SU MADRID CENTER
Fall 2016 Academic Update
Prepare for Online Registration: June 21–28
1) Request Courses
□
□
Review the information in this packet and course descriptions on the SU Abroad web site.
Select courses and plan your desired schedule, consulting the Time Schedule of Classes.
 You need special permission from SU Abroad to take any course other than those found on
the Time Schedule. (Exceptions are made for pre-approved Universidad Autónoma de Madrid
and IE University courses for students accepted to those programs.)
□
Complete and submit the Student Advising Form (STEP 1: Course Preferences) in the
Questionnaires section of your online application following the instructions.
□
Print completed Student Advising Form (SAF) and take to your advisor(s) for signature and to
ensure your course plan will keep you on track for graduation.
 It is helpful to print and provide your advisor with descriptions of all the courses you want to
get approved.
2) Upload Student Advising Form to SU Abroad
□
Upload the SAF signed by your advisor(s) to your online application by April 30.
 Only legible PDF files will be accepted.
 SU Abroad will record any changes made on your uploaded SAF as a result of your meeting
with your advisor(s).
□
Keep your SAF so you can refer to it when you register online June 21–28.
Grades and Academic Resources

Due to Spanish immigration requirements, you may not drop
below 12 credits (not including Signature Seminar credits) at
any point during the semester.

At Syracuse University, all work for registered classes must
be completed on or before the degree certification date. If
you are graduating, you should seek advice from your home
college regarding your degree certification date.

Grades for courses taken at a Spanish university
(IE University or Universidad Autónoma de Madrid) may not
be posted to your SU transcript until the end of February.

Information on enrollment policies, grades, SU library
resources, registration, internships and independent study
can be found on the Preparing To Go website. Visiting
students should also look at this website for information on
transfer credit and requesting an SU transcript.



You should carefully review academic policies applicable to all SU Abroad programs.
Arrangements to do coursework on an independent research basis, if needed to satisfy a degree
requirement, must be made in advance. Due date for proposals is May 15.
You should regularly check your [email protected] email for messages from SU Abroad.
Study Tours and Course Fees
Some courses include required study tours, site visits, or activities that are an integral part of the course.
Please carefully review the Course-Related Fee Sheet, and also share it with your parents/guardians if
they are financially responsible for your fees. If you register for any course with a mandatory study
tour(s), you must participate in this field study. Do not plan personal travel until you get to Madrid and
know when you may be required to take part in a class-related study tour, make-up classes, Signature
Seminar sessions, exam periods, and other academic commitments. Fees to cover the costs of supplies
and mandatory field study are charged automatically to your Bursar account when you register.
Course Information
All the Madrid Center courses expected to be offered this semester are listed on the provisional
Time Schedule of Classes. Syracuse University reserves the right to cancel a course with low enrollment
or to change the course format to an independent study.
Required Courses
All students are required to take the following:

A Signature Seminar (Azahar, Imperium, Spanish Identities, or Marine Ecology of the Mediterranean
Sea and North Africa; 3 credits). You may not drop the Signature Seminar.

At least one course taught in Spanish. Some students must take two courses. You can find out your
specific requirement(s) by identifying your language level and consulting the chart below. Please also
refer to the course descriptions on our website.
* Syracuse students with no Spanish credit on their SU transcript (including native or heritage speakers)
must take the Spanish online placement exam (accessed through MySlice). This will identify your
language level and allow you to register for the appropriate course. Instructions on accessing this
exam are available online.
Visiting students, if you are unsure of your language level, review the course descriptions and consult
with an advisor in the languages department of your home school. You may also request access to
SU’s online placement exam by contacting Jeanne Chu at [email protected].
New Center Course
Please consider the following new course when you plan your schedule:

HUM/REL/JSP/REL 321 – Christians, Jews, and Muslims: Historic Encounters in the
Mediterranean (3 credits)
New Courses at the Universidad Autónoma de Madrid
SU Abroad is pleased to offer two new courses taught in English at the UAM.


BIO 480.1 – Cell Biology (4 credits)
MAT 280.1 – Basic Statistics and Probability (4 credits)
Registration for UAM courses is finalized when you get to Madrid. The expected program end date for
these courses is December 22.
Please note that the commute by train from SU’s Madrid center to the UAM takes about 30 minutes (the
train stop is located on the UAM campus). This means that you cannot take a Madrid Center course that
meets immediately before or after a UAM course.
Also, planning a schedule that includes one or both of these courses with the required Spanish language
course and other center courses may be challenging or not possible. This will depend on your language
level, what center courses you need or want, and the final UAM time schedule. Our Madrid Center will
work with interested students once abroad to plan a schedule that balances these considerations.
Course Cancellations
We will not offer the following courses in the Fall 2016 semester:






ACC 357 – Intermediate Financial Accounting II
ECN 365 – The World Economy
PSC 405 – Politics of the European Union
SOC/WGS 300.1 – Gender, Race, Migration and Family in Spain
SPA 325/HST/LAS 322 – Colonial Latin America
SPA/LAS 433 – Business Spanish

Online Registration: June 21–28
You will receive information in early June about registering online for your Madrid Center courses. During
online registration, you may register for no more than 5 semester courses (15-16 credits), not counting
Signature Seminar credits. Instructions, including your individual registration appointment day/time, will
be available one to two weeks before online registration starts. Any registration restrictions will be
announced in the registration instructions. Be sure to regularly check your [email protected] email.
Special Program: Madrid Center & IE University
Students taking courses at IE University (IEU) will enroll in classes through IEU’s online platform in July,
separately from Syracuse’s online registration process. Students accepted to this program will receive
enrollment instructions via email directly from IEU.
With registration at IEU limited to 1–2 courses, you
will also take two or more course(s) at the Madrid
Center. Complete, have signed, and upload the SAF
seeking approval for Center courses of interest.
 Not all of the IEU courses listed on our website
will be available this fall, and IEU does not
confirm its offerings until just before the start of
classes.
 We cannot guarantee specific course offerings.
Therefore, you should not count on taking—or
fulfilling specific degree requirements with—a
particular IEU course, but should have several
alternative courses in mind and approved by your
home college.
Courses expected to be offered in Fall 2016 include:






FIN280.1– Corporate Finance
FIN480.1 – Finance II
FIN480.2 – Advanced Topics in International Finance
FIN480.3 – Investment Analysis & Portfolio Management
MAR480.1 – Product and Brand Management
MGT280.1 – Strategic Management
The expected Madrid Center & IE University program end date is December 22. Grades for courses taken
at a Spanish university may not be posted to your SU transcript until the end of February. Again, if you
are graduating, seek advice from your home college regarding your degree certification date.

COURSE-RELATED FEES
MADRID FALL 2016
REVIEW AND GIVE TO YOUR PARENT/GUARDIAN
Students who register for any of the courses listed below will be charged a fee to cover special activities,
such as study tours or site visits, which are an integral part of the course. Study tour fees reflect the cost of
transportation, accommodations, and some group meals. This is not a bill.
Fees are billed from Syracuse University following the online registration period. Students receive an email
notice to view their bill in MySlice. These fees are not included in either the tuition or program fee
charges, which are billed prior to departure. Any new course-related fees or fee increases approved after
this date will be announced prior to registration. All students who register for a course with a courserelated fee are required to pay the fee, even if they are only auditing the course.
Financial Deadline to Withdraw from the Program: Please refer to the SU Tuition, Fees, and Related
Policies Bulletin for information on refund of course-related fees for students who withdraw from the
program voluntarily, involuntarily, or due to suspension or expulsion.
http://bursar.syr.edu/bursar/uploads/2015-2016%20Tuition%20fees%20booklet.pdf
Financial Deadline for Course/Credit Changes: Students in the program who make course/credit changes
by the Financial Deadline indicated in MySlice for the dropped class may request a refund of any unspent
or uncommitted portion of the course fees. There is no refund of course fees to students who make
course/credit changes after this deadline.
