DRIVESHAFT Publication of Lambda Car Club International • Autumn 2013 • Vol. 26 Issue 6 Beach Ball 2013 Wrap-up “Mid-Century Madness” By Barry Bugg, Straight Eights President; photos by Mark Sleith Beach Ball 2013 was a celebration of MidCentury Modern design and style, especially as the era affected automotive design. This was an era of great prosperity, thinking about the atomic age and reflecting a time with no limits as we raced into outer space. The cars of the period reflected this. The Straight Eights annual invitational at Rehoboth Beach, Delaware, embraced this theme from beginning to end as we enjoyed a weekend of fellowship and cars. The weather just could not have been any better for a few days at the beach. Continued on page eight 1959 Lincoln Continental Mark IV owned by John Kost and Glen Thompson. Thus his keyboard/data entry duties have been temporarily curtailed. We look forward to a message from him in the next issue, and in the meantime, wish him a speedy recovery. He faces a long period of rehabilitation, but hopes to be walking again around Christmas time. We wish Charlie a complete recovery. dation of his building. While the water drained away quickly, it left behind a lot of damage. At this time, it is not clear when his business will be up and running again. With help from associates and friends, he is attempting to salvage what he can. We send our wishes to Wayne that he may be back in business soon. LCCI Elections Around the same time as this edition of the newsletter is released, candidate information and ballots will be sent to members. Past President Bill Hicks has developed a wellqualified slate of candidates for the LCCI Board. The term of office will be from 2014-2016. Colorado Flooding SACK Region Editor Joel Klassen reports that the recent Colorado floods hit one of our own. Wayne Maddox, featured in our regular Crusher Save articles, suffered major damage at his property in September. All of the cars in the back of his property were completely covered in water. The force of the raging water was so powerful that it created a large hole in the foun- The postcard ballots are due by December 23, so please take a moment, study the candidates, and return your ballots promptly. DRIVESHAFT Crusher Misses Out on British Snack By Joel Klassen, photos by Wayne Maddox SACK Region’s member Wayne Maddox can cross another item off his bucket list. When he got the call from his buddy at the car crusher saying he had a Rolls Royce, Wayne says he thought “does this guy really think I am that gullible (or stupid)”? But after he described the grille and hood ornament, Wayne got thinking maybe he wasn’t kidding. The car was said to have some rust and the front bumper was inside the car. He wanted $750 for it with a good title. Wayne told him he’d buy the car and sent his assistant down with the trailer and a check. He returned about an hour later and Wayne hurried outside to behold a genuine 1969 Rolls Royce Silver Shadow sitting on the trailer! Wayne reflects upon his good fortune before heading out to herd cats in his “beater” Rolls Royce. Wayne says the car is obviously far from show quality. The paint is weak and it needs interior work. But it does have its original The keys were in the ignition and when they opened the trunk, “Spirit of Ecstasy” hood ornament which, according to many, they found four color-keyed hubcaps! Beach Ball 2013 continued from front cover Attendees began arriving Thursday at the Atlantic Sands Hotel and Conference Center, and picked up their registration packets. They contained all the information they needed for the weekend, and a CD filled with music from the period. After they got squared away at registration, we went up to the rooftop. There we enjoyed an evening cocktail reception featuring drink specials and appetizers, under a full moon shining on a calm ocean. Our entertainer, Cathy Gorman, sang songs of the day wearing her long gloves and fur wrap to complete the look. It was a very nice evening, and still left a lot of time for some of the more tireless boys to head to the nearby bars for dancing, karaoke, and possibly another cocktail. business jets are customized for their wealthy owners. As we were touring the hangars and planes, the employees were in the parking lot checking out all of our cars. It is hard to say who was more impressed, we or they! Friday morning, we enjoyed a breakfast buffet at nearby Café Azafran. It’s the third year in a row we’ve used them and they did not disappoint. After breakfast our guests could elect to spend the day poolside or on the beach, or shop at the nearby tax free outlets. Forty-nine of us caravanned out to nearby Georgetown Delaware to visit PATS Aircraft, where large private Saturday brought more sunshine. After a quick wash and detail, we were able to get our cars all lined up for the car show. The town always turns out for this annual event, and we had a lot of foot traffic for the show. Lunch was provided outside by the hotel, so show participants could easily grab a bite to eat while voting for their favorites in the show categories. There Following our tour at PATS, we stopped for lunch at Bethany Blues for a delicious BBQ buffet lunch. Then it was back to the hotel for a couple hours of relaxation before the evening activities. We arranged for a private showing of It’s a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World. Since it is a very long movie, we continued our Mid-Century Modern theme by enjoying an adult beverage and half-priced appetizers at Hooked Seafood and Martini Bar, in the same shopping center before the show. LCCI’s Austin Region pulled about a dozen cars together to provide local politicians a ‘ridein-style’ in this year’s Austin Pride Parade. “It always works out; we just don’t know it will until the last minute.” I think I heard Rick Kirvoniak chanting this a few dozen times that last week before the parade. Thanks for herding cats for us again this year, Rick! It must be the rapid advancement of marriage equality initiatives in America this past year, because Pride Week was off-the hook huge for this small town in the heart of the Lone Star State. Capitol Metro was in the mix in a huge way, and gay law enforcement and military groups were out. Visitors from outside of Austin came from around the state to celebrate with our capitol in the background. Capitol Metro in Pride Drag. Our club’s entry included an impressive variety of cars for such a small region, and we scored two Rolls Royce convertibles and a Rambler Ambassador that joined us from San Antonio. A very short shower, just as we lined up, cooled our hot evening into a very nice one. It gave an extra sparkle to our group of revelers and their cars. Stella, our ‘74 Eldorado Convertible, came to us this year sporting some pretty loud glass-packs. Once her horn played out, our girl turned redneck and started talking to the crowd. Between the couple in the back seat making-out and a classy Caddy gone rogue, the crowds were screaming like crazy... until the exhaust fumes claimed them! One way to help is to keep your windshield clean, and streak free where possible. A way to do this is to apply Rain-X to your windshield and other windows to help bead and carry the water and winter slop out of your way. (www.rainx.com) Rain-X is a relatively simple liquid treatment that primarily is used on your windshield and rear windows, to help the water bead and quickly dissipate. Thus, it increases your driving vision capability during rain, sleet, and road grime travel days. Rain-X is excellent for vintage automobiles with vacuum wipers, as well as the latest vehicle to roll off of the assembly line. The best part about Rain-X is you do not have to be a professional to treat your windows! Not only can this save money by extending the life of your windshield wipers, but it can save your wiper motor as well since your wipers won’t have to work as hard to keep the windshield clean. This is a quick guide on how to treat your windows properly, and to prep for the weather ahead. Rain-X now comes in a variety of formulas, from the base formulation, all the way up to a full featured product with a cleaner and solution built in. These products can be purchased at your local superstores, automotive chain stores, and many other vendors. The large two-in-one formulation is a cleaner and treatment in one bottle. As a purist, the below steps will guide you through using the traditional 100-percent strength Rain-X. Step 1. Obtain a few 100-percent cotton or microfiber cloths, or good paper towels, and clean the windshield with a glass cleaner such as Windex. Or, you can use the Rain-X Deep Cleaning Windshield Kit that comes complete with a glass clay bar, to get stubborn debris off. Once it’s clean to a sparkle, proceed to step 2. Step 2. Apply Rain-X to a clean cloth and rub it in a circular motion on the glass to create a haze. If you choose the spray bottle route, you can spray it directly onto the automotive glass, and then rub the Rain-X into the glass with a clean cloth. Step 3. Once the haze has dried, re-apply to fill all porous voids in the glass and allow it to dry. Step 4. Wipe off haze with a clean cloth or paper towel, buff to a shine, and you’re ready to go! Does your rear window tend to get caked with dirt and mud? Apply it to the rear window, too. This will greatly reduce the amount of mud, water, and salty film that can otherwise collect, and obstruct, your rearward vision. Don’t forget their other fab products, such as their anti-fog for the inside of your windshield as well! Heavy breather? Fret no more! Rain-X Anti-Fog is an excellent product that will reduce the fogging effect in the winter time. The same application style is used, but on the inside of the windshield. If a slight haze exists, Rain-X recommends using a small amount of water to help reduce the haze. For more information visit www.bentgears.com.
