President’s Monthly Report
September 2016
The weather (rain) has been a big factor
against the preparation of our pennant
season. There were many cancellations
of our trial games and practice times.
Regardless we are off to great start for
the season with achievement's on the
greens. Well done.
Unfortunately a number of our Night
Owls have been cancelled as well due to
the weather.
The Board of Management has
submitted a Grant application to the
Office for Recreation and Sport for the
Active Club Program Round 42. This
application is for $5,000 to assist with the
purchase of new coloured bowls for our
schools sports programs and the 'Get
Bowled Over' program being launched on
18th November 2016. Hoping that we will
be successful, but we will not know until
6th January 2017.
Ian Burton and myself attended a
meeting held at Becks Bakery on
6th October in regards to Tourism and
Business in Port Noarlunga. The intent of
the meeting was to develop a Blues
Festival – 'Keeping the Blues Alive'. The
initial meeting was to ascertain if the
businesses and residents in the area
would be interested in pursuing such an
event. Hoping to attract more people to
the south. A sub-committee was organised to move forward with this prject.
President's Day was a great success.
Many thanks to our wonderful
volunteers. As everyone is aware that
these functions need a great deal of
preparation. All areas need to be
attended to. The presentation of the
clubrooms, the purchasing for the bar
and the food for the meal, the setting
of tables, the washing up, the
preparation and serving of meals, the
cleaning up, the purchasing of raffle
prizes, the surrounding grounds, the
greens, the invitations to visiting clubs,
the team draw and cards for the day
etc. Thank you to Bryan Morden,
Trevor Pitman for organising the
smooth running of the day. Thank
you to our Bar personnel Greg Cahill
and Peter Johnson. Thank you to
Lorraine Bird for a great lunch and the
amazing team of volunteers who
helped. Also Ian Bird and his team of
helpers for the grounds. Our Club is so
fortunate with the volunteers who contribute their time and energy for the
benefit of us all. PNBC was complimented by the visiting teams on our
facilities and the friendliness of all our
members.
On behalf of the Members and the
Board of Management I would like to
thank Barbara Nesbitt for her tireless
contribution to the members of PNBC.
Barbara is wearing many 'hats' to assist in the daily activities of PNBC. Rita
Longshaw is on a well deserved holiday, therefore Barbara has also taken
on the Treasurer's role for the moment.
Thank you Barbara.
Bryan Morden was awarded the
President's Citation from Clubs SA. The
presentation was held at the Adelaide
Oval Banquet Room. It was a great evening to participate in Bryan's
celebration and for him to be recognised for
his contribution to Port Noarlunga Bowling Club.

Club Championships
Schools’ Program
Many thanks to Bryan for the time and
effort he put into arranging the draws for
all events, as well as integrating them
into internal and external timelines.
Cardijn College and Seaford Secondary
Colleges have requested an increase in
the number of Year 9/10 classes and
students coming to the club for Phys Ed.
We expect around 60 students in each of
the 5 week sessions, and later Year 11/12
students will come for 3 whole day intensive sessions as part of their SACE
Phys Ed course.
It is essential that ‘finish by dates’ are
adhered to so events can proceed
smoothly.
Bryan has advised the Board he will not
be continuing with coordination of the
Club Championships, but will organize all
remaining Gala Days. Sandra Fameli has
kindly agreed to manage the remaining
work for the championships.
President’s Day
Congratulations to PNBC teams which
took out most prizes, thanks to all
volunteers whose efforts contributed to
the success of the day. There is a lot
which has to go right on such days, and
the feedback from visiting bowlers was
highly positive. It was unfortunate that
poor weather shortened the afternoon but
a quick decision was necessary to protect
the greens. Congratulations to Bryan
whose attention to detail ensured a good
day for the club.
Selection Panels
Jim Gall and Joe Fortanier have withdrawn from the Men’s Wednesday panel.
George Dunn will join the panel
immediately and we will monitor the
situation to see if another person is
required in the future.
Rick and Bryan are working with the
schools to schedule programs and
coaching commitments.
Night Owls
Unfortunately we have had to cancel 3
nights due to poor weather. Hopefully the
season will proceed without more
interruptions for the 70 or so bowlers who
have registered to date.
Pennants
PNBC got off to a solid start with our
ladies winning both matches and on
Saturday the O.G. teams won 4 of the 7
matches. Over the coming weeks it is
expected teams and positions within
teams will become more settled so
players can build the camaraderie which
is such an important ingredient of
successful teams.

First aid course — it is essential that we increase
the number of first aid responders available at the course it
could save the lives of a club member — the club will pay
for the course. Please see Barb Nesbitt for full details.
Veggie Gardener — our long serving volunteer
♦
garden, Frank Wood, has retired and the club needs a
volunteer/s gardener to take over this position. This garden
is some-thing unique to our club and provides both veggies
and income during the summer months. Please see Ian
Bird for further details.
In the August Toucher Newsletter and the September issue of the Toucher it was
reported due to some misinformation that Mavis Ineson had retired from her
volunteer work for the Night Owls. This is totally incorrect Mavis has not retired nor
is about to retire from this roll with the Night Owls.
To you Mavis: Please accept our sincere apologies for any hurt, distress or
embarrassment that this might have caused you. You are a valuable member of the
Port Noarlunga Bowling Club especially the Night Owls and your volunteer work is
greatly appreciated by all.

An country boy and his father
were experiencing their first visit
to the city were visiting a mall.
They were amazed by almost
everything they saw, but especially
two shiny, silver walls in the hotel
lobby that could move apart and
back together again. The boy asked
his father, "What is this father?"
The father (never having seen an
elevator) responded, "Son, I have
never seen anything like this in my
life. I don't know what it is."
While the boy and his father were
watching wide-eyed, an older lady,
limping slightly with a cane, slowly
walks up to the moving walls and
pressed a button.
The walls opened and the lady
walks between them and into a small
room. The walls closed and the boy
and his father watched, small circles
of light with numbers above the wall
light up. They continued to watch
the circles light up in the reverse
direction.
The walls opened up again and a
beautiful 24-year-old woman
stepped out.
The father said to his son, "Go get
your Mother.

his new parish. He walked to the window
of his bedroom to get a deep breath of
the beautiful day outside.
He then noticed there was . . . a donkey
lying dead in the middle of his front
lawn. He promptly called the local police
station.
The conversation went like this: "Good
morning. This is Sergeant Jones. How
might I help you?"
"And the best of the day te yersef
this is Father O'Malley at St. Ann's
Catholic Church. There's a donkey lying
dead in me front lawn, and would you be
so kind as to send a couple o' yer lads
to take care of the matter?"
Sergeant Jones, considering himself to
be quite a wit and recognizing the Irish
accent, thought he would have a little
fun with the good father, replied,
"Well now Father, it was always my
impression that you people took care
of the last rites!"
There was dead silence on the line for a
moment . . ..
Father O'Malley then replied: "Aye,' tis
certainly true; but we are also obliged
to notify the next of kin first, which is
the reason for me call."

MANY ATHLETES WHO PREFORM WELL DURING TRAINING OR PRACTISE CAN SUFFER FROM
PERFORMANCE ANXIETY ON A GAME DAY. SO WHAT CAN CAUSE THIS PRESSURE?
•

THE IMPORTANCE OF THE GAME
THE CONDITIONS UNDER WHICH THEY WILL PLAY,THE WEATHER,
A DITCH RINK, CROWD SIZE
POSSIBILITY OF PLAYING WELL OR PLAYING POORLY
THE QUALITY OF THE OPPOSITION
THEY HAVE EXTREMELY HIGH EXPECTATIONS OF THEIR SUCCESS
IN AWAY GAMES WE LOSE SECURITY OF PLAYING ON OUR “HOME GROUND” AND OFTEN MENTALLY WE ARE WORRYING ABOUT IT BEFORE WE STEP OUT ONTO THE GREEN. OUR MINDS
CAN START TO DOUBT OUR ABILITY WHICH CAN IMPACT ON OUR PERFORMANCE

•
THE GREEN IS FASTER/SLOWER THAN OUR HOME GROUND
THERE IS MORE NOISE FROM THE ROAD
THE LINES ON THE GREEN ARE NOT GOOD
IT IS WINDIER THAN OUR CLUB
THEY HAVE A LOT OF CLUB MEMBERS TO SUPPORT THEM
SUDDENLY ALL THESE THINGS IF WE LET THEM, WILL GET INTO OUR MINDS AND MAKE US
DOUBT WHETHER WE WILL PLAY WELL. STEP BACK AND CONSIDER WHAT IS CONTROLLABLE
AND WHAT UNCONTROLABLE IS.
ONCE THE GAME STARTS IT WILL SUBSIDE.
SELF CONFIDENCE – SELF BELIEF. THIS TENDS TO BE HIGHEST WHEN WE BELIEVE IN OUR
ABILITY AND FEEL THAT WE HAVE PROPERLY PREPARED.
THINK POSITIVE AND BELIEVE IN YOUR ABILITY.
GET ON THE GREEN FOR A GOOD PRE GAME ROLL UP WHEN POSSIBLE.
CONTROL YOUR THOUGHTS. ALWAYS THINK POSITIVE.
TAKE SLOW DEEP BREATHS. WHEN YOU WANT TO ELIMINATE ANXIETY. BREATHING SLOWLY
WILL HELP YOU CONCENTRATE AND KEEP YOUR MIND ON WHAT YOU HAVE TO DO.
PLAY AS THOUGH YOU ARE ENJOYING IT. CHANCES ARE YOU WILL REALIZE THAT YOU ARE
ENJOYING IT DESPITE THE OCCASIONAL LESS PERFECT BOWL.
BELIEVE THAT YOU ARE GOING TO BE SUCCESSFUL.

THE MASQUERADE
Bob and Mary were invited to a swanky
masked Halloween Ball.
Mary had a terrible headache the night
of the party, and told Bob to go
without her. Bob, a devoted husband,
protested, but Mary argued, saying she
was going to take two aspirin and go to
bed.
There was no need for her husband to
miss out on a good time. So, he took his
costume and away he went. After an
hours nap, Mary awoke feeling great! It
was still early...she decided to go the
party. Having kept her costume a secret
from her husband, Mary decided to
have a little fun. She would see how
Bob behaved when she was not with
him.
Mary joined the party and soon spotted
her husband on the dance floor,
dancing with every chick that he could,
and copping a little feel here and a little
kiss there.
Mary sidled up to him. She was no
slouch in the Babe department.
Wearing her most seductive smile, She
easily got his attention. He left his
latest partner high and dry and devoted
his attentions to the new stuff that had
just arrived.
Mary let him go as far as he wished, he
was, after all, her husband.
When he whispered a little proposition
in her ear she agreed.
Off they went to the parking lot, and
the first back seat they could find.
As the clock chimed midnight, Mary
slipped away without revealing her
identity.
She went home, put her costume away
and got into bed. Mary was more than
curious as to how Bob was going to describe his evening.
She grabbed a book and pretended to
be reading when he came home.
Casually, she asked what kind of evening he had had.
"Oh, the same old thing. You know I
never have a good time when you're not
there."
Then she asked, "Did you dance much?"
He replied, I'll tell you, I never danced
a dance. When I got there, I met Pete,
Bill and Charlie.
We went into the den and played poker
all evening.
...But you're not going to believe
what happened to the guy I loaned
my costume to...

South Coast Folk Club Concert – 8pm Thursday 17th
November 2016
Ken Nicol (UK)
Ken Nicol is an exceptional musician. As a guitarist, he is one of the most skilled and
exciting players anywhere today; as a singer he is capable of evoking wide range of
emotions in his audience; and as a songwriter he demonstrates these abilities in his
clever and wellcrafted material. His music covers the spectrum from blues to rock, and
effortlessly takes in folk, jazz, ragtime, ballads and more along the way.
Ken was a member of the legendary Albion Band from 1997 until September 2001 when
he left in order to spend more time on other projects. In December 2002, he successfully
joined forces with Steeleye Span, working with the band for eight years, most recently on
their 2009 40th Anniversary Tour, visiting the USA and Australia. During his time with
Steeleye he recorded four albums with the band: ‘They Called Her Babylon’, ‘Winter’,
‘Bloody Men’ and ‘Cogs, Wheels and Lovers’. Ken left the band in 2010.
“Formidable and painstakingly acquired skills on both acoustic and electric guitars, a
very high class player indeed. Flexible too. He seems comfortable with whatever style is
tossed at him.” Martin Carthy
“I first met Ken when we collaborated on an Ashley Hutchings song on his last album. I
was amazed at Ken’s beautiful ragtime guitar style. He has such a great way of
delivering a story and gently laying down the punch line. Humour, great guitar skill and
the right drop of humility, and a passion for right, proper, good music.” Ralph McTell
“Ken Nicol is a consummate musician. A guitarist of broad scope, a sensitive singer and
an intelligent writer of songs with stirring melodies. A musical paragon.” Maddy Prior
“It’s difficult for me to imagine a more talented all rounder than Ken; both as singer and
guitarist.” Ashley Hutchings
Entry: $20/$15 Bar facilities at club prices (no BYO alcohol) – basket supper – cabaret

Social Committee Report
Lunch will be chicken and salads with
a dessert to follow, all washed down
with a glass of bubbly. There will be
sweepstakes and a hat competition.
So get your name on the list – come
and see the race on the big screen bring your family and friends but
hurry as the tables are filling fast.
By the time you read this we would
have had our Fashion show at the club
and I would like to thank all the
people who support these events and
help to bring the extended community
to the clubrooms. Although the social
committee organise these activities
we couldn’t do it without help from
other members including the bar staff
who are always happy to be there.
As soon as Melbourne Cup is over a
box will be placed in the clubrooms
asking for donations for our Xmas
Raffle. This is a major fundraiser for
the club so we would be grateful if
each person could donate one item
suitable for three large Xmas hampers.
The notices for the Xmas dinner/
dance on Saturday 17th December
will go up early November. We are
restricting this initially to club
members and their partners as some
people missed out last year. All names
will need to be placed on the list.
This year we are aiming to have the
best Melbourne Cup Day ever!
Lorraine, Jenny Smith and myself got
together to start the ball rolling, and
now with Fran and the social
committee on board it is all hands on
deck.

Food for Thought
A man brings his best buddy home
for dinner unannounced at 5:30 after
work.
His wife begins screaming at him and
his friend just sits and listens in.
"My hair & makeup are not done, the
house is a mess, the dishes are not
done, I'm still in my pyjamas and I
can't be bothered with cooking tonight!
What the hell did you bring him home
for?"
Husband answers "Because he's
thinking of getting married"
1. If you think you are beaten you
are
2. If you think you dare not, you
don’t
3. If you like to win, but think you
can’t it’s almost a cinch you won’t.
4. If you think you’ll lose, you've lost,
for out in the world we find
success begins with a fellows will,
it’s all in the mind.
5. If you think you are outclassed
you are. You’ve got to think high
to rise. You’ve just got to be sure
of yourself before you can win the
prize.
A couple was having dinner at a
fancy restaurant. As the food was
served,
the husband said, "the food looks
delicious, let's eat."
Wife : honey ... you say a prayer
before eating at home.
Husband : that's at home sweetheart ... here the chef knows how to
cook .
6. Life’s battles don’t always go to
the stronger or faster man, but
sooner or later the man who wins
is the one who thinks he can.

The Panda
A panda walks into a restaurant
orders a sandwich, sits down and
eats the sandwich then pulls out a
gun and shoots the waiter dead. As
the panda stands up to leave, the
manager shouts: "Hey! Where are
you going? You just shot my waiter,
and you didn't pay for your sandwich!" The panda yells back at the
manager,
"Hey, I'm a PANDA! Look it up!"
So the manager opens his
dictionary and looks up the word
"panda." It reads
"PANDA: A tree-dwelling marsupial
of Asian origin, characterized by
distinct black and white colouring.
Eats shoots and leaves."
