Almost all developed countries – among them Singapore – are
faced with the challenge of an ageing population and consequently rising healthcare costs. It is therefore of utmost
importance to react by increasing the efficiency of healthcare
systems without sacrificing quality and lowering standards.
Austria, boasts one of the most developed healthcare systems
in the world, spending 11% of her GDP on healthcare – one of
the highest expenditure per capita among developed nations.
In 2010 healthcare expenditure in Austria amounted to Euro 31.4 billion out of which
almost Euro 1.7 billion were spent on investments and research.
For a population of 8.4 million, Austria maintains 64,000 hospital beds in 268 public and
private hospitals. The density of 4.8 practicing physicians per 1,000 population, well
above the OECD average, is an indication of the high professional standard provided.
It is therefore not surprising, that the Austrian medical equipment industry as well as
the biotech and the pharmaceutical industry are closely linked and associated with the
medical community in terms of research and development.
The Austrian Federal Economic Chamber and the Austrian Embassy – Commercial
Section in Singapore are proud to present a selection of well known companies at their
group exhibition at Medical Fair Asia 2012. Exhibits cover a wide spectrum of products
ranging from custom built ambulances to microprocessor-controlled infusion equipment and ECG electrodes. Turnkey hospital projects offered by a leading planning and
construction company in healthcare and communication systems for hospitals will also
be presented at the Austrian pavilion.

The health care sector strongly depends on the latest technological advances in order
to react on challenges like ageing populations and the need to efficiently manage health
costs. When it comes to medical discoveries and inventions Austria has an excellent and
internationally recognized track record. This is demonstrated by no fewer than six Nobel
Prizes in Physiology and Medicine that were awarded to Austrian scientists.
