The story of Snow White and
the Seven Dwarfs is one of
the most popular of all time,
and has all the ingredients
of a classic tale: a Beautiful
Princess, a Handsome Prince,
a Good Fairy and a Wicked
Queen, and of course there’s
Muddles and a Dame, a
magic mirror and seven of the
craziest little people you’ve
ever seen. We’re delighted to
announce that legendary Welsh
actress and singer, Ruth Madoc,
perhaps best known for her
role as Gladys Pugh in Hi de Hi,
stars as the Wicked Queen, and
Channel 5′s Milkshake presenter,
Jen Pringle, plays Snow White.
Back by popular demand is
Denbigh born actor, Sean Jones,
as Muddles and James Lusted,
Olympic Torchbearer and subject
of his own documentary on S4C,
Byd Mawr y Dyn Bach (The Small
Man’s Big World) plays Sneezer.
No Panto would be complete
without a fabulous Pantomime
Dame, played this year by Jamie
Steen. Snow White comes with a
full supporting cast and includes
two talented local dance schools
- Gay Harris Dancers and North
Wales School of Dance. A show
bursting with great songs, dance

The Norman
Beaker Blues Trio

Three legendary Blues artistes
play the music of B.B. King,
Howlin’ Wolf, Buddy Guy and
other dignitaries of the genre,
as well as their own brand of
originals. The trio are among
the final links to the history
of the Blues, having played
and recorded with the most
influential Blues artists on both
sides of the Atlantic.
They have many stories of
these greats and have taken on
their influences.
Norman Beaker (Guitar, vocals,
harmonica) has been at the
forefront of the British Blues
scene since the late 60’s, playing
with USA and UK greats such as
Alexis Korner, Graham Bond, the
late Jack Bruce, Tony Ashton,
Paul Jones, Eric Burdon and
many others. John Price (bass,
vocals) is one of the busiest
bassists in the field, having
played and recorded with Van
Morrison, Chris Farlowe, Eric
Burdon, Tony Ashton, Tony
McPhee, Herbie Goins and Mick
Abrahams. John has been in the
band for over twenty years. Steve
Gibson (Drums, Percussion) has
worked with the Buzzcocks and
has become one of the most
sought-after percussionists,
working with Chris Farlowe,
Larry Garner, Herbie Goins, Irma
Thomas and Jack Bruce.

Exhibitions
Lost In Art
Throughout January,
February and March
Open daily 10am5.30pm
Lost in Art is a project for
engaging people aged 50+
with dementia, along with their
family members and carers.
Each week, participants
visit the galleries at Ruthin
Craft Centre where they view
and respond to exhibitions;
working alongside artist
Sian Hughes they produce
artwork with the gallery
acting as starting point and
inspiration. The aim of the
project is to explore the role of
the visual arts in addressing
issues which can affect people
with dementia, including
social isolation, confidence,
communication and quality of life
and wellbeing. This season the
group were inspired by Eleanor
Glover’s film ‘Dogshaped’

‘Away’. Children from Ysgol
Frongoch worked alongside
the Lost in Art group to make
a collaborative artwork, over
several sessions. For the first of
these, the 14 pupils from year
5 visited Ruthin Craft Centre,
where they were introduced
to the work of Eleanor Glover
and Julie Arkell followed by
workshop, where the Lost In Art
Group had the opportunity to
share their creative ideas with
the children. Two weeks later,
Lost in Art members visited the
pupils at their school to continue
developing their work ending
with a celebratory pop-up
exhibition in the school which
was attended by other pupils,
Wales’s biggest open studios
event. In September members
of the public are invited to
visit the studios of over 200
artists to peek behind the
scenes and experience this
normally hidden world, and
chat to the artists and crafts
people about their creative
process. This exhibition
presents artwork by a
selection of Helfa Gelf / Art
Trail members.

All in the Mind is an exhibition
of work by 4 former students
on the Applied Art course at
Glyndŵr University.
The artists present 2 and 3
dimensional works in ceramics,
glass, silver, enameled copper,
textiles and mixed media. The
work is the result of a period of
exploring and developing new
ideas, each artist trying to push
the boundaries of their practice.
It has been their goal to exhibit
together since graduating in
2010.

An exhibition to celebrate
artwork created by
Denbighshire’s second
Dementia and Imagination
group. Artwork made by
members of Dementia and
Imagination are presented
in this exhibition. Dementia
and Imagination is a UK-wide
research project looking at the
effects of visual arts on the
quality of life of people with
dementia and their carers.
The project is funded by the
Arts and Humanities Research
Council and the Economic
and Social Research Council.
For the purposes of the
project a team of experts
has been drawn together
from seven universities, four
national and seven regional
organisations,including Bangor
University and Denbighshire
County Council Arts Service.
Participants visited the gallery
at Rhyl Library over a period
of 12 weeks to view and
respond to exhibitions; working
alongside artist Sian Hughes to
produce their own artwork.

David Poston:
Necklace for an
Elephant and Other
Stories

This exhibition traces Poston’s
life and his achievements,
not only in jewellery, but also
photography, engineering,
invention, process design and
international development.
Unconventional throughout
his career, he has designed
a necklace for an elephant,
photographed bands like The
Rolling Stones in concert
and developed life-changing
training projects in Africa.
The connecting thread is his
mission to better understand
problems and to solve them,
to improve people’s lives.

Automata are a source of
intrigue and delight. They
have been about for millennia;
examples are sighted in Greek
mythology, some intended as
tools, toys, religious idols, or
prototypes for demonstrating
basic scientific principles.
They delight children, and
adults too are fascinated and
engaged by these interactive
objects; we all love to push a
button or turn a handle and
see something happen in front
of our eyes. This exhibition
shows a group of automata
from eleven British makers,
who have developed their own
ways of making things move.
Some, perhaps, take us back
to the slot machines on piers
in our childhood, where a
figure would burst into action
leaving us wide eyed with
amazement!

Walter Keeler

Function is a central issue in
every pot that Walter Keeler
makes; rising to the challenge
of utilitarian demands he
experiences a timeless
pleasure in useful objects.
Making playful reference to
the eccentric inventiveness of
the emerging pottery industry
in 18th century Staffordshire,
thorns and branches
which seem daunting, even
threatening, are turned to
practical ends as thumb holds
on handles. This is not just a
teapot, it is an artefact with
rich meaning.

Walter Keeler:
Talk and
Demonstration

Walter Keeler will begin the
afternoon with an illustrated
talk outlining the origins of
his interest in pottery, and
the development of his work
starting with his time as a
student at Harrow School of
Art in the 1960s. The talk will
also include Walter Keeler’s
influences and sources of
inspiration, looking at Walter’s
recent ideas for new extruded
forms.

Artist in Residence:
Alana Tyson
Until 28/01/15
Alana Tyson’s work attempts
to make sense of the world
she inhabits. Dismayed by
such platitudes as “that is
how it has always been,” her
questioning takes the form
of performance, sculpture
and installation. Repetition
and mark making are key
aesthetic elements in her
work.
The build up of a simple mark,
movement or idea can create
a complex work that calls
for reassessment. Alana’s
questioning does not provide
answers but she is striving to
elicit reactions in the viewer,
maybe to comfort but also
to evoke laughter or even
unnerve. Alana will be creating
an installation that is a part of
her series Interiors and based
on the hypocrisy of the phrase
“it’s what’s on the inside that
counts.” During Alana Tyson’s
residency at Ruthin Craft
Centre she will be working with
different community groups
inspired by her new body of
work. Alana will be in residence
in the project spaces on certain
days between the 10 November
2014 and 28 February 2015.

Delight In
The Everyday

The Design Commission for
Wales is pleased to collaborate
with Ruthin Craft Centre on an
exhibition which recognises
quality in the everyday in
Wales – the homes, public
places, schools, work places,
parks, shops and community
buildings which we enjoy, and
which form the background
to everyday life. Delight in
the Everyday celebrates the
simple pleasures found in the
unassuming buildings and places
which eschew louder ambition
and are entirely appropriate
and delightful in their simplicity.
The Commission has selected
several designers working in
the built environment in Wales
to contribute exhibits which
explore the theme of Delight in
the Everyday. From the simple
planting of wildflowers to
brighten up a dull roadside, to a
study of the search for thermal
comfort in a courtyard house, the
designers consider some of the
infinite variety of ways in which
good design contributes to our
enjoyment of day to day life.

Lisa Eurgain Taylor

Lisa Eurgain Taylor is inspired
by the natural environment, and
the mountains of Snowdonia
in particular. She draws on
her memories and dreams
to create landscapes which
blend reality and fantasy. Her
unique use of colour conveys
an otherworldly light and
atmosphere.She mainly paints in
oils but sometimes incorporates
lino-prints. Denbighshire County
Council Arts Service is pleased to
present her work in our galleries
for the first time.
Lisa Eurgain Taylor was raised
in Rhosmeirch, Anglesey,
and she attended Llangefni
Comprehensive School, Coleg
Menai and Wimbledon College of
Art. In 2013 she graduated with
a BA (Hons) in Fine Art: Painting
and since then has returned to
live and work on Anglesey.

Printing Workshop
The workshop will cover the
use of thermofax screens
to print onto a variety of
fabrics using fabric or
screen inks. The finished
fabric can then be used
for a variety of patchwork
projects. The screen inks
and use of screens
are included in the
cost of the workshop.

Coverlet Revisited
The 1718 Silk Patchwork
Coverlet has survived
almost 300 years and is
an exceptional record of
patchwork form the early
18th century consisting of 69
individual blocks constructed
using mosaic patchwork.
In August, Susan Briscoe
published this book which
gives details all the blocks.
You will be making blocks
from this coverlet from
patterns provided. We will
look at recreating a selection
of geometric and pictorial
blocks using modern
patchwork and applique
methods.
