Report on Load Crash in Northern Grid during from 13.30hrs to 20:00hrs of 19 th
May'2015
Incident Summary:
On 19th May'2015 Northern Grid experienced heavy demand crash due to thunder storm. The NR
demand started decreasing from the afternoon (13:30hrs). The demand of Haryana started decreasing
after 13:30hrs, Rajasthan after 14:00hrs and that of UP after 16:45hrs. The Regional demand touched a
minimum of 27966 MW at around 18.06 Hrs. This demand reduction resulted in high frequency and
widespread high voltages throughout the system. The system frequency touched a high of 50.59 Hz at
18:03 hrs. 12 no. of EHV (400kV & above) lines were opened to control high voltages and 23 no. of EHV
(400kV & above) lines also tripped on fault/over voltage.
Incident Information:
The demand reduction (as per SCADA data) at 18.06 hrs on 19 th May 2015 in comparison to that at 18.06
hrs on 18th May 2015 was of the order of 9450 MW, as given below:

Demand of Rajasthan, Haryana, UP, & Delhi were much lower than the normal demand. (SCADA plots of
demand attached as Annexure-II). Rajasthan, Haryana, UP & Delhi state control areas were continuously
under drawing from the grid. This demand reduction resulted in high frequency and high voltage in the
system. Twelve lines of 400 kV and above were manually opened to control high voltage and twenty
three lines also tripped on fault/over voltage. (List enclosed as Annexure-I).
The Northern Region exported 400MW to other regions (underdrawal of NR was of the order of
4500MW). Thus, other regionsalso helped in absorbing the surplus of NR. The State of Haryana, UP,
Rajasthan underdrawn from the grid to the line of 1500-1700MW while Delhi underdrawn to the line of
500-600MW.
Actions taken:
The weather warnings and messages were issued by NRLDC to make necessary arrangements as well as
to remain alert, since morning hours of 19 th May 2015. Alert SMS/E-mail messages were issued to all
concerned during the period to reduce under-drawl and for backing/shutting down of generation in
order to control high frequency operation besides containing over-voltages. Generation to the tune of
2620 MW was stopped (closed down). 2120 MW backing down was carried out at ISGS stations
(Singrauli, Rihand, Dadri-Th, Dadri-Gas, Auraiya-Gas, Anta-Gas). Backing down of generation was also
carried out at state generators. List of the generating Stations where unit closing were carried is given
below:
