Santa Fe
New Mexico
Tangle U is on the move! This
year we go west to beautiful
Santa Fe, New Mexico. Our
venue is the historic Inn and
Spa at Loretto. Historic Santa
Fe is a CZT dream come true
with great museums, shopping
and galleries. Santa Fe is a
paradise for art lovers, history
buffs, cultural explorers and
outdoor enthusiasts.
Tangle U will kick off with a
cocktail hour on Thursday
evening in the beautiful Zuni
Ballroom overlooking the
sculpture garden. On Friday
we begin our three days of
CZT taught classes. This year
we will have multiple class
offerings and smaller class
sizes. We will have a
wonderful New Mexico theme
banquet on Saturday night.
And in 2015 you can
customize your Tangle U
experience with optional
classes, activities and
adventures available starting
on Thursday!
The Santa Fe Campus
Built at the end of the historic Old Santa Fe Trail high in the spectacular
Sangre de Cristo Mountains, the Inn and Spa at Loretto is an
architectural recreation of the Taos Pueblo, a national historic landmark.
The Inn is ideally located in the heart of Santa Fe, near the Palace of the
5Governors and just one block from historic Santa Fe Plaza.
The Inn and Spa at Loretto beautifully respects Santa Fe architecture,
character and spirit. Traditional beamed ceilings with vigas and latillas,
indigenous rugs, handwoven fabrics, and white-washed adobe walls
adorned with authentic regional artwork reflect Pueblo, Native American
and Spanish culture. Crackling kiva fireplaces, soft lighting and candles
provide welcoming warmth and comfort. Most rooms have outdoor
patios so that you can enjoy the view!

This year students at Tangle U will
be divided into two groups that will
rotate through the four core
classes. This allows us to have
smaller class sizes and more
individual attention. The core
classes provide a variety of
project based curriculum. In each
class you will learn new materials
methods, tangles and tangle
variations, and you will go home
with a lesson plan to work from!
On Saturday morning you get to
pick one of four elective classes.
This year there are even more
opportunities to customize your
Tangle U experience:
On Thursday we have a fabulous
ZIA class with Denise Rudd - in
this class you will make an
Ofrendo. You can also pick from
two excursions - one to Bandolier
Monument and the other for a
cooking class at the Santa Fe
Cooking school.
On Saturday afternoon the
ballroom will stay open for
shopping, make-in-takes with the
vendors, and gathering to tangle,
socialize and share with your
fellow students. Or you can grab a
couple of friends and explore
Santa Fe on-your-own! Optionally
you have two ZIA classes: One on
the on the Tangled Goddess,
taught by Patricia Carney and a
beautiful Book and Folded paper
tangle supply holder taught by
Maria Vennekens. In addition you
can take a walking tour of Santa
Fe - that includes the Georgia
O’Keeffe museum or go on a
guided excursion to Museum hill.
On Saturday we’ll all get together
again for cocktail hour and a New
Mexico theme banquet. And on
Sunday afternoon we will gather
together in the ballroom for a
special send off!

Visiting_Santa_Fe/Museums/
Its rich Native American
heritage, strong Spanish
influences and American
pioneering spirit combine to
make Santa Fe one of the
world's most culturally diverse
and interesting cities. Founded
by the Spanish in 1610, Santa
Fe is the oldest capitol city in the
United States and features the oldest home, the oldest church and the
oldest public building in the country.
This vibrant, memorable destination is a place of love, food, art, culture,
antiquity and people. It's a place of winding, narrow streets lined with
ancient red adobe buildings that blaze brilliantly against the turquoise-blue
sky. It's a place of energy, and also of healing and relaxation.
Santa Fe draws visitors from all over
the world to shop and visit art galleries
(Santa Fe has over 250 galleries!). The
beautiful Canyon Road is just a short
walk from our hotel.
Santa Fe is home to more than 200
restaurants that feature indigenous New
Mexican, creative Southwestern, Italian,
French, Asian, Cuban, continental, fine
dining and casual cuisine-just to name a
few.
Free history, art and culture: Santa Fe
has great museums. The state run New
Mexico History Museum and New Mexico
Museum of Art are free on Friday evenings from 5 to 8pm.

The Luminarie Restaurant has
fabulous food and serves
breakfast, lunch and dinner.
A really special place in the
Loretto is the Livingroom. This
space has a huge fireplace and
comfortable seating .It is open all
day for casual gathering. In the
afternoon the bar opens serving
small plates and signature drinks
like “The Smoking Nun” .
ART AND HISTORY AT THE INN
AND SPA AT LORETTO
The Inn and Spa at Loretto in
Santa Fe displays the work of
local artists in the public areas of
the hotel.
In addition to this art collection,
the Inn and Spa at Loretto hosts
an Artist in Residence Program
where artists illustrate their work
in the lobby. They do so while
communicating, describing, and
unfolding techniques, methods,
and stories with guests. This is a
chance to see art in action, to
witness something new, and to
feel the Art and Soul of Santa Fe.
Directly adjacent to the Inn and
Spa at Loretto stands the Loretto
Chapel. Inside is the staircase
referred to as a miraculous,
inexplicable, marvelous and is
sometimes called St. Joseph's
THE SPA AT LORETTO
The Loretto has an
award winning on-site
spa. The Spa at
Loretto takes a
respectfully holistic
approach to the art of
massage therapy and
well-being. Embracing
the healing traditions
of Native American
spiritual healers. The
spa has a full range of
spa treatments to
choose from. AND a
private elevator that
takes you from the hotel room floors directly into the spa! The
Spa has offered attendees of Tangle U a $25 per day credit!
To book a reservation at our Santa Fe spa, please contact us

Staircase. The stairway
confounds architects, engineers
and master craftsmen. It makes
over two complete 360-degree
turns, stands 20' tall and has no
center support. It rests solely on
its base and against the choir loft.
The risers of the 33 steps are all
of the same height. Made of an
apparently extinct wood species, it
was constructed with only square
wooden pegs without glue or
nails. http://www.innatloretto.com/

VISITING SANTA FE
Santa Fe is located in the high
desert at 7,000 feet. You will want to
spend some time acclimating to the
desert. Santa Fe is very dry, for a
few days before your trip you’ll want
to drink extra water and while in
Santa Fe continue to drink lots of
water. Ice water will be continuously
available during Tangle U. Bottled
water can be purchased for a
reasonable price in the lobby store.
While acclimating to the high desert
be aware that alcohol will affect you
faster. One drink in Santa Fe is the
equivalent of two at sea level.
Because Santa Fe is closer to the
sun you will burn faster. Be sure to
wear a hat and sunscreen when
outdoors. You may also want to bring
lip balm, eye moisture drops & saline
nose spray. In addition if you have
existing health issues consult your
doctor prior to the trip to make sure
you have everything you need with
you.
CORE CLASSES
Tangle Tales - Amy Broady
The deconstruction and naming of a pattern in order for it to be
identified as a tangle is a delightful challenge. Amy Broady finds
inspiration everywhere, and would like to share with you the
twenty or so tangles that she has deconstructed and named.
Step-outs are great (and will be provided), but hearing the
background story behind a tangle is what can really endear a
pattern and make it memorable. Build your tangle repertoire
while gaining insight through creation stories to recall when
you utilize or teach these tangles.
Cultivating Mindfulness through
Mandala/Zendala - Ann Grasso
Created just for Tangle U 2015, a new stencil offering four
unique options for making your own mandalas. You will learn
four new tangles developed during my travels in Spain. We
will use official Zentangle ® Zendalas in white, black &
Renaissance and also experiment with grey paper. While
techniques and tools are important, special emphasis will be
placed on mindfulness as the outcome of importance.
During the class we will use quadrant of each base paper
colors to describe a new tangle. The string will be created
using one quadrant of the stencil. Spinning the same
quadrant of the stencil on the paper provides a symmetrical
outcome. Because there are four different designs on the one
stencil, there are four strings available with the one stencil. I
will teach one new tangle per quadrant base paper color and
students can fill in the rest with their favorite tangles.
CORE CLASSES
Bedazzled Tangles & Botanicals - Bring on the
Enhancers for Bling, Drama & Style - Sharla Hicks
•Many CZTs wonder how they can bring more to students than
what is found in books, how can we develop a class series, how
do we guide students so that they become confident and develop
their own style? In this class Sharla will teach us how to
bedazzle tangles with enhancers. These methods are easy to
teach. Sharla has developed a vocabulary for enhancers that
expands upon the Zenthology of rounding, auras, and shading.
Sharla will also share how she developed her eight part series
and share more dieas for additional classes. She will share how
to offer more than the books and encourage repeat students!
Sharla will teach you how to become a facilitator that helps the
student soar into new heights and find their own Zentangle
style!
You will learn Learn: Mooka Blues, The Tan Shuffle, Black
Boogie, The Framers, The Wedgie, The Tango, The LineDance,
the Double Tickle, Dance of Shade and Shadows and much
more. Sharla will take your tangles & botanicals to new and
innovative places.
Tombow Technique Tags - Marie Browning
Participants will learn how to use and discover fun new
techniques with Tombow markers! Learn secrets, tips, tricks
and blending techniques with Dual Brush Markers. Learn the
trade secrets that will solve your sticky adhesive questions!
Learn new tangles with the stepouts also included. You will
make a folder full of tags for quick reference when creating
ZIA’s or to use as gift tags! At the completion of this
workshop all participants will be presented with a Tombow
Tangle Certificate.

variety of coloring techniques... and watercolor paints, I'll share which
coloring methods work best and how to accomplish washes, shading
and details.
Tangle Your Way to Business Success - Minette
Riordan

our beautiful surroundings. Kate will be teaching
her signature blending technique with Premier
Prisma Color Pencils as you get into the peaceful
process of adding color to your tangled art.
ELECTIVES, CONTINUED
Teaching the Challenging Class by Brenda Shaver
Brenda believes that as a successful teacher, part of our job is to determine, with insightfulness,
how to teach “what speaks to us” or “our passion”. For the first part of the class, Brenda will
show how to incorporate our personal story into our teaching and how to prepare our attitude to
convey what each student or group needs to hear and will understand including challenging
students.
She feels it is essential to achieve the right mind set and knowledge base to be successful in our
teaching; to give students the permission to succeed and
set them up for success by planning for their abilities.
Thinking about how to communicate on whatever level
they are at and by turning every expression into a
positive one. How to be the kind of teacher that will help
a student feel better about themselves when they are
with you; how to identify and affirm their gifts and
strengths and how to encourage them. Brenda will share
her personal experiences including several projects and
lesson plans. During the second part of the class we will
each tangle an 8”x 10” ZIA project drawing from our
unique personal experiences in order to help us develop
the thinking process needed to choose the criteria for the
style of classes suitable for challenging students..

combined with Zentangle, can be a ceremonial,

tangle. We’ll create two projects that you’ll be able to use a
separate lessons as a CZT. We’ll discuss how the different
