THE ASSOCIATION OF INTERNATIONAL EDUCATION COUNSELLORS TURKEY www.ued.org.tr PRESENTATION OBJECTIVES Information on Turkey Results of UED’s Surveys for Students and Member Agents Information on International Educational Consulting Sector in Turkey UED SOCIOECONOMIC INDICATORS of TURKEY Total population: 73.950.000 (3rd largest population in Europe after Russia and Germany) Secular Republic & Parliamentary Democracy Gross Domestic Product: 1,037 Trillion TL* (by the end of 2012-3rd quarter) 10,5 % increase in accordance with the same period of 2011 Per Capita National Income 17.156 USD** *FOR THE FIRST 9 MONTHS **ESTIMATED for the YEAR 2012 EDUCATIONAL SYSTEM OF TURKEY MANDATORY EDUCATION 12 years Mandatory for ages 6-17, Overseen by Ministry of Education: 4 Years Elementary 4 Years Secondary 4 Years High School High School Education: Various types of high schools (State, Private, Science, Vocational, Anatolian, Military, Foreign-origin) Grading System: 0-5 EDUCATIONAL SYSTEM OF TURKEY LANGUAGE EDUCATION There is a great necessity for Language Education; Turkish Students' average scores; 77 TOEFL IBT-512 TOEFL Paper based 5,88 IELTS Private Language Courses are expensive; Tuition for a 4 month English course in Turkey; 500 -2000 USD EDUCATIONAL SYSTEM OF TURKEY HIGHER EDUCATION Administered by the Higher Education Council (YOK)* 104 State, 62 private Universities. 7 Vocational Colleges 6 are located in the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus Grading System Varies (0-10, 0-100, A-F) *NOTE: Please note that YOK's accreditation is essential for Turkish students who complete their university education abroad. Check if your institution is YOK recognized. If not, Turkish male students are bound by longer military service and further education in Turkey would be jeopardized. EDUCATIONAL SYSTEM OF TURKEY HIGHER EDUCATION Critical Shortage of University places Central Examination for University Entrance*; Total number of applications in 2012 : 1,860,515 Total quota for 4 year programmes: 547,194 (29%) (State Universities 86 %, Private Universities: 11 %, Universities in Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus: 3 %) Tuitions for Private universities: 9000- 20,000 USD *NOTE: two steps; Those who gets minimum score in first exam -YGS- has right to attend second exam; LGS. If they wish to study overseas in countries other than the US, Canada, UK, Australia or EU countries, need to get 185 for a 4 year programme and 160 for a 2 year programme. A 1000 on the SAT or successful completion of an IB program can also substitute for the minimum score requirements.
