Ground at the Garma Festival on July 30.
Mr Johnson is widely regarded as the

with the Arnhem Land community and
stakeholders for the past decade.

High Ground’s story is set in Western
Arnhem Land in the 1920s and is inspired
by true events.
“High Ground is impeccably researched,
and even though it is a fiction, it is inspired
by true events and real characters,” Mr
Johnson said.
“This movie is an action-thriller about
the forgotten war in early Australia and the
true recognition of Australia’s first people.
It is about identity and the finding of one’s
roots, a real story of redemption.
“We are very much going for a commercial
film to attract a large audience, as well
as powerful entertainment with strong
messages.”
Filming will commence in August/
September 2017 and casting for roles will
take place across Arnhem Land.
High Ground, which has been described as
the Australian ‘Braveheart’ by Mr Johnson,
will be released in mid-2018.
Mr Giles said the Garma Festival is
Australia’s most significant Indigenous
events and provided the perfect backdrop
for the announcement.

ROAD WORKS IN
MANINGRIDA TO
WRAP UP SOON
Six roads in the Maningrida community
have been receiving a major upgrade as
part of the Federal Government’s Roads to
Recovery Funding, commencing on May 16,
2016.
The total contracted price for the upgrades
is $2,057,709.68 including GST, with the
design and construction work tendered
and awarded to Arnhem Frontier Civil and
Construction.
The roads involved in the project include
Police Station Road between the swimming
pool and Police Station intersection, the
Road between Police Station Road and
Airport Road, Road 2, Road 3 and Road
4 internal roads and the BAC Store Road
between Powerhouse Road and Airport
Road.

Works undertaken have included road
widening, kerb and channel, causeway
construction, drainage, bitumen seal, line
marking and road signage.
The community storm water system is
also set to be improved with further works
required over the coming years.
Sealing works commenced on July 26,
this will be followed by line marking and
signage with the expected completion date
towards the end of August.
At the completion of the project the
community members and visitors to
Maningrida will have safer and a better
standard of roads which were made possible
through the Roads to Recovery Funding.
Council would like to thank the community
for their patience and understanding during
the construction as it can be very disruptive
with road closures and detours. However
Maningrida will have a better road network
for the future.

NOMINATIONS OPEN FOR
GURRUNG SPORTS CARNIVAL
Nominations are now open for the top
end’s largest regional sports carnival,
known as the Gurrung Sports Carnival,
which will be held in Jabiru on September
2 and 3.
The Gurrung Sports Carnival will once
again run in conjunction with the Mahbilil
Festival which is an annual celebration
of Kakadu culture, featuring indigenous
bands and local art displays.
Hosted by West Arnhem Regional
Council, Gurrung Sports Carnival
will once again feature the men’s AFL
competition as well as men’s and women’s
basketball games with hundreds of
participants across the sports.

Ramadani said teams from across the
top end including Gunbalanya, Jabiru,
Daly Waters, Warruwi, Maningrida, Pine
Creek, Minjilang and Darwin are expected
to enter this year’s competition.
“This year’s event will once again have
some high-level talent and we are excited
to see nominations roll in as the event
approaches,” Seide said.
“AFL and men’s and women’s basketball
teams from around the region are
encouraged to get their nomination forms
in by August 19.”

winning but rather participating and
having a great weekend at both the sports

with hand-picked acts from Darwin and

“Expect anything from folk through to
roots and blues and even some rocking
reggae and hip hop,” Scott said.
MAJOR FACELIFT FOR MANINGRIDA POOL
Maningrida Community
Pool remains closed to the
public as major upgrades
to the facility continue.
The $231,589.84 upgrade
to the pool includes
the rectification of the
concrete
apron,
with
design and construction
tendered and awarded to
Duratec Australia.
The extensive works
began on July 13 and
will include demolishing
the
existing
concrete
apron around the pool,
reinforcement, preparing
new form work and
pouring new concrete.
During the removal of the
concrete apron a number
of existing issues have
been identified and are
being rectified before the
project is complete. This
issue may hold the project
up for approximately 2
weeks however this will

REGIONAL PLAN ADOPTED

Officer Brian Hylands
believes
there
is
a
promising year ahead,
following
Council’s
adoption of the 2016-17
Regional Plan and Budget
recently.
Council adopted the
2016-17 Regional Plan and
Budget at an Ordinary
Council Meeting held
on Wednesday, July 13,
following a consultation
period for public comment
from 15 June to 5 July 2016.
The Regional Plan outlines
the objectives for the 201617 financial year, which
are to primarily to deliver
services and programs,
including core, commercial
and community services
across Jabiru, Gunbalanya,
Minjilang, Maningrida and
Warruwi.
Mr Hylands said that,
while Council will always
face challenges, the 2016-17
financial year holds plenty
of promise.
“The
Regional
Plan
contains a commitment
to continue with existing
services and to maintain
current service levels.
“Council aims to achieve
a balance of financial,
environmental, social and
infrastructure goals that
reflect the needs of the
wider community.”
Meanwhile, the 2016-17
Budget intends to provide
a better level of services
being delivered in the
communities.

GUNBALANYA JOINS IN FIRE EXTINGUISER TRAINING
More than 20 residents and
staff members of West Arnhem
Regional Council attended
a fire extinguisher training
session held in Gunbalanya on
Wednesday, July 20.
There were two separate
training
sessions
held
throughout the day which were
run by Captain Auxiliary Fire
Fighter Morris and Auxiliary
Fire Fighter Thompson.
The training incorporated a
theory component with videos
as well as practical experience
in the use of fire blankets on
cooking fires and putting
out fires on a large gas tray
simulator fire.
The training session was
greatly received with plenty
of positive feedback with
staff adding that they now
feel more confident using fire
extinguishers and fire blankets.
Gunbalanya
have
also
expressed
an
interest
in
forming a Northern Territory
Emergency Service unit, with
a RCR demonstration day
on Wednesday, August 17 at
4.30pm at the Gunbalanya
dump for those interested.
NT Fire and Rescue also
wishes to present more training
in Gunbalanya in the future and

LOCAL anglers gear up
for million dollar fish
The Million Dollar Fish tagging team will
visit the Arnhem Land Barramundi Lodge
in early August, as part of the second
season of Million Dollar Fish competition
commencing on October 1.
Registrations are now open for the
second season of the Million Dollar Fish
competition, with even more prize hooks
to lure anglers and promote tourism in
the Top End.
101 barramundi will be tagged and
released at fishing locations across the
Northern Territory, with one fish carrying
a $1 million prize tag and the other 100
fish will be worth $10,000 each if caught.
An extra $160,000 of bonus prizes will
also be awarded.
The second season of the competition
will run until 28 February 2017.

TEAM HEALTH SERVICE OFFICIAL OPENING
The
official
opening
of
Gunbalanya Family and Youth
Services (GFaYS) was held recently
with Top End Association for
Mental (TEAM) Health staff, local
community members, service
providers, and funding body
representatives from Department
of Social Services in attendance for
the celebration.
The event included local bush
tucker, contemporary/traditional
dance and a barbecue and TEAM
Health Youth Support Worker
Rodriguez (aka Pin Pin) Wilson
organised a contemporary style of
traditional dance with some of our
clients and other members of the
community.

Coordinator Andrew Wainwright
said, “the dance stole the show
and even continued with plenty of
people joining in well after most of
the guests had left”.
This was followed by some
barramundi, caught by Lizzie
Wauchope, and nail fish being
cooked on the coals with the added
delight of a file snake also being
cooked by local daluk (ladies).
Andrew also said TEAM Health
now has a much stronger presence
in the Gunbalanya community
with the new demountable
complex located in Middle Camp.
“It is an essential piece of
infrastructure that allows the
GFaYS program to find, keep and
grow our client base,” he said.
“It provides a safe and
comfortable place for youth and
families to come and talk with our
staff and have something to eat or
drink, and join in activities such as
arts and crafts, movies and games.
“It is centrally located in the
community and we have several
people coming to visit on a daily
basis - it also allows us to hold
meetings with other service
providers.”
Andrew also wished to thank
everyone for the success of the
opening.
“We must give a big thank
you to all of our Darwin staff
who attended for helping out
throughout the day and a special

In the previous episode, Flemming successfully
brings down a buffalo and Allan’s return is
delayed due to the weather..
Sunday, 8th February
In the past I often wondered what tropical rain
really was. I certainly figured it out lately. It has
rained heavily all day.
No-one could under any circumstances land
any airplane today. Time these days can feel
long but I try the best as I can to kill the time.
This afternoon I made pancakes and have
taken into consideration that it is the first time
I’ve done it, they tasted pretty good.
Unfortunately we now have no more eggs!
After listening to the radio to hear whether
there were any messages from Darwin I went to
have the daily bath at the edge of the billabong
and on my way I met Laura, one of the old
aboriginals.

that their dogs had brought down. I thanked her
very much.
It was touching that they thought of me. They
did not know that I had the whole refrigerator
filled with meat but now I also have pork for a

Monday, 9th February
The morning was spent cutting up and freezing
the pork from yesterday.
The meat had been hanging to cool all night.
Towards the afternoon I wanted to concrete the
last toilet floor and that was what I did.
It was just finished as it began to rain and I do
hope that the rain does not weaken the surface.
Fortunately has been no trouble with the water
pump at the time and it starts in both the dry
weather and when the rain is falling.
Old Jack came down to get something for his
eyes but I could not help him because I do not
know what Pat used to give him.
However ‘there is nothing the matter with his
eyes,’ Pat says but she
gave him something
against flies anyway
and since then he has
come regular whether
he is suffering from flies
or not.

the Minjilang community.

also awarded a Certificate of
Appreciation from Community
Safety Senior Officer Joanne
Cooper.
For more than eight years, Charlie
has been a well-respected member
of the community, a mentor to the

proactive in ensuring children

A team of veterinarians
and veterinarian students
have
visited
Warruwi,
Gunbalanya and Minjilang
to provide the beneficial dog
health program called West
Arnhem Land Dog Health
Program
(WALDHeP)
recently.
This is the twelfth visit that
the team of veterinarians
and students from the
Faculty of Veterinary and
Agricultural Sciences at the
University of Melbourne
have visited Gunbalanya
and associated outstations,
and the second visit to
Minjilang and Warruwi.
Led by Associate Dean at
the University of Melbourne
Faculty of Veterinary and
Agricultural
Sciences,
Associate Professor Liz
Tudor,
the
WALDHeP
program involves surgical
desexing of dogs and cats,
as well as treatment for
internal and skin parasites.
Throughout two weeks, the
team visited Gunbalanya,
Minjilang,
Warruwi,
Manmoyi, Gumeringbang
and Mamadewerre and
performed
more
than
150 surgical procedures
and treated hundreds of
animals with worming
medication.
Dr Tudor said nearly half
of the procedures were dog
speys.
“We are very grateful for
the welcome and support
given to us in communities,
and for the opportunity
to work with dog owners
over time, and to help them
maintain the health and
well being of their dogs,”
Dr Tudor said.
Fellow Veterinarian Cam
Raw said 43 of the desexing
procedures were performed
on Warruwi community’s
animals.
“These
animals
also
received tick and worming
medications following their
surgery, and an estimated
70 other dogs were treated
with worming medication
after consulting with their
owners,” he said.
“The community was so
welcoming and receptive
to the services we provided
and we are so grateful to
them for our wonderful
experience.”

the program within remote
communities is vital.
“This work assists us to
manage the dog population
in the community and
address their health as
well, so the benefit for the
community is significant,”

including Fire and Rescue
Auxiliaries and volunteers,
Health Centre staff and police
to enjoy a night out together.

The Jabiru Police are always
out in our region, often in

The Health Clinic, provides
an open door health service
during normal business hours
also provide 24/7 emergency
coverage.
They perform a very active
ambulance service, providing
care and emergency transport
in remote areas at all hours,
regularly performing critical
care on patients whilst waiting
on CareFlight for aerial patient
transport back to Darwin.
The Jabiru Fire Station
provides a 24/7 fire, rescue
and support role to incidents
both within Jabiru and across
Kakadu National Park and
into Arnhem Land.
This closed event allows
members and their partners a
rare opportunity to socialise
together.
The event will be a formal
dress occasion with a four
course meal, several small
challenges and old school
lawn games throughout the
night, presentations and dance
floor.
This ball will also mark the
send off for Station Officer
Hutton who has been a
resident of Jabiru and the
Officer in Command of the
Jabiru Fire Station for the last
two and a half years.
A special thanks to the
members of these services
who will be remaining on call
during this ball to continue to
provide the 24/7 services that
we are gathered to celebrate.
Jabiru Public TEAM Health raising awareness of National Men’s Health
Week.
As part of the National Men’s Health Week, Jabiru Public
Team Health organised in collaboration with local stakeholders
and Darwin outreach health service providers an information
display, barbecue and local music band Black Rock Band near
their building on Friday, June 17.
The purpose of Men’s Health Week is to increase the awareness
of preventable health problems and encourage early detection
and treatment of disease and infirmity among men and boys.
It’s an opportunity for primary and public health care
providers to encourage men and boys to seek regular medical
advice and early interventions for chronic diseases and harm,
especially around smoking, sexual health and alcohol and
other drugs.

Census on Tuesday, 9 August.
The delivery of 8 million 2016
Census Instruction Letters
from ABS continue arriving
at households around the
country. The letters, addressed
‘To the Resident’, contain
information for households
about how to complete the
Census on Tuesday, 9 August.
Northern Australia Census
Director, Anthony Grubb says
the delivery of the letters marks
a new era of Census taking that
will see the Census easier to
complete than ever before.
“The information contained
in the letter, including a
unique login code, will enable
Territorians to go online and
complete their Census easily
and securely on August 9.
There’s also information on
how to request a paper form if
required.”
“People living in remote
areas, including in Aboriginal
and Torres Strait Islander
communities, will receive
a visit by Census Officers
working in mobile teams,” Mr
Grubb said.
All information provided is
kept private and secure.
The ABS cannot and will not
ever release your identifiable
Census data.
The Census is compulsory

around 30 minutes for an

favourite spot for both tourists
and Territorians, attracting
250,000 visitors last year.

With just over 3 weeks to go to the election, I have been hitting
the road to visit many of my constituents. In West Arnhem, I
have been speaking with people about housing, employment for
local people and the health and wellbeing of our families.
As someone who has lived on an outstation in the Tiwi Islands
with my wife and at times, my many grandchildren, I continue
to advocate for better housing services whilst maintaining our
cultural connections to country.
I have been focusing on how infrastructure, roads and housing
will continue to involve local people and local jobs. The recent
release of my government’s $2 billion Remote Housing program
will provide new housing, substantial upgrades and jobs in
housing.
I am looking forward to heading over to Minjilang and Warruwi
and talking to people about opportunities for their communities
and kids. It will be great to share some of the excellent examples
that are happening in my own community of Tiwi Islands and
how economic development can and should occur on Aboriginal
land.Of course, we all know that to the health and education
of our communities are critical in improving the life of our
communities.
Recently in Malabam, I heard first-hand of the good work
of Malabam Health in supporting the wellbeing of our young
people. I was pleased to support the work of Malabam Health,
presenting them with an Aboriginal flag for their office (pictured
below). As an ex teacher & youth worker, I really want to create
opportunities that give our kids a better chance in life.
Helping my local schools find funds for important infrastructure
projects to support kids learning has been a highlight this month.
Jabiru Area School will use these funds for an outdoor learning
space and Gunbalanya School kids will no doubt think that there
HUGE fan is very ‘cool’.

Jabiru Library has had an
influx of visitors over the last
few weeks as local children
and their parents took part in
the school holiday activities.

Jillian May said the facility
has had a surprisingly large
amount of families come along
to the various activities.
“It’s been unusually busy
- we didn’t expect so many
people,” Jillian said.
“The art and craft activities
have been a big success, and
we’ve also had board games,
story
telling
boomerang
decorating as part of the
NAIDOC Week recently.”
“Traditionally, families go
away for school holidays, but
we’ve had heaps of kids as
well as parents coming along.”
Jillian also said the various
activities have also attracted
older kids to the facility.
“The age group has been
around five to 12 year olds,
and it’s been great seeing the
older children come along.”

COUNCIL SURPLUS VEHICLES AND
EQUIPMENT GO TO ONLINE AUCTION

Arnhem
Regional
Council disposed of a number
of surplus vehicles and plant
items
from
Gunbalanya
through an online auction held
from 22-26 July.
The items up for auction
included various plant items
and two utilities, all of which
were no longer required by
council or beyond further
repair.
The public auction was held
on graysonline.com and council
intends to hold more auctions
throughout the year.
Income from the sales will be
utilised to ensure council’s fleet
of vehicles and plant is kept upto-date.

YOUTH TAKE THE STAGE THESE HOLIDAYS

discos,
basketball clinics, camps and
fishing trips were just some of
many activities on the school
holiday calendar for children in
Gunbalanya, organised through
West Arnhem Regional Council.

Coordinator Sharna Cropley
said
there
were
many
highlights
throughout
the
holidays, including a visit from
Indigenous Hip Hop Project
which ran a 10 day Hip Hop
dance workshop for all the
young people in Gunbalanya.
“This led to an awesome
community event which was
held on July 2,” Sharna said.
In addition to this, a special crew
were selected to participate in a
separate project, to learn a dance
and represent Gunbalanya at
the ‘K-Town Massive’- a dance
event held in Katherine on
Territory Day.
As part of this they made
a documentary about the
Katherine trip and IHHP also
produced a dance tutorial for
the ‘Gunbalanya Dance’.
The second highlight of the
program was the production of
a song and video clip through
a 2 –week activity based
multimedia program.
Run by Live Vibe Music, the
theme of the program was
‘strong kids’ with participants
enjoying a range of activities
including shooting on a green
screen, plasticine modelling,
location shoots, colour powder,
make
over
sessions
and
recording sessions.
The children enjoyed a trip up Injalak Hill to learn about the rock art as
part of the school holiday program in Gunbalanya.
UPCOMING COLOUR FUN RUN A
MAJOR FUNDRAISER FOR SCHOOL
Jabiru will be a splash of
colour on Thursday, August
11 for the much anticipated
Colour Fun Run, held by the
Jabiru Area School.
The event is a major
fundraiser for the school,
with all money raised going
towards new playground
equipment and IT updates
for student learning.
A colour run involves
children participating in a fun
run with plenty of coloured
holi powder thrown around
to celebrate.
The event kicks off at 5pm
at the Majela Oval with holi
powder on sale as well as
food and drinks and great
raffle prizes.
The young ones took part in a multimedia program run by Live Vibe
Music which included the production of a song and video clip.
The
community
is
encouraged to take part in
this fun event and help raise
money for the Jabiru Area
School.

Club on July 16 and 17.

ALLIGATOR FISHING
CLUB HOST FUN DAY
The Alligator Fishing Club
will once again hold the Kids
Fishing Fun Day on Saturday,
August 6 at Yellow Waters,
Cooinda.
Running for two years now,
the event has proved very
popular with 35 children
nominated for the 2015 Fun
Day.
Alligator

President Tanya McKay said,
“it was great to see a huge
turnout for it.”
“The kids all receive a
goodie bag and certificate for
participating,” she said.
Tanya said many families
make the most of the weekend
and camp the night with
the fishing club putting on a
barbecue for breakfast and
dinner as well as a movie for
the kids.
This year’s event will also
include a casting competition
near the pool at Cooinda after
the event, giving the children a
chance to show off their casting

The 18th Annual 2016 Jabiru
Ambrose Golf Weekend will
include the Darrin Andrew

Memorial

person) 18-hole ambrose event
on Saturday and the Kidsafe
NT Dry Season nine-hole
ambrose the following day.
Teams of four, individuals
and non-players are welcome,
and no golf handicap is
required.
All are invited to take part
in this fun event while raising
money for an important cause.
Dedicated to preventing
unintentional
childhood
injuries
and
reducing
the resulting deaths and
disabilities
associated
with injuries, Kidsafe is an
important organisation in
Australia.

A group of young basketball
players from Minjilang went to
Batchelor in June to represent
West Arnhem in the Northern
Cup.
The
participants
were
incredibly excited to take on the
two-day regional basketball
tournament which included
regional and remote Territory
teams. West Arnhem Regional
Council Sport and Recreation
Officer Matthew Nagarlbin
did a great job supporting the
team at the competition and
organising all the permission
slips and conversations with
the families beforehand.
“They didn’t win but they
had so much fun,” said Matty.
The program was supported
by the NT Government.

GREAT RESULTS AT 2016 DEADLY FUN RUN
Four months of training has
paid off for the Kakadu Deadly
Runners
who
represented
the region at the National
Indigenous Deadly Fun Run
Championship held in Uluru
on July 16.
Not only was it the first time
in history that a team from
Kakadu has participated in the
championship, but the Kakadu
squad also took out second
place in the 10 kilometre relay
event and fourth place overall.

event and their individual races.
Leah Baker was also selected
but was unable to participate.
“It was an amazing weekend
- they did really good. They all
worked hard and the results
showed,” Emma said.
In the junior men’s three
kilometre event, Jaxen received
first place with Caylis close
behind in eleventh place and
Aaiden finishing in seventeenth
place.
Emily also finished second
overall in the senior women’s
five kilometre event.
The relay event was certainly a
highlight for the team with the
race beginning in the Mutitjulu
community and continued
around Uluru itself.
After the race, a ceremony
was held at Mutitjula where
participants
handed
their
batons to the senior traditional
owner Reggie Uluru.
“We had Caylis as our last
runner (in the relay). Though
he was nervous, myself and
Trish believed he was up to the
challenge and wanted him to
have the honour of running the
last leg to finish it off for us,”
Emma said.
She also said the competition
wasn’t just about winning, but
also about improving health,
fitness and your mind.
“It’s about having the right
attitude and being a role model
or potential role model in the
community.
“The best thing for me is
hearing that the team want to
keep running after this.”

camp in Kakadu in the near

Runners will also run a nineweek beginner program with
all members of the community
