Welcome to “The Great Lake of Texas” ,
whether you are just visiting, have a weekend
place, or live here fulltime, we know you have
already discovered how beautiful Possum
Kingdom is. But, the cliffs and beautiful water
are not the most wonderful thing about PK, it’s
the people.You will find that the people around
PK are passionate about this lake, they truly
love PK and want others to enjoy this
wonderful area as much as they do. Our
merchants take as much pride in being good
neighbors as they do in offering great products
and services; so look though this guide, you
may be surprised to discover the diverse range
of products and services that are available to
you here at PK.
Our 300 members of the Chamber of
Commerce strive to make Possum Kingdom
the best possible place for you to bring your
family and have a wonderful and safe time.

in our many activities, we truly have something

Hell’s Gate
For water enthusiasts, there are marinas
offering boat rentals of all types, boat
launches, both public and private, scuba
diving opportunities, water skiing, fishing,
swimming, or just plain relaxing by the water.
Both the east and west sides of PK have
restaurants, gift shops, boat repair shops and
dealers, convenience stores and bait shops. On
the west side, Possum Kingdom State Park is
available.
Cabin rentals and camping is abundant at
PK, with eight public use camping areas on
the water.

The clear waters of Possum Kingdom Lake
provide great opportunity for inland diving
without the expense of traveling to Mexico or
the Islands. Many divers only think about the
exotic locations and overlook the great dive
opportunities at inland lakes. Once lake
oriented, divers can explore the rock
formations around the Hell’s Gate area and
along the cliff line in several places on the
south side of the lake. The underwater
visibility varies from good to excellent
depending on the weather and one can find
several boats with the dive flag displayed
each warm weekend as divers explore this
beautiful lake.
Texas Parks and Wildlife has seen to the
desires of fishermen, stocking the lake
annually with striper, native bass and largemouth Florida bass.
Several boat rental businesses are located
around the lake that offer everything from
personal watercrafts to ski boats to party
boats at reasonable prices. Docks abound, as
do services both on and off the water.
The estimated annual visitors to PK number
over three million and facilities to
accommodate these visitors have grown
dramatically over the last several years. ✯

POSSUM KINGDOM FIRE DEPARTMENTS
& EMERCENCY MEDICAL SERVICES
T
he Possum Kingdom Lake area is
protected by two separate Volunteer Fire
Departments with Emergency Medical
Services. Possum Kingdom Eastside EMS was
formed in 1973 by a handful of volunteers and
one donated used ambulance to cover the vast
area of Possum Kingdom Lake. In 1983, PK
Westside EMS was formed after two used van
ambulances were purchased from Lubbock.
Both service’s have grown over the years and
replaced the used trucks with new, fully
stocked ambulances and highly trained
certified experienced responders with Mobile
Intensive Care abilities. Each Service works
closely with local Air Ambulances, ie., Airevac
or Careflight that may be contacted to
transport a patient to a specialty hospital in the
metroplex if needed.
Both PK Westside and PK Eastside EMS are
all volunteer emergency medical services.
These volunteers/responders spend numerous
hours training and both have EMT classes
several times a year. They are available to
respond to any emergency at any hour, and all
services offered are given to the community
and visitors of Possum Kingdom Lake totally
“free” of charge. Both services depend on
donations to maintain operation. PK Eastside
EMS/VFD has two fund raisers every year with
a Fish Fry in July and an annual “Boot Drive”
on Memorial Day Weekend. Both Fire
Departments are staffed totally by Volunteers
and have several trucks to respond to any
emergency from grass fires to structure fires.
PK Westside VFD also has a new Hovercraft
that is designed to aid in rescues. ✯

emergency. By alerting the 911 Operator and
the ground emergency response team that
you are an Air Evac member, a skilled Air
Evac crew will fly directly to your location if
you have a life or limb threatening medical
emergency. You or your loved ones will be
stabilized and transported.
Air Evac Lifeteam has been providing air
ambulance care to rural communities since
1985. Professionally trained crews of nurses,
medics and pilots operate medically equipped
helicopters that rapidly transport patients to
the nearest appropriate medical facility.
Air Evac Lifeteam medical specialists are
standing by 24 hours a day, 365 days a year to
respond to your medical emergency.

How did
Possum Kingdom

Get Its Name?
One story about why the lake is called Possum
Kingdom began when a peddler named Ike
Sablosky came to Texas in 1906. This salesman had come to Texas from Pennsylvania
and Indiana to regain his health. Mineral
Wells at the time was famous as a health spa
and Ike came to recuperate. While living in
Mineral Wells, Ike saw an opportunity to get
into the hide and fur business as the Palo
Pinto hills were a paradise for raccoon,
possum, and fur bearing critters. Mr.
Sablosky’s best source of supply for possum
hides came from cedar choppers and hunters
up in Northwest Palo Pinto County. Ike called
his best suppliers “the boys from Possum
Kingdom”. The name grew more and more
popular and the area became known as
Possum Kingdom. Mr. Sablosky moved to
Dallas and became a millionaire in the
insurance business. He once owned the Dallas
baseball team of the old Texas League. After
he died at age 82, most of his wealth was
given to charities. ✯

Recreational Permit for all watercraft on Possum Kingdom Lake. The permit
applies to all watercraft requiring state registration.

Permits will be sold at local vendors, Chamber of Commerce and the Brazos
River Authority Lake Office. Daily permits are also available in 24-hour
dispensers at the Public Boat Ramp, West Side Park and South D&D Public
Use Area.
The permit must be on the watercraft at all times and presented to Law
Enforcement Officer upon request. A fine of up to $500 for failure to comply
will be enforced.

Capital Improvement
The BRA has begun work on two capital
improvement projects at Sandy Beach and
Scenic Cove parks. A new, handicapped
accessible restroom and shower facility will
replace the older facility at Sandy Beach. The
American Disability Association-approved
restrooms and showers will be completed by
the end of January, weather permitting. The
park will remain closed until construction is
complete.
An additional capital improvement project is
underway at Scenic Cove Park. More than 20
shelters with fire pits, tables and barbecue
grills are being installed along with two
additional restrooms, upgraded courtesy dock,
and additional road infrastructure. The park is
expected to remain open throughout the
improvement process.

ossum Kingdom
Lake (PK) offers one of
the most beautiful and
dramatic vistas in the
state. Enjoying nature at
its best can be found on
the hiking trails at
Possum Kingdom.
Presently there are three existing and one future trail at PK, each offering
spectacular views of native vegetation and the lake; a one-quarter mile
nature trail at Westside Park, a one-mile hiking trail along the Brazos
River (below the damn) and the five-mile hike and bike trail located off
Park Road 36 at La Villa Road. This trail offers a restroom and public
parking. The trail also provides access to the top of a 90’ high peak that
has an outstanding view of the lake. Phase II, opening Spring 2009, will
add six miles to the exisiting five mile trail. The scenic qualities of the
trails rival any in the state. Outstanding nature viewing includes deer,
turkey, fox and numerous birds. These hike and bike trails are free to the

The Possum Kingdom Trail is a
nature trail through a North Texas
cedar and oak forest. The trail
has a natural surface with a
vertical rise of more than 200 feet
and requires physical stamina to
complete.
Remember to dress
appropriately for the current
weather conditions. This trail can
reach temperatures of more than
100° during the summer. Make
sure you bring plenty of water
with you!
Persons with heart, respiratory
or other medical conditions that
may hinder physical exertion and
women who are pregnant, are
cautioned to consult their
physician before attempting to
travel this trail. Young children
may experience difficulty
traveling the trail due to steep
inclines and uneven surfaces.
Please be advised that due to
the composition of the trail
surface, the trail may be
impassable during and
immediately after heavy rain due
to mud and runoff.
The PK trail winds through the
natural habitat of numerous

Trekkers headed to Possum
Kingdom Lake’s Hike and Bike
Trail will have twice as much trail
to explore this coming spring.
Construction on Phase II of the
trail system began in October and
will add approximately six-miles
to the existing five-mile trail.
Phase II of the four phase trail
system will connect with the
existing trail at Park Road 36 and
stretch to Burma Road. Several
parks will be linked by the system
along with trail heads at Park
Road 36, Frontier Unit, Hamilton
Drive and Burma Roads, as well as
South D&D Public Use Area.
Visitors to the trail will have
access to vehicle parking areas
and trail signage directing them to
overlooks with
interpretive signage
and some of the most
impressive views of
the lake. The addition winds
through wooded areas, limestone
canyons and the trails peak more
than 350 feet above the lake. The
trail system was designed to allow
the habitat to remain untouched
outside of the marked trail, so
visitors will enjoy wilderness as it
is native to the PK area. An
official opening of Phase II is set
for late spring.
Phase III of the trail project has
received approval from the Texas
Parks and Wildlife Department
along with grant funding in the
amount of $121,600. Work is
expected to begin in fall, 2009 on
the $152,000 project. Once
completed, the trail system will
offer 21 miles of breathtaking
views. ✯

Located along the shores of one of the
most famed—or at least one of the most
uniquely named—lakes in all of Texas,
Possum Kingdom State Park showcases
the cedar-covered hilltop vistas and
expansive deep blue water that is the
setting of Possum Kingdom reservoir.
The park itself encompasses some 1,500
acres in the distinctive surroundings of
what is actually a mountain range, the
Palo Pinto Mountains, and the Brazos
River Valley. The state park features
numerous amenities that make a visit to
the lake even more rewarding, as well as
comfortable. PK State Park has more than
100 available campsites, including 10
walk-in primitive tent sites, 61 water and
electric hookup sites, and 55 water camp
sites. There are also seven cabin facilities
which are available for rent, six of which
accommodate four people, and one large
cabin called Longhorn Lodge, that can
hold eight people. The cabins all have air
conditioning and heating, a kitchen with
stove, oven and refrigerator; a bathroom
with shower, and a barbeque grill and
table located just outside.

There’s also plenty to do and see while at
Possum Kingdom SP; two miles of
winding hike and bike trails make for a
great walk with traditionally lots of visible
wildlife, such as favorites like whitetail
deer, wild turkey and raccoons, and of
course, possums. A fishing pier, picnic
tables, restrooms with showers,
playgrounds and a fish-cleaning station
are also located inside PK State Park. A
concrete boat ramp and courtesy dock
grant access to the 17,600-acre lake and its
legendary recreational boating and fishing
opportunities for largemouth bass,
crappie, striped bass, white bass, channel
catfish and others.

St Peter’s Episcopal Church
The church building was originally built in 1907 in Graham on the side
of “Standpipe Mountain”. In 1963, when the parishioners of the Graham Church, Holy Spirit Episcopal, built a new church the original
building was moved to Possum Kingdom Lake and named Saint Peter’s
By The Lake. The church was presented a Texas State Historical Medallion in recognition of being one of the oldest church buildings in
Texas. (The Episcopal Church was first organized in Graham in 1876.)
Today the church has a very active congregation and sponsors community activities such as a Spring Luncheon; the Possum Walk; a
Women’s Retreat; a Fall Picnic; a team in the Possum Fest Chili Cook
Off; a Thanksgiving Service and Dinner; and a Christmas Eve Service.

these events is placed in a building fund to help maintain this historic
building.
