SEW-CIETY NEWS Central Illinois/Peoria Chapter American Sewing Guild Fall (September, October, November) 2016, Volume 34, No. 3—Peoria, Illinois Sue Melton Barnabee, Editor Advancing sewing as an art and life skill www.peoriaasg.org www.asg.org SEW SPECIAL ’16 SATURDAY, OCTOBER 1, 2016 UNITED PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH, PEORIA IL The featured speaker for Sew Special ’16 is Rhonda Buss of Chicago. Rhonda is president of the Haute Couture Club of Chicago. The event will feature a hands-on handbag workshop for 12 participants on Friday. Rhonda will be designing this project that will teach participants about zipper application, pockets, hardware and other handbag construction techniques. We will end up with a finished bag created just for us. The size is appropriate for a weekend trip or a sewing bag. The cool feature is a separate zippered compartment at the bag bottom to separate contents, like shoes from clothes, or fabric from sewing supplies. Saturday will feature all things sleeves including how to change garments by restyling the sleeves. Samples will be available for different sleeve variations. Rhonda will demonstrate how to draft, cut, slash and construct each sleeve variation. You don't have to be an expert because these techniques can apply to even a simple t-shirt style garment. There will be a trunk show of some of Rhonda's fashions. The afternoon will conclude with two make-it take-it wool flowers suitable for a lapel, hat, bag or wherever. The kit fee for the fabric flower will be $10. All materials and supplies are supplied. However, attendees should bring scissors to cut out the paper pattern and the felted wool for the flowers. In addition, the Saturday Sew Special ’16 will feature a noon style show by the state Make It With Wool contestants. A littleabout Rhonda. Some would say that Rhonda was born with a needle in her hand. Her first project was an embroidered handkerchief that she made with the help of her grandmother at the age of five. Once in high school, she took every sewing and design class that her school offered. With nothing more to offer, she attended the local community college where she had the opportunity to study fashion illustration and costume design. While in college, she took the limited fashion design classes that were offered. She had the opportunity to truly hone her skills at Ray College of Design in Chicago where she graduated with a degree in Fashion Design. In her final year, Rhonda won numerous awards for her designs, including fur and millinery awards. After graduating, Rhonda worked as a designer for a dress manufacturer. From there she did costume design and returned to teach tailoring and design at Ray College. In recent years, Rhonda began writing for Sew News magazine. She has also been featured in Threads magazine, Sew It All, and Sew Stylish. Her design was on the Spring 2014 cover for Sew Stylish magazine. In 2012, Rhonda won The People’s Choice Award in the Passion For Fashion competition at the American Sewing Expo. In 2013, her design won third place. In her popular blog, Rhonda’s Creative Life, Rhonda features easy to make designs made from simple shapes. She has a passion for sharing her knowledge and believes that everyone can sew and create. They just need the basic knowledge. You can find and follow her blog at www.sewbussted.com. CENTRAL IL/PEORIA AREA DATES TO REMEMBER September 9, 2016—Charity Sewing Day. Maybe you had a mentor, relative or neighbor, who solved a sewing conundrum, consoled you about a sewing disaster or celebrated your sewing successes. My grandmother was one of the most influential sewing artists in my life. She knew how to do everything. She was way ahead of her time, especially when it came to fabric painting and wearable art. She taught me everything from pressing to crochet. My grandmother's fabric stencils from the 1960's are in my collection now. Can you believe she belonged to a stencil club founded by a woman from a very small town in central Kansas? This club sent mail orders all across the country, including Hawaii. (Imagine all this happened without the internet. Absolutely primitive). I absolutely loved the projects made using these stencils, and now I use these stencils with my own little granddaughters. My teenage sewing years were also blessed by a gem of a neighbor, Opal Smith. Opal was there to save me from a near fatal clipping accident. I was constructing my first jacket as a gift for my mom. Progress was smooth until the notched collar/lapel area. Something was dreadfully wrong after I clipped and snipped. Opal eased the flow of tears by assuring me that we could fix it. Several hours later, I retuned home with a beautifully turned out collar/lapel on my jacket. Years later, Opal confessed that she thought the jacket was ruined but she just didn't have the heart to tell me so. We shared a good laugh. The point I want you to glean from my personal sewing accounts is that you never know what impact you might have if you share and teach your sewing skills. When a child or teen in your life asks to sew, or stitch, or bead or embroider, take time and make it happen. Find a 4-H Club or Girl Scout troop and discover how you can volunteer to teach sewing skills. Next time a non sewing friend compliments the garment or handbag you created, offer to teach your friend how to sew. Volunteer to teach a technique to your neighborhood group or consider creating a sewing tutorial for the chapter website. Be creative and keep your eyes open for ways to share your sewing passion. This summer I volunteered to help an energetic young woman teach beginning sewing classes on Thursday evenings. The experience has been a blast. I encourage all of you to get out there and share your skills, teach someone to sew, and make a lasting impression! In June, the Peoria Park District hosted a bus trip to Vogue Fabrics in Chicago. Gathering sewers of all kinds on a bus was just wonderful! There was delightful conversation among the attendees. It was amazing to discover how various sewing skills touch the community. There were quilters who make blankets for nursing homes. There were several groups who costume for the casts of local community theatres. There were sewing guild folks who make anti-ouch pouches. Sewing skills provide satisfaction and an income for so many: fiber artists, cosplay participants, members of the local Society for Creative Anachronism, and many others who do alterations or tailoring. Sewing skills are a part of life’s most powerful moments: the joy of a bride in her wedding gown or the sorrow of a mom seeing her child in an angel gown. The day reinforced to me that those of us developing our sewing skills are also strengthening the fabric of our communities in so many ways. Keep up the fantastic work! Martha Gamble submits the semi-annual report of charitable sewing that guild members have completed to the national organization. Please continue to keep close track of the time you have shared your sewing skills. Report those projects and the hours you have given to working on them to your local neighborhood group leader. She will forward that information on to Martha to include your contributions in our next report to the ASG headquarters. Martha Gamble, Neighborhood Group Coordinator SEWING TIPS FROM SUE Deon Maas is a member of the Fulton County NG. She has started a blog. Fall 2016 Sew-Ciety News, Page 11 COMMUNITY SERVICE PROJECTS ANTI-OUCH POUCH Anti-Ouch Pouches (AOPs) were designed by our chapter member Deon Maas. This underarm hanging pillow is intended to add a little comfort to people’s lives during a stressful, painful time. The pillow hangs from the shoulder, fitting snugly under the arm to cushion and ease the pressure of the underarm and breast area after breast surgery, upper body surgeries or during radiation treatment. Tens of thousands of anti-ouch pouches have been lovingly sewn and donated to breast centers across the United States. The American Sewing Guild featured the Anti-Ouch Pouch as the 2008 National Community Service Project. This will continue to be an ongoing project for our chapter. We take them to the OSF Susan G Komen Center, Methodist Diagnostic Center in Peoria and OSF in Galesburg. The digital mammography is catching so many more cases so that our need has increased. We would appreciate help making AOPs. If you have questions, contact Deon Maas at [email protected] or Sue Barnabee, [email protected]. Please consider donating soft fabric, stuffing, or completed AOPs. We donate hundreds every few months in our area at OSF Komen Center and Methodist Diagnostic Center. Deon Maas and Sue Barnabee organized a booth at the ASG convention this summer in Indianapolis to make Anti-Ouch Pouches. The Central IL/Peoria Chapter assisted in booth preparations. On April 29, 2016, at the North Branch of the Peoria Library we made 922 kits to take for the booth so attendees at the convention could make an Anti-Ouch Pouch to take home. In July, Deon Maas and Sue Barnabee traveled to the ASG national conference where Sue & Deon set up a make-it-take–it booth (shown on the left) for ASG members to construct or take 400 Anti-Ouch Pouch kits that were made and donated by the Central Il/Peoria chapter. On the right, Deon is shown modeling a garment she made and an anti-ouch pouch. ANGEL GOWNS OF CENTRAL ILLINOIS Loss of an infant leaves a sorrowful emptiness in the arms and hearts of their families who never were able to bring the child home from the hospital. It can be an isolating time, especially as parents try to find clothing to bury their tiny babies in. The Chillicothe Christian Church is coordinating the project to make Angel Dresses from wedding and formal gowns. The Angel Dresses are for babies who never recover in the neonatal intensive care unit at Children’s Hospital of Illinois at OSF St. Francis Medical Center in Peoria. The gowns are made for baby boys and girls to serve as baptismal/end of life gowns. Navy, gray and black are used for pant sets for the boys. The gowns are made to fit the small premature babies. One wedding dress can make up to 10-12 Angel Gowns. Each little outfit comes packed in a special pretty keepsake box. In the box, along with the gown, is a handmade blanket and hat and booties. Over 100 wedding dresses have been donated since the project began. Right now the group needs to use the previously donated wedding dresses so wedding dresses are not currently being accepted. However, there is a need for pink, blue or black gowns as well as ribbons, lace, buttons, thread and other notions, cash donations or JoAnn Fabric gift cards to purchase sewing supplies will be accepted. Dresses do not need to be cleaned before you send them. Unless your gown has been trashed, sewers have had lots of luck spot cleaning and working around damage. The next Angel Gown Day will be October 11-12 from 9-2 in Chillicothe at the Chillicothe Christian Church. For lunch reservations call Kim Aldag at (309) 698-2026. You can contact Dorothy Burnett at (309) 647-1956 or Sue Barnabee, [email protected] (309) 647-0111 to make donations. Fall 2016 Sew-Ciety News, Page 12 CRITTENTON CHILD DEVELOPMENT CENTER Crittenton Development Center serves Central Illinois children and families by providing loving child care as well as a 24hour staffed crisis nursery. The center is in need of crib sheets. The pattern is on the web site www.peoriaasg.org. You can donate them directly, contact a CAB member for pick up or bring them to a chapter/neighborhood meeting. Our chapter donates custom-made bibs, crib and cot sheets, burp pads and wash cloths to help defray the costs of purchasing these items. Crittenton staff members have said the items our chapter provides are "much higher quality" than those they can purchase. They are in constant need of sheets. Please consider helping. Supplies to make the items will be provided to you. This year we will help support Crittenton Development Center by collecting coupons for baby items. Since these are time limited, gather your coupons periodically and mail them to Crittenton Development Center, 442 W John H Gwynn Jr Ave, Peoria, IL 61605. Our support at Crittenton Child Development Center is done by donating items that they need. This is a project we will be continuing. Contact Pat West for information at [email protected]. NEWS FROM YOUR COMMUNITY LIAISON Dear Peoria/Central Illinois Members Summer is flying by and to ring in the fall we have another community sewing day planned for Friday, September 9th from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Same location: North Allen Road Peoria Public Library. We should be in the front room but if we are not there, look in the room in the back past the computers. Most likely, the sewing will be cot sheets and bibs for Crittendon Center with anti-ouch pouches if there is time. We are always in need of fabric for the cot sheets and bibs and would appreciate any donations. We had a great showing last April and lots of fun. We assembled over 900 anti ouch pouch kits for the national conference in Indianapolis. This community service work is part of being a member of ASG and you are so appreciated by the people we serve. See you there and enjoy the last days of summer. Lynne LaHood Community Liaison STATE AND NATIONAL DATES TO REMEMBER September 8, 9 & 10, 2016—Quilt Expo. I was so fascinated that I nagged my mother until she taught me how to run it. I spent many hours practicing on lined paper with a threadless needle. Mother became a 4-H leader when my older sister was old enough to join 4-H. I went to all the meetings. I wanted to do all the projects the older girls did. I made my first school dress when I was nine. In eighth grade sewing class, I made a two-piece wool dress while the rest of the class learned to make gathered skirts. After I was married, I made all of my maternity clothes and the baby layettes. Besides clothing, I made drapes, slipcovers, pillows, tablecloths, bedspreads and Halloween costumes. In 1952, I saw an ad for a correspondence course in Dress Design. It was one of the best projects I ever invested time or money in. I taught sewing for the Singer Sewing Machine Company for a year. While I was working there I made all the store samples. I was also responsible for all the window displays. Much of my wardrobe at that time appeared there. Also shown were my daughter’s dresses. In 1960, I started a dressmaking and design business. Back then, there were a lot of formal dances. Saturday night at the country club was semi-formal. I dressed the U of I Cheerleaders for their first TV appearance (before spandex). I made the stage costumes for the U of I Dance program for five years before Krannert started their costume department. In 1990, I joined ASG when they first started a NG in the Champaign-Urbana area. Jean Montgomery and I were co-leaders for several years. Through the years the local group made angel gowns, pajamas for Crisis Nursery, bibs for children and adults, cancer turbans, Christmas boots and anti-ouch pouches.
