Dear Librarian
A New Year brings with it a brand new selection of 36 outstanding Oakhill
unabridged Audio Books to suit every taste.
a woman has to face up to her secrets, and other people’s deadly ones in The
Turning Tide by Brooke Magnanti.
Much has been written in recent years about the secret work done at Bletchley
Park, but in The Bletchley Girls Tessa Dunlop focusses for the first time on
the women who worked there, drawing on her interviews with 15 surviving
‘secret keepers’.
People grow to love their houses; one such home is put in danger by the
profligate behaviour of its owner in Veronica Henry’s Honeycote. The family
in Fanny Blake’s House of Dreams have reservations about revisiting the
house in southern Spain where they grew up, while in Larkswood by Valerie
Mendes a golden Victorian childhood is shattered by disaster. Natalie
Livingstone tells the story of a real-life house and the women responsible
for its scandalous reputation in The Mistresses of Cliveden:Three Centuries of
Scandal, Power and Intrigue in an English Stately Home.
Anyone looking for cracking crime novel need look no further! Champion jockey
A. P. McCoy puts his inside knowledge to good use in his latest thriller set in
the world of racing, Narrowing the Field. DI Jackman faces a race against time
following the abduction of a Chinese student after a row with her boyfriend
in Before It’s Too Late by Jane Isaac. A picnic in Finsbury Park leads to death in
another investigation for reporter Rex Tracey in M. H. Baylis’s The Tottenham
Outrage. A young police officer finds himself investigating a murderer who kidnaps
couples, torturing them, but leaving only one to survive the night in Steve
Mosby’s The 50/50 Killer, while The Chasebridge Killer brings fear to the heart of
Doncaster in Bones in the Nest by Helen Cadbury. An unlikely pairing – a rich,
female DCI and a DS from the wrong side of town – find themselves working
together to find out who’s killing South London’s villains in Welcome to Meantime
by Murray Davies.
Obsession turns to tragedy in Fergus McNeill’s Cut Out; Ruth Dugdall poses
the question of what you do when a child who has murdered is released in
Humber Boy B; a killer who can’t recognise faces stalks the streets of Philadelphia
in Richard Montinari’s Shutter Man; and Barbara Nadel’s Turkish Inspector
Ikmen finds himself knee-deep in corruption when he heads for a policing
conference in Detroit in Dead of Night. In Amsterdam a Council employee
dealing with funerals for the unknown dead finds something worries him about
an ‘accidental’ drowning of a Moroccan in Britta Bolt’s Lonely Graves, while the
hijackers who have placed on bomb on board a flight bound for the US from
Stockholm are demanding that Sweden goes back on its decision to deport a
Moroccan in Kristina Ohlsson’s Hostage.
A toxicologist finds himself caught up in a night of killing and absinthe in
Jonathan Moore’s The Poison Artist; a self-destructive German photographer is
accused of murder in The Girl Who Wasn’t There by Ferdinand von Schirach.
When a German agent goes missing in 1941, MI6 and US Intelligence call on
the skills of Sergeant Troy of Scotland Yard in John Lawton’s Riptide. And in
Anne Perry’s Blood on the Water, set at a time when the Suez Canal is nearly
built, Commander William Monk of the River Police doubts that the Egyptian
convicted of causing an explosion on a Thames pleasure boat is actually guilty.
In Her by Harriet Lane two women from different worlds meet. One
thinks they’ve not met before – but the other knows differently with chilling
consequences. When a young boy goes missing the nation blames his mother,
but are they right to do so asks Gilly Macmillan in Burnt Paper Sky. One bad
decision destroys years of happiness in Mike Bullen’s Trust and in Bright Stars
by Sophie Duffy a man wonders if he’s ready to face a University reunion likely
to bring back memories of a tragic night years ago. After 20 years of happiness

Two women hope to relive the days of their youth by reviving a place they
stayed on the island of Paros in Vanessa Greene’s The Beachside Guest House
and conversely in Emma Hannigan’s The Heart of Winter a family home has
been transformed into a venue hosting weddings and the like. An Irish lodge is
full of memories for a young woman leaving behind the London smart set of
the ‘30s in Kate Beaufoy’s Another Heartbeat in the House. Sent to live in her
aunt’s boarding house, the heroine of The Orphan by Maggie Hope has to
decide whether to marry just to escape her unhappy surroundings.
Historical fiction is always a popular category and this quarter there’s plenty
for enthusiasts to enjoy. Simon Scarrow embarks on a new series of books
featuring two of history’s most prominent figures in Young Bloods:The Wellington
and Napoleon Quartet, Book 1: 1769-1795. Nick Brown continues his series
about the Roman Empire in The Imperial Banner: Agent of Rome 2. Fast forward
several hundred years and Stewart Binns The Shadow of War: 1914 is the first
book in a series entitled The Great War which follows the fate of five families
through the ensuing conflict.
The word ‘iconic’ is a much over-used term, but it is one that is justified in the
case of the aeroplane which captured the hearts of a nation. Jonathan Glancey
recounts its history in Concorde:The Rise and Fall of the Supersonic Airliner.
For those with a taste for the supernatural a group of commuters and tube
workers in the underground survive a fiery apocalypse and escape through a
door to another world in Simon Morden’s Down Station. Equally disturbing is
The Raven’s Head, a story of alchemy and human sacrifice by Karen Maitland.

found on board. Anonymous
hijackers demand that the
Swedish government revoke
its decision to deport a Moroccan man. If their
demands are not met, the plane will explode
if it attempts to land. The US and Swedish
governments must choose between negotiating
with terrorists or pursuing the deportation
of a possibly innocent man. Fredrika Bergman

Alex Recht and the abrasive Eden Lundell of the
Security Service’s counter-terrorism unit. They
soon realise that the plot behind the hijacking is
far more complex than anyone thought ...

When Rosa and Bee get together
in the run-up to Bee’s wedding,
they reminisce about the holiday
they took together as teenagers

of Paros. They remember the
sandy coves and the guest house in the converted

Iona. As memories of that holiday resurface, they
are forced to confront the turns their lives have
taken – and the guilt they feel about letting Iona
slip away from them. When they learn that the
windmill guest house is going bust they form a
plan: why not go back to the island and take it
over themselves? And so begins a life-changing
journey – because it turns out that reliving their
teenage dreams isn’t that easy ...

ANDY SEED
All Teachers Bright and Beautiful (NF)
Read by David Fleeshman
Poland suffered terribly under the Nazis. By the end of the war six million had been killed.
On 1 August 1944 Andrew Borowiec, a 15-year-old volunteer in the Resistance, lobbed a grenade
from a Warsaw apartment block onto some German soldiers below – he felt he had come of
age. Over that summer Andrew faced danger at every moment.Wounded the day after his 16th
birthday, he was captured as he lay in a makeshift cellar hospital. Here he learned a lesson: there
were decent Germans as well as bad. This is an extraordinary tale of survival and defiance.
Andy Seed is beginning his fifth year teaching at Cragthwaite Primary in the Yorkshire Dales,
and as always a new term is full of surprises. There’s a beautiful, but not terribly bright,
student on placement from the local teacher training college, and a particularly pushy
parent with a fine line in complaining. At home in Applesett, things aren’t all rosy either.
Barbara is forced to take a job to help pay the mortgage, which means finding someone to
look after Tom and Reuben. When two old friends move into the village it looks like the
problem has been solved, but it soon transpires that rural life is not for everyone.

diary. She would go on to witness and record some of the worst tragedy of the First World
War, though somehow always maintaining her optimism, curiosity and high spirits throughout.
Nearly a 100 years on, what shines out from these extraordinarily evocative diaries is a
courageous, spirited, compassionate young woman.
A Different Class of Murder (NF)
Read by Anna Bentinck
On 7 November 1974, a nanny named Sandra Rivett was bludgeoned to death in a
Belgravia basement. A second woman,Veronica, Countess of Lucan, was also attacked.
The man named in court as perpetrator of these crimes, Richard John Bingham, 7th Earl
of Lucan, disappeared in the early hours of the following morning. The case, solved in the
eyes of the law, has retained its fascination ever since. Laura Thompson narrates the story
that led up to that cataclysmic event, and draws on her considerable forensic skills to reexamine the possible truths behind one of postwar Britain’s most notorious murders.

A. N. WILSON
The Book of the People: How to Read the Bible (NF)
Read by Gareth Armstrong
A. N. Wilson has been thinking about the Bible, and reading it, since he read theology for
a year at university. Martin Luther King was ‘reading the Bible’ when he started the Civil
Rights movement. When Michelangelo painted the fresco cycles in the Sistine Chapel,
he was ‘reading the Bible’. In The Book of the People A. N. Wilson explores how readers
and thinkers have approached the Bible, and how it might be read today. Charting his
own relationship with the Bible over a lifetime of writing, Wilson argues that it remains
relevant even in a largely secular society, as a philosophical work, a work of literature and
a cultural touchstone.

The Special Dead
A is for Angelica
Mark Howitt expects a fun, no-strings night of passion with Leila. But when he wakes up
in the early hours of the morning, he is horrified to stumble upon his former bed partner
dead and suspended from the ceiling, alongside 27 Barbie dolls. Rhona Macleod’s forensic
investigation of the scene reveals the cord used to hang Leila to be a cingulum, an artefact
used in the practise of Wicca, and sketches hidden in nine of the dolls suggest the dolls are
linked with nine men. As the investigation continues, it looks increasingly likely that other
wiccan witches will be targeted too ...

one evening to find a distraught Hollywood starlet standing before him. But although
feigning an American accent, this woman is not all that she seems. For her name is actually

imagine, he has learnt to see beauty in the mundane.

the Villa Romanelli he enrols on a natural remedies course conducted by a young woman

crumbling villa and its once-magnificent gardens draws him in. And when a Romanian girl
who works for Silvana’s fiancé Niki asks for his help, Blume is dragged into the shadowy
case of a missing girl, and the horrors of the garden’s malign beauty.

nice quiet work as a private investigator. But then her sister-in-law dies and Brigid takes
in her 17-year-old niece, Gemma Kate. There has always been something unsettling about
Gemma-Kate, but then she starts taking an unhealthy interest in dissecting the local

Murder at the Miramar
On a beautiful Saturday in downtown Saint Paul, Minnesota, state investigator Kirk Stevens
and FBI special agent Carla Windermere, witness the assassination of one of the state’s
wealthiest men. The shooter is a young man, utterly unremarkable … except for the dead
look in his eyes. The events of that sunny springtime day will lead Stevens and Windermere
to a flourishing 21st century enterprise: a high-tech murder-for-hire social media website.
But just who has the dead-eyed shooter targeted next … and who’s choosing his victims?
With the dreaded Family Reunion looming over her head – and a broken heart to boot –
Augusta Josephine Burnette takes matters in hand and leaves her hometown for a job in a
seaside resort. The setting is elegance incarnate, but the atmosphere says something else
entirely. With her innate sense of adventure (and just plain nosiness), AJ sets out to unravel
exactly what – and who – the Miramar Resort is hiding. AJ begins to think that time spent
with her crazy family might not be as lethal as the time spent at the Miramar ...

they die. When his oldest friend Mel Kissing dies with an ice pick through his skull, Raines

one death is just a drop in the ocean. The Vietnam War is ripping the country to pieces, the
Woodstock Festival is in full swing and Norman Mailer is standing as candidate for Mayor

he left in Texas, back to the battered remains of his youth, and as his memory unravels,

The Letters of Ivor Punch
After I Left You
Imagine an island, a place separated from the mainland by choppy seas. A place of myths
and faith, where a Headless Horseman is said to stalk the woods but where the kirk is
always full. Imagine a community which held its own against Darwin but which can’t hold
on to its own. Prepare to meet a pioneering female travel writer, two fatherless boys, and a
man who, quite simply, fell from the sky. And, at the centre of it all, the figure who links the
past to the present – the irrepressible, unforgettable former Sergeant Punch. Ivor Punch

Lois and Carly-May are just 12 years old when they’re abducted and imprisoned for two
months. That summer they form a bond which will never be broken ... Decades later,
they have built new lives for themselves. Lois, a professor of literature, is shaken when

remnants of her career as an actress. When she reads a shockingly-familiar screenplay, she

Dark Room
Read by Caroline Lennon
Read by David Thorpe
For DI Andrew Hicks, solving a murder is logical: your first suspicions are usually right. So
when the brutally beaten body of a young woman is found, his attention focuses closely on
the ex-boyfriend. But then more bodies start appearing, all beaten beyond recognition, and
there is no connection between any of the victims. Because this is a new type of killer, one
who revels in chaos. To survive, Hicks must face not only a serial killer with no discernible
motive, but the hidden darkness of his own past.
Abbey Andersen’s life in San Francisco is in serious danger of hitting a rut. She’s pretty
sure it doesn’t get worse than being dumped by post-it note, and her current job is
hardly the best outlet for her creative talents. Meanwhile in Ireland Fred Fitzpatrick is
finding it impossible to keep his grown-up children and their families on side, and they’re a
demanding lot at the best of times. But when Fred asks solicitor Ryan Gilligan to contact
Abbey about a long-buried family secret, things start to change dramatically. And not
everyone affected is happy about it ...

food … But life is rarely straightforward. Alice wants to make the most of life – after all,

1792. It’s winter in Berkeley Square and the night-watchman comes across the body of
silversmith Pierre Renard, his throat cut and his valuables missing. It could be common
theft, but as news of the murder spreads, it soon becomes clear that Renard had more
than a few enemies. At the centre of this web is Mary, the silversmith’s wife. Ostensibly
theirs was an excellent pairing, but behind closed doors their relationship was a dark and
at times sadistic one. Mary is haunted by her past and near-mad with guilt. Will she attain
the redemption she seeks and what does she need redemption for?
