For some students, their families work serving delicious food to the Irvine population. by Naomi Menezes and Kristyanne Crosby News and Opinion Editors Black Market Bakery Sage Klemek (senior) and Levi Klemek (sophomore) 17941 Sky Park Circle Irvine, Calif. Just remember to clear your plates when you’re done; they don’t clear tables like other places. Where to get your caffeine fix Skip Starbucks for a day and try one of these classy coffee cafes. They may be somewhat pricier, but the caffeine comes with an extra kick of delicious. by Naomi Menezes News Editor Portola Coffee Lab The lab-themed environment of Portola Coffee Lab is indicative of the coffees shop’s unique brewing methods. The baristas prepare some of their signature coffees for hours; a notable item on the menu is the Kyoto Iced Coffee, which they brew overnight for 12 hours. Portola also expanded its selection to a new tea bar, Seventh Tea Bar, opening later this month, and a brew bar, Theorem, currently open in the same plaza. Portola Coffee Lab gets its pastries from Cake Monkey, located in Los Angeles. The shop also serves a full range of breakfast and lunch items. Cafecito Organico Nestled down the street from South Coast Plaza in The Lab, Cafecito Organico is a new coffee shop in Orange County with a focus on sustainability and high quality coffee. The shop has its roots in L.A., with its main shop in Silverlake. They have signature drinks like the Cafecito (whole milk infused with cane sugar and coffee) and the chilled version of the Cafecito, the Global Warming. The location at Costa Mesa offers monthly coffee brewing workshops for its customers to master the art of coffee making at home. The coffee shop also serves pastries from the Black Market Bakery. Kean Coffee Kean Coffee is a family owned coffee shop located in Tustin and Newport Beach. The shop offers a roomy, inviting location for customers to spend a morning with friends or doing some work. The shop also has regular events for its customers, such as Latte Art nights where baristas compete to see who can create the prettiest latte. Kean also offers fair trade coffee with selections from around the world. lackmarket Bakery is an Orange County favorite for sweet treats. The bakery’s headquarters is in Sky Park Circle next to John Wayne Airport, with a new location in The Camp in Costa Mesa opening in late December for the holidays. Senior Sage Klemek and sophomore Levi Klemek’s parents founded the bakery nine years ago in Irvine. The bakery’s products are featured all across Orange County in coffee shops like Kean Coffee. Sage Klemek says her family’s bakery is defined as “Retroartisanal.” “My parents define it (that way),” she said. “Retro is different… and then artisanal because everything is real food handmade in small batches.” Sage Klemeck’s favorite treats from the bakery include the Classic Two Tone, a cookie with white and chocolate chunks in it, and the Yeti, a cookie with a white chocolate center and coconut on top. The bakery produces other sweet treats like tarts and scones. Nate’s Korner Angela Shounia (senior) 3960 S Main St. Irvine, Calif. N ate’s Korner is a homey family restaurant owned by the parents of senior Angela Shounia. The deli style restaurant serves a wide variety of sandwiches and burritos at reasonable prices. “My favorite thing is probably the grilled steak sandwich, or ‘Nate’s favorite’ is also really good,” Shounia said. They have a large menu and serve everything from chicken salad croissants to breakfast burritos. Nate’s Korner is a cute, family owned restaurant with fantastic service. Owning a restaurant has both advantages and disadvantages. “You can pretty much eat whatever you want and you can get anything you want and you can have a job at all times,” Shounia said. On the other hand, restaurants can be very stressful. “There’s always competition so it’s hard for them (her parents),” Shounia said. Yet the food has brought the family members even closer together. After the shop closes, the Shounia family hangs out inside the shop eating delicious food and the adults play poker. The shop is currently located at 3960 S Main St near South Coast Plaza and is now looking to expand to more locations in Orange County. Mick’s Karma Bar Noor Schepers (junior) 2010 Main St Irvine, Calif. H idden away in a business complex on Main Street in Irvine, Mick’s Karma Bar is a go to place for a good burger. Junior Noor Schepers, whose parents own Mick’s, suggests the Karma Burger for the new customers. “It’s a really good juicy burger,” she explained. “(It) has a secret sauce... I can’t really say what’s in it.” Scheper’s parents started the restaurant after seeing the need for a quick dining spot in the area. “(My dad) knew it was in an office area and didn’t want to dine in all the time.” In-Depth d bakeries: s of Warriors to quench your thirst?
