Randstadrail station Address Prinses Beatrixlaan 2595 Den Haag Netherlands . Randstadrail is a project for a new light urban rail network between The Hague and Rotterdam and runs partly over existing tram and railway tracks. This new viaduct is built over the entire length of the Beatrixlaan, with a new station halfway. The space-frame tubular construction follows the curve that Joan Busquets has set out for the alignments and the roadways on the Beatrixlaan. For a length of 400 m the viaduct is constructed from a skeleton structure of rings of mild-steel strips with a diameter of about 10 m, interconnected by diagonally set tubes to form an open tube structure. The relatively great structural height of the tube makes it easy to cover the large spans. The construction will be supported by V-shaped columns and provides room for two tracks for passing trains. Thanks to the big spans of 40 and 50 m there are relatively few columns at street level. There is also hardly any visual obstruction at eye level, so that social safety and traffic safety are not compromised . Project is public! . Waterwijk Ypenburg Address Stiemensvaart 48 2497 ZE Den Haag Netherlands http://waterwijk.ypenburg.nu/ . Hagen Island offers an attractive image, for consumption by a broad range of people. Clearly, the project does not aspire to appeal to just an elite group of artistic souls 'receptive' to such housing. Almost half the houses are for the rental sector, while the rest are for sale at prices of between 3.5 and 5.5 million guilders. One section of the neighbourhood is now inhabited and signs of domesticity are already visible - flower pots, paved paths, lace decorations. MVRDV styling, it would seem, has not influenced residents' preferences. The large sliding glass doors on each floor reveal the interiors ranging from curving plastic bedroom kitsch to Scandinavian timber cosiness. The greatest quality of these houses is just how smoothly they accommodate the everyday. Personal touches do not detract from the overall picture, as so often happens with housing schemes that aspire to the title Architecture. photo: Rositsa Andreeva . Project is not public! . 'Sculptures by the sea ' is an oasis of tranquility. It is built underneath and around an old Pavilion erected in 1826 by King William. A quiet place filled with sculptures of man. The work of the well-known Dutch architect Wim Quist is at its best in this museum, in its surprising variety in size, light, shape and level. The museum is built partly in a dune, and has a large hall filled with daylight, patios and terraces. The collection of mr. and mrs. At Ypenburg, the new branch of the Atlas College of Rijswijk occupies a characteristic location at the entrance to this brand-new residential area. The programme has been divided over four floors linked in space by large voids and staircases. The main plan of the building is straightforward, consisting of a ring of classrooms around a number of large lobbies. Daylight enters the spaces within the ring through skylights and patios. Within its deceptively simple and clear exterior, the building manages to create a many-faceted world of light, air and space that does justice to the theme of the Atlas College, ‘stirring splendour’. . In the heart of the 12 storey complex is the 50m high internal atrium: one of the largest indoor public spaces in Europe known as the Citizens Hall. All local municipal offices, central and public desk-facilities are grouped around the atrium. The elements of this mega-facility are combined with a semi-independent rental office building at its north-eastern end and extensive shopping frontage throughout the ground floor. The central library has its own entrance and is located at the extreme northwestern corner, where its dynamic form imparts a strong character to the principal plaza. Inside and out, the structure is clad in white, porcelain-enamelled metal panels, measuring 85 by 180 cm. Subsequently, the whole building is set up by a multiple of 45 cm. The glass roof of the atrium is supported by free-spanning laminated timber trusses incorporating sunscreens, maintenance walkways, and light fixtures. Werlemann . photo: Michael Buschor . . Netherlands Dance Theater Address Schedeldoekshaven 60 2511 EN Den Haag Netherlands http://www.ndt.nl/ . The Netherlands Dance Theatre, completed in 1987, was originally conceived in 1980 as an extension to a circus theatre in Scheveningen, the seaside of The Hague. In 1984, the design was adapted to a new site - the Spui Complex - in the centre. At that time this new context was undergoing substantial change. Now the Dance Theatre shares the Spui Complex with a concert hall (van Mourik, architect), the town hall (white building by Richard Meier) and a hotel designed by Carel Weeber (also the planner of the complex). What would have been a flamboyant exterior reflecting the holiday vernacular of Scheveningen, became, in the city centre, a humble building (with the exception of the billboard/mural), which almost disappears between its extroverted neighbors. Although there was minimal collaboration between OMA and the architects of the concert hall, the buildings’ physical proximity generated a shared foyer - a 7 m wide alley between the two buildings. photo: Pan Sok & Jaap Ruurs Fotografie . Paard van Troje Address Prinsegracht 12 2512 GA Den Haag Netherlands http://www.paard.nl . The biggest pop venue in The Hague has a new adaptable pop and rock concert hall behind a classic exterior. The Paard van Troje (Trojan Horse) can handle 1100 visitors in the main venue and a cosy 300 in the smaller hall. The Netherlands National Trust for Historic Buildings protected one of the two buildings that form the centre, while the other building had only its authentic facade left. By removing the old construction behind the historic facade, a complicated problem of space and acoustics could be solved efficiently: the small concert hall was positioned directly behind the historic facade while the large concert hall was constructed on the backside of the two buildings and is also reachable through an adjacent street. The Paard van Troje is known for its eclectic programming featuring: Pop, Rock Hiphop, Jazz, Blues, Americana, world-music, stand-up comedy and dancing.…sometimes even on the same evening. photo: Paard van Troje . Souterrain Tram Tunnel Address Grote Marktstraat 11 2511 BH Den Haag Netherlands . Urban plans to make The Hague denser (space to expand is only found inside the city, since it’s confined by sea, highway and neighbouring cities) ánd minimize traffic on street level has urged the municipality to go underground. The city had a long and difficult process developing this multistory 1250 m long underground tunnel with two stops for trams combined with 500 parking spaces. The construction floor was leaking and damaged the surroundings. So the whole tunnel was entirely flooded to keep surrounding buildings form collapsing. It got several nicknames ‘tramtanic’ and ‘swimtunnel’. Construction could only be finished under high pressure air to prevent the water to enter. After 4 years of delay, costs largely exceeded budget (130 million euro) and the Dutch government started asking questions. When finished and all ‘problems’ left behind, the project won several prizes. It definitely proved architecture can have a positive effect when applied to the rigor of transport pragmatism. photo: Naomi Schiphorst . Project is public! . . . . . . . . For the northern part of seaside the boulevard of Scheveningen, opposite of the Carlton Beach Hotel, the London-based collective FAT (Fashion Architecture Taste) has designed a guard house, a surveillance hut for a bicycle park, which is hidden inside a white mound. The small building is part of a rampart with battlements. The hut is contained in an object that is part monument, part strange fortification and part folly, deriving from seaside architecture, fortifications, lighthouses and earthworks. On top of the mound there is a miniature model of a typically Dutch house. The ‘House on the Hill' that “periodically catches fire” i.e. frequently produces 'special effects' like bolts of lightning or puffs of smoke, inspired by the nearby lighthouse. In 2005 the FAT guard house received the FX Award 'Best Public Project' . In 2006 it was included in a new series of stamps dedicated to contemporary art, issued by TPG Post (Royal Dutch Mail). . Bicycle Repair Shop Address Zeekant 1 2586 AA Den Haag Netherlands http://www.biesieklette.nl/stallingdenhaagstrandweg.htm . For the seaside location on Scheveningen boulevard the Dutch artist/architect John Körmeling (Eindhoven) has designed a pavilion which looks somewhat like a pre-war petrol station. The little building is equipped with a marquee with room for a bicycle repair shop. An efficiently furnished office space offers a view in all directions. The roof's edge is decorated with typical ‘bicycle words' like ‘pedal’, ‘fresh air for your tires’ and ‘friend’, in little happy flickering lights. John Körmeling has a very unconventional take on architecture and makes an art of building, urban planning and visual art. He’s blessed with an infectious imagination. This is reflected in his humorous and clever solutions to all kinds of issues. John Kormerling has also built the Netherlands Pavilion at the Expo 2010 in Shanghai (China) with his design ’happy street’. photo: Naomi Schiphorst . Project is public! . Watervillas and Waterhoeves Address Hegemanwater 1 2497 ZE Den Haag Netherlands . A cluster of eight houses forms a peninsula in the water. Its character is wholly determined by its waterside location. The superstructure is shaped like a boat; instead of a garden each house has a large deck-like terrace, and there are places where the young people can park their own boats. 4 houses, 4-under-one-roof, as it were, form a gatehouse, each one equal with respect to location and view. Each house with its three storeys offers a highly flexible layout. Apart from the traditional layout with separate rooms, everything can be left open which makes for enormous spatiality, while the house lends itself to individual solutions. All 3 floors can be used as the living area, while the ground floor, most of which is on the water, can be used for sleeping. The ground floor can also be fitted out as a completely separate surgery and/or office space. The large partially covered terraces are not overlooked and therefore provide a high degree of privacy (text from architect's website). . Project is not public! . The area is characterized by traditional brick architecture but the urban plan prescribed a few private housing developments at specific points in the area. The organization of the house and its position on the plot is aimed at the sun. The entrance, garage, bathrooms and storage rooms are all located at the north east side. The living room, dining room, bedrooms and the terraces are all located at the south side. A spacious garden on the sunny side is created by moving the house as much as possible to the north side of the plot. The living room has a glass façade with large sliding doors. De Baljurk Address Kettingstraat 2511 AM Den Haag Netherlands . Archipelontwerpers produced a design for the renovation of 8 shops in the historical centre of The Hague. The street where they stand formed an exception in the otherwise beautifully refurbished city centre: the dilapidated dwellings above the shops stood empty and many of the buildings were boarded up; the public space was neglected. The client, property developer Geste, wanted to build something that would give the neighbourhood a boost. The façades of the buildings were restored and behind them new dwellings were built, accessed from a raised terrace. Below ground level is a large retail space with a flexible floor plan. The 8th, corner building has a new glass curtain wall draped in a golden steel mesh that lends the whole project an exclusive air. Attention-getting was not the only reason for choosing a sculptural form - it also alludes to the formal idiom of the Art Nouveau architecture in the immediate vicinity and to the sinuous course of the stream that once flowed here. . Centre Ypenburg Address Steentijdsingel 7 2496 SG Den Haag Netherlands http://www.ypenburg.nl/ . On the former airport Ypenburg, near Nootdorp, next to Delft, a large new neighbourhood has been built, with a clearly defined centre. A series of high-rise housing combined with commercial space was designed by Rapp + Rapp and has a very urban character, in stong contrast to the mainly single-family-dwelling set up of the rest of Ypenburg. The skyline of these marking towers glows in the dark and function as a beacon and general orientation as they are clearly visible from far away. The design is inspired by the Toscan city of San Gimignano with its (formerly 70, now) 13 medieval towers. These towers were built by upper class families who wanted to outshine each other by building an even higher tower. Apart from creating a wonderful new visual identity for Ypenburg, Rapp + Rapp succeeded in making interesting public space by narrowing the streets inbetween the towers. This way the dense urban feeling is enhanced. . Project is not public! . . . . . . . MVRDV designed the four villas as single-storey units, with a roof deck on top, they can be glued together. This wooden amalgam can be lifted up to 12 metres high, allowing a water space underneath with private water decks, a parking lot, a dock for private boats, and a communal bench overlooking the lake, all positioned on wooden decks within the reed. In the early 20th cent. architect Hendrik Petrus Berlage (1856-1934) was the foremost pioneer in the field of modern architecture in the Netherlands. The controversial building of the Gemeentemuseum was his crowning achievement. It includes many innovative features on the use of light, dimensions, construction, colour, climate control, and visitor facilities. Visitors enter between 2 pylons and approach the building via a covered walkway flanked by 2 ponds. The transition enables them to leave the city and the cares of everyday life literally behind them. The design of the museum is based on a grid composed of squares and cubes with sides measuring 1.10 m. All the walls and columns are located on the system lines and intersections of this grid. The superstructure of the museum is built of concrete and iron. The concrete skeleton was then faced with striking ochre-coloured bricks. The brick walls are not load bearing. Nautical Centre Scheveningen Address Hellingweg / Landhoofd C Den Haag Netherlands http://www.nautischcentrum-scheveningen.nl/ . The harbour of Scheveningen is being transformed from a fishermen harbour to a ship (yacht) yard with international allure. The arrival of the Nautisch Centrum (Nautical Centre) plays a big part in this. The location of the centre has several aspects. It is situated on the abutment, with the small-scale harbour on one side, and the harbour port with a clear view onto sea on the other side. This situation asked for several scale elements. The harbour side has a vertical section in which balconies recede in the façade. As a result, this façade looks more closed. The varying use of colours on the façades creates a picture that refers to harbours that can be found in Southern European countries. The sea side has a leading horizontal advancement, with the balconies on the outside of the façade giving a view to the open sea. . Public access unknown! . . . . . . Housing Schilderswijk West Address Suze Robertsonstraat 10 2526 WS Den Haag Netherlands http://schilderswijk.net/ . Siza designed two housing blocks with 106 dwellings in the 'social housing' sector. The one building has 5 corners and the other 3. The houses in the 4-layer high building have a so called ‘portiekontsluiting’, which means, the entrance is facilitated with a stair, accessible from the street. The red bricks have a rhythmic pattern of large square windows. On the corners, several white smooth surfaces are made. In 1989-1993 a second phase was realized, with 238 houses on the Doedijnstraat and surroundings. photo: João Morgado . Project is not public! . Chapel St Mary of the Angels Address Nieuwe Crooswijkseweg 123 3034 PN Rotterdam Netherlands http://www.begraafplaatslaurentius.nl . Located in the St. Laurentius cemetery in Rotterdam, this chapel sits on top of a historic chapel from 1869 whose outline is still visible as ruins of the original wall. Inside, the atmosphere always feels intimate, regardless of the amount of people. The chapel consists of a column-free space wrapped by a continuous, undulating wall raised seventy centimetres off the floor, with a gently curved floating roof above. This allows daylight to stream inside through the strips of glass that run above and below the wall, creating an ethereal quality of light that heightens the spiritual experience of being between heaven and earth. Adorning the intense blue wall are texts from the Requiem in Paradisum in various languages, a reference to the surrounding multicultural neighbourhood. Torch-like lamps illuminate the gold-coloured ceiling from the inside out. A light beam falls into the chapel through an opening in the roof, accentuated by the rising smoke of burning incense. photo: Christian Richters . Project is public! . . . . . .
