The performance included Bach’s Cantata 78, “Jesu der du meine Seele” and five spirituals from Tippett’s “A Child of our Time” with African-American soloists Eleanor McClellan, Soprano; Mary Henderson Stucky, Alto; John Wesley Wright, Tenor; and William Henry Caldwell, Baritone. We performed our first commissioned work, a piece for chorus, percussion and brass by noted Dayton area composer and organist, Dr. Donald Busarow, featuring Dayton’s own Carillon Brass. The piece was commissioned by First Evangelical Lutheran Church in Pittsburgh for the 150th annivesary of its founding. Rounding out the program was, of course, a Bach Motet. Richard Proulx 18 March 2006 Celebrating Bach and Mozart In 1735/6, while he was in Leipzig, Bach wrote four short Masses which have come to be known as the “Lutheran Masses,” so-called because they had only a Kyrie and a Gloria, the only two Latin liturgical movements used in the Lutheran liturgy. This program began with Mozart’s Dominican Solemn Vespers — lively, exuberant music with some stunning soprano arias. The project combined the Bach Society chorus with four Dayton area school chamber choirs in a presentation of selections from Brahms’ lovely (and lively!) Liebeslieder Waltzes. Each chorus performed individual selections from the Op 52 collection, and joined forces for a finale. The so-called “London” version of the Requiem was less familiar - the arrangement for two pianos instead of orchestra was made in Brahms own hand specifically for venues where orchestra was not available. This concert focused on the Annunciation and the Visitation of Mary mother of Jesus, through the combination of music and art in a multimedia production. The “Magnificats” of both J.S. Bach and John Rutter were the musical showpieces, complemented by images from the Marian Library’s extensive art collection projected on large screens in the sanctuary of the Kettering Adventist Church. This included the magnificent Plaudite by Giovanni Gabrieli, who was all the rage in Venice at the turn of the 16th century, as well as works by current choral “rock star” Eric Whitacre, creator of the worldwide virtual choir. The centerpiece of the concert was a work based on ancient psalm texts by 20th century American composer Norman Dello Joio, who won the Pulitzer Prize for music. Bach’s moving portrayal of Christ’s last days is told through the words of the Gospel of St. Matthew and heart-wrenchingly beautiful music. Considered one of the greatest works in western classical music, Bach’s St. Matthew Passion was composed for double chorus, children’s choir, soloists, and double orchestra for a surround-sound musical experience. The work is believed to have been first performed on Good Friday 1727 at the St. Thomas Church in Leipzig, Germany, where Bach was music director. The concert continued with Bach’s Brandenburg Concerto No. 4 in G Major and highlighted our superb instrumentalists, including violinist Aurelian Oprea. We also welcomed The University of Dayton Chorale to our stage, first to sing excerpts from Bach’s Magnificat in D Major and then to join The Bach Society Chorus in Bach’s Cantata 150. The Clarinet Concerto, performed by Dayton’s own John Kurokawa, is considered to be history’s first great clarinet concerto. Each piece in this concert has a strong connection to England, with some of it composed in the decades just before or following the death of King Edward VII in 1910. But we also reach back to G.F. Handel and T.A. Arne—writing nearly two centuries before—for music widely used in ceremonies to honor and remember monarchs and to hail Britannia’s majesty.
