Women’s Institute. The Fairtrade
Foundation is the UK member of Fairtrade Labelling
Organisations International (FLO), www.fairtrade.net, which
unites 21 national initiatives across Europe, Japan, North
America, Mexico and Australia/New Zealand.
The campaign to make Motherwell a Fairtrade Town was
launched in the Civic Centre on 29th March, 2005. The first
meeting of Motherwell Fairtrade Steering Group was held on
20th April, 2005; members have continued to meet regularly in
the Civic Centre. When Fairtrade goods are bought a
premium is paid to the producer to ensure that the producer
earns enough money in return for his or her labour to buy
food, shelter, drink fresh water, and benefit from healthcare
and education by making suitable provision in their own
communities.
The FAIRTRADE Mark guarantees sustainability and
protection for the environment. Fairtrade produce/goods are
recognisable by the Fairtrade mark awarded by the Fairtrade
Foundation, www.fairtrade.org.uk, which was established in
1992 by CAFOD, Christian Aid,
New Consumer, Oxfam,
Traidcraft and the World
Development Movement. These
founding organisations were later
Celebrating the Award of Fairtrade Zone Status, to
Motherwell, Carfin, Cleland, Holytown, Newarthill and
New Stevenston on 16th January, 2007.

The GLO Centre is delighted to be able to support the
Fairtrade Forum as Motherwell takes on the status of
Fairtrade town. The Bookshop is a retailer of Christian books,
media & gift products and we take very seriously our
responsibility to promote good stewardship and a fair deal for
our suppliers. In addition to ranges from Tearcraft & Jubilee

various other smaller Fairtrade and social justice projects from

Scotmid has been involved with the
Fairtrade Foundation since it began
more that ten years ago. Over this
time the business educated and
motivated customers through in-store
leaflets and posters on Fairtrade. As
well as this Scotmid has been active in
building awareness of Fairtrade in the
wider communities in which it operates
with activities such as tastings and
Mangoes in Ecuador
supporting conference and award
events. Subsequently the range of Fairtrade products
Scotmid stocks has become extremely popular amongst its
customers, especially the range of Fairtrade chocolate!
Tea plucker in Sri Lanka
Since it began its support,
Scotmid has seen its stock of
Fairtrade products (including
own brand) grow significantly
with over 120 products now on
sale in-store including fruit,
chocolate, tea and coffee. In
addition to the branded
products, many of the Co-op
own brand goods stocked by
Scotmid such as fruit, coffee,
tea, fruit juice, wine, cakes,
Cocoa growing in
biscuits, chocolate, flowers and
even footballs now carry the
Belize
FAIRTRADE Mark. This is an
independent certification label which guarantees that
standards set by the Fairtrade Labelling Organisations
(FLO) International have been met for production and
trading, and that the producers benefit from the ‘social
premium’ to be used by the producers to invest in
improving the lives of their families and communities.
