M ATTHEW L AZAR is the leading force of the Jewish choral
movement in North America. His superior talents as a conductor
and interpreter of Jewish music have elevated the standards of
Jewish musical performance and educated audiences across North
America. His visionary leadership led to the creation of the
Zamir Choral Foundation, which continues to nurture the growth
of Jewish choral singing in North America and Israel. In addition
to directing the Zamir Chorale, he has also created the Mantua
Singers, the Selah Vocal Ensemble, and Shirah: The Community
Chorus of the Kaplen JCC on the Palisades. He has inspired the
creation of adult choral ensembles throughout the United States and through the Zamir
Choral Foundation’s Jeanne R. Mandell Fund for New Music, has contributed to the
expansion of the choral repertoire through commissions of new music by the finest
composers in North America and Israel.
Matthew Lazar’s establishment of the North American Jewish Choral Festival has provided
a forum for hundreds of Jewish choral singers to come together for an annual, week long,
immersion in Jewish choral music. The Choral Festival has created a harmonious
community that bridges all denominational, generational and political divides and promotes
the highest standards of Jewish choral performance and education.
In 1993, Mr. Lazar turned his attention to the next generation with his creation of HaZamir.
What began in Manhattan as a single choir to provide quality choral singing opportunities
for Jewish high school students has grown into an ever-expanding international movement.
The success of HaZamir: The International Jewish High School Choir has assured the
continuity of Lazar’s commitment to superior Jewish choral singing and Jewish identity.
In addition to his activities in the realm of Jewish choral music, Maestro Lazar has also
appeared as guest conductor of the American Symphony Orchestra, the El Paso Symphony
Orchestra, the Milwaukee Chamber Symphony, the Ra’anana Symphony, and at the Ravinia
Music Festival. Mr. Lazar regularly appears with the great cantors of this generation, and
presents programs at Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center and other major concert halls in the
United States and Israel.
Mr. Lazar has served on the faculties of Columbia University and the Jewish Theological
Seminary and is a frequent lecturer and scholar-in-residence in communities and universities
across the United States. He was recently honored for his accomplishments by the Cantors
Assembly and by Queens College of the City of New York. In addition to his albums with
the Zamir Chorale, his recordings include Chants Mystique I and II with Alberto Mizrahi,
Birthday of the World I and II and A Taste of Eternity I and II with the Western Wind Vocal
Ensemble, and Songs for Jerusalem, featuring a special narration by Nobel Laureate, Elie
Wiesel, with whom Mr. Lazar recently performed in a special concert entitled “Memories
and Melodies of my Childhood.”

Elie Wiesel, Honorary Chairman
The Zamir Choral Foundation, created by Matthew Lazar, promotes
Jewish choral music as a vehicle to inspire Jewish life, culture and
continuity. Building on the success of the Zamir Chorale, the first
modern Hebrew-singing choir in North America, Mr. Lazar sought an
expansive vision that went beyond the activities of any single choir one that fostered Jewish identity across generational and
denominational lines.
Today, through extensive programming,
education, sponsorships and special events, the Zamir Choral
Foundation is at the core of an ever-growing network of Jewish choirs,
singers and music which has helped create the only Foundation of its
kind devoted to Jewish choral music. The Zamir Choral Foundation
has created an international movement of Jewish music, musicians and
culture for today and the future.
The Zamir Choral Foundation's mission is fulfilled by
x Fostering Jewish commitment through Jewish choral singing
x Community building through the trans-denominational, transpolitical and trans-generational events that it sponsors
x Fostering Jewish literacy through the study of the Jewish/Hebrew
texts that are sung
x Unifying and training the conductors, singers and leaders of the
Jewish choral movement
x Strengthening Jewish identity through an international network of
choral ensembles for teens
x Facilitating leadership skills in the next generation
x Commissioning and premiering new Jewish choral works
x Creating dynamic, cutting-edge music programming
x Organizing Israel tours and missions for more than four decades
x Appearing in prime concert venues throughout the US and Israel
The Programs of the

The North American Jewish Choral Festival, founded by Matthew Lazar in 1990, is the
premiere Jewish choral event in the world. Now in its 25th year, the Festival brings together
individual singers and choirs from across North America, with a renowned staff of conductors
and clinicians to sing, learn and share the joy of Jewish music. The Festival attracts professional
musicians, amateur singers, cantors, conductors and lovers of Jewish music in an unforgettable
experience.
HaZamir: The International Jewish High School Choir, founded in 1993 by Matthew
Lazar, provides hundreds of Jewish high school-age students with the unique opportunity to sing
Jewish choral music, build community and connect to Jewish culture. HaZamir’s high-quality,
structured program instills in its youth a lifelong commitment to Jewish life, culture and music
and builds a strong foundation for its participants’ future Jewish involvement. HaZamir
transcends boundaries, giving teenagers a valuable and rare trans-denominational experience as
an opportunity to forge close bonds and unite with a common goal. In addition to local
performances, HaZamir sponsors regional retreats where chapters meet, rehearse together, and
develop friendships. The Annual HaZamir Festival brings together participants from HaZamir
chapters all across the United States and Israel for a three-day event culminating in a gala
concert at a prestigious concert venue in New York City. These major performances combine
music, Judaism, community and spirituality in a powerful blend that is nothing short of life
changing.
The HaZamir Chamber Choir is an auditioned group of singers chosen from among the
HaZamir chapters across the United States and Israel. The Chamber Choir is also open to
singers in cities which do not yet have HaZamir chapters. This honors choir performs as an
independent ensemble at the annual gala, and has appeared at the United Nations,
The Museum of Jewish Heritage, the American Conference of Cantors, and other select
events.
The Ruth K. Westheimer Scholarship Fund was created to help teens who have a musical
gift, but do not have the financial means, to participate in national HaZamir events.
The Zamir Chorale is the leading voice of the Jewish choral movement and sets
the standard for choirs in North America. Founded in 1960 by Stanley Sperber as the
first Zionist Hebrew-singing choir in North America and conducted by Matthew
Lazar since 1972, the Zamir Chorale has thrilled tens of thousands of audience
members across the United States and Israel. Zamir has commissioned and
premiered works by contemporary composers and has collaborated with Leonard
Bernstein, Zubin Mehta, Daniel Barenboim, Carlo Maria Giulini and many others in
choral/orchestral performances. The Zamir Chorale appears regularly in Carnegie Hall
and Lincoln Center.
Zamir Noded is the newest initiative of the Zamir Choral Foundation, created to
provide a high level musical opportunity for young adults aged 18-30 to sing in a
Jewish choir with like-minded peers. Zamir Noded has drawn singers from the New
York tri-State area and beyond, including alumni of HaZamir: The International Jewish
High School Choir and others who are attracted to this unique ensemble. Established in
September, 2013, the choir presented its debut performance at the Foundation’s
Hanukkah concert in Merkin Concert Hall on December 3, 2013.
The Jeanne R. Mandell Fund for New Music, established by Phyllis and Richard
Rosen, commissions new works to be premiered by HaZamir and other ensembles of
the Zamir Choral Foundation. This Fund expands the body of Jewish choral repertoire
with works by internationally-renowned composers from North America and Israel.
Zamir Choral Foundation Tours and Missions to Israel: Zamir, a committed
Zionist organization, has been sponsoring Israel programs since 1967, bringing singers
from all over North America to Israel for performances and cultural exchanges. The
Zamir Choral Foundation’s summer missions to Israel have included outreach and
comfort to victims of terror and support for our brothers and sisters who live there.
During the three years of Israel’s Intifada, the Zamir Choral Foundation brought five
missions to Israel. Zamir also celebrated the 60th anniversary of the State with a
concert tour and mission.
Special Programs, Conferences and the National Jewish Chorale: The Zamir
Choral Foundation’s dynamic programs open new doors for Jewish culture. In 2002,
the first international conference on the 17th century hero of Jewish choral music,
Salamone Rossi, sponsored by the Zamir Choral Foundation, was featured in The New
York Times. Zamir sponsors regional choral festivals. Zamir pioneered Jewish cultural
programming on December 24th and sponsors an annual Open Sing on December 25th
in New York City. The Foundation also convenes the National Jewish Chorale, a
gathering of singers from the finest Jewish choruses in America, to celebrate significant
events in the life of the Jewish people.
