For 20 years, Central Community United Methodist
Church in Shell Knob has
sponsored graduating high
school seniors with a scholarship for their first year of
post-secondary education.
This year, the scholarship
recipients are Noah Hadlow
and Sydney Olbertz, both
graduating from Cassville
High School. Pastor Bill Kenagy awarded a $700 scholarship to each of them at the
Awards Ceremony on May
17 at Cassville High School.
Noah is a resident of Shell
Knob. He plans to attend
State Fair Community College where he will be playing
baseball for their team, and
he will be pursuing a business
degree.
Sydney is a Shell Knob
resident. She will be completing a Certified Nursing
Assistant program through
Crowder College this summer, and then she will attend
Missouri State University
for a degree in biology and
chemistry, followed by a twoyear physician’s assistant program.
The scholarship team
accepted applications from
graduates of Blue Eye and
Cassville High Schools. The
selection committee was

Both recipients attended
the early worship service at
Central Community United
Methodist Church on May

pledged prayer support for
their freshman year in college.
Schools’ agriculture teacher
and FFA adviser for the past
three years, is being recognized as one of the best young
teachers in the state. Brown
was selected to receive the
National Association of Agricultural Educators (NAAE)
Outstanding Young Member
award.
Brown said, “I was very
surprised knowing the caliber
of ag. teachers and how much
work they put in. Being chosen as the top in that category
kind of blew me away.”
Each year, the NAAE
selects one young teacher as
their outstanding member.
Brown was encouraged to
apply for the award due to
the improvements she’s made
to the ag. program at Southwest in both classes and the
FFA. Criteria for the award
include teaching methods,
instruction style, hands-on
experience, marketing their
program and teaching philos-
for two to five years to qualify.
Brown began teaching
four years ago after graduating from the University
of Arkansas–Fayetteville in
2012. She took a position
from Kansas, near where she
grew up in Jasper, before taking a position at Southwest
three years ago.
Brown said, “I came to
Southwest knowing the history the school has had. There
had been success in past years,
and the school wanted to get
back to those successes.”
While Southwest had
a strong ag. program for a
number of years, recently, the
program suffered. She added,
“There was a lot of potential
to rebuild what used to be
here and make a difference in
these kids’ lives.”
Since taking over, the
Southwest ag. program had a
new greenhouse built, allowing the ag. classes and FFA to
host a plant sale and learn the
ins and outs of greenhouse
management.
However, Brown considers her biggest accomplishment to relate to community.
She said, “I’m really proud the
students are getting back to
serving the community and
doing service programs. We
started the Angel Tree program back again, as well as
greenhouse sales and handson activities.” Angel Tree

students to write what they

For the first time in recent
history, a Southwest FFA
member placed at State competition. Hayden Fox took
fourth place in job interview. Brown said, “The kids
are learning, and it’s not just
a powerpoint. We’re getting
kids back to contests and to
State. They’re working really
hard, and it shows.”
She added, “I know we can
get back to the success the
program had before.”
Brown will receive her
award at the Missouri Vocational Agriculture Teachers
Association conference in
Springfield in July. Her application will then be sent of for
a regional and national competition.

crossing roads in Missouri.
Primarily a woodland species, it is found everywhere

but the southeastern corner of the state. It is more
adapted to grasslands and
is most common in western
Missouri. For more information on Missouri turtles,

Purdy names Character Education winners for May
Purdy Elementary Principal
Janet Boys announced the
character education medal
winners for the month of
May. In partnership with elementary counselor Gary
Jurgensen, Purdy’s kindergarten through fourth grade
teachers present a different
character trait each month.
At the end of the month,
each teacher nominates one
student who best exemplifies the trait presented. These
students receive character
medals from Mrs. Boys at a
special assembly.
In May, students focused
on courage. May medal winners are fourth graders Jeremiah Williams and Tegan
Patterson; third graders
Serenity Morris, Ethan Thao
and Dayten Farris; second
graders Alianna Gower,
Lucy Lee and Jason Villa;
first graders Isaias Lopez,
Brianna Garcia and Carlos
Juarez; and kindergartners
Violet Wolf, Lilly Holloway

I was listening to the radio the other day, the station I was tuned into looks for odd news
items. One in particular caught my attention. USC, The University of ‘Southern California,
graduated their oldest graduate on record last week. 96 years old when he received his
original diploma. I would suppose working at a job long enough to qualify for a pension
will be difficult.
In reality it was a big misunderstanding. The gentleman thought he had graduated in
1953. Recently, he wrote the University asking for a copy of his diploma, which he never
received. He was informed he was one class short of graduating. 63 years later he took the
needed class. By the way, his major no longer existed.
63 years of being certain of something and then finding out he fell short. We can
be thankful God is not that way. His commands and guidance are easily understood
and followed; “For this is the love of God, that we keep his commandments: and his
commandments are not grievous.” 1st John 5:3. We can, by following the inspired words
of the New Testament, know we have completed our Christian course. “According as his
divine power hath given unto us all things that pertain unto life and godliness, through the
knowledge of him that hath called us to glory and virtue:” 2nd Peter 1:3.
Don’t “hope” you are complete in God’s sight; “know” by following his words as
revealed in the Holy Scripture. We invite you to join us at The Mill Street Church of Christ
as we follow God’s will in spirit and in truth.

on regular collection days.
The following items will
be accepted at the curb:

sofas; dressers; loveseats;
recliners; desks; televisions;
bundled guttering; beds,
including hide-a-beds. mattresses and box springs;
wood pallets; waste from
small remodeling or wood
projects with materials cut
into four-foot sections and
stacked; sinks; toilets; cabinets; vanities; carpet cut
into four-foot lengths and
bundled; fencing that is cut
into four-foot lengths; and

animals, raw sewage, waste
oil, hazardous materials,
wet paint containers, chemicals, flammable substances,

The City is also offering a service to Cassville
residents who want to dispose of large appliances and
metal. One option will be
to take only metal or large
appliances to a dumpster
located at 503 Mill Street.
This is across the street
from the Barry County
Sheriff ’s Office. This option
is free. The other option
will be to have Cassville residents set large appliances
at their curb side for Repub-
lic Services to collect. There

service. Residents must
pay the fee at the Cassville

to schedule a pick-up for a
large appliance.
The following large
appliances will be accepted

CCSC Recreational
Library works to help Hospice
Last week, Sharon Clute,
the Central Crossing Senior
Center (CCSC) librarian,
and her husband, George,
worked to assist two hospice facilities in Springfield.
They delivered over 150 cassette books on tape for use
in their hospice programs.
CCSC routinely receives
donated durable medical
equipment and sometimes
finds itself with an excess.
This excess, comprising of
wheel chairs, walkers, porta-potties, etc., was loaded
and taken to the hospice
facilities along with the
books on tape. The books
on tape were overages from
the newly-formed lending
library and needed to find
new homes. Together these
contributions will go a long
way to lessen the burden of
those suffering with end-oflife experiences and hopefully brighten their days on
some level.
If you would like to help
in the recreational lending
library or in any other volunteer function at the Central Crossing Senior Center,
please contact the Center’s
administrator Sara Paterson
at (417) 858-6952 to see how
you can be a part of helping
seniors in the local community and sometimes beyond.

The Missouri Department of
Conservation’s (MDC) Free
Fishing Days are June 11 and
12. During Free Fishing Days,
anyone may fish in the ShowMe State without having to
buy a fishing permit, trout
permit or trout park daily tag.
Normal regulations remain in
effect, such as limits on size
and number of fish an angler
may keep. Special permits
may still be required at some
county, city or private fishing
areas. Trespass laws remain in
effect on private property.
Conservation makes Missouri a great place to fish, and
Free Fishing Days encourages
people to sample the state’s
abundant fishing opportunities. Missouri has more than a
million acres of surface water,
and most of it provides great
fishing.
For information on Missouri fishing, go anywhere permits are sold, or go online to
huntfish.mdc.mo.gov/fishing.
