John Properties for over 24 years Specializing in: • Partitions • Acoustical Ceilings • Exterior Wall Systems 227-G Gateway Drive • Bel Air, MD 21014 410-803-0242 • Fax: 410-420-6505 Baltimore Door & Frame Co., Inc.
